Value of technical communities
IEEE’s efforts benefit the worldwide technological community at a global level– Aggregate people with similar technical interests to build a
vibrant community leading the field– Foster technological advancement – Disseminate knowledge– Network with professionals and students– Enable professional growth– Nurture the new generation– Feed aspirations– Develop the technical community at worldwide level producing its
leadership– Develop the technical community at local level, providing local
excellence and service to academy, industry, and society
Worldwide & local technical communities
Worldwide technical communities– Defined groups in a particular technical area
– Societies, Technical Councils, Technical Communities (many structured under Technical Activities Board: “TAB”)
– IEEE Standards Association
Local technical communities– Defined by local geographic area
– Regions, Sections (structured under Member and Geographic Activities – “MGA”)
– Chapters (jointly structured under MGA and TAB)
Societies and Technical Councils
Societies– Promote and foster technical communities within a specialized
field of interest through conferences, publications, events, educational activities, and services
Technical Councils– Groups of Societies working together in a technical area across
technological lines, disseminating knowledge through conferences, publications, events, educational activities, and services

Technical Communities
Nurture and foster advancement of knowledge in emerging technology and application areasAccomplish this mission through conferences, publications, educational activities, etc. – Cloud Computing– Internet of Things– Smart Cities– Rebooting Computing– Software Defined Networks– Transportation Electrification – Smart Grid– Life Sciences– Green ICT
IEEE Standards Association
Technical community within IEEE that nurtures, develops, and advances global technologiesUmbrella under which technical communities can work to devise standards and standards-related activities worldwide
Society/Technical Council Chapters
Technical community within a specific geographic areaConsist of members from one or more IEEE Societies/Technical Councils who share technical interests and geographical proximityChapter activities include:– Guest speakers– Workshops– Seminars– Conferences– Tutorials
Nurturing & developing a technical community
Goals in developing a technical community
Bring people with similar interests togetherDisseminate knowledge via conferences, publications, and other activitiesMotivate volunteers within technical communityNetwork with others within the technical communityPromote diversity within the organizationFoster leadership development and evolution
Nurturing worldwide technical communities
Organize and participate in technical activitiesConferences– Active participation in Society/Technical Council conferences
– Paper submission– Paper reviewing– Organizing a new conference– Participating in a technical or organizing committee– Organizing special activities in conferences (competitions,
tutorials, special sessions, keynote speakers)
Nurturing worldwide technical communities
Journals– Participate as an editor, author, reviewer, or as a liaison– Organize special issues of journals
Education– Organize workshops, lecture series, symposiums, webinars,
tutorials, etc.
Recognize contributors to communityOutreach– Web site– Social media platforms– Newsletters
Nurturing worldwide technical communities
Ensure timeliness of activities within technical community– Incubate new and evolving technical subjects
Expand technical community– Foster relationships with other Society/Technical Councils,
Chapters, and/or Student Branches, in interdisciplinary areas– Foster relationships with Sister Societies at a worldwide level
Embrace and integrate all components of the worldwide technical community– Academy, industry, professionals, students, government
employees
Nurturing worldwide technical communities
Nurture diversity within technical community– Technological background and employment; gender; geographical
origin; age
Nurture future leadership– Train future leaders within technical community– Experienced leaders serve as mentors– Develop young volunteers and provide with increasing
responsibilities– Emphasize that volunteer experience should be personally and
professionally rewarding and enjoyable
Nurturing local technical communities
Organize and participate in local technical activities– Conferences– Educational activities– Recognition– Outreach
Incubate new and emerging technologies and application areas which are of special interest to local area
Nurturing local technical communities
Disseminate knowledge in these special interest areas through activities for the benefit of the local community:– Participate in conferences– Identify key players in your area (distinguished speakers,
volunteers, industry partnerships)– Cultivate educational opportunities (webinars, tutorials,
symposia, etc.)
Nurture diversity within local technical communityEmbrace and integrate components of local communityNurture future leaders of local community
Creating a technical community
Creating a technical community at worldwide level
Technical community within a Society/Technical Council– Identify a topic
– Relevant for the Society/Technical Council– Broad enough within the scope of the Society/Technical Council– Not overlapping with existing technical communities within the
Society/Technical Council– Create the description of topic– Contact the Vice President-Technical Activities and propose the
committee– Suggest people who may be interested in participating if
technical committee will be established– Suggest possible technical activities
How to volunteer at worldwide level
There are many opportunities to volunteer– Organizer of technical activities (education, conferences,
publications, etc.)– Member of Society/Technical Council committee– Chair of Society/Technical Council Committees (technical,
education, conference, publication, etc.)– Society/Technical Council Officer (President/Vice President)– Division Director– TAB Committee Member– TAB Committee Chair– Vice President-Technical Activities– IEEE Board of DirectorsAvailable positions and descriptions found on TAB Nominations and Appointments site, as well as on individual Society/Technical Council Web sitesSelf-nominated or endorsed by another member
Creating a technical community at local level
New Chapter of IEEE Society/Technical Council– Organizer must gather 12 or more signatures from IEEE members
on a petition of interest (graduate student or higher-grade members of the Society/Technical Council)
– Approval is required from Section and Society/Technical Council
New Joint Chapter of Society/Technical Council– Comprised of two or more Societies/Technical Councils with
members who share similar field of interest– Provide broader perspective / potential events and info sharing– Petition approval by Section and Society/Technical Council
Creating a technical community at local level
New Joint Section Chapter– Membership across boundaries of two or more Sections– Only one Section is the “administrative parent,” responsible for
overseeing Chapter– Provide opportunities for reaching out to communities living
nearby and sharing common interests– Petition approval by Sections and Society/Technical Council
Expand an existing Chapter by adding further Societies/Technical Councils
Maintaining a technical community at local level
Regular meetings must be held (2+ per year) at Section meetingsNetworking of people should be promotedOfficers should network regularly and stay in touch with Societies/Technical Councils to which Chapter belongsUnits must report annually to the Section, Society/Technical Council, and IEEE Headquarters– Reporting activities allows Sections to receive more financial support from
IEEE which may be partially transferred to Chapters to fund activities
Technical activities must be organized to build interest in the community including topics and activities of interest to academics, professionals, and students
How to volunteer at local level
Structure in place to build local Chapter activitiesOpportunities for volunteering– Active member (organizer of technical activities)– Secretary– Treasurer– Member of committee– Chair of committee– Vice Chair– Chair
