It’s that time of year when we give thanks for what we’ve received, reflect upon our successes, and anticipate positive changes in the coming year. As I look back at 2011 for the Texas Oklahoma Chapter, I’m reminded of how fortunate it is to be part of the Association and to collaborate with other members that share the same passion for the profession and community as I do.

That passion is evident in the more than 150 volunteers that dedicate countless hours, energy and resources to the Chapter, City Centers and Campus Centers in Texas and Oklahoma. Their dedication to the profession helped bring over 50 continuing education opportunities to our 1300 members and helped support at least 10 local charitable organizations. It is amazing what can be accomplished by so many! These members developed creative programs and events that encouraged unity among designers, social awareness and public involvement. I am so grateful to all of the volunteers for being a positive influence in their design community and the Association!

Without the support of our volunteers, Chapter Sponsors and Underwriters, the numerous successes in 2011 would not have been possible. Last year, the Chapter was able to grow its Education Fund, which provides four scholarships annually to Juniors, Seniors and Graduate Interior Design students throughout our region. We were able to support the efforts of TAID, the Texas Association for Interior Designers, when House and Senate bills were introduced to the State Legislature that threatened our industry and fellow IIDA members. The Chapter Board finalized new Chapter branding and marketing materials, complete with Chapter and City Center logos, newsletters, unified eblasts and the launch of our new website in October. Check out the article in this newsletter by Keesha Erdmann, VP of Communications, which details the process and what was created. I hope you visit the site and continue to use it as a resource for event information, membership statistics, and Chapter Partner contacts.

As I look forward in anticipation of 2012, I am excited about the development of initiatives set by the Chapter Board. One of these initiatives is to further advance our website and provide online event payment for our members. With the improvement, we will be able to serve our members and supporters more efficiently by reducing the paperwork our current system entails. Additionally, the Chapter Board is focusing on member professional development with a number of goals. The Reimbursement Award Program will be expanding to include more credentialing exams to keep up with the certifications available to our practitioners, and a task force of Board Members and City Center Professional Development Chairs is working on a NCIDQ study course and guide for our Associate membership. We will continue to support our Student Members by hosting the annual IIDA Student Conference and hope to engage more Chapter-wide support and participation in the student experience.

So, if you’re thinking “Wow, that’s a lot to accomplish!”, I’d have to agree with you! Luckily, the Texas Oklahoma Chapter has a dedicated volunteer base of Designers and Industry Partners that support the advancement of our profession. Thank you for a wonderful 2011, and I know together we can accomplish great things in 2012!

IIDA AND TBAE CEU Compliance:

IIDA COMPLIANCE:Are you a professional or associate member of IIDA? Did you know that the compliance period is ending December 31, 2011? Even if you are a RID and a member of TBAE and if you are a professional or associate member of IIDA, you will need to meet the IIDA Compliance requirements.

Does the Current Period Apply to Me?The current compliance period applies if you became either a *Professional or *Associate Member prior to January 1, 2010. This allows you a full two years to complete the 1.0 CEU (10 hours) requirement. If you became a Professional or Associate Member after January 1, 2010, your first compliance period will begin January 1, 2012. *All Professional and Associate Members (active and inactive) including Educators, IIDA Fellows and Chapter Officers, must adhere to IIDA compliance requirements. TBAE COMPLIANCE:Are you a registered interior designer in Texas? The compliance period for TBAE does not match the IIDA compliance period. The compliance period is based on your birth month and runs for 12 months. It does not coincide with the calendar year. All 8 CEPH must include the study and subjects related to the profession of Interior Design and be pertinent to the health, safety, and welfare of the public. Put Your Best Foot ForwardTexas Oklahoma Chapter Forum Tour 2011 - 2012

In October Allison Levy, Senior Director of Government and Regulatory Affairs for IIDA, joined the Texas Oklahoma Chapter for the Speaker forum tour through Oklahoma. We did a whirl wind tour with lunch in Tulsa where Scott Rice transformed their showroom into a cafe and Oklahoma City hosted us at Nonna’s in bricktown underwritten by Smith Lighting Sales, Inc, Spaces inc, Workplace Resource, and Design Resource. Here is what the City Centers had to say about the event:

“We have a duty to our profession to be vocal and responsive when it comes to educating the public about the value and abilities we have in the field of design. One of the many things I took away from Allison’s presentation was how we should break down the “public” in order to reach the proper target audience. As she mentioned, there will always be Bravo and HGTV, so perhaps rather than hoping to change the altered perceptions of general public, we start with those that we work with directly such as contractors, engineers, architects, and others that have a better understanding of the architectural world.”Shannon Mitchener, IIDA, LEED AP - Tulsa City Center Director

During the forum, Allison spoke about how Interior Designers can advocate for the profession in many different ways. Interior Designers need to understand the issues that affect them locally, regionally, and nationally. Allison gave examples of ways Interior Designers can get involved that don’t always include writing a check, going to capitol day, making phone calls. While all of that is important, so is getting involved in the community and educating “The Public”. She helps address who the public is, and it is not always who you think.

One of the greatest questions Allison asked was how do Interior Designers define Interior Design. Texas get ready to answer that question as Allison is coming to your City Center soon. The Forum tour is scheduled in Houston/Austin/San Antonio January 30 - 31 and Dallas/Fort Worth/West Texas March 20 - 21st. Hope to see you soon at the forum coming to your City Center!

As we all know, the lifeblood of any organization is its membership. TAID in Texas and OIDC in Oklahoma need your support. Once you’ve renewed your IIDA membership or joined as a new member, please join your state coalition. METROCON11 Expo & Conference, the annual regional two-day tradeshow focused on featuring the latest in products and innovative ideas to the Southwest region’s interior designers, architects, facility managers, interior design students, and other vital design industry members – experienced great success in 2011 despite the slowly recovering Architecture and Design industry.

The volunteer committee of organizers of METROCON11 Expo & Conference is pleased to announce that the event attracted 2,447 participants from 21 states, as well as from outside the USA. The budget-conscious show that is now enjoying its ninth year sold out all of its 37 sponsorships a month ahead of schedule and sold out all of its 369 booths nine days ahead of the official close of exhibitor sales.

Held at Dallas Market Hall [2200 Stemmons Fwy, Dallas, TX 75207] on August 11 & 12, 2011, METROCON11 offered attendees 242 diverse vendors, 51 interior design-related continuing education courses and a happy hour designed especially for networking.

The annual event is unique in that it is organized through landmark volunteer collaboration between

the Texas Oklahoma Chapter of IIDA and the Texas Chapter of ASID. In a determined effort to serve the corporate, healthcare, hospitality, institutional, multifamily, residential, and retail sectors, the two organizations join forces and pool resources to provide maximum benefit to their members and beyond. Income from the event goes back to the chapters to fund special educational and recognition programs, as well as scholarships and charities earmarked by the individual organizations.

Due to the dedication of the volunteer Committee, as well as the generosity of 37 show sponsors – including 2011 Title Sponsor, Business Interiors by Staples, and 2011 Media Sponsor, Design Guide – prices for both exhibitors and attendees are extremely low relative to similar events around the USA.

Pegasus AwardsEvery year METROCON Expo & Conference honors outstanding exhibitors / exhibits with its annual Pegasus Awards. Those exhibitors wishing to be considered in any category must download the entry form from the METROCON website, complete it and turn it in to the Information Desk by 10am on Thursday, the first day of the show.

Later that day the panel of judges, which is comprised of IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter and ASID Texas Chapter members, anonymously evaluate all of the entrants. On Friday morning, the second day of the show, the winners are announced.

Pegasus Award winners are recognized with on-site signage at the front entry point of Dallas Market Hall and are presented with framed awards at their respective booths for display during the conference. After the show, they are recognized on the Press page of www.metrocon.info, on the METROCON Facebook page, in a post-event national press release, and in the following year’s printed show Directory.

The IIDA Texas Oklahoma Chapter Annual Awards Gala

The Texas Oklahoma Chapter of the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) awarded their 2011 Design Excellence Awards on Friday, August 12, 2011 at the Annual Awards Gala held at the Westin, Galleria in Dallas, Texas. Awards were given in seven categories: Corporate, Healthcare, Hospitality, Institutional/Educational, Retail, Government and Sustainability. Also presented were the Chapter Volunteers of the Year, City Center Volunteers of the Year, City Center Underwriters of the Year, Chapter Sponsor of the Year Award and the highly coveted Pinnacle Award. The Pinnacle Award is the highest honor IIDA can bestow upon a design firm. The award is granted only to firms that have consistently contributed to the highest aspiration of the profession, community and the IIDA while remaining committed to enhancing the quality of life through excellence in Interior Design.

How does it work? As a community of practice, ZeroLandfill projects are at work in a number of cities all across the country this year. With the help of a team of volunteers, ZeroLandfill holds an annual or seasonal event over multiple weekends. The program consists of Pollination days and Harvest days. Pollination days include drop off sites for the industry to donate their expired or unwanted samples. On Harvest days, volunteers help sort, weigh, and organize material by category. In the afternoon of each Harvest day, the warehouse is open and free to the public to pick up donated materials. There is an abundance of energy in the room as materials are discovered, projects are imagined and new connections are made.

How did Dallas Fort Worth City Center make it work? The start of ZeroLandfill in Dallas Fort Worth was received with great excitement by both the design community and the public. Over a series of four weekends, the DFW area diverted 34,568 pounds of material from the landfill. The program consisted of three Pollination days. This year’s drop-off locations were in downtown Dallas at the American Airlines Center and at Texas Carpet Recycling in Grapevine. A series of four Harvest days occurred and our wonderful volunteers helped sort all the materials by categorizing in the ZeroLandfill warehouse (hosted by Texas Carpet Recycling, a subsidiary of Corporate Floors). In the afternoon of each Harvest Day, local teachers, artists, and other community members sifted through tons (literally) of tile, fabric, laminate chips, wallcovering, paint chips, carpet and many other materials. ZeroLandfill In the design and construction industry, we find ourselves creating a staggering amount of waste from expired or unused materials collected in our finish libraries and/or from job sites and projects that inevitably make their way to the landfill. With minimal storage and only able to do so many “home craft projects”, those within our industry find themselves throwing these materials in the trash. So in efforts to find a solution, we suggest ZeroLandfill, a word you probably have heard, seen or even used a couple of times. Some of you may be asking, “What is it?”, “How does it work?” or “What can I do to help?”. The Texas Oklahoma Chapter is very proud of our very own City Centers who within the last year have

helped with this program and are anxious to get the rest of our Chapter involved. What a great way to make a difference! Both Dallas Forth Worth and Austin City Centers established ZeroLandfill project sites and diverted an accumulation of over 57,000 pounds of expired samples!

So what is ZeroLandfill? ZeroLandfill is an award winning beneficial reuse program that originated in Cleveland, Ohio and has established project sites throughout the country. Since 2005, the ZeroLandfill project team has assisted the architectural and interior design community in identifying the use of waste materials, diverting the waste from local landfills and re-purposing back to the community thousands of pounds of expired specification samples. These materials hold value to the supply needs of local artists and art educators while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity.

workshop were held at Rockford Business Interiors in order to educate the design community as well as other IIDA City Centers of this amazing initiative. The excitement and enthusiasm were instant! With much work and volunteer time from an amazing Steering Committee, the event was planned and the details were set.

ZeroLandfill Austin partnered with Furniture Marketing Group (FMG) and Wilsonart International that brought the event to the Austin area. With much coordination, materials were scheduled for drop off at FMG for a series of three weeks. Interspersed with the drop off dates, the Austin City Center opened its doors to the public for a ZeroLandfill event the three Saturdays following the Pollination weeks.

With Texas schools in such a budget crisis and the tight economy, the use of such a program could not have come at a better time. The creative community was invited to come and pick samples up by the truck load and use them to invent something new!

ZeroLandfill partnered up with TIPS On Art Kids Summer Art Camp, providing materials for their summer day camp for the kids to create special pieces of art that were displayed at all ZeroLandfill events, The second weekend of ZeroLandfill the volunteer staff put on a “Frozen Yogurt Social” for the kids and parents to see their work on display and celebrate their artistic accomplishments.

After the ZeroLandfill event took place, the Austin City Center held its annual fashion show in September called “rEvolution-reDefine Design” where all of the Underwriters and participants were invited and showcased. The event exhibited some of the creative works that came from the ZeroLandfill event, including a showcase of projects from the TIPS On Art Kids Summer Art Camp. A fashion show opened up to the design firms around Austin, allowed designers to create outfits from Zerolandfill materials.

To celebrate Dallas Fort Worth City Center’s success and to thank all of the dedicated volunteers, a party was hosted at the Herman Miller showroom in the Design District. The artists were invited to showcase their projects made from the ZeroLandfill materials. Everyone involved was welcome to view the one of a kind art, collaborate with other artists and designers, and enjoy a night of great food, drinks, and music.

Look around your desk, workplace, construction site or your home. Anything you can do without is something others may be able to use. Everything from glass tiles, binders, fabrics, wall coverings, laminates, shingles, bricks, carpet samples, and paint chips can be helpful to teachers, artists, and crafters. You can even create a drop box in your office for expired samples. Every little bit helps. How do you get rid of those samples when the event is over? No worries. www.zerolandfill.net provides an opportunity where unwanted samples can be uploaded and individuals can correspond with the supplier for pick up! It’s that simple! What a great way to continue the idea of ZeroLandfill from afar.

DESIGN CHARRETTEThe charrette is a four-hour design competition administered by a design firm from the Chapter. We are currently looking for firm to create the design challenge! IIDA TX OK groups the top students from our Campus Centers (chosen by their school’s Director of Interior Design) into teams. ***PLEASE NOTE: Only TX OK Campus Center students are eligible to compete in the charrette. The charrette requires our most prestigious underwriter, who provides product information and samples for the students to include in their submission. Interior design education is constantly changing. How do interior design educators keep up with the changes? Fortunately, advisory councils, internship supervisors, and design professionals inform educators when modifications are needed. In addition to the traditional curriculum, today’s interior design student will have a variety of learning experiences involving technology, service learning, and studying abroad.

Educators strive to keep up with technology, and social media may be incorporated as a learning tool. Blogs, Facebook, Twitter, and texting have found their way into today’s interior design classrooms and studios. Online and distance education is also becoming commonplace in educating a new generation of designers. Through distance learning programs, design professionals may obtain a Master’s degree or Ph.D. in Environmental or Interior Design without the need to relocate. Graduate programs have expanded with the economic downturn as

designers strive to boost their credentials and sharpen their skills.

In a global economy, study abroad programs are also expanding. European destinations are the most common with students studying design in Paris or Italy. Many programs permit students to study abroad for a semester and return with course credit that can be substituted for classes they would have taken at their home campus. Students benefit from an enriching educational experience that is far beyond what they learn in the classroom.

Another way to instruct students outside of the traditional design studio is through service learning projects. Many programs incorporate Habitat for Humanity or other community service projects into their curriculum. Students may benefit from a variety of experiences including designing floorplans, meeting with families, installing sheetrock, or painting. Student designed houses have even been constructed.

Fortunately, educators have a variety of resources available to keep their skills and knowledge base current. Workshops and training are provided on many campuses. To further aid educators, regional and international conferences such as the Interior Design Educators Council provide presentations on innovative teaching strategies. At these conferences, professors, instructors, graduate students, and administrators come together to showcase research and teaching. Interior Design education is changing, and fortunately, educators have a variety of new alternatives for instruction.

The Dallas Fort Worth City Center successfully connected leaders locally by hosting this years’ IIDA TX OK Leaders Breakfast at The Dallas Museum of Art on October 12th. Over 50 volunteers from

the DFW architectural, interior and graphic design community participated in a nationwide award winning upcycling program called ZeroLandfill™ that supports the supply needs of local artists and arts educators while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity.

On November 18th, 2011, we hosted the First Annual “lavish” Interior Design Event + Auction benefitting Dwell with Dignity, a Dallas-based non-profit dedicated to helping families escape poverty and homelessness through design, one household at a time. And the 2nd Annual CRE8 Fashion will take place on April 27th, 2012.

Austin kicked off the year with Zero Landfill, an award winning reuse program that supports the supply needs of local artists and educators, while reducing pressure on local landfill capacity. ZeroLandfill Austin held their event

over three weekends, where the creative community was invited to come and pick these samples up for free. We diverted close to 30,000 lbs. of materials from the landfill!

Carpet, laminate, and vinyl wallcovering replaced cotton, silk, and wool at Austin’s first fashion show, rEvolution Runway. The event was held on September 23rd on the rooftop of Arthouse at the Jones Center. Design teams partnered with a softgood underwriter and Austin Fashion Association fashion designer to create outfits made of upcycled materials collected at Zero Landfill.

On December 15th, IIDA and AIA will host a combined holiday networking and charity event. The event will be held at a local shop and the entry fee is a donation to a local charity.

In October, Houston City Center’s annual fundraiser, Art & Artifacts 2011 had our most successful year ever. A Venetian Carnival masked theme sold out; with an attendance of 325 party goers. The A&D community came out in

full force! Our talented designers created over 40 masks that became auction items to raise money for the City Center. Thanks to generous Houston underwriting, ticket sales and silent auction items, over $25,000 was profitted to support next year’s programs and events.

HCC’s Program Chairs brought us an amazing tour of Gensler’s Houston Ballet Center for Dance. It is the largest professional dance facility of its kind in the US and we were fortunate to have IIDA Fellow, Marilyn Archer as well as Terry Newel and Richard “Max” Maxwell lead us through this IIDA Design Excellence Award winning project.

The Oklahoma City City Center is wrapping up an exciting year! We kicked off the year with a CEU, shortly followed by a very successful Color & Couture Fashion Show. We raised over $7,000 for Positive Tomorrows, a local non-

profit organization! After offering another CEU, the OKC City Center had their annual Bowl-A-Rama, with a reality show theme. We had our annual pin decorating contest as well as held a raffle for OIDC. Following the event, we were able to donate $500 to OIDC and intend to have a lot more to contribute in 2012. After that was our first combined event, Industry Rountable & Membership Drive. We were very pleased to have Past-President, John DuBard join us for the events!

In October, we hosted the Chapter’s GRA Forum with Allison Levy and it was a great night! We got positive feedback about the speaker & the content of the presentation. The IIDA San Antonio City Center has had a busy fall, as we have held and participated in a number of events throughout the community. Our Council Retreat kicked off the new Council year with a luau theme back in August.

In September, we held a Membership Event that was a success and brought together a diverse group of designers from all over the San Antonio area. Also in September we participated in the International Effort, ‘Parking Days’ which was spearheaded by the San Antonio Architecture Foundation. The event focuses on promoting green spaces in urban environments and the IIDA Parking Space was themed “The Living Living Room”.

In October, the San Antonio City Center Council joined the Bullock Brigade in the Walk to Defeat ALS, as the South Texas ALS Chapter is an organization that is very near and dear to our hearts. Last but not least, coming up on December 16th is our HUGE Winter Festival Event from 6 - 8 pm at Family Celebration in Boerne- it’s sure to be a lot of fun for everyone!

Over 250 design leaders and business innovators had the opportunity to experience the keynote speaker Neva Hall, Executive Vice President, Neiman Marcus Stores and the honoring of two leaders within the DFW business community who most embodies leadership characteristics through their contributions to the industry.

Tulsa City Center went MAD over their MadDash event held on Nov. 8th! This year’s event was a 50’s “Mad Men” theme, allowing attendees to show off their best threads to cast an eye their direction and gain votes for “Best Dressed”. The event really began to get razzed

as design professionals & students “speed-dated” their way through 16 booths. Vendor reps had the challenge of showcasing their product while showing these designers a boss of a time in a 5-minute time limit. MadDash was held at the popular Stokely Event Center, thanks to all that made the scene! Special thanks to KI for sponsoring our photo booth, as well as Knoll for sponsoring our delicious chocolate fountain. Tulsa’s next event is the annual holiday party. This year we teamed up with Young Architect’s Forum (YAF) to bring our members a festive mixer. It was held on Friday, Dec. 9th.

The overall concept of ‘connect’ is this: Connections run through the industry in an evident way: day to day workings of two materials becoming tighter through professional and social connections with clients and vendors. IIDA events and meetings do just this and IIDA is the business related forum to... Connect. In graphic form, the word Connect blends together and overlaps showing a slight transparency, showing the openness of our Association. Noticeably our list was long, but it has shortened.

As you are reading this and enjoying Chapter Insight, we hope you have also noticed the new format and content of our Chapter Newsletter. This too was on our list. Though it is a working piece of art, we have made an effort to include information and knowledge to either make you laugh, learn something or at least answer a few questions you might have about us.

Branding our IdentityOver the last few years the Texas Oklahoma Chapter Board(s) have worked diligently to rebrand our Chapter. We had no doubt it would be a challenge (a BIG challenge), to create an identity for our Chapter with twenty something designers sitting around the same table. My only excuse is it’s in our genes! We analyzed, sketched and debated numerous times which direction our Chapter needed to follow in terms of graphics and creating a strong brand.

Branding, according to Wikipedia, “began simply as a way to tell one person’s cattle from another by means of a hot iron stamp. The word brand has continued to evolve to encompass identity; it affects the personality of a product, company or service. It is defined by a perception, good or bad, that your customer or prospects have about you. “

No worries, by no means will we be branding our members like cattle; however, we do want those around us to recognize who we are, what it is we do and our responsibilities in the world of design. The goal of rebranding the Chapter was for the tone/manner, the look and feel to be concise, professional, and if you will, a little more contemporary flare. The brand would need an overall strength to it and implement the use of more white space. Though our Chapter is made of seven City Centers with all their own personalities, the idea of developing graphic standards within our Chapter was needed to keep a cohesive unit. For example, the City Center’s special events have their own character to match the event but see a strong identity placed in the composition as a happy marriage of the City Center and Chapter. As you might guess, our goal only grew from that point.

The Board approved many changes that we hope have been observed over this last year. Seven new

bold colors have been adopted and used throughout the Chapter in all logos and other media. Found within the old Chapter logo, the backslash between Texas and Oklahoma has been removed to be more legible when scaled down. Secondary and regional logos were introduced. New letterhead, envelopes,
