A. Underground Layers
1. Water comes from precipitation2. Water underground trickles down
between particles of soil and through cracks and spaces in layers of rocks
3. Pores- size of space between particles of soil
4. Permeable- materials that allow water to move easily (sand, gravel)
5. Impermeable- materials water cannot pass through

A. Underground Layers
6. Saturated zone- the area of totally filled with water
7. Water table- top of saturated zone
8. Unsaturated zone- layer of rocks that is above water table

B. Aquifers1.An under ground layer of
rock or sediment that holds water
2.Vary in size3.Water is in constant motion

C. Bringing Groundwater to the
Surface1. Springs- where the water table meets the the ground surface and flows out
2. Wells- can drill a well below the water table
3. Today pumps bring water to the surface- not buckets
4. Recharge- new water the enters the aquifer from the surface- this happens if well is drained
5. Artesian Well- a well in which water rises because of pressure within aquifer
