ALOHA, EMilY OZEKI

I read about 'OHANA on the web site of the Star Bulletin, Thought I'd give it a try and give a chance to my "portagee mouth" relatives. If it is as good as it sounds, they' ll spread the word!

I wasn't born in Hawai'i , but I've lived there many years, First went there by boat in 1940! Then in 1958 went th ere to teach. Married there in 1971 but in 1976 my husband was transferred to Yuma, AZ, So we miSS Hawai' i Nei and like to read about it.

'OHANA MAGAZINE

I have received two issues of the 'GHANA so far, and the magazine and articles are great. After high school in '56, I em igrated to the States and attended co llege in Chicago, Il , Not having the monetary resources to go "home," I was homesick a lot. I remember listening to radio programs such as "Hawa ii Cal ls." Does anyone with a sharper mind remember "Hawaii Ca ll s," who was the host and where did the broadcast originate from?

After retirement from the mili tary, I realized that a home in Hawai ' i was out of th e Question. Too Costl y, I chose the next best thing - Paradise, CA, (appropriate name huh?)

HAWAIIAN MUSIC REVI EW

BY ALOHA JOE

HAWAII ' S M U S I C SCE N E

Every week I'm to my hips in new Island releases. In the moil I find Rock & Roll. Jazz. Reggae. Classical. Pop, Hip·Hop. Rap, Latin as well as traditional Hawaiian, Island Contemporary, and a bunch I can·t c lassify.

Hawaii's music scene today is VERY eclectic. Most music c rosses over into other areas and thereby c louds the mind of the listener and this reviewer. (Much like the ·Shadow·). But you con·t keep a good reviewer down. You can try , but you can't succeed.

Here are a few albums that I really like and if you like Hawaiian music, no make that LOVE Hawaiian music you, must add these to your collection.

PO'OKElA CHANTS - Mark Keali'i Ho ' omalu (Dudoit Productions -

Honolulu) • This release features both classical and original Hawaiian poetry performed by Mark Keeli'i Ho'omalu . Mark, who makes his home in Northern California, was born and raised in Aleo, O'ahu. His resume is varied . He is a dancer, composer, chanter, kumu hula, etc. On this release we hear 12 powerful and rhythmic chants. If you need a " lift" check out "Ka Huaka'i Pele : "Kawika : o r ·Holo Ana 0 Kalakaua." You won't be able to keep your feet or body st ill and you'll feel rejuvenated . This is a wonder· ful a lbum that should be in line for a bunch of awards next year.

HISTORY OF THE HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR - Various Artists (Cord International -Hana Ola Records) • Seventy + years in the making, th is long·awaited album is finally in release. Cord Internat ional has painstakingly restored this defin itive

recorded history of The Hawaiian Steel Guitar. The liner notes, writte n by the dean of vintage Hawaiian music, Harry B. Soria, Jr. , are so detailed and informotive. they should be sold separately. The 23 recordings follow the evolution of the steel g u itar and in clude the first steel recording mode in 1927 b y David Napihi Burrows. Other selectio ns include "Kamehameha Woltz : Moona C himes: Hila March : "Beautiful Mehealani Moon," and many others. For all o f the aspiring steel guitar players around, Harry B. & Cord Inte rnational have inc luded the various instrument t unings used o n the a lbum.

GREAT GRANDMOTHER, GREAT GRANDSON - Kapono Beamer (The Mountain Apple Company) • Helen Desha Beame r became interested in music at a very young age. She taught herself music notation a n d I' m glad she did . Ms. Beamer's music is both haunting and beautiful. Because she spoke Hawaiian fluen t ly, her ly rics c reate portraits of the Islands tha t transcend description. In th is release, Kopono Beamer , h er Grea t Grandson , plays instrumental versions of his great grandmoth e r's music w it h g reat fee ling. He writes. A Night at the Nii Hoku Hanohano

Awards 1999. by Aloha Joe

WHO'S WHO OF HAWAIIAN MUS IC

The who's who of Hawaiian music was at the 22nd a nnual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards ceremony a t the Sheraton

Waikiki Hotel on May 23.

Before the award presentations, I was poised on the "Red Carpet Area· ready to soy aloha to the cream of Island entertainment. My brand new BIG YEll OW sign with a REAL· lY BIG red Aloha Joe welcomed all arrivees. I met, talked. and hugged everybody in the biz - Harry B. Soria , Jr., Kawai Cocket, Pure Heart, Teresa Bright, Henry Kapono, No leo Pilimehana, Benny Kalama, JOY, Bobby Ingano, Daniel Ho,

Roy & Kathy Sakuma, and many more.

My table in the Sheraton Waikiki ballroom is adjacent to our dear friends, Don "Flip" McDermott & Cindy lance from Hula Records. (Hula Records has a lot of nominations tonight). Our tablemates included former No Hoku Award winner, Darlene Ahuna and husband J&J , Cathy 1m from This Week Magazine and Rhea Thielen of Kealana Production Services. There were a lso several folks who "never m iSS my radio show' Ken & Sharon Taubel from Ventura, California and Joe & Donna Manz from Vienna, Vi rginia who traveled to Waikiki to be part of this exciting evening. During dinner we could

hear the strains of The Moe Keele Trio.

Before the telecast several awards were presented; Hokus for Engineering , liner Notes, Graphics and two music awards, Single of the Year and Compilation Album.

The first music award of the evening was not televised. ' Single o f the Year" _ I looked around as the names were read and I could see the tension on the faces of the nomi

nees. (One of them was at our table.)

" ... And the 1999 Na Hoku Winner is ... • Darlene Ahuno for ' Ku 'u Sweetie/Mai Lohilohi Mai 'Oe" Our table went wild. Hula Records and all of us were delighted that Darlene won

another Hoku award . Congratulations to all!

There were lots of awards; some I voted for and some I didn ' t . The nomination ballots are sent about 60 days before the event. The first ballots contain just about every release of the previous year. Voting members are allowed to vote for tive in each category . Then about 30 days before the award ceremonies you receive the FINAL BALLOT. ThiS time there are only five nominees and you get to pick ONE ONLY

in each category.

THE BIG W I NNERS

About two years ago, my wife, He len , and I met a woman on Moloka ' i named Ui Colon . After learning about my radiO Show she asked if she could moil her son 's album as soon as it was finished . She did . The album was PURE HEART. This was a wonderful album that I felt everyone would like , so I began to play it - almost every week Tt"'le three young . talented gentlemen who are PURE HEART are Jon Yamasato, Jake Shimabukuro & lopaka Colon The album took Hawoi·i

AUKAK E/ K EPAKEMAPA 1999

by storm. It was on the Top 10 almost the entire year. As a result. these young men (they are still in school) made four trips to the No Hoku Awards stage. PURE HEART won Island Contemporary Album. Most Promising Artists. Album of the Year and Favorite Entertainers of the Year.

The highlight of everyone's No Hoku evening was watching the emotion on these th ree fresh faces as they stood in front of a sold-out house. Lopaka was excited and animated, Jon had great presence in thanking those who assisted them and Jake was a basket case. Jake is not a guy to hold his emotions in . For him it was a four or five Kleenex event . He tried to speak but his tears of joy would not allow more than a muffled. "Thank You' - needless to say, his family and mine were c rying as well. In a post awards interview. we learned that they just released their second album titled. ·PURE HEART 2" - When you hear it you'll agree with me that it ' s another hit!

My Na Hoku involvement began the week before when I broadcast poolside from The Sheraton Waikiki Hotel with many Hoku hopefuls. I did a second show from The Princess Kaiulani Hotel. My location broadcasts are always jammed with celebrit ies including co-hosts Donny Couch and Moe Keale .

My trip was too short so I've started planning my September Aloha Festivals trip - and of course the 23rd annual Na Hoku Award ceremony in May, 2000. Would you like to go? Just drop me an e-mail and I'll send you details. alohajoe@alohajoe .com.

He tells us that in his early years, he watched his g randmother, m other and aunts dance hula to th is music. Kapono obviously gained a tremendous respect for these compositions. It's one of those albums that plays as an underscore to your li fe. I play it a ll the time. It makes me cry .

Aloha, o ere by Pat & Evi Morita

whenever our travel schedule permit s. Thi s past year we attended the pass ing-on service of a long time dea r perso nal friend, Flip Wilson . Of course, it was altended by many familiar faces not seen in ages, One of the most uplifting ges tures was to see another l o n g~time fri end , Rocky Aoki as he vo lunteered hi s Newport Beach Benihana es tablishmen t to serve the family and fri ends at Flip's last remembrance. I' m sure Flip would permit me to say "Many Mahalos , Rocky."

Moving on to a glorious reunion with another great fri end Red Pope to celebrate his wife Linda's surpri se birthday party in Phoeni x, AZ. To preface a bit , Red was Exec. VP, marketing at First Hawa ii an Ban k, and together wi th his boss, CEO 'Walter Oods, the two co nceptualized the enormously successful "Yes, We Can! " advert iSin g campaign, using me as the centerp iece du ring the time I was still liv ing in Hawai' i in the early '90s. It went on for six years. So it was with great surpri se that during a ve ry short respi te in ou r travel time that we were able to visit with the now re tired Popes to spend a happy ti me with them and their friends fro m everywhere. To our complete joy was the appearance of ano ther longtime fri end , Jimmy Borges! He came especiall y for the occas ion. He an d I prov ided the lars, songs and Alohas for Red , Lin da and eve rybody there. What a great celebratio n! After a full s li mmer of do ing a lot of promotional work for the Di sney hit. "Mulan ," it was a well -ea rned tilll e to si mp ly unwi nd and part y.

We managed to stay fai rl y we ll at homc dur ing Ihe Holi days. and Ev i & I were at lon g ltl ':!> t able to catch-up to 'ohana and fri ends hcrc ill Las Vegas. whole bunch of us still around . God bless us all ! Or as Joe Willi ams would 've said, "Wanna sti ck around ? Just keep breathin ' ." The idea bei ng, if you' re around long enough, wh o knows who you' ll run into who knew you when you still is?

As an example, Ev i and I are fi nally se ttled (we thought for a sha ri spell right aft er the Holi days) . but we suddenl y receive a personal in vitat ion from another ove r-the yea rs buddy, Wyland . You know, d1.1 guy what paints whales and dolphins on sides of entire buildings. Hi s simple request is for me to emcee and participate in an enormous blac k~ ti e fundraiser ce lebrating Earth Year and posthumOll sly awa rding two Sa ints of our oceans habi ta ts, Jacque Cousteau and Lloyd Bridges. Not onl y did we attend and witness acceptances by the respec ti ve family members o f COllsteau and Bridges, but also who should appear on the ente rtai nment bill but Henry Kapono~ Afl er catc hin g- up to eac h other amid st the hoohOD ha-ha hullabal oo of the cvening's hi ghly-succcss ful event ($500.000 was raised fo r ocean environment cil uses), we di scovered that Kapollo was SCI 10 appear at the ncw Ma nd alay Bay's House

o f Bl ues. Naturall y, we had to go ca tc h tum . Happil y we went onl y to

di scove r that Cecilio Rodriguez was joining Kapollo on stage. Gim me a break - I can' t stand dis awreddy'

Well , folks , it 's an understatement to say that C&K not only packed the house (1,600 people - sta nding room only), but they brought the hOllse down with one of the 1110St elec tri fy ing performances ever seen in a tow n Ihat' s seen it all. Together with our good fri ends I'vlcl & Emil.}' Ozeki , publi shers of thi s great magazine ... wow, \V ha" u great night !

But, TRY WAIT. We' re no t quite done ye t. Visi ting with C& K backstage we Illeet up with a young fella who is now currently gigging at the new Bellagio' s Fontana Lounge. I first mel him during my very firs t job in Hawai·i in 1966. He and hi s cohorts would go on from there to form the original nucleus of the Fabulous Echos who woul d later become the

renowned Society of Seven, 5,0.5. ' I' m talking abo ut L ' il Albert - Albert Maligmat . We caught him a day later as he worked and performed as lead singer and guitarist with one of Las Vegas' hottes t groups, Deni se Clemente Band. Their smooth. high-energy sounds are a welcome break in the late afternoon from the clatter and clang of the casino cacophon ies. You gotta catch ' urn when you' re in town. They would love to hear fro m you and talk story. Boy. ta lk about deja vu. L'il Albert pl ay ing alongside young swingin g sounds musicians took me back to when I. too. first worked Honolulu at a lege ndary "Du ke' s" in the o ld Internati onal Market Pl ace on Kalakaua Avenue. It was hi s first job, lOa, havi ng just arrived with Big Bert Sagum and Tony Ruivivar fro m the Ph ilipp ines by way of Hong Kong. Life is such 11 wonderful way to go when you work it ri ght. TAH ITI WAS GREAT, BUT HAWAI'I IS STILL NO I<A 01 ••••••••••••••• MICHAEL W. PERRY

I just got a chance to check out one of Hawajj 's tourism competitors. Now. Tahiti may not be a MAJOR competitor like Cabo San Lucas or Disneyland, but for someone planning to visit an exotic place, and willing to invest big bucks and a fivehour flight to get there. our island sisters to the south are definitely an alternative to Hawai·i. (Check out the travel message boards on AOL for the folks trying to decide between Moui and Tahiti!) Anyway, to spy on the competition yourself, fly due south from HNL to the Tahitian version of HonoluluPapeete. At firsf glance. there is no comparison Papeete is pretty poor, run-down, and much less

tourist-friendly than almost anywhere in our town. But it is part of French Polynesia, and therein lies the charm.

Every South Pacific fantasy .... every daydream about languid sunsets on the beach every subconscious memory of Bloody Mary singing 'Boli Hoi· .... leads right to Tahiti. Or. more accurately, to one of Tohiti 's less-rundown, more picturesque Neighbor Islands: Moorea, Rangiroo, Tetiaroa, or Bora Bora. The names are exotic. The pace there makes Moloka'j seem like a pressure cooker, The women all speak French the world 's sexiest language. Th~ lagoons are stunning, The scenery rivals anything in Hawai'i, and it's too darn expensive to stay there.

The hotel folks in Tahiti do have someth ing we can 't have for any price: overwater bungalows, Thatched huts on stilts w ith luxurious interiors, a few feet above spectacular reefs , Somehow I'm su re the zoning people will never let that happen in the Aloha State. but it is probably the most memorable difference between a vacation in Tahiti. and one in Hawai·i. OK. that and the topless women on the beach. You see, as in Hawai'i, the missionaries zealously covered up the natives, They failed to realize . however. that the French influence would bring female tourists from Europe who get to the beach and promptly take off their tops.

Hawai'i has insidiously crept into Tahiti. I wanted to buy my wife the One Souvenir you need from French Polynesia : black pearls . We bicycled down to Matira Point to an authentically Tahitian boutique named Matira Pearl and Fashion which turned out to be owned by two guys named Steve from Hawa;' i. They definitely have the life , Then. at a steamy tourist bar named Bloody Mary's, I saw a huge sign out front with the names of all the famous people who have eaten there: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Meg Ryan . Phil Donohue, Kapena . Kopena? And at the obligatory Tahitian show at our hotel. there was the firedancer, the Tahitian hula , and the b ig finale number "Aloha O'e" There is a charm. exotic ambiance . and a relaxing good time to be had in Tahiti. but "Aloha O 'e " just made me homesick for the very best destination on earth for tourists o r loca ls ... . How many restaurants in Las Vegas could you walk into, find a table and order. "Bring us saimin .... or laulau .. .. or kalua cabbage" - and the wa iter or waitress understood.

Y OLI probably already know the places on the Strip, Downtown. and in the neighborhoods where that order would be all in a day's work . But you might be surprised to di scover how many chefs, food servers. and res taurant managers everywhere the va lley exude Tile Aloha Spirit.

Some were born and nJised in Hawai' i. others came later in their culinary careers. Some have their own restaurants, :-.omc work in someone elsc's kitchen. Some venues clear. Iy caler 10 Islanders. others are strictly haole.

SALE CAESARS!

After months o f negotiations w ith several of the world 's b iggest casino corpora tions, Starwood Hotels & Resorts sold Caesars World to Park Place Entertainment for 53 b ill ion in cash. Park Place, Hilton's gaming subsidiary and already the world's largest gambling company . is buying the country 's sixth largest and most recognized gambling corporation . Park Place, which already had 17 casinos worldwide, adds to its roster Caesars hote l-casinos in Las Vegas, Atlantic City. Lake Tahoe , Mississippi. and Indiana, plus Caesars-managed casinos in

Delaware, Canada, the Philippines, and South Africa. By buying Caesars, Hilton now owns four out of the five hotel-casinos on the carner of the Strip and Flamingo Road (Caesars. Flamingo. Bally·s.

and Paris).

Starwood also sold the Desert Inn for 5275 million to international casino mogul Sol Kerzner . Sun owns th e ultra-upscale Atlantis on Paradise Island in th e Bahamas, which ope ned last December, and Resorts Hotel·Casino in Atlantic Ci ty , which it bought from Merv Griffin in 1996. It also owns 50 percent and manages the hugely successful Mohegan Sun Hotel -Casino in Connecticut. Sun acquires the Desert Inn, which sits on 25 a c res, the 140-acre golf course. and the 32-acre vacant lot a t the corner o f Sands Ave , and the Strip (where a Planet Hollywood casino w a s planned to be built) . The deal is expected to be approved in the second q uarter, 2000.

"CHICAGO " IN LA S V EGA S

Broadway Theater has come to the Strip II, a big way. C hicago , the Ebb and Kandet m usica l that opened in New York in 1975 to c ritical acclaim

and public indiffe rence, is getting high marks from bath c ri t ics and show-goers in Las Vegas. This show is "A- list· all t he way . The cast (Iivestage legends Chita Rive ra as Roxie Hart and Ben Veree n as Billy Flynn). the choreography, music, script. and pacing ore all first-class.

Chicago" takes place in the jazzvaudeville era of the 1920s and is done mostly in black and white. It involves the true story of a chorus girl, Roxie Hart, who murde rs a lover and g oes to ja il; the bulk of a ct ion takes p lace in the w omen's lock-up. C an the smarmy defense lawyer. Billy Flynn . stir up enough sympathy for Roxie thro ugh various manipulations of the media. the public . and even the jury, to get Roxie acqUitted? The climax is cynical and the mood is dark. but the show is an interesting commentary on a number of timeless issues.

Supporting it all is the new I.lOO-seat theater , which is gorgeous and acoustically tight. if a little tao big. The floor and lower m ezzanine seats are all good , but the upper mezzanine is pretty for away, especially for the price . We recommend shelling out the extra $ 10 or 520 for the bet te r seats . You can buy drinks at the bar in the theater lobby and carry them in; all the seats have cup holders attached . Beer starts at $4 ; mixed drinks average 56 .50 .

Tickets (582 .50 , $71 .50 , or 565 .50 can be o rdered as for in advance as you want from the Mandalay Bay box office o r through Ticketmaster Yo u should book ahead if you want to attend an a weekend , but be c areful. there 's no cancellatio n You buy 'em you own 'em . "Chic ago " plays

Islander Growth Everywhere on "Ninth Island" When ' OHANA (family) ® published its premier issue in 1996, th e tremendous growth in islanders moving to Las Vegas gave us the notion of coining " Ninth Island." Hawai'j which is composed of eight is lands, when combined with many expatriated islanders moving to Las Vegas, made it a "natural " ,

However, the com paratively high Qut m igrat i on from Paradise because of a prolonged economic slump has caused island residents to begin new lives throughout the con tinental U.S. Accordingly, the term Ninth Island now refers to the United States.

BUFFET UPDATE

With everyone flocking to the buffets at Bellagio and Mandalay Bay (Venetian doesn·t have 0 buffet), the good old Mirage Buffet seems a little neglec ted these days. Too bad because it's good with lots of unique elements. For one. dinner begins at 3 pm. one of the few in town to start so early, making it easy to avoid crow ds (get th e re before 5:30). There 's an interesting mix of food. too , Seafood: oysters on the holf, snow c rab legs, peel -and-eat shrimp. assorted smoked fish, and lox , Action area: C hinese , Mexican, and pasta stations Entrees : Much like ot sister-c asino Golden Nugget, the Mirage has fewer than most. but they ore topnotc h . There 's also the good bread pudding for dessert, The Mirage Buffet is an excellent

choice for dinner even at S 13.50 ( lunch is S9.50) ,

The O rleans, a popular locals casino on West Tropicana about a mile from the Strip, has opened a n 0 11 -new version of its French Market Buffet. The new room. located in a section of an ongoing 20,QOO-foot expansion, is an action buffet in the fashion of the Fiesta. Rio, Reserve, etc . There are seven stations, not coun ting salads and dessert s. including seafood , Chinese, and Las Vegas' fourth Mongolian grill. The C ajun o rientation results in a few un ique items - gumbo , crayfish . liver and onions - but truthfully , no bars have been raised here , An excellent value. though. at S8 .95 for dinner every day except Monday. when the seafood buffet is S 13.95 .

'OHANA, with readers in 28 states, is gaining strength as a reg ional magazine, Mel said. Tourists in Vegas are beginning to

buy the magazine for the Vegas information, making the magazine more mainstream . But Hawai ' i and Las Vegas, local fo lks, culture and education are 'OHANA's mai n focus.

The magazine continues to be a vehicle to keep islanders, no matte r where they are, in tune with what is going on in the islands, said Mel, who di stributes aboul 7,000 copies to Hawai ' i. Vegas and parts of Southern California.

Another 3,000 copies are mailed to subscribers worldwide, incl uding 50 mil itary islanders slationed in Europe. Many subscribers learn about the magazine through word of mouth and the magazine's Web page: www.ohanamagazine.com.

"This is a real 'ohana magazine," Mel said. "It is frus trating at times, but it is also rewarding to realize that we do bring joy to thousands and our readers appreciare it. "
