The iF product design award covers all areas of product design. It serves as a platform for design-relevant innovations, thus recognizing today’s globally networked world and its related dynamics.Since 1953, the iF product design award has been recognized as a label for excellent design.

A continuous dialogue with manufacturers and designers forms the basis for furthering its reputa-tion as a trend indicator for outstanding achieve-ments in design and in design innovation. Theawards ceremony for the iF gold awards, which honors the 50 best competition entries, takes placeannually on the opening day of CeBIT.

The iF product design award yearbook documentsall award winners of each competition and providesan exciting insight into the world of successful de-sign. Furthermore, as a reference book, it reflectscurrent trends in outstanding design.

Manufacturers and designers are invited to register their entriesin one of the 16 categories of the iF product design award 2011by 30 September 2010. The jury, consisting of internationally renowned experts, will choose the best submissions during a two-day jury session. Award winners will receive the famous iF label.50 of these award winners will be chosen and honored with thesought-after iF gold award for particularly outstanding achieve-ments in design.

The awards ceremony and the announcement of the 50 goldaward winners traditionally takes place on the opening day ofCeBIT at the Hanover exhibition Centre: for the 2011 awards ceremony this will be 1 March 2011. Products that receive an iF award stand out from the competition due to their excellentquality.

Participation

As "seal of good design" known the world over, the iF productdesign award honors outstanding achievements in design and of-fers an important platform to have your product's design qualityprofessionally validated by an international jury of experts. Ma-nufacturers and designers of mass produced products that havenot been on the market for longer than three years or that haveentered production in the awards year are eligible to compete foran iF product design award 2011.

In order to reflect the variety of the submissions, iF divides the iF product design award into 16 categories.

Requirements for the entries All submissions must be original products. In exceptional cases(e.g. very large exhibits, preproduction prototypes, etc) models,scale models or large format photographs (60 x 90 cm, board-mounted) may be submitted.

You can find the online registration form for thiscompetition in my iF.

In the "product information" text fields of the regi-stration form, we need a short description of yourcontribution, its functionality and design in bothGerman and English (max. 650 characters perlanguage, including punctuation). The jury will usethis short description as a basis for their decision.

If you receive an award, we will offer you to use thisdescription again for the presentation of your pro-duct in the iF product design award yearbook 2011and in the iF online exhibition. This description mustbe provided in both languages (German and Eng-lish).

Use the registration form to upload 2 photos foreach competition entry in the following format:

Image size: max. 300 x 300 pixelsLarger images (max. 2 MB) will automatically be sca-led downColor format: RGBFile format: JPEG (.jpg)

The images are a necessary part of the registration.Please have these images ready and available beforeyou open the registration form.

In order to provide the same conditions of partici-pation for everyone, each participant in the iF pro-duct design award can submit two photos only. Onlyin the case of complex products or systems, may anexception be granted. If this applies to you, pleasesend an email to the iF team that is responsible forthe iF product design award. iF reserves the right tohave the final decision on this matter.

Registration

After we have received your registration including two photos of yourproduct ...

1. We will send you an email confirming that we have received your regi-stration and photos. This email will also contain an entry-ID for your entry.

The entry-ID is composed of the competition-ID and a five-digit number thatidentifies your entry and allocates it to your personal data. It is very impor-tant that you use this entry-ID for all communication, shipping, product- andpackaging labels since we will otherwise not be able to identify the entry.

2. You will receive an invoice for the participation fees. This is payable viabank transfer (see bank details). Unfortunately, we cannot accept cash- orcredit card payments.

Please note that the invoice address cannot be changed once it has been re-gistered.

An international expert jury has been commissionedby iF and will discuss and evaluate all submitted entries in a dedicated, critical and constructive way.The selection process for the iF product designaward is not public, and takes place over two days.During this process, it will become clear which products from which companies and designers meetthe evaluation criteria for outstanding excellence indesign.

Each jury member can only participate in two con-secutive juries. If a jury member is directly connec-ted to one of the submitted entries, they are nolonger allowed to vote. The decision of the jury is legally binding, also as regards the pre-selection results. Legal recourse is excluded.

Submission of entriesAfter the entries have passed the preselection theywill be invited to the jury. The competition entriesneed to be send either via mail or via a forwardingcompany. This must be free of charge for iF. The entries must arrive between 1 and 22 October 2010at our logistic partners Kühne + Nagel (see deliveryaddress).

Multiple entries can be sent as one consignment toKuehne + Nagel. All competition entries, as well asall product- and transport packaging, must beclearly labeled with entry-ID and category number.Additionally, all entries must be shipped in reusablepackaging.

Handling and Logistics

Costs of DeliveryDelivery must be completely free of any charges or fees for iF. Please ensurethat you have paid all necessary customs and / or tax fees when your entryarrives at Kuehne + Nagel. Any fees for import and export have to be paidby you.

Self assembly: setting up your product yourselfProducts that have to be mounted, that are extremely large, difficult to han-dle or very heavy as well as products with delicate parts can be registered forself-assembly. You can do this in your participation area 'my iF', 'my currententries'.

The decision as to whether a contribution can be set up by yourself orwhether it will be set up by iF rests with iF. Small products such as cell phonesor navigation devices cannot be set up by participants.

If you set up your product yourself, all necessary material and tools must beprovided by you. Resources such as forklifts and ramps have to be providedby you or can be rented via iF's logistics partner Kuehne + Nagel. Please inform your forwarding company if this applies to you, since any additionalcosts concerning delivery and collection will be charged to you. If you decideto set up your contribution yourself, you are also responsible for the disposal of any packaging material. If you set up your contribution yourself,you are automatically responsible for dismantling and collecting your con-tribution after it has been evaluated by the jury. This also applies to prod-ucts that have received an award.

After the jury sessionProducts winning an awardProducts that have received an iF product designaward 2011 will be stored for the iF exhibition. TheiF exhibition at the Hanover exhibition center startson 1 March 2011 and ends in August 2011.

Self-disassembling of award-winning productsAward-winning products that have been assembledby participants must also be disassembled by theparticipants on the stated days. If the products arenot collected, they will be stored at a cost to the par-ticipant. In January participants will receive a specialcommunication concerning the self-assembly daysfor the exhibition. Temporary storage at Kuehne +Nagel is also possible. The storage costs have to bepaid by the participants. Please note that Kuehne +Nagel as well as iF cannot be held accountable forany potential damage that may occur during stor-age. If you want to store your product, please con-tact Kuehne + Nagel.

Products not winning an awardProducts not winning an award will be packed by iFafter the jury and sent to Kuehne + Nagel for returnat the participant’s own expense.

From the beginning of December, participants canenter their data for the return of their products byusing the 'shipping information' button in my iF / myentries. Once the returns information has been suc-cessfully submitted, products are available for returnat the end of January 2011. Products picked up fromKuehne + Nagel using a participant’s own forward-ing company will be ready for collection from mid-December onwards.

Handling and Logistics

Self-disassembly of products not winning an awardProducts assembled by the participants, and whichhave not received an award, must also be disassem-bled by the participants on the stated days. If theproducts are not collected, they will be stored at acost to the participant.

Service for award winners I

The iF product design award and the award win-ners of an iF gold awardAll successful contributions to iF competitions willreceive the iF logo, and are entitled to use this logofor commercial purposes. An iF award not only sig-nifies outstanding achievements in design, but alsoensures that the award winners will receive pointsin the iF ranking.

The 50 best contributions to the iF product designaward will additionally receive the iF gold awardand the sought-after iF sculpture, designed in 1996by Herbert Schultes.

Awards ceremony The award winners of the iF gold award will be an-nounced at the awards ceremony. The presentationof these special prizes takes place in a dedicated cer-emony each year on the opening day of CeBIT.

iF product design award yearbookThe iF product design award yearbook, a compre-hensive and attractive document, is a constant andimportant part of the competition. All award-win-ning contributions to the iF product design awardwill be published, including two images, informa-tion on the designer and a description in English andGerman. This excellent publication serves as a refer-ence tool the world over and is therefore a great ad-vertising instrument for each participant. Eachaward winner will receive a copy of the iF productdesign award yearbook 2011. The official publica-tion date is the date of the awards ceremony atCeBIT in Hanover. The publication of all award-win-ning contributions in the iF product design awardyearbook is obligatory for all award winners.

iF product design award exhibitionAll award-winning entries will be presented in the iF product design award exhibition. This exhibitionis open to the public every year from March to August at the Hanover exhibition center. Participa-tion in the exhibition is obligatory for all winners ofan iF product design award.

iF online exhibition With some 3.5 million page hits per month, the iFwebsite is one of the most popular design platformson the Internet. Visitors from over 100 countriescome to find information about the iF competitions.All award-winning contributions will be representedwith up to two images and a description in Germanand English. This exhibition is not limited in dura-tion.

iF rankingAll award winners of the iF competitions will receivepoints in the iF ranking. 20 points are given for win-ning an iF award. For gold award winners, 100points will be given to both the designers in the iF creative ranking and the manufacturers or clientsin the iF company ranking. The basis for the iF rank-ing is formed by all iF competitions run over the lastthree years. The iF ranking is updated after eachnew awards ceremony.
