1. Things to do before leaving

AsyoureachtheendofyourIESEGstudentexperience,therearemanypracticalissuestothinkabout.ThisDepartureGuideintendstohelpyouthroughthisdifficultperiodandtoprepareyouforreturningtoyourhomeculture.

a. Bank Account

Takeanappointmentwithyourbankadvisorinordertocancelyouraccount.

Givethemyourbankdetailsinyourcountry.TheycansendyoutheamountleftinyouraccounttwomonthslatersothatyoucanpayEDFandreceivethelastmonthoftheCAF.

CheckifyouwerereimbursedbyFrenchSocialSecurity(ifyouarenotfromEuropeanUnionandyouwenttothedoctor).

DonotcloseyourFrenchbankaccountbeforeyouleaveasyouwillneedittogetyourdeposit/CAF/socialsecurityreimbursementsback.Youshouldwaitforatleast2monthsbeforeyoucloseit.Pleasecheckwithyourbankadvisorabouttheprocedure.

• CallEDFtostopyourcontract(seeprocedurepage8)

• Leavetheaccommodationinacleanandorderlystate,otherwisethelandlordormanagerwilltakemoneyfromyourdeposit.

• Pleasedonotforgettotakeanappointmentwiththeownerofyourapartmentorthemanagerofyourresidenceforthe“étatdeslieux”andhandinyourkeys.Youneedtodoitinordertoleavetheapartment.

•MakesurethateverythingisEXTRAclean(ground,walls,shower,toilets,cooktop,microwave,fridge…).Ifyoudonotdoit,theresidencewillmakeyoupayforthecleaning.youcanusethelistfortheEstudinesResidencestoknowwhatyouneedtoclean.

•1monthbeforeyouleave,theresidencewillgiveyou(inyourmailbox)adocumentwhichexplainsthedifferentstepsbeforeyourdeparture.

•Duringthesameweekyoureceivethedocument,youhavetogotothereceptionwiththisdocumenttoplanthe“étatdeslieux”(inventoryoffixtures)withthemanager.

• Ifneeded,youmayhavetopaysomeremainingfees15daysbeforeyouleave.

•YouwillhavetocallEDF(seepage6)tostopyourcontractonthedayyouleave.

•ForJardinsdesSciencesandFlandres,amodem(fortheInternet)mayhavebeenlenttoyouduringyourstay.Youwillneedtogiveitbackingoodconditionstogetyourdepositback.

•Youwillhavetogiveyourkeysbackonthedayofyourdeparture.Thenumberofkeysyougivebackhastobethesamethatwasgiventoyouonthedayyouarrived(orwrittenonyourinventory).

•YouwillhavetogiveaRIB(Frenchbankaccountdetails)totheresidencesotheycangiveyoubackyourdepositwithin2monthsafteryourdeparture.

b. Accommodation

• PleasepayALLyourbills(electricity,rent,Internet)beforeleaving.

• Thedeposityoupaidatthebeginningofyourstaycannotbeusedasamonth’srent.Thedepositisusuallygivenbackwithinthenext2months(itdependsonthelandlord/residence.Pleasecheckwithyourlandlord/residencebeforeleaving).

• Anyunwantedkitchenwareorbeddingcanbedonatedtofutureexchangestudentsortocharity.

•1monthbeforeyouleave,youwillhavetosendaregisteredletterwithrecordeddelivery(seetheletterbelow)tothisaddress:42avenueGeorgeV75008Paris.youneedtoputacopyinthemailboxofyourresidence(PasteurorArtois).JoinacopyofyourRIB(Frenchbankaccountdetails).

•3weeksbeforeyourdeparture,pleasemakeanappointmentwiththemanagerofyourresidenceforapre-inventoryoffixtures.

•Contactthemanageroftheresidenceafewdaysbeforetomakeanappointmenttogiveyourkeysback.Appointmentscanbetakenfrom8amto7:30pmduringweekdays.NOappointmentonSaturdays,Sundaysandpublicholidaywillbetaken.

• MakesurethateverythingisEXTRAclean(ground,walls,shower,toilets,cooktop,microwave,fridge…).Ifyoudonotdoit,theresidencewillmakeyoupayforthecleaning.Hereareafewrecommendationsfromtheresidence(incaseyouhaveanyquestions,pleasecontactthemanager).

•Donotwashwalls,butcleanthemwithabrushoradrysponge.Iftheyarestilldirty,theresidencewillmakeyoupayforthepaint.

•Cleanthegroundwithsoap.Donotforgettomovethefridgetocleanbehindit.

•Removegreasefromthestove,donotforgettheexhaustairgrilleabovethewindows.

•Descaletoilets,shower,andsink(useaproductsuchasAntikal,youcanbuyitatCarrefour).

•Cleanwindows(insideandoutside).

•Cleaninthewashingmachine:curtains(onlysoap)andshowercurtain(soapwithbleach).

•Covers,pillows,sofacoverandundersheethavetobedry-cleanedatthedrycleaner.Youwillbeaskedforthebillwhenyoubringyourkeysback.Ifyoucannotprovideforabill,youhavetopayforthedry-cleaning.

• Ifthereareanyustensilsmissing,youhavetoreplacethem.

•Bulbs,cooktop,bulbinthefridgemustbeingoodcondition.

• Incasethesearemissingornotworkingyouwillhavetoreplacethem:shower,trashcan,showercurtain,toilets,toiletsbrush.

2. Reverse Culture Shock

BeforeyoucametoFrance,youprobablyexpectednewwaysofdoingthings,differentkindsoffood,anewlanguage,adifferentweather,etc.Youknewthatyouwouldhavetoadjusttothosenewchanges.

Butareyouawarethatyoumightbefeelingallthosethingsagainonceyougobackhome?

Theremaybeaperiodofadjustmentwhenyoureturntoyourhomecountry,indeed.Althoughyoumaythinkthatitwillbeeasytogobacktofamiliarrelationshipsandhabits,youmayhavesomedifficultysettlingbackin.Thisiscalledreversecultureshock.

Forexample,youmightfeelrejectedbecauseyourfamilyorfriendsmaynotbethatinterestedinhearingallyourstoriesaboutyourstudyabroadexperience.Oryoumightfeellostbecauseofrecentchangesintheeconomicorpoliticalareasofyourcountry.Youmayfindthatitalsotakestimebeforethecustomsandideasthatwereoncesofamiliartoyouinyoureverydaylifeseemnormalagain(forexample,thewaypeoplecook,driveordress;administrativeprocedures;timemanagement;etc).

Thiscanbemadeeasierbyknowingaboutreversecultureshock:understandingthatyoumightexperienceit,andacceptingthatitisacommonandverynormalreaction.

Belowyouwillfindalistofthingsyoucandotohelpyoureadjust:

• Stay in contact with people from your home country

• Take addresses of friends and others with whom you want to stay in contact after you leave France

• Begin to visualize your return early: packing, saying goodbye, being at the airport, reunion with friends/family

• Discuss your experiences with students who have already returned home
