1. Summary

IETE SFIT organized an industrial visit to Pepsico Industrial Beverages

Manufacturing Plant in Mahul. The aim of the I.V. was to give the engineering

students an insight about the industrial assembly process of manufacturing and the

operation of a large scale production assembly working.

2. Introduction Pepsico Mahul plant has a total spread of 12.08 Acres of area. It has one of the

highest operation rate and can produce 600-1999 packed bottles as of 2010. Its

operation ranges from processing of raw materials to beverage product. Its quality

testing and the production of packaging bottles.

3. Main content

The production assembly consist of a GRP line pipe filling system. Empty

bottles from recycling centers are brought here and undergo a thorough

cleaning process wherein the bottles are cleaned 6 times to ensure proper

hygienic product.

This process is termed under CIP (Continuous Improvement Process). The

bottling from raw plastic grains is carried out by blowing hot air in test tube

like structures. This is carried out under a pressure of 32 bar and in proper

mould to ensure accurate bottle shape and quality. These bottles are carried

by a conveyor belt through the filling process and x ray of bottles are taken

for quality testing.

Page 6: IETE-SFIT 2015-16

The filling process is classified under Hot fill line (used for beverages like

Slice) where the hot product is filled at high temperature (90 degree celsius)

which is less labour intensive. In this section all the work is conducted by

machines.

The products are tested for quality control every half hour.

The Aquafina section consist of the bottling plant and also water extraction

and purification assembly. Here the purity of water is hardness tested,

alkalinity tested, ph tested, TDS metered, turbidity testing. A CDS pipeline

blow moulding technique is implemented here.

The packaging area consists of electronic devices which packs the products

according to the beverage and labels it.

The plant imports the labels and caps from vendors and packs the bottles

with them. The bottle caps and sealed with heat to make the bottle air tight.

The Pepsico plant accounts for exports to 4 plants to the northern regions

and also 4 in the southern regions of India.

Apart from industrial manufacturing Pepsico has carried humanitarian work

by helping 4 HIV affected families in Kolkata.

4. Learning Outcomes

The students were introduced to the production engineering, the scale of

manufacturing which takes place in the industries.

5. Conclusion:

Through this Industrial Visit to Pepsico Plant the students were given the

experience of industrial activities, the knowledge of various machines used, the

management of labour, also how to store the product after its manufacturing. The

act of Pepsico of helping HIV affected families and spreading the awareness

regarding the same has enlightened us that along with the business, production and

supply we also have some responsibility towards the society.
