Spring semester went to the long field trip to Okinawa from May 22nd to 25th this year. The highlight of the trip this year is the Eisa (Okinawan dance) workshop by the Eisa club at Meio University. Although we have a short time for the workshop, thanks to the hard work of the club members, the students were able to learn a song to dance! We also had the Sanshin (Okinawan guitar) workshop at Onnason village communi- ty center. The itinerary were filled with other visits such as the shurijo castle or the Churau- mi aquarium as well. IES Abroad Tokyo Center chose the destinations and plans the field trips to help the students to see other sides of Japan, different from what they normally see in their daily life. Spring semester goes to Okinawa not only because it’s far geographically, but also it has totally different culture from the main island of Japan as well as food and lan- guage. Also understanding the history of Okinawa is very important while the stu- dents study abroad in Japan. The students this semester tried all the new things they face and enjoyed the Okinawan culture fully during the program. After the Eisa Dance Workshop at Meio University (名桜大学エイサー部の皆さんと一緒に)

5月22日から25日の3泊4日で、春学期恒例

の沖縄修学旅行に行ってきました。

今回は毎回お世話になっている恩納村コミュ

ニティーセンターでの三線教室や、首里城や美

ら海水族館の見学に加え、新しく名桜大学エイ

サーサークルの皆さんによる、エイサー教室も

体験しました。部員の皆さんが熱心に教えてく

れたので、短い時間であっという間に習得する

ことが出来ました!

最後はみんなでカチャーシーを踊り、名桜大

学の学生さんとの交流を楽しみました。とても

短い時間だったので、帰りのバスはみんなとて

も名残惜しそうでしたが。沖縄での素敵な思い

出の一つになりました。

IESの修学旅行は、学生に普段とは違う環境

で、違う視点から日本を見てもらおう目的地の

選定、日程の計画をしています。

Spring semester went to the long field

trip to Okinawa from May 22nd to 25th this

year.

The highlight of the trip this year is the

Eisa (Okinawan dance) workshop by the Eisa

club at Meio University. Although we have a

short time for the workshop, thanks to the

hard work of the club members, the students

were able to learn a song to dance!

We also had the Sanshin (Okinawan

guitar) workshop at Onnason village communi-

ty center. The itinerary were filled with other

My last stop before leaving Okinawa was Kokusai Street. It’s a

mile long street with a ton of different shops and お土産

(Souvenirs). I picked up some last minute gifts for my friends and family back home, which this place was not short in supply of. There was the Ryukyu glasses everywhere, as well as the Shisha figurines too, this is the Okinawa Kun. It resembles a lion and it always comes in a pair with an open and closed mouth, the open mouth lets in good spirits, while the closed mouth blocks evil. It was great last minute stop before leaving Okinawa and great place to get really good deals on souvenirs. We shopped around for about and 2 hours and went into various shops before heading to lunch. We had a de-lecious lunch, it was a Teppanyaki style restaurant (like Be-nihana’s) called Sam’s Sailor Inn and is famous, and they put on a great show. All in all I had a great time in Okinawa, and despite the

not so great weather, I had a blast.

I haven’t played the guitar since I was in elemen-tary, and playing the Sanshin brought back a lot of those memory. After about 15 minutes or so, muscle memory kicked in and I was playing Do Re Me Fa So La. After about 30 mins I was playing my first song, it was only 2 different

melodies. It was really cool though, cause we were reading the music

in Japanese.

It was great cul-tural experience and I we got to learn a little bit

more about Okinawa.

Sanshin literally means three strings and is often related to a banjo, it consists of a snakeskin-covered body, neck and three strings. Originally a product of China from the old Ryukyu King-dom, it came to Japan in the 16th century, and spread across Japan. It’s

a large part of Okinawan culture and their love of music.

The student council organized several

events during the semester to help the group

to learn and have better understanding of Jap-

anese culture.

The council members of the spring se-

mester has been great on providing the several

opportunities for the students to touch unique

part of Japanese culture. One of the event for

the semester is the Sumo.

The group met in Ryogoku in the morning

to get the day ticket because the council mem-

bers know how to enjoy cheap! Then, the group

went to Asakusa to check out the Sanja Festi-

val which was held on that weekend. There

were so many locals and tourist for the festi-

val!

After some walks and delicious lunch in

Asakusa, the group went back to Ryogoku to

watch the sumo matches. The later matches

are much more entertaining as the matches

increase in experience as the day progresses

for sumo so the group was there at the right

time. The stadium was packed with people

watching the matches and was very exciting!

Everyone had a great day seeing the

sumo matches for the first time and even get

to explore Asakusa during the famous Sanja

festival!

5月30日に到着した夏学期プログラムの43名の学生たちは、東京に滞

在しながら、日本語の勉強、観光にと毎日楽しく生活を送っています。

短期のプログラムですが、学期と同じくらい盛りだくさんでいろいろな

体験をし、日本語と日本文化を勉強します。

ここでは日本語クラスの授業の様子と日光旅行の様子をご紹介します。

先日日本語のプログラムの一環として、神田にある神田外語学院の学生さんと一緒に日本料理を作りました。

写真は日本語300のクラスの学生さんたちの料理教室の様子です。3グループに分かれてお好み焼き、たこ焼き、クリーム白玉を作りました。初めての日

本料理でしたが、どのグループもとても上手にできました。この日は同世代の日本人の友達もできて、日米の友達とのコミュニケーションなどの違いにつ

いても盛り上がりました。

Nikko is just a few hours away from Tokyo and it is a great area to visit.

Not to mention the Toshogu Shrine, UNESCO World Heritage, there are

also the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, the Ryuokyo Ravine and more beau-

tiful nature.

The students visited the site as an over night field trip and spent some-

time explore the area. Also, they experienced hot springs and the Nik-

ko wood curving which is the special technique followed in Nikko with

the unique knife, hikkaki.

Both Spring and Summer programs went to

Kamakura for their field trip. It is one of the

very hot spots to visit in this season. Be-

cause Kamakura is famous with the beauti-

ful hydrangeas in the rainy seasons, there

were so many tourists enjoying temples and

shrines hopping.

The pictures are from the day the Spring semester students visit-

ed the sites. We were very lucky and had a such a nice weather on

that day!

We started from Engakuji temple and had a free time for lunch in

Tsurugaoka Hachimangu and the area. There are so many little shops

with souvenirs and street food, but the best ones were definitely the

ice cream shops! There were matcha, Beniimo and mango flavors be-

sides the basic flavors like vanilla and chocolate. Some of us went

back to the shops to try different

flavors!

And then, the group headed

to see the Great Budda, Daibutsu.

The Daibutsu was so big and it’s

still not the biggest in Japan! The

last visit for the day was Hasedera

temple and the students enjoyed

the beautiful view of the Yuigaha-

ma beach from the top of the hill.

The E-pals also joined the

event and the students had a won-

derful sunny day in Kamakura with

the friends.
