In this Report, I would like to focus
on a few key areas
that I particularly
want to draw
attention to. I add
of course, that those
areas by no means
exhaust everything
that has been going
on at the IICA this
year, but simply
reflect my particular
focus right now.
To begin with, on the 28th & 29th October
we held a successful Federal Council In
Person Meeting in Sydney. I really am
pleased that Federal Council In Person
Meetings will now be held in the city where
the Federal President resides. To me this
is a significant step in order to increase
exposure of the Federal Council to local
Branches and Members, particularly given
the quite significant changes that are
occurring at the Institute. It will provide an
opportunity for us to market the Federal
Council’s initiatives and in future provide a
forum for local Branches to provide input
and support to the Presidential candidate
they had nominated. As such, I would
encourage Local Branches to invite their
Members to attend at least part of the In
Person Meetings of Federal Council when
held in their local cities.
As advised earlier in the year the
IICA has a ‘new look’ website. The most
important thing about websites today is
that they are without doubt, THE most
critical first port of call for anyone even
vaguely curious about an organisation.
Websites therefore simply cannot afford to
be anything less than totally professional,
user friendly and always up dated if they
hope to maintain interest. I believe the
IICA site now ticks all the right boxes, so
well done again to everyone involved! If
you haven’t had a look around at the new
site I encourage you to do so and any
feedback is always welcome.
While on the subject of ticking boxes,
I find it heartening to see that this year
has seen considerable progress made
towards updating, refocusing and refining
the Institute’s ‘look and feel’. Our flyers,
logo, marketing and training information
materials are well on the way to successful
completion and now have a current look
together with a much more simplified set
of our core objectives, vision statement
and information about who we are and
what we are about.
Concurrent with the updated and
revised marketing and promotional
materials we have also now completed the
very necessary ‘tweaking’ of our Corporate
Associates Program (CAP) Membership
into the more broadly based Corporate
Industry Program (CIP). I personally
think if the IICA is to successfully meet
the opportunities and challenges that the
future will inevitably bring, we simply
had to broaden our corporate appeal to
include all the different potential groups
we want to have represented under the
IICA umbrella. The CIP certainly does that.
If you would like more information on the
Corporate Industry Program please contact
Cathie Tynan, [email protected]
The closer relationship the IICA has
forged with PACE is yet another avenue
for us to reach a wider audience - for our
training courses as well as for new CIP
and Individual Members. Alliances of this
kind are always works-in-progress and this
will be monitored to ensure we benefit in
terms of our desired outcomes. While we
are at present still bedding down the PACE
arrangements, I am quietly confident this
is a good fit for the IICA.
I would like to thank Federal Council
for the help and support I have received
since taking over as President. Sincerest
thanks to each of you! A heartfelt thank
you to a number of persons I have had the
pleasure to work particularly closely with.
Thank you Dirk, Jason, Cathie and Maruta.
I would like to wish all IICA Members a
safe and restful Christmas and New Year and
I look forward to a busy IICA year in 2012.

Friday 28 & Saturday 29 October 2011 Citygate Central Hotel, Sydney
The 2nd In Person Meeting of 2011 was
held in Sydney which is the home state of
our current President, Brett Simpson.
Items discussed at the meeting were:Ways to increase attendance at •
Technology Expos. Federal Council
decided to trial two ‘Solutions Expos’
to be part of the Sydney & Perth
Technology Expos in 2012. These two
Events will include presentations on
‘solutions’ to common problems rather
than just a ‘sales spiel’. The Sydney
Technology Expo will also be a ‘Focus on
Flow’ with only flow technology allowed
to be displayed.
In 2012 we will be presenting our •
training courses as “an engineering
education package”, where “package”
is the important theme. Our largest
market is the engineering firms where
the majority of engineering design is
now performed. The bulk of the detailed
design is done by young graduates, and
firms are aware of the need for the young
engineers to quickly gain practical skills.
This is also emphasised by Engineers
Australia - new engineers need 150 hours
of formal training over at least three
years to achieve PEng status.
The IICA will be involved in the •
Engineers Australia Careers Expos where
available in the capital cities. After the
success of the IICA attendance at the
Melbourne Careers Expo in early 2011
it was decided to be involved in other
areas. These Expos are attended by
many thousands of people at various
stages of their IC&A careers.
Federal Council started initial discussions •
on an award to a person or organisation
that has given a significant contribution
to the IC&A Industry. Further
information available later.
Due to increased costs it was decided •
not to run the IICA Promotion Stand at
NMW 2012 in Sydney. These costs would
need to be passed on to the Exhibitors.
Federal Council reluctantly agreed to •
increase the Individual Membership rate
to $175 for 2012.

IICA Federal Council In Person Meeting October 2011
In 2011 we scheduled 41 courses around
Australia, of which 15 (37%) achieved
enough interest to run. This is a similar
level to 2009 and 2010, but is less than
the level we aimed for at the beginning of
the year.
Of the courses that were run, six
have been in Queensland, four in NSW,
two in Victoria and WA and one in SA.
One engineering firm in Brisbane (Hatch)
has given a large amount of support and
only two courses would have proceeded in
Queensland without this support.
Only one remote location course
proceeded (Townsville) out of nine. We are
being told there is a demand for training in
remote areas but it is not being validated
by actual results.
Most people in the industry that I
spoke to this year were aware of IICA’s
training program - although most were not
aware of the types of courses we ran. Our
marketing activities seem to have a decent
reach, but perhaps not enough depth.
Most registrations came from
engineering firms; a few from end-user
organisations; very few from vendors.
About half of the registrations came in the
last two weeks - there is a reluctance to
commit to a course until the last minute in
case other plans change.
Our strategy for 2011 was one of
“learning what the market wanted” - that
is, schedule a lot of different courses, and
find out which courses and which locations
are in demand. However, because of the
lack of overall demand, we have only
gained partial “learning” this year.
In 2012 we will be presenting our
training courses
as “an engineering
education package”,
where “package” is
the important theme.
Our largest market is
the engineering firms
where the majority of
engineering design is
now performed. The
bulk of the detailed
design is done by
young graduates, and
firms are aware of the
need for the young
engineers to quickly
gain practical skills.
This is also emphasised by Engineers
Australia - new engineers need 150 hours
of formal training over at least three years
to achieve PEng status.
We are working with the Foundation
Fieldbus End-user Council in presenting
training on FF. We are also looking at
working with other training providers in
presenting courses where they add value
to IICA members.

As has recently been advised, from
2012 the revamped existing CAP
Membership will now be known as the
Corporate Industry Programme (CIP)
Membership category, and will embrace
the wider range of corporate sectors
engaged in instrumentation, control and
automation (including suppliers, end users,
consultants, contractors, academia and
so on).
For a number of years now, the Federal
Council of the Institute has been aware
that its Corporate Membership via the
CAP Membership category, has been very
successful in attracting supplier companies,
but not so much with companies that
comprise end users, consultants,
contractors and so on.
Council has frequently discussed this
and has always agreed that there are
overwhelming reasons why the IICA can
and should become a much more proactive
and effective voice and advocate for the
broader industry than it has been to date.
But Council has also agreed that this can
only happen successfully once the Institute
becomes more representative of the
diverse industry sectors it seeks
to represent.
All existing CAP benefits will remain and •
will be augmented with additional ones
designed to be attractive to all
CIP Members.
One of the more significant ‘value add’ •
benefits that existing CAP Members will
notice, will be the replacement of the
current two tier Primary and Secondary
memberships –(where only the Primary
Member is a full IICA Member). The
new CIP Membership will double the
number of full Memberships available
per Membership level.
A broader based IICA will gain greater •
credibility and clout when it works to
address problem areas in education or
in particular sections of manufacturing
and industry BECAUSE it really does
represents those wider IC&A sectors.
Most importantly, a broader Corporate •
Membership will be beneficial to
both suppliers and end users. Both
groups after all, are naturally mutually
dependent on each other and will have a
vested interest in being able to use the
IICA as a vehicle to engage with each
other directly, in an informal and neutral
environment as Corporate Members of
the IICA.
For a number of years now, the Federal
Council of the Institute has been aware
that its Corporate Membership via the
CAP Membership category, has been very
successful in attracting supplier companies,
but not so much with companies that
comprise end users, consultants,
contractors and so on.
Council has frequently discussed this
and has always agreed that there are
overwhelming reasons why the IICA can
and should become a much more proactive
and effective voice and advocate for the
broader industry than it has been to date.
But Council has also agreed that this can
only happen successfully once the
Institute becomes more representative of
the diverse industry sectors it seeks
to represent.
Current CAP Members will
automatically be transferred over to
the new CIP Membership and updated
information will be sought to update
our records with the new Member
representatives.

would like to consider transferring your
Membership to the Corporate Industry
Program, please contact Cathie Tynan for

Branch News
2011 has been a fantastic year for the
IICA Melbourne Branch and 2012 is looking
like it will be yet another successful year.
In 2011 the IICA Melbourne Branch
held multiple events throughout Victoria.
2011 started the year off with a bang, with
the great success of the Echuca Technology
Expo. This was followed by the Melbourne
Safety Seminar and Technology Expos in
Caulfield, Werribee and finished with the
very successful Warrnambool Expo.
In 2012 the IICA Melbourne Branch will
continue to organise multiple Technology
Expos throughout regional Victoria, with
planned Technology Expos in Campbellfield,
Traralgon, Shepparton and Geelong.
Along with our Melbourne Technology
Expos and the Melbourne Seminar we
will continue told hold monthly Technical
Presentations from February through until
November. In 2012 we are looking into
holding a couple of site visits which I am
sure you will find very interesting so look
out for these. If you have any requests for
topics please do not hesitate to contact
us as our goal is to provide information
which will be of interest to as many of our
members as possible.
We would like to thank all who visited
and participated in our events this year.
We wish you all a healthy and safe festive
season and look forward to you being a
part of the IICA events in 2012.
Caroline kuiper
IICA Events Coordinator / Melbourne Branch
Secretary
IICA Technical Night @ RMIT October Tech nightIan Gibson, an active member of the
IICA, ISO, IEC, as well Australian and
US Standards Committees provided the
audience at the October Tech night with a
discussion on valves versus variable speed
drives in the process environment. As with
all of Ian’s presentations it was informative
and well presented.
Thankyou Ian for your time and effort.

Perth Technology Expo ReportFeedback from the Perth exhibitors was
very positive with the venue, set up and
organisation of the whole event being
received in a very positive way. There were
a lower number of attendees (about 80)
this year which we think may have been
caused by three things, 1. date change
from last year bringing it forward two
weeks so it did not clash with CHOGM. 2.
school holidays and finally 3. clashing with
the Perth Royal Show week.
Feedback from attendees was very
positive and in my view those that did
attend were very impressed, the following
is a clip from an email received.
“On the topic of the trade-show, whilst
I’m not a regular trade-show attendee, of
those I’ve been to, I’d say that this event
was the best in recent years.
It’s probably the first time I actually
did not have enough time to check
everything that I would like to. I also need
to bring a back-pack next time to carry all
of the hand-outs in!
The only slightly disappointing thing
was the under-representation of control
valve vendors.”
The Expo was opened by Richard
Sellers (Department of Mines and
Petroleum) and feedback indicated that
having someone like this attending
improves the IICA standing within the WA
industrial community.
The Picture Board was new to this
year. The picture board of past IICA photos
were displayed on a separate table and
were very popular, especially with those
who have had past dealings with the IICA
and those who have lived in WA for many
years. Well worth the effort.
Looking forward to next year.

MELBOURNE BRANCH
Looking back on another year, that has
again passed all too quickly, the main
events for our Newcastle Branch have been
the Technology Expo and the
Safety Seminar.
The Technology Expo, as always, was
very popular with members and was well
attended. Once again, much appreciation
to all of our valued sponsors and exhibitors
who displayed an extensive range of
instrumentation and control products.
The Safety Seminar held at Wests
Mayfield in Newcastle saw a small group
of appreciative attendees turn up to
hear four Speakers who provided a very
informative day on industrial safety. It was
an excellent mix of speakers covering topics
which included OH&S Legislation and our
legal obligations, details on changes to
various standards, and alarm management
strategies. All speakers did an excellent
job covering the range of safety topics
presented and was very much appreciated
by all those in attendance.
Unfortunately the proposed ISA
courses planned to coincide with the
Technology Expo did not attract sufficient
numbers to proceed – we will try again next
year, please promote the courses with
other colleagues.
Following this year’s AGM we are
currently functioning without a Chairperson
so I would encourage all those eager and
willing to assist in promoting the IICA in
the Hunter Region to come along to our
committee meetings.
On behalf of the IICA Newcastle Branch
Committee, we wish you and your families a
very safe and happy Christmas.
Regards
Stuart Henderson
IICA Newcastle Branch Secretary
NEWCASTLE BRANCH
It has been a successful year of activity
and events for the IICA Perth Branch this
year, with a huge turnout for the newly
named Technology Expo held for the
second time at the Perth Convention
and Exhibition Centre and great support
from Vendors.
We look forward to the end of year
Christmas breakfast to bring the year
to a close and hope for all attending to
participate in donating to our chosen
charity. Princess Margaret Hospital for
Children appreciates the support from the
IICA Perth Branch each year.
I would like take this opportunity
to thank the WA committee for all their
hard work and commitment. Membership
numbers are strong and continuing
to grow.
Thank you to all our members and all
the feedback you provide to enable us to
move forward and tailor events to suit
your needs.
I wish you a safe and happy

IICA Sydney Branch Holds Diverse Range of Events in 2011
The IICA Sydney Branch held another
successful year of events, meetings and
courses for 2011.
Technical Nights with highly respected
local and international speakers always
drew a large crowd of members and
student members at each event
ranging from a rare insight into the ISA
organisation in the US, Verification VS
Calibration of Magnetic Flow Meters, and
Remote Monitoring.
We held the Wollongong Technology
Expo in May at WIN Stadium and with
over 110 visitors, the venue was packed
for most of the afternoon. Feedback
from exhibitors was excellent and there
was a large range of end-users from the
Illawarra area.
We held an @Home event at Rockwell
Australia which was an excellent glimpse
into their products and their site at
Lane Cove.
For the end of July, we celebrated our
annual Christmas in July Dinner at Dedes
Restaurant at Abbotsford. Three courses
of “chrismassy” fare and some lovely wine
had everyone in good spirits and the usual
enormous heap of gifts, toys and presents
that we were able to donate to Barnardos
was proof that we have a very generous
and kind hearted membership.
The Sydney Technology Expo & Safety
Seminar 2011 were held in October. We
returned to the Marconi Club at Bossley
Park and welcomed over 100 visitors. On
the same day and same venue we ran
the IICA Safety Seminar. The IICA 2011
Safety Seminar series brings together
experts in their field to present their
experience and knowledge of updates to
the law, standards and alarms with respect
to automation. This was followed by an
in-depth workshop on Risk Assessment,
with expert practitioners facilitating and
de-mystifying this often misunderstood,
but vital tool for anyone involved in safety.
HUGE thanks to our Sponsors: Emerson
Process Management, Fluke Australia, I&E
Systems, Rockwell Australia & Siemens,
and supported by IndustrySearch.
In November, the Sydney Branch held
two ISA courses on consecutive days at
ANSTO, Lucas Heights: ISA EC50C Safety
Instrumented Systems facilitated by Tahir
Rafique and ISA IC30CI Introduction to
SCADA Systems Integration facilitated by
Mark Ickinger.
We had 10 delegates for each course
which is an encouraging increase over the
past 18 months.
Our final event for 2011 was our
Members Trivia Night and Social Drinks
held again at the NSW Rugby Club. The
reigning champions, Schneider-Electric
were overthrown by Bürkert Fluid Control
Systems! Congratulations Team Bürkert!!
Huge thanks to our sponsors of the
evening, OEM Technology Solutions,
Bürkert Fluid Control Systems, Weidmuller,
Samson Controls, SATEC, Schneider-
Electric & Endress+Hauser.
The Sydney Branch has finalised
its planning for events for 2012. We
will be holding a Regional Road Show
in Goulburn & Griffith in March 2012,
a Sydney Technology Expo & Seminar
in October and of course, our various
Technical Nights, @Homes, ISA courses,
Social events and dinners. We will also be
arranging tours to ANSTO at Lucas Heights
throughout the year. There will be only 20
per tour so if you would like to register
your interest to ensure your space, please
email Julie [email protected] – registrations
will be FREE and taken on a first-in basis.
If you would like any further
information about the IICA Sydney Branch
and our events coming up, please contact
We hope you all have a safe and
happy holiday season and we look forward
to seeing you at our events in 2012!

At the IICA October In Person Meeting a
Certificate of Appreciation was presented
to Ross Colvin from Hatch Brisbane. Hatch
has supported the IICA immensely recently
by encouraging their graduate engineers
to register to attend a number of IICA/ISA
Professional Development Courses and also
graciously allowing the Courses to be run
at the Hatch premises in Brisbane.
Ross Colvin said:Continuing education is an essential part of
current professional engineering practice
and is also a requirement of both IE Aust
(150 hours/3 years) and the Qld Board of
Professional Engineers. Hatch, like others,
employs a number of young graduate
engineers each year direct from University
into an IE Aust approved Professional
Development Programme (PDP) of
several years duration, with a view to
obtaining CPEng (and subsequently RPEQ
in Qld). Often these graduates have
limited exposure to practical industrial
instrumentation and control (I&C) and
systems, apart from vacation practice,
and require extensive industry training.
University graduates employed for these roles
are often Electrical, IT, Mechatronics etc.
The consulting engineering field covers
diverse involvement from feasibility study
to full EPCM , commissioning, ramp up
and site operations support and requires
an understanding of an extensive range of
technical, project and team skills within the
Systems and Process Control (S&PC) group.
A variety of in-house courses, vendor
training, lunch and learn sessions and
courses by selected external providers are
utilised to develop these skills over several
years in significant numbers of S&PC staff.
IICA are one of these essential external
industry orientated educational service
providers who specifically offer relevant,
cost effective, targeted training for small
groups with ISA accredited courses for
engineers across the broad spectrum from
basic P&ID development through field

SYDNEY BRANCH
2011 has been a busy and sometimes
tumultuous year for the Brisbane
Branch yet despite the challenges the
Branch is pressing ahead with initiatives
aimed at adding value for its members.
These include advancing professional
development programs aimed at
automation, control and instrumentation
professionals in conjunction with Engineers
Australia and we hope respective academic
institutions throughout the greater
Brisbane and beyond regions. Further
initiatives include technical event evenings
around industries typical to Queensland
such as coal seam gas and mining and
pending impact to industry of the Carbon
Tax etc.
Our year in review Regretfully the initial Safety Seminar set
down for Brisbane was postponed at the
very last minute due to the Chilean Ash
Cloud with three out of the four speakers
unable to fly out from Melbourne and
Adelaide. However, the rescheduled Safety
Seminar was successfully run in early
November and the attendees welcomed
the indepth knowledge obtained from the
presentations. The committee
wishes to thank the registrants for their
understanding of the situation which
thankfully is not a common event.
In an attempt to be more inclusive,
the Brisbane Technology Expo (formerly
IICA Table Top) was held at the BTP
Technology & Conference Centre on the
31st of August. This was an attempt to
bring the Technology Expo’s closer to
industry but regretfully attendee numbers
were not as good as expected and the
committee remains open to discussions
on locations over coming years. For
2012, the IICA Technology Expo will
return to the CBD with a focus centred
on industries and topical issues such as
those discussed above. Again, as a servant
to our constituents, we remain open to
suggestions and these can be forwarded to
the contact details below.
With respect to training and professional
development for its members, four ISA
Professional Development Courses were run
in Brisbane during 2011. The committee
remains indebted to committee members
Ross Colvin from Hatch and IICA Federal
Training Director Graham Moss: both men
have proved instrumental in our continued
efforts at providing value for our members.
Finally, I wish to express my gratitude
to the Brisbane Branch Committee
Members for their support throughout the
year. These are unpaid roles with busy
executives/professionals and I wish to
thank them individually: Graham Moss
IICA, Ross Colvin HATCH, Jason Freyling
Origin Energy, Frank Silberberg Group
Instrumentation, John Pietila now retired
or at least we thought as he takes on
a project here and there. I want also
to thank the vendors whose support on
initiatives like Technology Expos and
Seminars mean we can bring together the
industry with technological updates and
topics of interest. Finally, a big thank you
to the ladies in the Federal Office for their
assistance during the year: quote/unquote
you are the glue helping us to provide this
service for our members.
As a final, thank you to our continuing
and newer members: your continued
support is most appreciated. Please have a
safe, prosperous and joyous Christmas and
New Year and I and the committee look
forward to serving you in 2012.
Regards,
Brett Biondi
