Living Columbellidae Part 85 By Wesley M. Thorsson and Kevin Monsecour with considerable assistance by
Dr. Marta deMaintenon, University of Hawaii, Hilo.
Presentation This is a continuation of a series of articles that
will eventually be produced as a CD with monthly articles rearranged in chapter order. Articles deal with additions to the final CD. Page headers give the chapter (genus or subgenus) for the page and current genus and species of the specimens on the page. Parts: A part is the sequential number of the article in this series which may be in any of the monthly sections of IHSN. Chapters: Each chapter holds the portion of articles of this series in one genus or subgenus with each genus and subgenus assigned a chapter num-ber. This reflects the tendency of subgenera to be-come genera with time. Filing articles: Articles contains pages from several chapters that may have already been treated. It is suggested that you treat these articles as pages in a loose leaf binder and file pages in Chapter order with species in a chapter arranged in alphabetical order rather than filing by part number. This will approximate the final CD book. Reason for articles not being in chapter order
This series of articles is a book as it is being compiled out of genus and species order as material becomes available. I have a large collection of pho-tographs of columbellids that are filed in genus and species order and additional photos are added as they are received.
I deal with the photographs in my files in the file name order for these articles taking the next photo set not already published. In reviewing the species being dealt with, the genus in my file names is frequently changed (and sometimes changed again after my reviewers comment). Sometimes the current species name is also changed. This results in an article covering several chapters and chapters out of order. Photos: A number of photos of different speci-mens
of some species will be included to allow an indication of the range of variability of shell shape, sculpture, color patterns; and animal color pat-terns within a species. It is especially desirable to include photos of type specimens.
Background This series of articles was initiated after plac-
ing many columbellid photos in IHSN and having iden-tification difficulties with almost all speci-mens. A number of errors were made. Dr. Marta deMainte-non gave programs on Columbellidae to HMS in October 2001 and October 2002. These gave a better insight into placement of species into genera.
The primary reference for Hawaiian species for many people in Hawaii up to this time had been Columbellidae of Hawaii: an update by Dr. Don E. Hemmes, Stan Jazwinski and Merton Goldsmith published in Hawaiian Shell News of March 1990, mostly with 2.25 x 1.4 inch pictures in color.
The other prime references for species not found in Hawaii were Cernohorsky, 1972, Marine Shells of the Pacific, Volume II, Pacific Publica-tions, Sydney, Australia, pages 132 to 138 and black & white plates 40 and 41. Kaicher’s cards on Columbellidae were also of importance to many shellers, but I did not hold those cards until this series was under way.
Originally, columbellids were placed in Buc-cinidae. Then most early authors placed all co-lumbellids in Columbellidae. With the passage of time, and increase in knowledge, new genera were added to accommodate new and revised species names. After more study, a number of species were shifted from Columbella to the new genera. This can be seen when looking at species names as the names are often in parentheses, indicating that the genus has been changed from the original ge-nus.
