 A boy scout or girl scout troop are by necessity, structured environments. 

A Venture Crew, by definition, maintains a very flexible atmosphere.

A Venture Crew is a fun-filled , co-ed organization run by teens, designed to help develop leadership and teamwork through outdoor adventures and unique outings and activities. Although co-ed, it's a separate division of the Boy Scouts of America. TheVenturing program started in 1998 and is an evolution of Exploring, which BSA operated for decades.

Venturing is a young adult development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 13 1/2 (or have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age.

Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults.

Venturing is based on a unique and dynamic relationship between youth, adult leaders, and organizations in their communities. It IS is a program of exciting and meaningful activities that helps youth pursue their special interests, to grow, to develop leadership skills, and to become good citizens.

Venturing crews can specialize in a variety of avocation or hobby interests.

What a Venturing Crew IS NOT- -- A group of (exclusive) older teens in a troop setting doing "older" activities that younger scouts are not allowed to do...

There are no surprises.  

All costs to run your Crew are itemized. 

A youth member (with the assistance of an adult) will keep the books (be the Treasurer)

Annual CREW 7016 Dues are $ 23.00 per year, substantially lower than $60-$100 usually charged by many troops.

What about the events and super-outings? 

Unlike a typical troop outing where before each outing - parents may have to scramble to come up with more (and more) money for their youth to participate; the major CREW events are all preplanned and budgeted (by the Crew members) … Usually by FUNDRAISING!-

A Venture Crew oftentimes specializes in a certain area of activities... (although many Crews do not specialize.). Whatever the Crew members want to do (Adult Advisors do not make these decisions!)

Some Venture Crews are all about high adventure .. The Sky is the limit

There is a Venture Crew ... that goes on Geo-caching adventures There is a Venture Crew ... that has adventures in Caving (Carlsbad Caverns, Oregon

National Caverns) There is a Venture Crew ... that goes on rock-climbing adventures (not at the local

climbing walls) There is a Venture Crew ... that goes on SCUBA diving trips There is a Venture Crew ... that concentrate on shooting sports and competitions

(think pistols, rifles, etc..) There is a Venture Crew ... that does Outback camping (Alaska, Northwest Passage,

Congo, Australia?) There is a Venture Crew ... that does College Campus camping (Harvard anyone) There is a Venture Crew ... that goes on Metro-Treks ( New York City with a GPS?) There is a Venture Crew ... that concentrates on entrepreneurship (running a

- A Venture Crew is organized, operated and run by the young adult members- 

Unlike a scouting troop where a PLC meets to give a list of activities to the scoutmaster for approval that the youth would like to do, there are no adults that will say, " NO, you will not do that". However, it is up to the youth members to organize, plan and execute all the events. Naturally, since, the event is handled by the Crew -if the Venturers do not follow through, there is no event.

If a Crew wants do a specific outing... it is up to the Crew members to investigate, budget, plan and execute the event (with Adult Advisor/Councelor assistance)

A Leadership Committee -  president, vice-presidents, program chair, treasurer  - is elected (every 6 months, once a year, etc..) to help facilitate the Crew. Adult Advisors do not say, " No, you cannot be elected this time " It is up to the Crew as to what young adults serve what leadership positions

What will OUR Venture Crew DO? Whatever YOUR Crew decides.

Challenging physical activities with boys/girls their own age.

Recognition of their “older” status. Activities with girls/boys. Control of their environment. Independence. To explore and experience their world. A sense of belonging and acceptance

from their peer group, inclusion in a “gang.”

Must be at least a First Class earned as a Boy Scout or Varsity Scout.

Requirements remain the same. Board of review can be conducted by the troop

or crew. If registered in both the troop and crew, can

receive multiple credit for many Bronze, Gold, Silver and Ranger requirements.

May use crew leadership positions and participation.

Venture Crew 7016 is a COED Crew. There are currently a number of female teens in our Crew.

Female Venturers successfully participate in all high adventure activities, outings and camping adventures (60 mile bike trips, backpacking, canoeing, sailing, etc..)

Venturers, male and female, can assist other scouting units with Leadership in preparing and teaching the younger boys/girls.

The crew provides older scouts (who otherwise become disinterested in scouting at the age of driving and dating) with a program that retains their interest by allowing them to pursue higher adventure with male/female peers and friends.

Co-education fosters mature, responsible and respectful relationships.
