CATECHESIS CORNER Grace: What It Is and What It Does

con nued... According to Scripture, sanc fica on and jus fica on aren’t just one- me events but are ongoing processes in the life of the believer. Both can be spoken of as past events, as Paul men ons in 1 Corinthians 6:11: “But you were washed, you were sanc fied, you were jus fied in the name of the Lord Jesus and in the Spirit of our God.” Sanc fica on is also a present, ongoing process, as the author of Hebrews notes: “For by a single offering he has perfected for all me those who are sanc fied” (Heb. 10:14). In regard to jus fica on also being an ongoing process, compare Romans 4:3 and Genesis 15:6 with Hebrews 11:8, Genesis 12:1–4, James 2:21–23, and Genesis 22:1–18. In these passages, Abraham’s jus fica on is advanced.

Can Jus fica on Be Lost? Most Fundamentalists go on to say that losing ground in the sanc fica on ba le won’t jeopardize your jus fica on. You might sin worse than you did before “ge ng saved,” but you’ll enter heaven anyway, because you can’t undo your jus fica on, which has nothing to do with whether you have supernatural life in your soul. Calvin taught the absolute im-possibility of losing jus fica on. Luther said it could be lost only through the sin of unbelief—that is, by undoing the act of faith and rejec ng Christ—but not by what Catholics call mortal sins. Catholics see it differently. If you sin grievously, then the supernatural life in your soul disappears, since it can’t coexist with serious sin. You then cease to be jus fied. If you were to die while unjus fied, you’d go to hell. But you can become re-jus fied by having the supernatural life re-newed in your soul, and you can do that by responding to the actual graces God sends you.

Ac ng on Actual Graces He sends you an actual grace, say, in the form of a nagging voice that whispers, “You need to repent! Go to confession!” You do, your sins are forgiven, you’re reconciled to God, and you have supernatural life again (cf. John 20:21–23). Or you say to yourself, “Maybe tomor-row,” and that par cular supernatural impulse, that actual grace, pass-es you by. But another is always on the way, God never abandoning us to our own stupidity (cf. 1 Tim. 2:4). Once you have supernatural life—once sanc fying grace is in your soul—you can increase it by every supernaturally good ac on you do: receiving Communion, saying prayers, performing the corporal works of mercy. Is it worth increasing sanc fying grace once you have it? Isn’t the minimum enough? Yes and no. It’s enough to get you into heaven, but it may not be enough to sustain itself. It’s easy to fall from grace, as you know. The more solidly you’re wed to sanc fying grace, the more likely you can withstand tempta ons. And if you do that, you maintain sanc fying grace. In other words, once you achieve the supernatural life, you don’t want to take it easy.

The minimum isn’t good enough because it’s easy to lose the mini-mum. We must con nually seek God’s grace, con nually respond to the actual graces God is working within us, inclining us to turn to him and do good. This is what Paul discusses when he instructs us: “Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salva on with fear and trembling; for God is at work in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure. Do all things without grumbling or ques oning, that you may be blameless and innocent, children of God without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse genera-

on, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I may be proud that I did not run in vain or labor in vain” (Phil. 2:12–16). End of “Grace: what it is and what it does”

Are Catholics born again? Catholics and Protestants agree that to be saved, you have to be born again. Jesus said so: “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3). When a Catholic says that he has been “born again,” he refers to the transforma on that God’s grace accomplished in him during bap-

sm. Evangelical Protestants typically mean something quite different when they talk about being “born again.” For an Evangelical, becoming “born again” o en happens like this: He goes to a crusade or a revival where a minister delivers a sermon telling him of his need to be “born again.” “If you believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and believe he died for your sins, you’ll be born again!” says the preacher. So the gentleman makes “a decision for Christ” and at the altar call goes forward to be led in “the sinner’s prayer” by the minister. Then the minister tells all who prayed the sinner’s prayer that they have been saved—“born again.” But is the minister right? Not according to the Bible.

The Names of the New Birth Regenera on (being “born again”) is the transforma on from death to life that occurs in our souls when we first come to God and are jus -fied. He washes us clean of our sins and gives us a new nature, break-ing the power of sin over us so that we will no longer be its slaves but its enemies who must fight it as part of the Chris an life (cf. Rom. 6:1–22; Eph. 6:11–17). To understand the biblical teaching of being born again, we must understand the terms it uses to refer to this event. The phrase “born again” may not appear in the Bible. The Greek phrase o en translated “born again” (gennēthē anōthen) occurs twice in the Bible—John 3:3 and 3:7—and there is a ques on of how it should be translated. The Greek word anothen some mes can be translated “again,” but in the New Testament, it most o en means “from above.” In the King James Version, the only two mes it is trans-lated “again” are in John 3:3 and 3:7; every other me it is given a different rendering. Another term is regenera on. When referring to something that occurs in the life of an individual believer, it appears in only Titus 3:5. In other passages, the new birth phenomenon is also described as receiving new life (Rom. 6:4), receiving the circumcision of the heart (Rom. 2:29; Col. 2:11–12), and becoming a “new crea on” (2 Cor. 5:17; Gal. 6:15). Gracia: qué es y qué hace con nuado...

De acuerdo con las Escrituras, la san ficación y la jus ficación no son eventos únicos, sino procesos con nuos en la vida del creyente. Actuando sobre las gracias reales Te envía una gracia real, digamos, en forma de una voz molesta que susurra: “¡Necesitas arrepen rte! ¡Vayan a la confesión! ”Sí, sus pe-cados son perdonados, se reconcilian con Dios y vuelven a tener vida sobrenatural (vea Juan 20: 21–23). O te dices a mismo: "Tal vez ma-ñana", y ese impulso sobrenatural par cular, esa gracia real, te pasa. Pero otro siempre está en camino, Dios nunca nos abandona a nuestra propia estupidez (cf. 1 Tim. 2: 4). Una vez que enes vida sobrenatural, una vez que la gracia san fi-cante está en tu alma, puedes aumentarla con cada acción supernatu-ralmente buena que realices: recibir la comunión, rezar, realizar las obras corporales de misericordia. ¿Vale la pena aumentar la gracia san ficadora una vez que la enes? ¿No es lo mínimo? Si y no. Es sufi-ciente para llevarte al cielo, pero puede que no sea suficiente para sostenerse a sí mismo. Es fácil caer en desgracia, como ustedes saben. Cuanto más sólidamente estés casado con la gracia san ficadora, más probabilidades tendrás de resis r las tentaciones. Y si haces eso, man enes la gracia san ficante. Debemos buscar con nuamente la gracia de Dios, respond-er con nuamente a las gracias reales que Dios está trabajando dentro de nosotros, inclinándonos a volvernos a él y hacer el bien. mucho más en mi ausencia, trabaja tu propia salvación con temor y temblor; porque Dios está obrando en , tanto para querer como para trabajar por su buena voluntad. Haga todas las cosas sin quejarse ni cues onar, para que pueda ser inocente e inocente, hijos de Dios sin mancha en medio de una generación torcida y perversa, entre quienes resplandece como luces en el mundo, reteniendo la palabra de vida, para que en el día de Cristo puedo estar orgulloso de no haber corrido en vano ni de trabajar en vano ”(Fil. 2: 12–16). ene que nacer de nuevo. Jesús lo dijo así: “De cierto, de cierto te digo, a menos que uno nazca de nuevo, no puede ver el reino de Di-os” (Juan 3: 3). Cuando un católico dice que ha "nacido de nuevo", se refiere a la transformación que la gracia de Dios logró en él durante el bau smo. Los protestantes evangélicos picamente significan algo muy diferente cuando hablan de "nacer de nuevo". Para un evangélico, llegar a "nacer de nuevo" a menudo sucede así: va a una cruzada o un avivamiento en el que un ministro pronuncia un sermón que le dice que necesita "nacer de nuevo". "Si crees en el Señor Jesucristo y crees que murió por tus pecados, ¡nacerás de nuevo!" Dice el predicador. Sacred Heart Church is the site for the Tradi onal La n Mass in the Monterey Bay Area. This is the Mass at it was celebrated for over a thousand years, it is celebrat-ed in the same way as most of the saints in the Catholic Church experienced it, not to say most of our ancestors. There’s confessions every Sunday prior to this Mass from 9:45-10:15 a.m., and a Sung High La n Mass begins at 10:30 a.m. The La n Mass priest is Fr. Beaugrand. Catholic Homeschool group We are a group of homeschooling families look-ing to nurture our Faith and support of one another through fellowship and regular meet-ups.
