Be Filled With the

FOR A FE\\' ~rrXuTES. I want yOu to consider one of the outstanding commands in God's \\'ord-"Be filled with the Spirit." Ephesians 5:1,s. This is a much neglected message. yet one that is all-important to en:r)' helieving child of God. Charlc., G. pillTley once stated: "It dishonors Christ and weakens the church when helievers ;"Ire not filled \\'ith the Spirit."

There arc three important reasons why Christians should he haptized and filled with the 1 To1y Spirit: ( 1) They need it. (2) It is a plain, positiv(, command frOI11 their Father and they must obey. (3) It is God's provision.

The need is summed I1p in the one word "power." Christians need power for two thIngs: for Christian h\"ing. and for Christian service.

Power for Christian Living

It is one thing to he born agailJ by the Holy Spirit. It is f]lIitc another thing to be kept by the power of God, the Holy Spirit. To be born reql1irc~ only a mOlllent of time, To he kept lw the power of God reql1ires the remainder of one's lire, God has pro"jded for both in ,he suhstitn[ionan' WOrk of the Lord Jesus, li enee thc'Spirit-fille(\ life is the normal Chri"lian life, and the per~OJl who is not filled with and controlled bv the Spirit is not living and C;}I1110t Ih;c the real Chri stian life sl1ch as God demands and expects,

The Bapti~l1l. or filling" with tht' Spirit. is by no means identical with re generatioll . the latter being a preparatory step to the former. That the apostles (eleven of tlwm at least) wcre horn again before that Day of Pen tecost upon which they were filled with the Spirit. is evident from the following" considerations:

The address in the 1'r(\\'('r which Jesl1s. on two separate occa~ioll~. suggt'sted as a model. is "Our Father." Thi~ implies a new birth and a new f:tmih-. There are twO fathers, two fal11ilie~, and twO births, and the only way to get into God's family is by the ne\\', second birth which is regeneration. Since rege1\eration also includes clean~ing. and since the cleven were taught to call God "Father," were enrolled in he~l\'en, and

Again. we might say that it is hard to be saved because spiritual transformation is a great mystery. H ow can a man whose life is filled with sinful practices and dire indulg-cnces and wickedness, suddenly be changed. transformed into a creature tha t loves God and worships God. so that his lips bring forth praises instead of profani ty, and his heart desires rig-htcollsness instead of iniquity?
