ifm safety light curtains forfinger protection provide a multiple beam array ofinfrared light in front of ahazardous area. If any of the beams are blocked by an object, or a finger, in the sensing field, the lightcurtain sends a signal to the machine to place it in a safe state.

Designed for equipmentsuch as pick-and-placemachines, small hydraulicpresses and assemblyautomation machines, ifm’s light curtains for finger protection offer a protected area height from 160 to 1510 mm.

Industry: Assembly automation SMT (Surface Mount Technology)machine

SMT machines, or pick-and-placemachines, are used to rapidly andprecisely place electrical componentsonto printed circuit boards. Carton erecting machines can becomejammed during the erecting process.When this occurs, an operator mustaccess the machine to clear the jam.Once the operator breaks the protectivearea of the safety light curtain, themachine stops to allow the operator to clear the jam. Safety light curtains for bodyprotection prevent access to a machine by using lightcurtains and optional mirrorsto define a hazardous area.The multiple beam array ofinfrared light is positionedto prevent unsafe access to a dangerous area.

Protected area heightsinclude 500 mm, 800 mm,and 900 mm. Safety lightcurtains are available withtwo beams, three beams and four beams models.

Muting applications allowthe safety function of thelight curtain to be temporar-ily bypassed. Typical applica-tions allow material beingproduced to pass throughthe safety light curtain whiledenying operators access tounsafe areas.

A palletizer erects a pallet of kegs andplaces it on a conveyor. Muting sensorsare tripped and the pallet is allowed tobypass the light curtain and leave thearea. If an operator attempts to enterthe palletizing area from the oppositedirection, the light curtain will detecthis presence and cut power to themachine. Muting is accomplished with ifm safety light curtains by usingthem in conjunction with the G2001Ssafety relay.

Industry: SolarPerimeter guarding of robotic areawith corner mirrors

ifm safety light curtains for bodyprotection are commonly used fordefining a safe outside perimeter thatsurrounds a machine or robot. ifm’slight curtains are widely spaced todetect the position of a larger objectsuch as a person. If an operator pene-trates the perimeter and enters theunsafe area, the motion of the machineor robot will immediately halt. Theoperator must exit the unsafe area andpress a restart button to restore powerto the equipment.

Corner mirrors allow a single pair of safetylight curtains to be used in perimeterguarding applications. Up to three cornermirrors may be used to "bend" the lightinto shapes that protect multiple sides ofthe dangerous area. Each mirror used willdecrease the range of the safety lightcurtain by 15%. Blanking allows one, two orthree consecutive beams to bebroken without interruptingthe safety circuit. These types of light curtains are generallyused for material feed or exitapplications.

ifm’s blanking light curtains canbe used in two different modes:floating blanking and perma-nent blanking.

The floating blanking modeallows beam(s) to be randomlybroken within the protectivearea of the light curtain.

The permanent blanking modeallows an object to be perma-nently in the protective area of a light curtain withoutdisrupting the safety circuit.

Steel plates are conveyed down to thestamping press for stamping. Thebottom of the beams can be triggeredwithout interrupting the safety circuit.However, if an operator tries to reachinto the press, the machine will stopimmediately preventing injury.

A metal sheet roll is fed into the cuttingstation. Because of the movement andvarious feed angles, the metal sheetcan break different beams within theprotected area of the light curtain. Afloating blanking light curtain allows forone, two or three beams to be brokenanywhere within the protected area ofthe light curtain.
