The global internet traffic grows every year. In 2016, 96 Exabyte’s a month went out over the digital system and is expected to grow by 160 Zettabytes in 2025. An Exabyte represents one billion-billion bytes of data while a Zettabyte represents a billion-trillion bytes of data. This data explosion unfortunately presents an opportunity for malware, spam, and ransomware attacks. Ransomware attacks targeting business have tripled since 2016 and continue to grow. In May 2019, Adam Connor, a national cyber liability specialist spoke on how cyber can affect all our lives and how the data that it produces drives all companies. Once your system has been breached a plan needs to take place. What is your current plan for cyber-attacks? Adam has been with RPS-Chicago since 2013.

University of Houston-Downtown insurance and risk management students attended the Insurance Council of Texas’ Annual Property & Casualty Symposium in Austin last week and participated in a resume preparation and interview techniques class prior to Speed Interview sessions with 23 companies and agencies seeking new talent. The students and interviewers then attended a private reception where they could further explore one another’s qualities to determine whether they are a good fit for one another.

UH-Downtown students who attended included Cassandra Cadriel, Jennifer Calandra, Carmela Cancino, Ricardo Melchor, Jose Salinas and Bryan Sanders. Other universities involved included University of Houston, UT – Dallas, UT – Rio Grande Valley, UT – San Antonio, St. Mary’s, University North Texas and Baylor University.

Since 2002, the ICT Education Foundation has raised and awarded over $1 million in scholarships

UHD STUDENTS ATTEND ICT SYMPOSIUM

to Texas university students interested in careers in insurance and risk management. “The speed interview sessions provide a great opportunity for students and companies,” stated ICT’s Mark Hanna, who has coordinated with the universities since the program’s inception. “A third of the students who participated last year secured career positions in the property-casualty industry, and the interviewing companies reported that this year’s candidates were the best group of job-seeking students to date.”

“I am very impressed with our students’ maturity and focus on the career-seeking process,” stated Professor Priscilla Oehlert, Director of the UHD insurance program. “They are inquisitive and asking pertinent and relevant questions in their efforts to learn about the variety of roles within the industry and to discern what will be a good fit for them so that they can immediately contribute to the entity with which they are employed.”

“This was the best opportunity I’ve had to connect with insurance entities that have open positions and are actively recruiting new employees,” stated Ricardo Melchor. “Within days after the Symposium, I had been contacted by several companies to schedule interviews with their teams in their offices. The ICT experience was unique and provided the venue, contacts and opportunities to fast-forward my knowledge and ability to secure an insurance industry career.”

“Students are getting the whole spectrum of information about different industry jobs descriptions, positions currently available, and opportunities to customize our resumes, practice interviewing skills, and network with hiring managers and human resources staff through ICT,” observed Jose Salinas, UH-D senior. “This is exactly what we need to successfully navigate our paths from students to industry professionals.”

This is the 41st Anniversary of IIAH honoring the Houston Fire Department and its heroic Firefighters. We were delighted to have several dignitaries from the Houston Fire Department joining us to honor our Firefighter of the Year Award finalists and recipients.

• Assistant Chief Rodney West• Assistant Chief Michelle Bentley• Assistant Chief Isaac Garcia• Assistant Chief Justin Wells• Assistant Chief Alfredo Martinez• Assistant Chief Richard Mann• Public Information Officer Sheldra Brigham• Alicia Breaux, HFD Administrative Specialist • Assistant Chief Michael Mire• Assistant Chief Michelle McLeod

IIAH President, Wes Kurtz, addressed the crowd: We were tremendously honored to have a special group joining us who are our 2019 Firefighter of the Year Award Winners. And this year was special because we couldn’t decide on one incident or officer so we honored all the officers. These are people in our communities who risk their lives to save ours, who run towards burning buildings while we run away, who put their lives on the line in attempt to save someone they do not know. They make their way through flood waters without protective gear to fight a fire. They think quickly in life or death situations to save citizens’ lives. They render aid and assistance to their fellow firefighters and HPD officers. They volunteer on task forces that are deployed in crucial search and rescue missions.

Honoring those representing Stations 18, 19, 20, 27 and 40:Firefighter/Paramedic Michael EsparzaFirefighter/Paramedic Michael RangelFirefighter/Paramedic Jason ParamoreFirefighter/Paramedic Juan BalandranFirefighter/Paramedic Robert MenaEngineer/Operator-Paramedic Jason WeyerEngineer/Operator-Paramedic Horacio HernandezFirefighter/EMT Raul SalazarFirefighter/EMT Nelson GonzalesDistrict Fire Captain Christopher Chavez

Every firefighter you meet will downplay these actions and tell you that its part of the job and it just happened to be their shift…that they did what they were trained to do. Maybe that’s true because I’m certain there are hundreds of rescues that we don’t hear about but then that’s all the more reason to honor the men and women who are here today and for us to show our gratitude and respect for what they do. This lunch just isn’t enough to convey the incredible bravery and selflessness of these individuals. President, Kurtz, shared the following excerpts from their nomination letters.

During an HPD execution of a warrant, multiple police personnel and suspects were either injured or shot. HFD employees arrived quickly and while the scene was still unsecured, began assessing and treating those whom they could reach. HFD worked with Life Flight personnel to ensure that each officer injured was transported to the hospital in the most expeditious manner, and therefore were integral in the outcome being as positive as we could hope for. While it is a common occurrence for the HPD and HFD work together to protect and save lives, it is not often that HFD personnel are called upon to treat so many of our law enforcement officers at one. The magnitude and chaos of this type of scene cannot amply be described in correspondence of this nature. HPD is appreciative of not only the medical

An “Assist the Officer” call came over the radio. HFD arrived and began treating the officer that had been struck by a vehicle while assisting officers with traffic control. HFD stepped up numerous times while on scene offering to assist HPD, even after the officer and citizen were transported, showing great professional courtesy. They set up an escort to transport t the officer to Southwest Memorial Hospital in an expeditious manner. The actions and dedication to duty of all the officers, dispatchers and firefighters involved in this incident bring great credit upon themselves, the HPD and the HFD. Throughout the incident they displayed outstanding team work and demonstrated exceptional professionalism. As a result, here was excellent teamwork and communication by multiple departments.

This year’s finalists show the incredible range of service that helps make our Fire Department among the best in the country. I heard time after time…. Overall crew effort, well-seasoned veterans, trust and faith in my crew’s knowledge and capabilities, complete faith in my Captain’s leadership to put me where I need to be. Each incident this year came with added extraordinary circumstances. Ones that at any time could have caused a more perilous outcome. Each crew’s response to the circumstances surrounding each incident exemplifies how each of the separate pieces: education, training, service and execution fit together to make one cohesive unit.

As in year’s past, our award is certainly deserved and could truly go to any member of HFD for their service and sacrifice. Which is why this year, we will honor all those at the Houston Fire Dept. for their bravery and hard work by making a contribution in your names to the Firefighter Foundation of Houston. Mr. Lee Vela, chairman of the Foundation, could you please join me on the podium to accept this check and make a few remarks about the Foundation.

We thank all of you for your service to our industry and most importantly to our community!

INDEPENDENT AGENT KEY LEGISLATIVE ISSUES DURING THIS SESSION

TWIA SUNSET REVIEW

Modernization of TWIA

m Direct Billing of customers

m Improve and Streamline the application process

m Technology Improvements to include service to customers and agents

m Adequate and Predictable funding for multiple storms

FLOOD COVERAGE NOTIFICATION

Hurricane Harvey disclosed that many people were not prepared for the possibility of flooding. It has been reported that

25% of the homeowners in Harris County and Southeast Texas did not carry flood insurance. IIAT believes that a notice

should be attached to every homeowner policy stating that flood insurance is not afforded by the homeowner policy.

m Homeowner insurers must include notice advising that flood and law and ordinance coverage is not covered under the policy;

m Notification should be added in a conspicuous place on the policy;

m Notice should include a statement to contact your agent to discuss flood insurance

COMMERCIAL COVERAGE CHANGE NOTIFICATION

The Texas Insurance Code requires that notification of changes in coverage must be provided, however; there is no

requirement of where notification is to be located within the policy or to identify what changes have been made.

Adds commercial property to Section 551 of Texas Insurance Code;

Plain language notification must disclose any new coverage in the renewal policy;

Notice must be provided to agents and consumers prior to the use of new policy forms;

Clarifies that proper notification does not require a non-renewal notice

IMPACT needs your support to continue to improve Agent and Client Issues!

402018-19 4th Edition houston insurance news

Houston’s IIAH contingent, Jeff Brady, Kyle Dean and Scott West departed Houston at 10 am on Tuesday, May 6 for our annual meet and greet in D.C. Also on the flight were Congressmen Michael Cloud (TX 27, Corpus Christi area) and Pete Olson (TX 22, Sugarland and Pearland). We had good conversations with both prior to and during the flight, because your legislative team never rests!

Wednesday started early for us, between meetings at the conference and appointments on the Hill. We met with Pete Olson, Randy Weber, Kevin Brady, Dan Crenshaw, Senator John Cornyn and the legislative aide for Brian Babin.

Late that afternoon your national association hosted a reception at their D.C. offices for members of Congress and large $1000 or more) Insurpac donors. It was well attended and a great opportunity to meet Congressional leaders from both parties.

The IIAT delegation hosted a nighttime bus tour of the Capital, followed by a visit to the historical Hays-Adams Hotel bar, the scene of many a late-night deal making by members of Congress. This particular night, the only deals cut were who was going to pick up the bar tab for our group!

Thursday started with a 7:15 a.m. breakfast meeting for the conference attendees. More can be found on the speakers in the IIABA publications – unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay the entire breakfast, as Kyle and I had a meeting at 8:45 with Sylvia Garcia, the new representative for north Houston. Followed by meetings with Michael McCaul’s aide (TX 10, stretching from Austin to Tomball), Al Green, Lizzie Fletcher, Senator Ted Cruz and Bill Flores. Representative Flores, whose district encompasses Bryan/College Station, graciously accommodated 5 North Texas University Students and their professor in a last minute add on to our group. He asked each their major, career plans and answered their questions.

That evening ended with a dinner hosted by IIAT at a very nice local restaurant. A dozen agents and their significant others, from all regions of the state, were attending.

As to what we were asking our members of Congress? The topics don’t vary much year-to-year.

• Long term extension of the flood insurance program

• Long term extension of the TRIA/TRIP program, scheduled to expire December 31, 2020

• Elimination of the Cadillac Tax and protection of Group Health Insurance for businesses

• Maintain current tax regulations as they are applied to agencies past the 2025 expiration.

• Other positions discussed were eliminating the Federal Insurance Office as it has the potential to override state insurance departments, protecting commissions for the Crop Insurance Program and having a discussion of national Cybersecurity standards that could be implemented without overriding state standards.

What we see in D.C. fits into the narrative that you read and hear; House leadership with a significant amount of disfunction and the Senate moving slowly on bills. Various House committees seem to be spending a huge amount of time on investigations and little time on substantive bills. The Senate, because of their need for consensus, does pass bills, but very slowly. And every bill passed by the Senate requires a corresponding House vote. Consensus is rare in a divided Congress.

Your attending members from IIAH make this trek annually, taking time from their business, to show Congress that we are paying attention to legislation. We are representing all insurance agents, brokers and clients, pursuing legislation that keeps our businesses and clients secure. We welcome additional local leader/agents to join the effort. The sightseeing in D.C. and comradery make this an exceptional trip!

HARCO Insurance Services celebrates 50 years of service to Industry, Community, Staff and our Clients.

On July 1, 2019, HARCO celebrated its 50th Anniversary with a luncheon for staff and lots of memories being shared. HARCO presented each person with a 50th Anniversary lapel pin as symbol of their appreciation and celebration.

Attending the luncheon was Willis Hargrave and wife, Dana. Willis is the original founder of HARCO in 1969. Willis then sold HARCO on January 1, 2000 to Josh Hargrave and Gerri Rougeau.

Willis entertained everyone with stories from the earlier days of HARCO and thanked everyone for taking good care of the clients and agency he cares so much about.

HARCO continues to serve in various areas of our industry and is proud to have Chris Goff, V-Pres of Benefits, serving as President-Elect for IIAH.

HARCO community involvement and charitable activities keep us all busy and thankful we can participate on behalf of the many well deserved benefactors.

Our staff and clients are the foundation HARCO is built upon. We are proud of our staff tenure and their ability to service our clients in a manner that merits confidence and loyalty. We thank our staff and clients every opportunity we have for being a vital part of HARCO!

Special thanks go out to all our carriers, industry friends and associates that have worked with us over the years. These relationships have enabled us to achieve our 50 years!!!

We still can’t believe we are 50 Years Young!!!
