G R E G S T A N D E V E N IES PHILADELPHIA ‘DESIGN WITH LIGHT’ COMPETITION: ‘CIRCADIAN DESIGN’ SECOND PRIZE WINNER CO-DESIGNED WITH ERIC KONOPKA, FALL 2014 ENTRY LOBBY INTERIOR [7AM] ENTRY LOBBY INTERIOR [1PM] ENTRY LOBBY INTERIOR [9PM] POD PERSPECTIVE POD LAYOUT PROPOSAL CUSTOM LIGHT FIXTURE DESIGN CUSTOM LIGHT FIXTURE DESIGN THE PROPOSED DESIGN IS FOCUSED AROUND THE PERSONAL RESPONSE TO NATURAL LIGHTING. WHEN LOOKING AT DAYLIGHTING CONDITIONS, WE DEVELOPED TWO SOLUTIONS THAT ARE TAILORED DIFFERENTLY TO THE LOBBY AND THE LOUNGE ‘PODS,’ ALLOWING FOR SEPARATE RESPONS- ES TO THE INHABITANT’S CIRCADIAN RHYTHM. THE LOBBY UTILIZES A PANELED LED DESIGN THAT HAS A DIRECT CONNECTION TO THE OUTSIDE LIGHT, ADJUSTING THE OVERALL AMBIANCE AND LIGHT INTENSITY TO THE LOBBY FLOOR. THE GOAL OF THE ARRATED PANEL DESIGN WAS TO PROVIDE A NATURAL LIGHTING TRANSITION FOR THOSE WHO HAVE MADE THE HOSPITAL A COMMON-PLACE IN THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LIVES. THE SUBTLE RE-CREATION OF NATURAL LIGHT ALLOWS FOR A CALMING ENVIRONMENT. THE INTERIOR PANEL ARRAY USES WARMING MATERIALS IN ADDITION TO HIGH-END LIGHTING TECHONOLOGY TO PROVIDE A BALANCE OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT. THE LOUNGE PODS BRING THE LIGHTING SCHEME OF THE LOBBY IN TO A PERSONAL, CONTROLLABLE EXPERIENCE. IN MOST HOSPITALS, PATIENTS, VISITORS AND HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS DO NOT HAVE THE LUXURY OF KEEPING A NORMAL SCHEDULE, ESSENTIALLY MAKING A HEALTHY CIRCADIAN RHYTHM IMPOSSIBLE. THE LOUNGE POD IS AN INTERACTIVE CAPSULE THAT ALLOWS THE INHABITANT TO BECOME FULLY IMMERSED IN ‘PERSONALIZED LIGHT THERAPY.’ WHATEVER TYPE OF LIGHT A PERSON NEEDS, WARM TO COOL, BRIGHT TO DIM, DAWN TO DUSK, THE SWOOPING SHAPE OF THE POD WRAPS THEM IN LIGHT PROVIDED BY STATE-OF-THE-ART MULTI-COLORED LEDS AND THE SOFT GLOW OF OLED RIBBONS.
