    IELTS Speaking: Basic Information

    The IELTS Speaking Test is the final part of the exam. Your test will be at some time

    between 1.30pm and .00pm. You !an take onl" "our I# do!ument into the exam

    room.

    The test lasts between 11 and 1$ minutes. You will be inter%iewed b" an examiner

    who will re!ord "our !on%ersation. Timing is stri!tl" !ontrolled b" the examiner& so

    don't be surprised if he or she interrupts "ou during an answer.

    There are 3 parts to the Speaking Test(

    1. Introdu!tion) inter%iew( around 10 *uestions in $ to minutes.

    +. Short presentation( talk for + minutes with 1 minute to prepare.

    3. #is!ussion( around *uestions in $ to minutes.

    1. How well do you know your next-door neighbours? 

    I know m" neighbours *uite well. The"'re reall" ni!e people& and I alwa"s stop to talk

    whene%er I see them. I think it's important to get on well with the people who li%e

    next door.

    2. How often do you see them? 

    I see m" neighbours at least a few times a week. -e usuall" see ea!h other when

    we're lea%ing for work in the morning or !oming home in the e%ening.

    3. h!t "roblems do "eo"le sometimes h!#e with their neighbours? 

    I think the most !ommon problem is probabl" noise. It's diffi!ult to li%e next to people

    who ha%e a dog that barks at night& or who pla" loud musi! or ha%e too man" parties.

    9o& I'm not %er" good at remembering numbers. I don't think it's ne!essar" to learn

    The most important number to remember on a dail" basis is the pin number for "our

    Yes& I write a lot of emails as part of m" /ob. I work for a !ompan" that has offi!es in

    se%eral !ountries& so we use email to !ommuni!ate.

    I probabl" write between and 10 work emails e%er" da"& and I send emails to

    friends or famil" a few times a week.

    It depends what I>m doing. I prefer the !omputer for most things be!ause it>s faster

    and "ou !an sa%e or !op" things& but I still like making notes or writing ideas down b"

    hand.

    %o you think &om"uters might one d!y re"l!&e h!ndwriting? 

    9o& I think we will alwa"s write b" hand as well. I think it>s an important skill& and

    s!hools will !ontinue to tea!h !hildren to write b" hand before the" learn to t"pe.

    IELTS Speaking ,art 1( short& simple answers

    The first part of the IELTS Speaking Test lasts around $ to minutes. The examiner

    asks about 10 *uestions related to "ou& "our dail" life and "our interests. 4ommon

    topi!s are hobbies& famil"& friends& food& musi! et!.

    ,art 1 *uestions are supposed to be eas"& and the examiner must get through all of

    the *uestions in minutes or less. That's onl" about 30 se!onds per *uestion. If "ou

    tr" to gi%e long answers& the examiner will interrupt "ou. " ad%i!e is to keep ,art 1

    answers %er" simple(

    .o yo" prefer #ome/cooked food or food from resta"rants

    You don't need to sa" an" more than this. ;ust answer the *uestion with a full

    I'd like to be good at tennis. It must be great to be able to hit the ball as hard as "ou

    I don't wat!h mu!h sport on T and I'm not a big sports fan& so I think I wouldprobabl" en/o" doing sports more than wat!hing them.

    The simple answer is that the 3 parts are not s!ored separatel": the examiner rates

    the student's performan!e as a whole. In this sense& neither part is more important.
