Scouting reportField agronomists urge farmers to watch for early season pests

by Gordon WolfIowa State University

Extension field agrono-mists surveyed by the Iowa Farm & Ranch encouraged farmers to keep an eye out for early season pests.

Clarke McGrath, ISU Ex-tension field agronomist in west central Iowa, said farmers should keep an eye on their fields on roughly a weekly basis from planting throughout the growing season to scout for pests.

“Right now we are keep-ing an eye out for early sea-son insect pests like black cutworms in corn and bean leaf beetles in soybeans,” he said. “We haven’t seen much of either.”

He continued that farm-ers should also watch for weed issues so they can get them under control ear-lier rather than later.

“A lot of post emergent herbicides will go on in the next month or so,” McGrath said “Corn will be the focus the next cou-ple weeks, and then we’ll quickly transition to soy-bean spraying.”

Joel DeJong, ISU Exten-sion field agronomist serv-ing northwest Iowa, said farmers should watch for black cutworms on small corn and if over-threshold-levels of plants cut, insec-ticidal treatment might be warranted.

“Stalk borers are be-ginning to migrate out of ditches and field borders into outside rows of corn,” he added.

“Scout for their move-ment, and consider treat-ing outside rows if you don’t have hybrids out there that have resistance

traits for this pest in them. Keep scouting for weeds and treat when still small,” DeJong added.

Paul Kassel, ISU Exten-sion field agronomist sta-tioned in northern Iowa, also encouraged farmers to check for black cutworm and to check soybean stands and populations.

In his June 2 Integrated Agronomics bulletin, Mark Johnson, ISU Extension field agronomist serving portions of northern and central Iowa, said he had noticed waterhemp and other weeds emerging in several fields he has been in.

“It is best to spray for that soon as it is much eas-ier to control while it is not yet four inches tall,” John-son wrote. “Also, the later you spray many herbicides, for instance, Flexstar, the more chance of carryover problems next year.”

He continued that with later soybean planting this year, farmers should keep in mind the 10-month rota-tion interval for next year’s corn.

Johnson also wrote that potential for interactions between post herbicides and soil insecticides exist, and encouraged farmers to check both labels.

“The biggest concern is with Counter insecticide - the same plant enzyme used to metabolize the in-secticide is used to metab-olize some herbicides, in this case ALS herbicides,” he said.

Johnson stated, “Using both pesticides in the same crop year can overload the plant metabolic processes.”

Cheese factory puts on a spread for Dairy Month

Agropur cheese plant in Hull will host its fifth annual Cheese Fest, a June Dairy Month celebration that allows the company to show appreciation and say “thank you” to area dairy producers.

On Thursday, June 12, Agropur will serve grilled cheeseburgers, chips, ice cream and milk to the public under a big white tent from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for a free-will donation to be donated to the Boyden-Hull FFA and local 4-H clubs.

Agropur anticipates that 1,500 will attend this year.Activities will include a small petting zoo; the small

animals will be brought by 4-H members. Children’s

games will be offered, with small prizes awarded.Agropur will give away blocks of cheese throughout

the eventCheese Fest will take place at the Agropur plant in

Hull. Unfortunately, plant tours will not be allowed for food safety reasons.

Agropur as well as Farm Credit Services, Hull Co-op Association, New Tec and the Rental Center sponsor the event with the assistance of other area businesses - American State Bank, Iowa State Bank, Land O Lakes, Sioux County Cattleman’s Association, Sioux County Dairy Promotions and Western Iowa Dairy Alliance.

Speed Tills. The Joker RT Series from Horsch

The unique design of the Joker allows you to accomplish light to aggressive tillage and excellent soil finishing. With depth management from 1"-5" and working widths of 23'-37', the RT Series gives you precise tillage at high speed.

The Joker gives you what vertical tillage can't.

Unlike vertical tillage, the Joker is a true residue management system. That means it perfectly sizes residue and incorporates it into the soil for fast decomposition. The Joker also consolidates the soil and promotes faster warming. This helps manage moisture better and gets you planting faster.

June 3 weather causes problems west central, southwest Iowa

by Gordon WolfRain that fell in May and before the

storms of Tuesday, June 3, provided ben-efit to crops but also washed away some soil.

“We needed the rain,” said Clarke Mc-Grath, ISU Extension field agronomist in west central Iowa, on June 2. “We needed a few inches to replenish the root profile, but when it comes as hard and fast as it did, we have a lot of run-off, so the rain doesn’t soak in.”

The water that ran off the crop land helped to recharge ponds and lakes, pro-viding water resources for cattle produc-ers, but McGrath said erosion also oc-curred, even with the use of minimum till and no-till.

McGrath said a hard rain will cause fields to lose soil, will wash out plants and make ditches in the field.

The situation changed quickly for some farmers in McGrath’s territory on June 3. McGrath told the Iowa Farm and Ranch that hail and heavy rains caused dam-age across a good chunk of western and southwestern Iowa. As of the morning of June 4, he was not yet sure how wide-spread it was.

“There are some farms where the corn and soybeans are ‘gone’,” he said. “As soon as it dries enough, there will be some replant going on, especially to the south of Highway 44, from what I am told.”

Paul Kassel, ISU Extension field agron-omist stationed in northern Iowa, said storms prior to June 3 caused some hail damage and some flooding, plant drown-out and standing water, but added the rains were mostly beneficial. He continued if any plant loss was experienced, it was mostly limited.

Kassel said he was not aware of any damage in his area caused by the June 3 storm.

Joel DeJong, ISU Extension field agrono-mist in northwest Iowa, said prior to June 3, precipitation caused erosion in some areas, but in the north part of his region, the soil was really dry until the weekend of May 31 and June 1.

“Some still received less than one inch of rain and remain well behind normal. But there has been some significant erosion in some neighborhoods - and scattered hail,” said DeJong. “ However, the benefit of precipitation received greatly exceeds the problems for the northwest corner of Iowa.”

He continued in a couple neighborhoods some replanting was needed, but it is not a widespread condition.

Following the June 3 storm, DeJong said in the northern part of his service area no damage was caused but that the area re-ceived some rain.

He added he received 0.2 inch of rain the night of June 3.

Storm wreaks havoc in areas of western Iowa

by stasha PadgettAfter a spring storm made its way across western Iowa

the evening of Tuesday, June 3, some residents reported no damage while others vouch for the remains it left be-hind.

Steve Bergren, an auctioneer and farmer in Cass Coun-ty, reported the June 3 storm was one of the worst cases of soil erosion he’s seen in the area.

“Cornstalks are piled up like snowdrifts,” said Bergren. He added that an open-front machine shed was taken

completely down seven miles north of Stanton. Bergren said “Grant (a city in Montgomery County) is a complete

wipeout,” said Bergren, in reference to the damage caused by the storm.

Rod Riley, Page County emergency management direc-tor, said the storm that came through on June 3 was a “freak deal.” He said Page County residents faced hail ranging from the size of peas to baseballs, which caused broken windows in homes and cars in the south-central and southeast regions.

In Clarinda, 60 mile-per-hour winds took down trees and power lines, leaving 100 homes without power.

“The power companies were right there,” said Rile, and all homes soon had power again.

Due to heavy rain the eastern part of Page County, the Nodaway River crept out of its banks and into farm fields and eventually into the wastewater treatment facility, said

Riley. While some farmers will be dealing with an early-ru-

ined crop others, will be continuing on as planned. Bryce Meeves with Berne Coop reported, “no wind no hail,” for Harrison County.

The Iowa Board of Regents on June 4 approved the for-mation of the Iowa Soybean Research Center at Iowa State University (ISU) in Ames.

The center, a partnership between the Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) and ISU, will take soybean research and disseminating information to a new level and will facilitate collaboration between public and private enti-ties aimed at meeting the needs of Iowa soybean farmers.

Ultimately, the center will enable producers to profit-ably provide the highest yielding, highest quality soy-beans and soybean products to a growing global market in a sustainable way.

Goals of the center are: - Forge strong public-private partnerships- Sustain extension and outreach communication and

collaboration with growers and industry- Increase training of students and other personnel for

soybean-related research, education and production- Increase public and private funding of soybean-relat-

ed research and educationGreg Tylka will serve as center director. He is professor

of plant pathology with extension and research responsi-bilities in management of plant-parasitic nematodes.

ISA officials approached ISU more than a year ago about forming a center, with the goal of increasing soy-bean acres and profitability.

Since Iowa traditionally leads the nation in soybean production (411 million bushels last year, according to government records), Tylka said ISU is the perfect place for the center given the university’s reputation as a leader in soybean research.

The center will be housed in Agronomy Hall on the ISU campus, the hub of soybean research programs and sup-porting faculty and staff.

EPA rumored to forward RFS rule this week

Staff from Senator Chuck Grassley’s office said a date has not been set when the Environ-mental Protection Agency (EPA) will take action on a proposal to lower the renewable volume obli-gation for the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS).

However, Grassley’s staff did say a rumor is the EPA will sent the rule to the Office of Manage-ment and Budget by the end of this week (week of June 1-7).

On November 15, the

EPA proposed to lower the renewable volume obligation from the an-nual target of 14.4 bil-lion gallons to 13 billion gallons.

The proposal prompted backlash from elected of-ficials and farm organi-zations in the Midwest to stop what they said would further decrease the falling corn prices and harm the rural economy.

According to its No-vember 15 announce-ment, the EPA said near-ly all gasoline sold in

the United States is now E10 and that while the production of renewable fuels has been growing rapidly in recent years, “advances in vehicle fuel economy and other economic factors have pushed gasoline con-sumption far lower than what was expected when Congress passed the Re-newable Fuel Standard (RFS) in 2007.”

The EPA reasoned that the United States is at the “E10 blend wall,” the point at which the E10

fuel pool is saturated with ethanol.

The agency said if gasoline demand con-tinues to decline, as is currently forecast, con-tinuing growth in the use of ethanol would require greater use of higher eth-anol blends such as E15 and E85.

A 60-day comment period that followed the EPA’s proposal expired on January 28, which was, coincidentally, the date for the eighth annu-al Iowa Renewable Fuels

Summit and Trade Show in Altoona.

Grassley continued his opposition to the lowered standard.

In an email to the Iowa Farm and Ranch this week he said, “I disagree with reducing the renew-able fuel standard. The EPA proposal would hurt the development of clean, renewable, domestic en-ergy.

“It’s disappointing to consider that President Obama, who campaigned in Iowa on his support for

biofuels, would allow his EPA to undermine this successful policy.”

According to the Iowa Renewable Fuels As-sociation, Iowa is the leader in renewable fuels production with 42 etha-nol refineries capable of producing more than 3.8 billion gallons annually, three cellulosic ethanol facilities currently under construction and 12 bio-diesel facilities with the capacity to produce near-ly 315 million gallons an-nually.

Damage from hail, rain and winds widespread in Nebraska, southwest Iowa

by Jay Withrow and Nancy Gaarder, World-herald News service

The most rain the Omaha metro area has recorded on a single June day caused widespread flooding in northeast Omaha and Council Bluffs.

Woodhouse dealerships in Blair, Nebraska, and Mis-souri Valley sustained hail damage to $162 million in inventory.

The 5.3 inches of rain recorded at Eppley Airfield in Omaha ranks fifth highest among single-day rainfalls since record-keeping began in 1871, said Dave Pearson, meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

Tornadoes, while feared initially, appeared not to have caused significant problems, even though more than a half-dozen were reported across the region. Wednesday morning, the National Weather Service was sending sur-vey crews to Missouri Valley and Oakland to see whether damage in those communities was tornado related.

For the most part, hail, straight-line winds and flood-ing rains were the problem. Near Newport, Nebraska, 100-mile-per-hour straight-line winds toppled grain bins, a semitrailer and caused other damage. Also in the region, empty coal cars were toppled.

In Blair, residents had begun cleaning up Wednesday

after taking a pounding from baseball-sized hail. Rod Storm, Blair city administrator, said he hadn’t

toured the whole town of about 8,000. But he estimated that 95 percent or more of structures suffered some dam-age - some not so much, but others requiring complete siding and roofing replacement, as well as windows on the north and west.

While there weren’t major injuries, Blair was the com-munity where the most people appear to have been hurt by hail. A number of people were hurt seeking refuge in a store after hail broke open the windows in their cars. A couple of people were treated for minor injuries.

Pork Checkoff announces new common industry audit platform

After more than a year of industry collaboration, the National Pork Board on June 4 shared plans for a new common industry audit platform for pork producers, packers and processors.

The program will use the existing Pork Quality As-surance Plus (PQA Plus) program as its foundation and expand on it to serve as a common audit platform for the pork industry.

The overarching goal of the common audit process is to provide consumers greater assurance of the care taken by farmers and pork processors to improve animal care and food safety.

The concept of a common audit was first introduced more than one year ago at the 2013 National Pork In-dustry Forum.

The resolution emerging from that conference directed the National Pork Board to convene a coalition of pack-ers and pork producers to explore a credible and afford-able solution for assuring animal well-being.

“As an industry, we know that our consumers are demanding a higher level of integrity from the pork in-dustry’s quality assurance processes and procedures,” said Chris Novak, chief executive officer of the National Pork Board.

“We are encouraged by the broad support we have received from all our industry’s partners to develop the framework for this process.”

In 2011, the Pork Checkoff’s Board of Directors met with European counterparts who complained about audit programs in their countries that were duplicative, costly and inefficient.

Utilizing that experience, the common platform an-nounced today seeks to create and standardize a com-

mon process that will:• Meetindividualcompanyandcustomerneeds• Focusonoutcome-basedcriteriathatmeasureanimal

welfare• Provideclaritytoproducerswithregardtoauditstan-

dards and expectations• Minimizeduplicationandpreventover-sampling• Ensuregreaterintegrityoftheauditprocessthrough

consistent applicationThe new common audit framework has several key

components, including a new audit tool, requirements for auditor training and biosecurity and a platform that will allow audit results to be shared to prevent duplica-tive audits.

The audit tool is currently being beta-tested on farms across the country. The Industry Audit Task Force will review the results of this test in early July before final-izing the audit.

“What’s exciting about this common audit framework is that it has truly been the industry coming together to better serve the needs of farmers, customers and con-sumers,” Novak said.

“This is not a new Pork Checkoff program, but rather an initiative that will be led by producers and packers working together to enhance animal care. We’re grateful to the packers who have been members of this task force for their leadership with this effort.”

The Industry Audit Task Force includes producers and veterinarians representing the American Association of Swine Veterinarians, as well as packer representatives from Cargill, Farmland/Smithfield, Hatfield, Hormel, JBS, Seaboard, Triumph and Tyson.

“As packers, we operate between our suppliers - the

pork producers - and our customers - those who are sell-ing pork to consumers,” said Chris Hodges, chairman of the Packer Processer Industry Council and senior vice president of fresh pork at Smithfield-Farmland.

“The eye of the public is on where their food comes from and how it is raised. Meeting the demands of our customers while still appreciating the challenges of our producers is tough. That’s why this new common audit platform is needed now.”

Hodges added that the National Pork Board cannot fully deploy the standards of the program without the di-rect involvement of packers and processors. Many pack-ers have agreed to support the new common industry audit, which will mean that they will utilize the common audit standard when conducting third-party audits.

“This approach has never been more critical,” said Emily Erickson, a member of the Industry Audit Task Force and a pig farmer from Jackson, Minnesota

“As pork producers, we know that we must do more to reassure consumers about our commitment to improv-ing animal care. At the same time, we need a clear and consistent approach that can ensure that we’re doing the right thing every day for our animals, our farmers and our customers. This new framework delivers on that promise.”

Incoming National Pork Board President Dale Norton agreed. “As a pork producer, I am excited about this new, innovative direction,” he said.

“This common audit platform will set a clear vision that challenges the status quo and meets domestic and international consumer needs. It’s the right tool at the right time to ensure that we provide high-quality pork from well-cared-for pigs.”

A dairy field tripOpen house promotes western Iowa’s healthy dairy industry

by Gordon WolfFor the past six years

in June, the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance (WIDA) and the Midwest Dairy Asso-ciation have been encour-aging individuals to return to their agricultural roots by visiting a western Iowa dairy farm during Dairy Month.

This year’s seventh an-nual open house will take place at the Plymouth Dairy Farms south of Le Mars from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, June 26.

LeAnne Philips, WIDA executive director, said the open houses have proved successful in promoting dairy and teaching visitors about dairy farm opera-tions.

“We’ve had anywhere from 1,200 to 1,500 peo-ple attend the events in the past,” said Philips. “More and more people are more generations removed from the farm, and the open houses allow them to see where their dairy products come from.”

She added that many visitors to the open houses have questions on how dairy cows are cared for, and the annual events allow them to get that in-formation.

The June Dairy Month open houses began as a way for WIDA and the Midwest Dairy Associa-tion to pool local resources and open up a dairy farm to local communities and anyone who wishes to learn more about dairy farming.

Dairy farming is an im-portant industry to the state. It is the fifth larg-

est agricultural business in Iowa and generates $4 billion a year in economic activity from farming to dairy processing, accord-ing to the WIDA. Iowa is home to about 1,400 dairy farms. Approximately 98 percent of the state’s farms are family-owned.

Western Iowa is a strong area for the state’s dairy industry. Philips points to a good demand for milk from area processors such as Wells Dairy in LeMars, the Agropur cheese factory in Hull and the Associated Milk Producers Inc. plant in Sanborn. She added that the dairy industry in west-ern Iowa is supported by a good network of industry service providers.

The location for the open houses rotates to various dairies in western Iowa from year to year. This year’s open house marks a return visit to Plymouth Dairy; the farm hosted the 2010 open house.

Information from WIDA said Plymouth Dairy Farms was founded by the Feuer-helm family in the spring of 2000. The first cows were milked on August 25,

How to get to Plymouth Dairy Farms

Plymouth Dairy Farms, at 23505 K-49, is located four miles south of LeMars on K-49 or five miles east of Merrill on C-44, then travel south on K-49. Parking is available at the farm.

2000. The dairy herd con-sists of about 2,850 cows, which are milked three times a day at the state-of-the-art farm.

Plymouth Dairy Farms uses a Westfalia/Surge double 40 parallel par-lor. Each cow in the herd produces about 90 to 92 pounds of milk per day

The cows rest and eat in

free-stall barns that each hold 800 head. They rest in sand-bedded free-stalls, and fans and sprinklers provide cooling.

During the dairy farm tour, visitors will be able to see where the cows are milked and where they are housed and fed. They will also learn about the role of milk and dairy products in

a healthy diet.A free meal of cheese-

burgers or hot dogs will follow the tours. Blue Bunny ice cream treats will be provided by Wells and milk will be provided by Dean Foods.

An expanded kids’ games and activities area is part of the open house. Kids can enjoy a petting

zoo, and obstacle course and games and will receive a lot of great information about milk and dairy prod-ucts.

Mariah Schmitt, Iowa State Dairy Princess, and the Sioux County dairy princess, will be at the open house and will invite kids to make their own crowns to be royalty for a day.

Iowa food blogger: Dairy’s versatility makes for unlimited options

When “Iowa Girl Eats” Kristin Porter thinks dairy, the influential blogger knows that milk is just the tip of the iceberg.

There’s yogurt. And sour cream. And cheese. And dips. In fact, the ver-satility of dairy combined with its exceptional quality and health benefits makes it the perfect food and bev-erage for all occasions and people on the go and of all ages.

Dairy is also the perfect food to celebrate in June as Porter continues her journey into agriculture in partnership with the Iowa Food & Family Project and Midwest Dairy Associa-tion.

“I’ve always loved cook-ing with dairy products, whether it’s cheeses for sauces or milk for soups,” Porter said. “One of my favorite destinations last year was visiting the Iowa State University dairy farm. I met the young peo-ple running that operation, caring for the cows and working to produce milk.

“It’s been fun to take that knowledge to the next

level as I dig into dairy and its nutritious benefits and fun foodie connections,” she continued. “It makes me look at milk in a whole new light.”

Join My Journey is an award-winning campaign led by the Iowa Food & Family Project (www.io-wafoodandfamily.com/journey). Whether you’re just joining the trip or you’ve been a regular travel companion, Iowa Girl Eats Kristin Porter is ready to share her lat-est experience with Iowa farming and food during June Dairy Month.

Join My Journey involves dedicated farmers, agricul-tural partners and retailers and provides a fun and in-formative way for people to discover how their food is grown and to meet the people who grow, prepare and serve it. Porter’s jour-ney began in April and has included stops at Jethro’s BBQ & Pork Chop Grill in Johnston celebrating pork and Latham Seeds in Al-exander where the focus was on soybeans and soy-foods.

In June, all road signs point to dairy and for good reason. Iowa ranks 12th nationally in milk produc-tion and is home to more than 1,400 dairy herds. Combined, they provide approximately 535 million gallons of milk annually.

According to the Mid-west Dairy Association, the average cow provides about seven gallons of milk daily and, with 14

dairy processing plants lo-cated in the state, it takes just 48 hours for milk to travel from the farm to the dairy case.

During her journey into dairy, Porter visited the Hy-Vee dairy case where she learned about cheese including how to make mozzarella and break a cheese wheel. She also traveled to one of Iowa’s most recognized dairy pro-

cessors, made well-known by the company’s bovine mascots Annie and Eric who stand guard at An-derson Erickson.

From milk delivery to yogurt-carton filling to the famous cottage cheese room, Porter learned more about how Iowa’s dairy farmers contribute to a va-riety of products she eats and cooks with daily.

“Iowa’s dairy industry

is strong because of valu-able partnerships with individuals like Kristin Porter and the Iowa Food & Family Project. We all come together to share the story of our dairy farmers commitment to producing a wholesome product for consumers,” said Chris Freland, manager - indus-try relations for Midwest Dairy.

The Iowa Food & Family Project sponsors innova-tive and engaging activi-ties providing Iowans with the real scoop on food from the people who best know it and grow it — Iowa farm families.

Partners in the journey include DuPont Pioneer, Farm Credit Services of America, Key Cooperative, Iowa Beef Industry Coun-cil, Iowa Corn Promotion Board, Iowa Egg Council, Iowa Pork Producers As-sociation, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Turkey Federation, Latham Hi-Tech Seeds, Machine Shed Restaurant, Midwest Dairy Association, The Soyfoods Council, Subway and Unit-ed Soybean Board.

Case IH, unlike its competitors, defines accuracy as uniform spacing, uniform depth, uniform soil-to-seed contact, uniform emergence and unequaled product quality. That translates into planting more acres per day and higher net effective crop stands. No wonder more and more farmers are switching to the Early Riser Planter because that’s the kind of accuracy that can be taken to the bank.

Field day to focus on strip-till and cover crops

Iowa Learning Farms will host a “Strip-till and Cover Crops for Nutrient Manage-ment” field day on Tuesday, June 17, at the farm of Mark Thompson near Badger from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Topics include the use of strip-tillage and cover crops as conservation farming techniques, and how these methods re-duce water impairment and pollution.

The event is free and open to the public, and dinner will be provided.

Host farmer Mark Thompson will share his experiences in using strip-till and cover crops and will offer advice on how to effectively strip-till and manage cover crops. Natural Resources Conservation Service State Agronomist Barb Stewart will provide information on how strip-tillage can be an effective tool for residue management and in reducing the amount of nutrients and sediment entering wa-terways. The Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy urges farmers to adopt practices that lessen the amount of nitrogen and phosphorus going into Iowa’s rivers and streams.

The Conservation Station also will be on display. The Conservation Station fea-tures a rainfall simulator that shows the effects that different surfaces from agri-

cultural and urban environments have on the displacement of rain water.

Those who plan to attend should con-tact the Webster County NRCS office by calling 515-573-2150, extension 3, by June 10. The event site is located at 2585 120th Street near Badger. Travel one-third of a mile east from Badger on County Road C56.

For more information about Iowa Learning Farms, visit the website: http://www.extension.iastate.edu/ilf/.

Established in 2004, Iowa Learning Farms is building a Culture of Conserva-tion, encouraging adoption of conserva-tion practices. Farmers, researchers and ILF team members are working together to identify and implement the best manage-ment practices that improve water quality and soil health while remaining profit-able. Partners of Iowa Learning Farms are the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, Iowa Natural Resources Conservation Service and Iowa Department of Natural Resources (USEPA section 319), Conservation Districts of Iowa, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Water Cen-ter and Practical Farmers of Iowa.

History of Dairy Monthin JuneOriginal theme was “Keep Youthful - Drink Milk”

June Dairy Month, an annual tradition developed to celebrate the dairy industry and its many contributions to society, originated in 1937.

During its first two years, 1937 and 1938, it was called National Milk Month and ran from June 10 to July 10. The 1937 event, sponsored by chain stores, was given the theme “Keep Youthful - Drink Milk.”

Originally supported by the National Dairy Council (NDC), June Dairy Month was established to help sta-bilize dairy demand during periods of peak production when cows were turned out to pasture. To assist in that effort, NDC provided promotional materials to the 6,300 stores participating.

“June Dairy Month” became the official title of the promotion in 1939 and focused on greater use of dairy products.

Campaign material, prepared by NDC, was offered to producers, processors and dairy product distributors. June Dairy Month was initially funded by a one cent per pound butterfat assessment in June.

During the war years, less emphasis was placed on promotion, more on surviving the war. The retailers helped customers receive an adequate supply of dairy products and provided information to help use them properly.

After the war, efforts focused on resuming dairy product usage and regaining “lost” butter sales. In 1947 the slogan was “30 Days for ADA in June.” The goal was “Sales, not Surplus.” By 1950, retailers, pro-ducers and processors all worked together to promote June Dairy Month.

In 1955 American Dairy Association (ADA) became the national leader for June Dairy Month campaigns. The emphasis changed to sales promotion programs for dairy products, and advertising and merchandis-ing programs were added to an already-effective public relations program.

The June promotion became a month-by-month mer-chandising event in which one or more foods made from milk were highlighted nationwide on a monthly basis. This advertising was visible evidence of dairy farmers’ dollars at work.

June Dairy Month continued to evolve over the years and entire communities across the country, both rural and urban, have embraced it and have become involved in many ways.

On-farm events such as breakfasts and open houses are popular in June, with dairy farmers throwing open their doors so that people can learn more about how they take care of cows and produce the milk that people depend on for good health.

Some celebrate with product samples at creameries, grocery stores and local banks and businesses. Some dairy princess coronations happen in June, and it would not be unusual to come across a cow milking contest, cow visits at zoos, or a running event honoring June and using chocolate milk as a refuel beverage.

I think the majority of kids in farm families are at-tached to 4-H and FFA pro-grams in school.

Last year was the little kid’s first year in 4-H, but my big kid has been in 4-H for awhile and in FFA for the last couple years too.

We’ve been around the block with cattle quite a few times at this point. They’ve both done a lot of non-live-stock projects in 4-H, rang-ing from home improve-ment to cooking to clothing to health to photography. But what they really enjoy are the communications events.

The boys are also get-ting ready to go to junior nationals, where they can participate in other events besides showing cattle. One of them is speeches. The lit-tle kid has three choices of speech topics, all of which are pretty easy.

w Explain what a pedigree is and why it is impor-tant.

w What are your favorite parts of showing cattle and why?

w What is your favorite cut of meat to eat and why?I’m not certain which one

he will choose, but I would guess that it will probably be his favorite cut of meat. He does love his steak!

The big kid can choose from three topics as well, but they are a bit more com-plex.w How are programs such

as Future Farmers of America (FFA), 4-H and National Junior Heifer Shows vital to the growth and sustenance of the beef industry?

w What are the positives and negatives of utilizing EPDs?

w What are your thoughts on food companies, such

as Chipolte, targeting farming methods to mar-ket their company?I think he might go with

the first one, though for me, the last one is interesting, but I’ll stay off my soapbox today.

In speaking about the first topic, I would prob-ably fall horribly short of time because for me it’s so simple: get kids involved in agriculture and livestock when they are younger so they will appreciate it more as they grow older.

Agriculture is much more than feeding the world. It’s about service as well.

This year I was honored to be able to judge the state FFA Ag Communications competition, where chap-ters were asked to create a media plan for a community service project. Every one of the chapters I came across had fantastic ideas for ser-

vice projects that they were either starting or continu-ing.

One in particular stands out. The Sioux Center FFA Chapter has been sending

groups of students to Haiti to build Safe T Homes, metal grain bin houses made by Sukup. It’s such an awesome project, because the kids not only have the opportunity to help out by building these homes, but also to spend some time with the people of Haiti. They also help with agri-cultural practices, and in a local school.

They were hoping to have one of the Safe T Homes set up at the State Fair this year, so I can’t wait to visit them and see how their project is progressing.

I know I say this often, but getting kids involved in agriculture is what will help our way of life to continue.

If you have time, volun-teer for one of these great programs to keep the next generation interested in ag-riculture so we can continue to feed the world.

On the farm, you have to wear lots of hats — and operate lots of machines. So when you have ideas on improving ours, we listen. Take our E-Series Skid Steers. You wanted easier attachment hookup. Improved reach and height for easier loading and unloading on mid-frame models. Optional switchable controls for choosing between ISO, H-pattern, and foot controls. And an auto-reversing fan that keeps coolers free of debris. We gathered them all into these material masters. To learn more, see your dealer or visit our website.

Western Iowa students awarded Iowa State Dairy Association scholarships

A number of students from western Iowa were award-ed $500 college scholarships by the Iowa State Dairy Association (ISDA).

Western Iowa recipients are:Courtney Behrens, daughter of Keith and Deneise

Behrens, of Meriden. She is a sophomore at Iowa State University where she is studying animal science/pre-vet. She was awarded a WIDA Scholarship, funded by the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance.

Stephanie Pausma, daughter of Richard and Elaine Pausma, of Melvin. She is a freshman at Dordt College where she is studying biomedical engineering. She was awarded a WIDA Scholarship, funded by the Western Iowa Dairy Alliance.

Alison Sandbulte, daughter of Shawn and Jami Sand-

bulte, of Rock Valley. Next fall she will begin her fresh-man year at the University of Northern Iowa where she plans to study biology. She was awarded a CPDX Schol-arship funded by the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

Sarah Schelling, daughter of Matthew and Cheryl Schelling, of Orange City. Next fall she will begin her first year at Le Mars Beauty College where she will study cosmetology.

Megan Van’t Hul, daughter of Mark and Deb Van’t Hul, of Rock Valley. She is a sophomore at Dordt College where she is studying nursing. She was awarded a CPDX Scholarship funded by the Central Plains Dairy Expo.

“ISDA is excited to award these scholarships,” said Larry Shover, president of the Iowa State Dairy Associa-tion. “It’s always fun to review the applications and see

so much potential in the students. The applicants amaze us year after year.”

In all, 14 students received $500 scholarships for the 2014 fall semester to help with tuition costs, room and board, textbooks or other education-related expenses. Recipients were recognized at the Dairy Iowa meeting on June 4 at the Heartland Acres Agribition Center in Independence.

Scholarship applicants are the child, grandchild, em-ployee or child of an employee of a current ISDA mem-ber.

Applicants were evaluated on their participation in school and extracurricular activities and on an essay specifying future plans and how life on a dairy farm has influenced him/her.

USDA announces programs to conserve sensitive land and help beginning farmers

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on June 4 an-nounced that farmers, ranchers and landowners com-mitted to protecting and conserving environmentally sensitive land may now sign up for the Conservation Reserve Program (CRP).

The Secretary also announced that retiring farmers enrolled in CRP could receive incentives to transfer a portion of their land to beginning, disadvantaged or vet-eran farmers through the Transition Incentives Program (TIP).

“CRP is one of the largest voluntary conservation programs in the country,” said Vilsack. “This initiative helps farmers and ranchers lead the nation in prevent-ing soil erosion, improving water quality and restoring wildlife habitat, all of which will make a difference for future generations.”

Vilsack continued, “The average age of farmers and ranchers in the United States is 58 years, and twice as many are 65 or older compared to those 45 or younger. The cost of buying land is one of the biggest barriers to many interested in getting started in agriculture. The Transition Incentives Program is very useful as we work to help new farmers and ranchers get started.”

The Conservation Reserve Program provides incen-tives to producers who utilize conservation methods on environmentally-sensitive lands. For example, farmers

are monetarily compensated for establishing long-term vegetative species, such as approved grasses or trees (known as “covers”) to control soil erosion, improve water quality, and enhance wildlife habitat.

CRP consists of a “continuous” and “general” sign-up period. Continuous sign up for the voluntary program starts June 9. Under continuous sign-up authority, eli-gible land can be enrolled in CRP at any time with con-tracts of up to 10 to 15 years in duration.

In lieu of a general sign-up this year, USDA will allow producers with general CRP contracts expiring this Sep-tember to have the option of a one-year contract exten-sion. USDA will also implement the 2014 Farm Bill’s requirement that producers enrolled through general sign-up for more than five years can exercise the option to opt-out of the program if certain other conditions are met. In addition, the new grassland provisions, which will allow producers to graze their enrolled land, will enable producers to do so with more flexibility.

The Transition Incentives Program provides two ad-ditional years of payments for retired farmers and ranch-ers who transition expiring CRP acres to socially disad-vantaged, military veteran, or beginning producers who return the land to sustainable grazing or crop produc-tion. Sign up will also begin June 9. TIP funding was increased by more than 30 percent in the 2014 Farm Bill,

providing up to $33 million through 2018.As part of the 2014 Farm Bill, participants meeting

specific qualifications may have the opportunity to ter-minate their CRP contract during fiscal year 2015 if the contract has been in effect for a minimum of five years and if other conditions are also met.

The USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA), which admin-isters CRP, will coordinate the various CRP program op-portunities. For more information on CRP and other FSA programs, visit a local FSA county office or go online to www.fsa.usda.gov.

Both the CRP and TIP were reauthorized by the 2014 Farm Bill. The Farm Bill builds on historic economic gains in rural America over the past five years, while achieving meaningful reform and billions of dollars in savings for taxpayers. Since enactment, USDA has made significant progress to implement each provision of this critical legislation, including providing disaster relief to farmers and ranchers; strengthening risk management tools; expanding access to rural credit; funding critical research; establishing innovative public-private conser-vation partnerships; developing new markets for rural-made products; and investing in infrastructure, housing and community facilities to help improve quality of life in rural America. JuneQuilters can make a mystery quilt this year. Each month, readers will find directions

to make the block of the month. Each unfinished block will measure 12½” (or 12” when finished). Please refer to the January, 2014 and May, 2014 issues for equip-ment, fabric, and thread suggestions to finish this quilt. For this month’s block you will need three contrasting colors (unless you are using scraps). A is a light fabric, B is a medium, and C is a dark.

Cutting instructionsFabric A: Cut one 7½” square. Cut diagonally twice. Cut four 2”x7½” strips.Fabric B: Cut two 6” squares. Cut diagonally once.Fabric C: Cut one 7½” square. Cut diagonally twice.

Piecing Instructions1. Use one triangle each from Fabrics A and C. Lay right sides

together sew a scant ¼” along one of the shorter edges. Open and press towards the dark to make a triangle. Repeat this 3 more times. The finished triangle is pictured at right.

2. Use one triangle from Fabric B and a strip from Fabric A. Lay right sides together and sew a scant ¼” so triangle opens at pictured at right. Trim the excess fabric from the A strip to make another triangle. Repeat this 3 more times. The finished triangle is pictured at right.

3. Take one of each of the above triangles and lay right sides together. Sew a scant ¼” along the long edge. Repeat this 3 more times, then trim each to make four 6½” squares as pictured at right. NOTE: You must make sure each of the four blocks is trimmed to a 6½” square before assembling your block.

Assemble your block.12. Layout according to diagram, keeping the colors in their

correct positions.13. Sew the square into rows and the rows into the final

block, which should measure 12½” unfinished.14. Now, store this block (and fabric) until the July Iowa

Farm and Ranch arrives with the next one!
