71 – 75 : Read the following paragraph and
answer the five questions that follow :
Michael Titze, a German psychotherapist
coined the term gelotophobia (gelos is Greek
for ‘laughter’) for describing a condition of
pathological fear of being laughed at that he
observed in private practice among some of
his clients. Gelotophobes fear exposing
themselves to others as they fear that these
individuals screen them for evidence of
ridiculousness. Gelotophobes are also
convinced that such evidence exists as they
experience themselves as being ridiculous
and involuntarily funny. They react
hypersensitively towards the laughter of others
– even if there is no evidence that this laughter
is actually directed at them. Studies support
that gelotophobes could be separated from the
different groups of patients and normal persons
through a list of items that represented
gelotophobic symptoms.
Thus people are assumed to vary between
absolutely no fear of being laughed at, through
a borderline area, to slight, marked or
pronounced and extreme fear. Studies report
that the incidence of gelotophobes varies
across nations; e.g., there are about 1.62%
gelotophobes (slight : 1.21%, marked : 0.40%,
extremes : 0.01%; Führ et al. 2010) in Denmark,
but 13% gelotophobes in England (10%, 2%
and 1%; Platt et al. 2009). Across all nations
samples tested so far there are about 9.9%
with slight, 2.9% with pronounced, but only
0.5% with extreme fear of being laughed at.
Proyer et al. (2009) examined responses of
93 samples from 73 countries (comprising a
total of 22,610 participants) using principal
component analysis and found that for the total
sample, a one-dimensional solution explained
the data best. Furthermore, separate analyses
were carried out for each sample and the
median of the eigenvalues of the first factor was
5.27 accounting for about 35% of the variance.
The median of the loadings on the first
dimension ranged from 0.43 to 0.67 across all
samples suggesting that gelotophobia is
unidimensional.
71. Gelotophobia at its extreme may involve
the following features
i. More or less pronounced paranoid
tendency
ii. Marked sensitivity to offence
iii. Aggression
iv. Social withdrawal
(A) i, ii and iii
(B) ii, iii and iv
