During the quarter, IIE had the privilege of hearing from one of our favorite alumni and past president of OSU’s IIE Student Chapter, Mr. David Rossi from Unilever. As a campus re-cruiter for Unilever and an alumnus of the ISE department, David was able to provide some incredibly valuable insight for landing a job. Hosted as a mostly informal session, David gave the group a breakdown of Unilever’s talent development program, some current projects of his, and some career fair week pointers to those who attended. One of the most im-portant things that David stressed during the info session was the importance of campus involvement and leadership on resumes: “The first thing I do when I look at a resume is jump straight to the leadership and or involvement section of a resume”. If it is not high-lighted on the resume, make it pop. If there is no leadership involvement, go find it! Overall, the info session was very informative and those in attendance would definitely agree the David’s wealth of knowledge and love of IIE made this a very enjoyable info session. —Andrew Wharton

The resume writing class, held by Bobby Smyth and Shannon Smith, provided at-tendees with valuable tips and strategies for building a professional resume. In addi-tion, many advantages of being in the ISE major and a member of IIE were highlighted. Bobby and Shannon suggested the students include the following information in their resumes: an objective, summary, the student’s education, project experience, tech-nical skills, and campus involvement. Proper formatting for submitting resumes online and ideas for how to make a resume stand out to employers were also covered. Several tips were given for how to prepare for a company information session and career fair. These included proper dress codes for men and women, preparing an “elevator speech”, mapping out company locations, and having researched questions for company representatives. To conclude the class, attending students expressing some concern for, not having enough major and field experience, or a high enough GPA to land a co-op or intern-ship. Bobby and Shannon shared methods of highlighting marketable qualities and other accomplishments to compensate for lack of professional experience. —Ben Freidenberg

Interested in working for Nestlé? To list some of Nestlé’s specialty brands, Nestlé encompasses Nestlé Waters, Nestlé Professional, Nestlé Purina, and Nestlé Nutrition. Nestlé is the leader above all its competitors in terms of profit with 99 billion in annual sales. Nestlé's motto is "Good Food, Good Life". Nestlé's openings for job opportunities were mainly in the operations management training program (OMT). Three rotations are involved for this program. The first rotation is 12 months, located in a factory where the trainee is exposed to robust projects and training and development courses. The second rotation is similar but is 18-24 months, relocated to a new Nestlé facility in the United States in a different division where the trainee obtains an actual position of Front Line Supervisor in Pro-duction, Maintenance, Quality, or Warehouse. It is in this rotation that the trainee learns to get work done through others. In the last rotation, which is 18-24 months, relocated to a corporate position in the United States, the trainee learns what corporate technical groups do in support of manufacturing. The trainee again takes training and development courses and formally graduates from the program at the end of this rotation. Throughout all the rotations, the trainee is provided a mentor and coach and there are assessments for the OMT Program continuation. Nestlé invests in their interns and new hires and presents them with a fast paced atmosphere and challenging work. Nestlé is a "flat organization", where there are not many levels towards upper management, which makes the intern's/new hire's work even more critical to Nestlé. OMT provides real world experience and understanding of the role of Operations at the world's largest food and beverage company. This program is supported by the Senior Operations Manage-ment Team with the goal of developing high-caliber candidates in supporting their development on the fast track to management and a successful career with Nestlé USA. Sound like something you want? Apply and network with Nestlé today at http://careersbrochure.Nestléusa.com/ — Christina Lee

Early in the quarter, IIE had the privilege of co-hosting a Procter and Gamble info session on campus in conjunction with Engineering Career Services. Proctor and Gamble is a consumer goods company headquartered right here in Cincinnati, Ohio and is widely regarded as one of the best companies to work for in the Fortune 500. While P&G makes everything from Gillette Razors to Pampers Dia-pers, they ultimately strive to make life easier for the estimated 4.4 billion people that use their products around the globe. As a company, they offer full time and internship positions in both Manu-facturing, Supply Chain, and R&D related fields. Internships are typically in the summer and are highly competitive due to P&G’s search for leaders. As a company, P&G’s promoting from within philoso-phy is a large part of their success and also their philanthropic efforts around the world. As a com-pany, P&G donates large amounts of product, money, and effort serving causes such as clean drink-ing water for third world nations. They have even launched a student group here at OSU with this vision in mind. If you are looking for an exciting experience and a great company, look no further than P&G. —Andrew Wharton

Every year IIE has a "Schmooze" event where students can receive mem-bership for half price. The Columbus senior chapter joins us every year at the Schmooze to help welcome new IIE members. This year we are proud to say that we had 52 members sign up!

We are excited to see so many young members eager to get involved. The growing number shows how our department is growing overall. This com-ing year IIE will be the largest it has ever been at OSU and we have the opportunity to do great things. Big thank you to current members helping out with all the recruiting events! And welcome all new members of IIE !!!

—Andrea Allison

Along with PB&J Humor Showcase and Pizza Rustica, the Institute of Industrial Engineers hosted Comedy Night this October. Three comedians performed stand-up for us over the course of the evening. We were the butt of jokes about the ambiguity of Systems Engineering and the innate nerdiness that ac-companies a roomful of engineers. Pizza was eaten, laughs were had, and con-versation was made. Be sure to join us for future fundraisers at various eater-ies around campus!

Members of IIE have been busy volunteering for numerous events on and off campus this quarter. The big volunteering event this quarter was the Engineering Expo, which is the career fair hosted by Engi-neer's Council. Two of IIE's officers served as coordinators for setting up and tearing down the career fair. Also, ten IIE members volunteered for two hours during the event, escorting company represent-atives to their tables at the Expo. This was a great opportunity for volunteers to talk with company representatives about Ohio State and ISE.. Also, throughout the quarter, Andrea Allison, VP of Membership, and IIE members have been working closely with our ISE advisor, Kristen Johnson to help recruit for IIE and the ISE major. Whether it was attending Kristen’s seminar classes, talking to engineering undecided majors, or manning a booth at the Engineering Activities and High School Engineering Fairs, IIE members have been helping to spread the word through the power of personal testimony to the younger demographics of both OSU and high school age students. Many faculty and alumni have also participated in these discussions. Dr. Irani lead breakout sessions where students had to find the cheapest way to send a 'rocket' into space, utilizing ISE principles during their construction, and alum David Rossi came in and shared his experi-ences from Unilever. Female IIE members also teamed up with a Women in Engineering (WiE) event where high school seniors would 'speed date' potential engineering majors. Female students from the department along with, Kristen Johnson and Dr. Sommerich talked with these high school girls and their parents about why they should choose ISE as their major. After they sampled all the majors, they could pick which major’s table they would like to sit at for dinner, at which ISE has a strong showing.

Keep an eye out for opportunities this next quarter to lend a hand!
