DOMESTIC SOCKET OUTLET
• Loads are connected to individual final circuits inside a DB.
• Each of the final circuits will deliver power to lighting circuits, motor circuits and socket outlet circuits.
• Plug and socket outlets are used to connect our daily loads to the final loads.

SOCKET OUTLET
• Important Points a) All socket outlets in one room must be connected with
the same phase. b) If it is not possible to do so, then the socket outlets must
be grouped together within the same phase. c) The minimum distance between socket outlets from
different phase should be 2 m. d) In order to avoid the socket outlets from being damaged
by cleaning machines, etc., the recommended minimum mounting height is 150 mm above working area.
e) Socket outlets in kitchen area must be covered with lid cover to avoid the sockets from being exposed to splash water.

TESTING OF SOCKET OUTLET
• To ensure that the equipment is up to its relevant standard.
• To ensure the equipment is not damaged and accidents due to faulty equipment can be avoided.
![Page 38: Iem 1101 Ch2 (Socket Outlet_edit)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042717/563db8d9550346aa9a978878/html5/thumbnails/38.jpg)

TESTING OF SOCKET OUTLET
• Electrical tests - live test and dead test.
• Live test – On energized equipment/connected to the supply
– Involved in circuit ratings and parameters(e.g current, voltage and power)
• Dead test – Before the equipment connected to the supply
– Checks for the integrity of the circuit( e.g continuity test)
![Page 39: Iem 1101 Ch2 (Socket Outlet_edit)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042717/563db8d9550346aa9a978878/html5/thumbnails/39.jpg)

RADIAL CIRCUIT CONTINUITY TEST
• Turn off the main supply • Identify the circuit breaker or fuse for the socket
outlet circuit. • Connect the outgoing live conductor with a
temporary link using a small cable to the neutral terminal block inside the installation’s DB.
• Connect one of the test probes to the live terminal of the tested socket, and the other to the neutral terminal of the socket.
• Repeat the tests for neutral-earth terminals and live-earth terminals.

RING CIRCUIT CONTINUITY TEST
Method 1 • Turn off the main supply. • Identify the circuit breaker or fuse for the socket
outlet circuit. • Disconnect and separate the live conductors for
the socket outlet circuit. • Using the appropriate tester, test the continuity
between the two conductors. • Repeat the test for neutral and earth conductors
for the socket outlet circuit.

RING CIRCUIT CONTINUITY TEST
Method 2 • Turn off the main supply. • Identify the circuit breaker or fuse for the socket outlet
circuit. • Disconnect and separate the live and neutral conductors for
the socket outlet circuit. • Cross connect the conductors. • Using the appropriate tester, test the continuity between
the live and neutral phase at each socket outlets. • Repeat the test for other conductors for the socket outlet
circuit.

POLARITY TEST
• Live test
• To verify the connections of the conductor connected to the equipment.
• For socket outlet - to ensure the terminals are connected to the correct conductors to avoid accidents.
• Using a socket outlet tester, or a voltmeter,
![Page 50: Iem 1101 Ch2 (Socket Outlet_edit)](https://reader034.fdocuments.net/reader034/viewer/2022042717/563db8d9550346aa9a978878/html5/thumbnails/50.jpg)

POLARITY TEST – SOCKET OUTLET TESTER
• Ensure the power is supplied to the socket outlet circuits.
• Connect the socket outlet tester to the socket.
• Turn on the switch of the socket outlet (for switched socket outlets).
• Record the observation indicated by the socket outlet tester.
• Repeat for other socket outlets.

POLARITY TEST – VOLTMETER
• Ensure the power is supplied to the socket outlet circuits.
• Set the voltmeter to AC voltage range
• Connect the probes to the live and neutral terminals of the socket outlet. The voltage reading should be around 230 V ~ 240 V.
• Connect the probes to the live and earth terminals of the socket outlet. The voltage reading should be around 230 V ~ 240 V.
• Connect the probes to the earth and neutral terminals of the socket outlet. The voltage reading should be around 0 V.
