6 . Do you organize cultural excursions and activities? Some study abroad programs advertise host university activities and events as their own. IFSA-Butler staff abroad organize special cultural events and excursions just for IFSA-Butler students. Of course, host university activities are also available to our students and are a bonus to the IFSA-Butler cultural experience.

7 . Are your excursions and activities included in the program fee? IFSA-Butler’s program fees include all of our great excursions and activities. With the exception of a few optional excursions, we never ask students to pay additional money for events.

8 . Do I have to arrange my own housing? IFSA-Butler’s program fees always include housing, and IFSA-Butler guarantees that each student has housing upon arrival abroad.

9 . Do your programs include medical insurance? All IFSA-Butler programs include comprehensive accident and illness insurance at no additional cost.

10. Will I have an on-site orientation? IFSA-Butler won’t leave you out in the cold. Each program begins with an orientation in the host country. Our resident directors and other on-site staff organize and conduct the orientations themselves.

When you’re in the process of choosing a study abroad provider, be sure to ask all the right questions!

1. What is the academic quality of your programs? IFSA-Butler’s affiliated universities are at the top of the rankings in their countries, and some are among the highest ranked universities in the world.

2. Are all your fees listed up front? IFSA-Butler doesn’t have any hidden charges. All of our fees, plus deposits and potential supplemental fees such as meal plan charges, are clearly outlined in our program fee pages on our website.

3. Do you have scholarships? IFSA-Butler has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships over the past five years.

4. Do you have full-time staff in each host country? Some study abroad programs just give busy professors extra money to provide an occasional event or to organize a brief orientation. IFSA-Butler has offices and employs full-time staff in each country where we have programs. Our staff provide everything from thorough orientations to academic guidance to emergency assistance.

5. Will I receive a real university transcript? Every IFSA-Butler student receives two Butler University transcripts, with official grade and credit

he cities of this country reveal European influences and distinctly Argentine passion.

Museums, opera and ballet mix comfortably with the sounds of tango playing in the city squares. Café culture has moved almost intact from Europe into the cities of Argentina, and the country’s many immigrants give those cities an international and sophisticated feel. Even the Argentine accent, with its Italian lilt, reveals the cosmopolitan roots of its citizens.

The geography of Argentina is varied, from the high and arid Andes Mountains to the subtropical rainforests of the lowland north. Incredible glaciers and their penguin inhabitants enchant travelers to the south. The pampas plains in the middle of the country have contributed to the macho culture of the gauchos, the nearly mythic Argentine cowboys. Argentina’s variety of climates offers wonderful possibilities for outdoor exploration.

A L E X A N D R I AEgypt’s second largest city and its largest seaport, Alexandria is a living showcase for Egypt’s glorious history. Until the Arab conquest, the city was home to ancient Greek, Jewish and Armenian communities. Although few descendants of these communities still remain today, the city retains a chic, Mediterranean atmosphere replete with cafés and stunning seaside views. The corniche, which lines the Mediterranean Sea, is the center of both the Alexandria University campus and the city in general. InternshipsThe Alliance’s summer internship or directed research component facilitates community involvement and allows students to explore an individual interest related to development issues. These field-based experiences support focused, sustained inquiry that takes learning outside the classroom while maintaining a rigorous academic structure. Past opportunities have been in business, film and media, religion, global health, education and information technology.

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS• Introduces students to the most dynamic areas of

Indian society, politics, economics and development• Combines a core academic course on contemporary

development issues with specialization through an internship or directed research project

• Classes taught in English exclusively for Alliance students by faculty drawn from across Pune’s many prominent academic institutions, think tanks and NGOs

HOUSINGAll students live with a host family and consistently rate their homestay experience as the single most important aspect of their summer in Pune. As a university town, Pune has many families who are accustomed to renting out rooms to students, and who, in some cases, have semi-independent apartments or rooms attached to their houses. Every effort is made to find placements according to student preference and availability. Breakfast is provided at the program center weekdays and dinner is usually provided in students’ homes. Students are responsible for lunch and there are plenty of inexpensive eateries near the Deccan Gymkhana neighborhood.

Field ExcursionsCourses are offered at one of the U.K.’s top biomedical research centers. Field experiences include a visit to medical microbiology laboratories and practical laboratory work at the facilities of the Centre for Molecular Biosciences within the Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, the top-ranking such facility in the U.K.

Students also have a special day-long workshop that explores the evolution of gene TAS2R38 (which codes for a taste receptor in the tongue) and features practical lab techniques such as DNA isolation, polymerase chain reaction (PCR), restriction enzyme digests and gel electrophoresis. Students also complete a gene evolution workshop at a renowned science education center.

HOUSINGIFSA-Butler arranges housing with a carefully selected host family. The program fee includes three meals per day. IFSA-Butler houses only one student per family for maximum cultural and language integration.

CLINICAL ROTATIONAs part of the Contemporary Issues in Public Health course, students shadow medical professionals in a local clinic. Students will rotate among the clinic’s specialties and write

a journal of their experiences. At the clinic, students will also put into practice their theoretical learning and will learn more about cultural differences in medicine.

InternshipA business and arts internship associated with the Edinburgh Festival is a required component of this program. Internships are available in a wide range of fields related to the arts, including entertainment and production, stage management, public relations, marketing and venue management.

Interns will interview for their placements upon arrival in Edinburgh and will be matched with their employers prior to the start of the festival. Interns will be supervised by a University of Edinburgh faculty member and will also write a 1,750-2,000 word research report related to their internship.

All interns will experience the exciting, fast-paced festival atmosphere and will be able to see shows and productions throughout the festival in August.

• Participants learn the business and management side of the arts during this engaging, hands-on summer program

• Program combines introductory, practical business courses with hands-on arts experience

HOUSINGStudents live in Pollock Halls, a 15-minute walk from campus. Pollock amenities include a computer lab, cafeteria, restaurant, shops and bars. Internet access is available upon request. En-suite accommodation is available, and the program fee includes some meals.

InternshipsThe second session of the Stirling summer program includes a four-week internship option. Placements are available in sports, environmental studies, politics, marketing and charity/nonprofit organizations. The internship replaces one course.

Interns and employers agree on a project that will be of benefit to both. Though the actual work experience is the main component of each internship, students will also receive help and instruction from classroom teaching sessions, review days and online tutorial.

The internship is unpaid but graded and worth 3 U.S. semester credit hours.

Summer Research Seminar The Summer Research Seminar is a unique opportunity for students to design, research and present a substantial piece of work examining the vibrant city of Istanbul. This process is supported by our local network of entrepreneurs, artists, journalists, business leaders and policymakers, as well as our faculty advisors.

The Making of Modern Istanbul

Location: Istanbul, Turkey

SUMMER IN ISTANBUL

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS• Based in a dynamic neighborhood in the European

side of the city, close to Taksim Square and the modern heart of Istanbul

• Classes taught in English exclusively for Alliance students by faculty drawn from Istanbul’s most prominent institutions

• Allows students to select either interdisciplinary coursework or an in-depth directed research project – or combine both for longer term

• Includes a variety of cultural activities and a weekend excursion to introduce students to Turkey’s rich diversity

HOUSINGAlliance students live in student dormitories in centrally-located neighborhoods, a short commute from the program center and just steps from shopping, restaurants, nightlife and public transportation. Students may opt for either Turkish or other international roommates. Students cook for themselves or eat in nearby restaurants.

ELIGIBILIT YIFSA-Butler programs are open to any qualified undergraduate in good standing enrolled full time at an accredited college or university in the United States or Canada. Most of our affiliated universities abroad require that students have completed at least one full year of undergraduate study before the summer begins.

All of our affiliated colleges and universities abroad have rigorous and demanding academic programs and are highly selective in their admissions. Their expectations determine our admissions requirements. See the individual program profiles for GPA, language skills and other academic requirements.

We reserve the right to reject applicants on the basis of academic, disciplinary, conduct and other considerations.

Note that IFSA-Butler does not charge an application fee.

APPLYINGAdmissions to IFSA-Butler programs are conducted on a rolling basis, which means that once your application is complete, we send it to the host university for an admissions decision. Some of our more popular programs fill well before the deadline. Apply early!

How to ApplyIFSA-Butler requires only one application. You may ask to be considered for more than one program on the same application. Download an application or apply online at www.ifsa-butler.org.

A completed program application includes the following:

• A program approval form completed by your study abroad advisor. If your university does not have a study abroad advisor, an official with the authority to approve study abroad (such as a dean or registrar) may complete this form.

• An official transcript from your home college or university (and from any others you have attended) showing credits and grades for all college or university courses you have taken.

• A recommendation form completed by an instructor in your major discipline or the discipline in which you wish to concentrate abroad.

• Spanish language evaluation (programs in Argentina, Chile, Mexico and Peru).

• One 2-inch by 2-inch full-face photo in color. Print your name on the back in case it is separated from your file. Universities abroad require these photos.

Additional materials required:

• University of the Arts London requires a second recommendation and a resume.

• Students wishing to participate in an internship may be required to submit a resume, additional essay or a separate internship application.

The Institute for Study Abroad, Butler University (IFSA-Butler) is a nonprofit organization founded in 1988 at Butler University. Our primary goal is to provide quality study abroad opportunities, plus academic and personal support services, for qualified North American undergraduates seeking to earn academic credit through study abroad. While the Institute for Study Abroad has an affiliation with Butler University for transcripts and other purposes, it is a separate organization.

Study abroad means pairing a great academic experience with the adventure of a lifetime. IFSA-Butler helps prepare you for the unexpected so you can make the most of your time abroad. You may be studying on the other side of the world, but you’ll feel right at home with IFSA-Butler.

6 . Do you organize cultural excursions and activities? Some study abroad programs advertise host university activities and events as their own. IFSA-Butler staff abroad organize special cultural events and excursions just for IFSA-Butler students. Of course, host university activities are also available to our students and are a bonus to the IFSA-Butler cultural experience.

7 . Are your excursions and activities included in the program fee? IFSA-Butler’s program fees include all of our great excursions and activities. With the exception of a few optional excursions, we never ask students to pay additional money for events.

8 . Do I have to arrange my own housing? IFSA-Butler’s program fees always include housing, and IFSA-Butler guarantees that each student has housing upon arrival abroad.

9 . Do your programs include medical insurance? All IFSA-Butler programs include comprehensive accident and illness insurance at no additional cost.

10. Will I have an on-site orientation? IFSA-Butler won’t leave you out in the cold. Each program begins with an orientation in the host country. Our resident directors and other on-site staff organize and conduct the orientations themselves.

When you’re in the process of choosing a study abroad provider, be sure to ask all the right questions!

1. What is the academic quality of your programs? IFSA-Butler’s affiliated universities are at the top of the rankings in their countries, and some are among the highest ranked universities in the world.

2. Are all your fees listed up front? IFSA-Butler doesn’t have any hidden charges. All of our fees, plus deposits and potential supplemental fees such as meal plan charges, are clearly outlined in our program fee pages on our website.

3. Do you have scholarships? IFSA-Butler has awarded millions of dollars in scholarships over the past five years.

4. Do you have full-time staff in each host country? Some study abroad programs just give busy professors extra money to provide an occasional event or to organize a brief orientation. IFSA-Butler has offices and employs full-time staff in each country where we have programs. Our staff provide everything from thorough orientations to academic guidance to emergency assistance.

5. Will I receive a real university transcript? Every IFSA-Butler student receives two Butler University transcripts, with official grade and credit
