Section and has conducted many successful events during

the academic year 2013-2014. The brief report of the

IEEE-SJCE

IEEE-SJCE was established in 1992, for the purpose of sharing technical knowledge

and experience with its parent body, IEEE. IEEE-SJCE is the brainchild of technically proficient

students, with the motive of improvising the student community in technical arena. It works on

instilling a hunger for technical knowhow and strong fundamentals among the students of

Mysore hub as a whole. Since its inception, IEEE-SJCE has been conducting a number of well

organized events consistently.

IEEE-SJCE conducts two annual technical

fests during odd and even semesters. The

odd semester fest Tuxedo is devoted to

aggrandize open source among the

student community. The event semester

fest Cyberia is aimed at strengthening

the relation between industry and

academia.

IEEE-SJCE has over 150 IEEE members for the academic year 2013-2014. The

members are very active and enthusiastic to learn. Monthly meets will be conducted where

discussions will be made about the current trends among students and what new measures can

be taken from our side to help the students to the best. These meetings are aimed at

inculcating good communication skills and event organizing capability among the IEEE

members. Through these meetings, feedback will be taken from members of all branches,

about their class response towards an event conducted through IEEE and based on this

feedback, suitable changes will be made so that students get benefitted to the greatest extent

in future.

IEEE Electron Devices Society has been providing students with the basic electronic

component knowledge since its inception in Sri Jayachamarajendra College of Engineering.

Students are getting more familiarized with components, the various technique of circuit

making and the basics of robot building. It’s been the constant effort of the students who are a

part of this student branch and helping the enthusiastic participants a lot with their varied

queries on electron devices and components.

IEEE-SJCE Orientation Day

Release of Interface Attendees for the inauguration

The IEEE-SJCE Orientation Day was conducted on the 27th of August, 2013 in IS seminar hall at 5.30 p.m. More than a hundred students attended the session. Dr.C.R.Venugopal, (HOD, Department of E&C), Mr.R.S.Anandamurthy (HOD, Department OF EEE), Mr.K.V.A.Balaji (HOD, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Mr.M.J.Sampath Kumar were the guests on the occasion. The main objective of the orientation day was to introduce IEEE to the freshers and to make them well aware of the numerous advantages of the IEEE membership. The session also helped the students to gain better acquaintance of the various IEEE activities which are carried out throughout the academic year. Addressing the audience, Dr.C.R.Venugopal, stressed on the importance of being an IEEE member, and also shared some inspiring stories of many successful alumni who were a part of IEEE-SJCE during their student years. This was followed by releasing of the ‘INTERFACE’. Interface is a technical magazine released by the IEEE-Editorial board, thrice a year, of which the first issue of the academic year is released on the IEEE orientation day. AbhayRaina, Editor-in-chief, IEEE Ed-Board, handed over the magazine to the chief guests. Later the copies were distributed to the audience. This was followed by presentations by the chairpersons of various societies of IEEE-SJCE. Towards the end of the session, there was a demonstration of the robots built by the students.

Many other interesting projects done by the final year students were also displayed. The

audience was delighted to watch the presentations and appreciated the projects and

demonstrations.

Snap Circuits

In order to create awareness among first year students, IEEE-SJCE EDS came up with an idea of conducting Snap Circuits workshop.

The workshop was conducted for first and second year exclusively. Initially the

participants were divided into 3 groups. And the workshop was conducted for 2 days. The first

group was made to attend the workshop in the first session in one day and other 2 groups were

made to attend it on the next day. Initially they were shown the videos of many easy circuit

building techniques and then the seniors explained the circuits which were already built using

the kit. The workshop was broken into two parts. Basic circuits were built using the kits. The

participants were asked to make a group of five and visit each circuit in succession where the

seniors at each circuit explained them in detail the working of each circuit. Then students were

allowed to explore different circuits with the help of the manuals which came with the kits

under the supervision of seniors. A total of 127 students attended the workshop.

Vacation Project Mania 4.0

IEEE-EDS, a major wing of IEEE-SJCE Student Chapter initiates its academic activities every year by taking up ‘Vacation Project Mania’ during vacations. The main motto or aim of this vacation project mania is to convey ideas and the practical knowledge of seniors to the juniors, mainly to have a better exposure to practical aspects and global thinking. Vacation Project mania 4.0 was conducted during semester end holidays (4th July to 27th July), with the simple thought that students utilize their holidays in a constructive manner and can actively participate to learn something to its core. Students from all the circuit branches (around 110 students) attended the project sessions every day for 3 hours. They covered the most important topics which are basic to the circuit branches. VPM 4.0 was devised into three phases:

First phase (VPM 4.0.1): In the first phase, the attendants of the session were taught to design some basic analog

electronic circuits and its practical implication. VPM 4.0.1 ran for about 9 days, from 4th to 12th

July, at Electronics Labs of Department of Electronics and Communication, SJCE. In this phase,

seniors put forward their knowledge of electronic circuits in the form presentation. Juniors did

their own regulated power supply (constant and variable), current deriver circuit, astable and

monostable multi-vibrator circuit (Using 555 timer IC), burglar alarm, water level indicators,

comparator circuits etc.

Second phase (VPM 4.0.2): Second phase of vacation project mania started on 16th of July and the sessions were conducted for about ten days at IS seminar hall. The second phase was very different where students not only learnt programming microcontrollers, but also built their own development board and USBasp. The students also had a hands-on experience on eclipse IDE software in which they learnt to program their microcontrollers.

Third phase (VPM 4.0.3): The third phase of VPM is a project competition. The students have learnt many practical aspects in the first two phases of VPM. They can devise their own ideas and implement them to a project, relevant for the real world. The projects will be presented in a later session. After evaluation, the projects will be awarded with prizes. All participants who attended VPM will be given certificates. After this, students were informed to come up with the projects. We received 10

Projects from the participants. They are evaluated by judges from BOSCH and ITTIAM and prizes

were given to the projects with better implementation and innovative ideas.

In order to maintain the interest levels of students during these 25 days long days, we

had organized informal events in between the main events that would not only give them a

change from regular schedule, but also see to that they feel free with the seniors so that they

can clear their doubts without any hesitation. We were even giving away perks to the students

and teams who were most active so that we could get maximum interest and involvement.

Web designing Mania

IEEE-WDB, a wing of IEEE-SJCE student chapter conducted web designing sessions from

July 5th and went up to July 15th at CS lecture hall. The aim of WDB is to invoke interest in

students about the concept of web designing and making them self sufficient to design and

manage websites.

This course went hand in hand with Vacation Project Mania. While Vacation Project

Mania was given a slot between 09:30 AM to 01:30 PM, Web Designing mania slots were from

02:30 PM to 05:00 PM. We had about 40 entries. Sachin. K Bhat and Sparshith. N Rai from 7th

semester CS handled the sessions. We had about 10 volunteers to see to that individual

The topics covered in the session include HTML basics, Java, Java-script, jQuery, PHP

basics etc. HTML is the basic language which is initially used to build a website. HTML is the

main markup language for creating web pages and other information that can be displayed in a

web browser, whereas Java is a general-purpose object oriented computer programming

language which gives the flexibility to the application developers to write the code once and

run it anywhere. Students were exposed to all these programming aspects where they learnt

the major differences between various softwares and their advantages.

The students also got a vague idea about open source as they also used jQuery which is

a free, open source software, licensed under MIT license. They also learnt PHP which is a

server-side scripting language designed for web development. After the sessions, participants had

to submit a project in groups where they had to design their own website from scratch. The best design,

being most attractive, fluidic and fully fuctional would win. The team of Kruthi, Priyanka and Archana

from CS bagged the first prize.

WEEKLY EVENTS

IEEE-SJCE, under its active wings, IEEE-SJCE EDS, IEEE-SJCE WBD and IEEE-SJCE WIE,

conducts the following events every week. Students from all circuit branches, IEEE members, as

well as non-IEEE members take part in these events in large numbers. The weekly sessions aim

at boosting 1st and 2nd year students with technical and non-technical skills which are not a part

of the curriculum.

1. IEEE Women in Engineering

WIE is the largest international professional organization dedicated to promote

women engineers and scientists and inspiring girls around the world to follow their academic

interests to a career in engineering. The mission of IEEE WIE is to facilitate the global

recruitment and retention of women in technical disciplines. IEEE WIE envisions a vibrant

community of IEEE women and men collectively using their diverse talents to innovate for the

benefit of humanity.

In this regard, IEEE-SJCE hosts a few events from WIE every year. Speak-o-meter is one such weekly event conducted on every Tuesdays. This helps the students to build up their communication skills. It also brings up confidence among students to actively involve in groups. This event on a whole aims at training students to perform well at thier placements. The first week, had an ice breaking session where students were made to participate in various activities so that they got to mingle with new people. The later sessions were followed by group discussions which included both technical and social topics. Students participated actively in such discussions and came up with a few practical solutions while addressing some social issues. There was a huge turnout for speak-o-meter this year.

2. IEEE STAR

The IEEE WIE Student-Teacher and Research Engineer/Scientist (STAR) Program was

developed to address the growing concern that, at a young age, girls are discouraged from

careers in mathematics, science, and engineering.

Volunteers from IEEE-WIE has initiated IEEE STAR for children at Bapuji’s Children

Home, an orphanage at Mysore which houses 30-40 children. The children there don’t get a

chance to learn computers hands on. Volunteers from IEEE SJCE WIE branch visit the orphanage

every week and help them get acquainted with basic tools of computer like MS- Paint, Word

and PowerPoint, alongside of which they were made to answer questionnaires on social science

and play charade. Working with the MS tools helped these kids pick up speed-typing,

presentation making, painting with different tools like auto-fill etc.

They also help them with their academics by solving their doubts in Mathematics and

Science. Personality development is given due importance and several supporting activities for

the same are conducted.

As a part of this program, IEEE-SJCE alumni have donated computer work books, stationary materials and essential garments for the girls.

3. Practical Electronics

Practical Electronics is an educative weekly event aiming at improvising the knowledge of student members of SJCE Student branch. These sessions provided fundamental practical approach to students and helped them in developing simple to complex circuits in step-by-step manner. The main motto of practical electronics was to introduce students to the upcoming technology, to give practical exposure in turn motivating them to innovate something better. It was conducted on every Thursday between 5:30pm and 7:00pm. A lot of volunteers from 3rd and 4th year EC, EE and IT had taken initiative to assist juniors to improve their understanding in basic electronics.

Every session was divided into three sub sessions: 1. Theory

2. Practicals

3. Demonstration and interaction. The students were provided with the platform to give a short talk and to discuss their

ideas during interaction. The theory sessions included introduction of components, principle,

usability and limitations. Practical sessions were meant for demonstration of projects,

simulation of circuits and some hands on session for juniors based on the components

discussed. All these sessions got affirmative feedback from students. This was divided into 5

sessions where students learnt in detail about diodes and applications, LEDs, LED matrix, power

supplies and transformers, IR and LDR sensors, principles of weighing machine etc.

4. Web Designing

Web designing sessions were conducted on every Wednesdays to teach the students the

basic art of designing websites. There was a huge turnout for these sessions till the end of the

semester. The topics covered in the sessions include HTML basics, Java, Java-script, jQuery, PHP

basics etc. The aim of WDB is to invoke interest in students about the concept of web designing and

making them self sufficient to design and manage websites. After learning the basics of web

designing, the students were curious to design their own, general purpose websites. Around 100

students attended the sessions regularly.

These sessions were designed for students from all branches. So web designing was

thought to the participants right from scratch. Each session was divided into theory sessions

and hands on sessions, both going hand in hand. The theory part of a particular topic was

explained at first and then the participants had to work on the same code in their respective

laptops. We had a good number of volunteers for these sessions and so all the students were

given individual attention. Finally, seniors made the participants aware about hosting the

website and also about website maintenance, which are very much need for a career as a web

designer.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONGRESS

The Student Leadership Congress (SLC) is an annual event held by IEEE Bangalore Section. It aims at benefiting the student members in managing innovative activities and improving their team building and leadership skills. It hopes to improve student branch operations and the networking amongst student branch members.

This year, the Student Leadership

Congress 2013 was hosted by Mysore hub in collaboration with the student branches of six colleges. The event was held on the 14th and 15th of September of 2013 at Suttur. The event was a greater success than expected with over a hundred enthusiastic students from all over Karnataka. The theme of the 2-day event was, 'Leadership and Entrepreneurship'.

The first session for Day-1 of SLC 2013 was by Mr. Pavan Sondur, CEO of Unbxd. Unbxd

was started by Mr. Prashanth Kumar and Mr. Pavan Sondur himself. They're both alumni of SJCE, Mysore. They are also active members and office-bearers at IEEE SJCE. Mr. Pavan Sondur shared his past experiences about his college life and how that had an impact on his achievements as an entrepreneur. He also spoke about how one should and could start his/her own company. Dr. Sudheendra Kaushik held the next session. In a world like ours, where people flock

together like sheep in search of materialistic pleasure, empowering oneself and realizing the

importance of one's contribution to the world by using one's talent and working on what one

loves is very crucial .He succeeded in doing just that, with his witty stories and a truly, truly

motivating talk about what leadership is.

Lunch was followed by the next session by Mr.Ravikiran Annaswamy, who is the

current Vice Chairman for IEEE Bangalore section. This first activity of the day was the '50-rupee

Activity’. It is a very popular E-Cell introductory game, which involves creating innovative paper

products having bought stationary from a market. The cycle of entrepreneurship was

introduced in a fun and interactive way. The event tested their leadership as well as team-

playing skills.

Appropriately, this was followed by a session on patenting and IP filing by

Mr.Rakesh Prabhu. Mr.Rakesh is a Registered Patent Agent before the Indian Patent Office and

is a Partner of ALMT Legal.

In the evening, yet another engaging activity called 'Udaan' was conducted. Team members elected their CEO, CMO, CFO, COO, leads etc., and then branded their company. By building a product (aircraft prototype) by buying the raw materials required in a market that simulated real-life market conditions, they approached investors (small scale investor, large scale investor, public sector official etc) and then pitched their product. They obtained an order which they had to deliver in time. The one with the highest turnover won. The outcome was to understand startup dynamics, market trends, investor mindset, basics of a balance sheet etc. A session by Mr.Manjunath Iyer was the first event for the second day. He is the Chairperson of IEEE GOLD Banglaore. GOLD stands for Graduates Of Last Decade. He briefed the students about reaping the benefits of IEEE after graduation, as a working professional. Then there was a session by the budding entrepreneurs of Mysore, Mr.Srinidhi Prahalad, the founder of Reinventio - a startup (student of NIE, Mysore). He gave the much needed drive to be an entrepreneur and pursue our passions. Mr. Nikhil Furtado, founder of three thriving businesses -Gotee Apparel, Hidden Reflections and Jugaad, and co-founder of iPrint3D (student of VVCE, Mysore) spoke to about his journey as a student entrepreneur. After the break for lunch, one of the most thought-provoking and eye-opening sessions of the day, was held by Dr.Balasubramaniam. At a very young age, he founded the Swami Vivekananda Youth Movement. He represented the state of Karnataka in support of Anna Hazaare's protest concerning the Lokpal Bill. The last event, but one of the best sessions of the day was by Mr. Goutham Prasad. He spoke of his journey in IEEE and how much the students would gain by actively participating and volunteering for IEEE. The then Mysore Hub Lead, Sushma. B, from IEEE-SJCE was in charge of organizing the whole event. The grand success of the event may be attributed to the volunteers from IEEE-SJCE and other colleges under Mysore Hub. It was an event that managed to incorporate fun, knowledge and networking in just two days; it was a power-packed event.

Soldering and Etching Workshop

Soldering is a concept used in each and every electronic appliance. It’s necessary to know the proper soldering techniques. Keeping this in mind, IEEE-EDS SJCE conducted Soldering and Etching workshop on 29th September. Students were asked to register their names 2 weeks before the planned date. Totally 43 teams (2 in a team) from different branches of SJCE participated in the workshop. The workshop was conducted in 2 sessions at Electronics Labs of Department of Electronics and Communication, SJCE. Soldering in 1st session and Etching in the next session. In the Soldering session students were made to build Window Comparator circuit using Quad Comparators as the basic ADC. We seniors first explained the circuit and then taught the proper techniques of soldering. The session continued till 1:30 in the afternoon. Soldering includes interconnecting the components using wires if necessary, and this process becomes cumbersome if the circuit is too complex. To overcome this Etching process is employed wherein the required layout of the circuit is designed using a Software (Express PCB) and the same layout is imprinted on to a copper board, then the components are placed in their respective places and again they are soldered. In Etching workshop the students were made to work with Transistor Tester Circuit using 555-timer. The aim was to check whether the transistor works properly or not. If a good transistor is connected, it will produce a short across the LED pair when the

voltage is in one direction and only one LED will flash. If the transistor is open, both LED"s will

flash and if the transistor is shorted, neither LED will flash.

TUXEDO’13

Tuxedo is an annual technical fest conducted every odd semester by IEEE-SJCE. It

mainly deals with Open Source Software and its features along with acquainting open source

revolution to newbies. This year, the fest was conducted on 9th and 10th of November, which

marks the successful completion of 12 consecutive Tuxedo fests at IEEE-SJCE. The fest began

with an inaugural ceremony on 9th November, 2.30 pm.

Mr.Somnath, from EMC2 was the chief guest for inauguration. He was accompanied by

our Principal, Dr. Syed Shakeeb Ur Rahman, Dr. C.R. Venugopal, Head of Department,

Electronics and communication and Prof. B.Shivamurthy, the Vice-principal & Head of

department Chemistry .The dignitaries were accompanied by IEEE-SJCE chairperson, Arjun U.

Prabhu. During inauguration, the 38th edition of “INTERFACE”- the bimonthly technical

magazine of IEEE-SJCE, was released by the chief guest.

The diverse upshots of Tuxedo’13 was preceded by pre tux events well

before November 9th and 10th (two days completely dedicated to tuxedo) to

invoke the feeling of the grand event. Pre tux events were,

Splash

Splash was a painting competition

conducted by IEEE-WIE with a theme “OPEN

SOURCE”. It was held on October 30th 2013. The

main aim was to enlighten students, specially the

1st and 2nd year students regarding the concept

of open source. Same paintings were used to

publicize the fest which was a week later. Over 25

participants registered for the event. Out of which

18 were IEEE members and rest being non IEEE

members. R.S.Anandamurthy, Head of the

Department, Department of Electrical and

Electronics Engineering, judged the paintings with

his vast knowledge in Open Source.

Tux Talk

Tux Talk was a platform to make way for

innovative ideas using open source software or

hardware which was held on 7th November. The main

intention of this event was based on the concept that

“More the knowledge is shared, more the knowledge

you gain”. Students from 1st, 2nd and 3rd years came

up with innovative ideas based on internet protocol,

phones built using blocks and some explained the

upcoming trends in the field of open source like an OS

built based on HTML 5 called firefox.

Cryptoparty

This was an initiation to introduce the most

basic cryptography software and the fundamental

concepts of their operation to the general public,

such as the Tor anonymity network, public key

encryption (PGP/GPG), and OTR (Off The Record

messaging). Conducted on 8th November witnessed

a large gathering. Out of 82 participants who

attended the session, 58 were IEEE members.

The final showdown on 9th and 10th of November was accompanied by the

following events.

Localization

Localization is a process of adapting, translating and customizing a product (software) for a specific market to interface meaningfully to local users. Volunteers from FSMK, Mr. Rakesh and Mr. Jaikumar handled a 3 hour session which evoked a sense of love towards our local language. The participants were later asked to convert some complex medical terms from English to Kannada so that everyone would be proud in saying they have contributed to open source.

LaTeX

LaTeX is a document preparation

system and document markup language

which uses TeX typesetting program for

formatting its output. The session was

conducted by R.S. Anandamurthy, Head of

the Department of Electrical and

Electronics Engineering, SJCE. It was a

hands on session which went on for about

2 hours. 30 participants registered for the

event of which 17 were IEEE members.

Tech Quiz

As members asked us to conduct a Tech quiz

during the monthly members meet, we planned to

have one for Tuxedo in which the main stress was

laid to promote open source. For the same reason,

Quiz master Kevin Paul came up with a set of

questions based on Linux and other open source

software. It was a tough competition though. But

both participants and spectators enjoyed the event.

It’s notable that participants were not only from

engineering colleges, but we also had participants

from Mysore Medical College.

Blender

Free and open-source 3D computer graphics software product used for creating

animated films, visual effects, art, 3D printed models, interactive 3D applications and video

games included 3D modeling, UV unwrapping, texturing, rigging and skinning, fluid and smoke

simulation, particle simulation, soft body simulation, sculpting, animating, match moving,

camera tracking, rendering, video editing and compositing was the most successful event which

beautified the whole two day program. Most enjoyed by all the participants marked a happy

ending.

The event was conducted by the Mr.Sharath and Mr.Abhishek from Free Software

Movement Karnataka. We had participants from all over Mysore for the event. The event was

like the feather in the cap for Tux’13.

Accomplishments of IEEE-SJCE

The activities of the Electron Devices Society are governed by a Constitution and Bylaws

and administered by a Board of Governors(BoG) consisting of 4 officers, 22 elected members-

at-large and about 550’ex-officio’ members. There are two BoG meetings a year, with one

meeting always being held in December in conjunction with the International Electron Devices

Meeting (IEDM). The other BoG meeting is normally held in the May-June time period in

conjunction with another EDS sponsored conference. EDS members are encouraged to become

involved with the activities of the Society and its BoG.

This June 2013 EDS BoG meet was held on 1st and 2nd of June 2013 at Hong Kong

Polytechnic University, Hong Kong. Rakesh Kumar T S (Chairman, IEEE SJCE EDS) and Suhail

Ahmed Khan (Joint Secretary, IEEE SJCE EDS) represented EDS SJCE in the meet. The meet was

arranged by Mansun Chan of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

All the chapters were given 5 minutes to present about the activities like workshops,

mini-colloquial conducted in their chapters. All EDS Vice Presidents and Officers made a

presentation about their respective areas during the BoG meeting. Later various issues in all the

chapters were discussed and the board came up with few solutions. The measures to increase

the memberships were also discussed.

Yanthrix - Robotics Workshop

Yanthrix was one of the most awaited workshops at SJCE Mysore. . IEEE –EDS has been

conducting this tech workshop from the past 4 years. Every year the workshop has seen

exponential improvements both in terms of organising and the technical stuff taught in the

workshop. Every year the feedback we receive from the student community is that the

workshop was worth attending, that they spent their weekend time in a more constructive way

and they took away more than what they have paid.

In the workshop we aim at educating the students with a Practical and Design oriented

approach. The workshop is so designed that it is best suited to beginners who are taking their

first step towards robotics, embedded systems and microcontroller technology. It is organised

such the students gain the basics of automation and at the end of the workshop they are

comfortable to design on their own.

This year we named our robotics workshop as Yanthrix. It was a two day workshop and it

was conducted during the even semester of 2014 on 15th & 16th February, at MBA Auditorium,

SJCE. The planning for the workshop and publicity were carried out months before the event.

For the design of the ATmega16 development board, USBasp, IR Sensor board and the chassis,

we did not rely on prototypes available in market. Instead they were indigenously designed

and tested by the volunteers of the workshop.

We had a huge response from the student community. Totally we had 30 (4 members in a

team) teams registered. We received entries from circuit as well as non-circuit branches. We

had entries from other colleges as well. Sample codes, hardware (Development boards,

USBasp, IR sensors) debugging, software installation, basic concepts teaching, user code debug

were done by the volunteers themselves.

Software installations for most of the teams were finished a day prior to the workshop.

WinAVR, Atmel Studio4, Khazama AVR Programmer, USBasp drivers, IP Webcam.apk, JAVA

were the programs supplied to the teams. They were also supplied with required datasheets,

sample codes and necessary header and c source files.

Since the workshop had participants from 1st year BE we started the workshop by briefing

them about basic digital electronics and number representation in Binary and Hexadecimal.

Later we had a short presentation on Embedded C, Introduction to ATmega AVR architecture

(ATmega8 and ATmega16), USBasp need and working, Development board design which were

needed for the workshop. Then, they were taught Analog to Digital conversion, Sensors like LDR

and IR pair, H – Bridge motor driver and the concepts of timers, counters & interrupts.

Students learnt to code and move the bot accordingly. They learnt to interface IR sensors

using ADC of the MCU and build an edge avoiding robot. Later they learnt to use DTMF module

in conjunction with their MCU and learnt to remotely control the bot using a cellphone. This

cellphone controlled bot was the highlight of the workshop. We took this application to a next

level by achieving video transfer from the cellphone placed on the bot. By looking into the

video, now we were able to control the bot even when it was out of sight, using another

cellphone (Controller) by establishing a call from the host and the controller.

Distinguished Lecture on Software

Defined Radio

A guest Lecture was delivered on 28th January, 2014 by Dr Jeffrey Pawlan in which

more than 150 students took part. Most of the participants were IEEE members even though

the event was kept open for everyone. Dr Jeffrey Pawlan a veteran in the field of Analog, RF

and microwave design and an engineer for over 4 decades, had flown from California to deliver

this particular lecture on Software Defined Radio. Having worked towards prestigious NASA

projects such as the very successful SARSAT/CORPAS search and rescue satellite ground station,

and having an engineering degree from UCLA, his eminence in the field of microwave and RF

design was irrefutable.

Dr. Jeffrey Pawlan’s arrival immediately materialized into not only a scholastic

experience but also an enthusing one. Putting it in his own words, he said “I’m here to inspire

you.” As a senior member of the IEEE MTT-S society, he voluntarily lectures students on

Microwave theory, all over the world. The lecture was altogether educational and professional,

and was duly appreciated by students who seemed to be mesmerized.

He exemplified the need for Software defined radio, first by illustrating the

shortcomings of the obsolete generation 1 ‘Zero-IF/Homodyne’ radio, and quickly progressed to

the generation 2 and generation 3 radio. As he did delineate, the later radios included a larger

number of A/D converters, and quadrature hybrids, which reduced costs while also reducing

the size of the radios, and also included concepts of oversampling and under sampling.

Furthermore comparison of the conventional circuitry also helped appreciate the need for SDR

(Software Defined Radio).

The concepts of Oversampling and under-sampling in the field of SDR were augmented

by a live demonstration of the same, and a graphic explanation of Nyquist Zones. While the

audience was rapt with the demonstrations, he spoke of generation IV fixed radio, and FPGA

and explained the circuitry concepts behind both. A few questions by Dr Jeffrey had no takers

at all owing to its complexity but he was glad to explain the underlying concepts, for the crowd

was heterogeneous, with freshmen, sophomore and seniors in the hall.

The lecture was followed by a short speech given by the HOD of Electronics and

communication Dr C.R.Venugopal which supplemented Dr Jeffrey’s lecture by describing the

career oriented prospects of the topics discussed. Furthermore Dr C.R.Venugopal felicitated Dr

Jeffrey Pawlan with a memento- a miniaturized Mysore Palace – as a token of gratitude for his

remarkably splendid lecture. While Dr Jeffrey’s lecture had a significant impact on the students

and persuaded them to consider Microwave and radio technologies, it also proved to be a

vibrant experience to everyone in the audience. We have been honored to have hosted him at

our college.

Hack Track

IEEE-SJCE conducted an Ethical hacking workshop as a pre Cyberia event by Mr. Sunny

Vaghela who is the director and Chief Technical Officer of Techdefence. The workshop was

conducted on two days that is the 1st and 2nd of March. 170 students from SJCE as well as all

other colleges attended the workshop enthusiastically. The primary reason behind conducting

this workshop was to give a live demonstration of different Cyber attacks, hands on practice on

web application assessment, cyber crime investigation techniques, etc.

The workshop was divided into five sessions where students learnt the basics of

information gathering in first session and updated their knowledge up to phishing. The best

part of the workshop was live demonstrations. Mr. Sunny Vaghela demonstrated various

hacking methods on a live computer before all participants. He also discussed various

interesting cases that he solved as a crime solver. He stressed on the part of IT security as the

need of the day where people need to learn various phishing techniques and be secure against

all such things. The two-day workshop ended euphorically. The participants were contented at

the sessions. They were provided access to materials like videos for further studies. On a whole,

the event was appreciated to the extreme extent.

Workshop on Labview

Labview is a system-design platform and development environment for a visual

programming language from National Instruments. Students had requested for a workshop on

Labview during the monthly IEEE meet. Hence, IEEE-SJCE had directly contacted people from

the National Instruments Company itself to come and teach the students about the

multitudinous applications of this software.

The workshop was free and open to all. There was an entrance test conducted by the

company on 9th March 2014. A total of 120 students appeared for the test, out of which 70

students were selected to attend. The eligibility test was followed by a two day free workshop

at the MBA Auditorium Hall on 10th and 11th of March between 10 AM to 5 PM. The students

were amazed after they saw some videos showing the greatest research projects such as

automatic machine controlled eye-surgery, pupil controlled wheelchair, etc that used Labview.

Mr. Anurag Dhaipule from National Instruments was an alumni of SJCE and he

emphasized on how the activities of IEEE-SJCE during his student life had helped him in his

career at National Instruments. This inspired the participants to join IEEE and actively involve in

its activities. During the workshop, live demos were given in a simulation kit that was brought

by the team from NI. Students were excited seeing how easy analyzing things could be made

using a visually programmable graphical simulator like Labview. Students were asked to

generate sine wave, saw tooth wave, square wave, hanning and hamming codes, etc. Students

became more zelous on the second day as it was revealed that Labview licenses each worth

two lakhs were to be given away to the participants who could solve and submit a set of five

challenging questions in groups within a stipulated time. The workshop went on smoothly and

the students were thankful to have got a chance to attend such a magnificent workshop.

Cyberia’14

Cyberia is one among those iconic tech fests which has the history of success in high

scale. It aims to strengthen the institute-industry relationship. The students will be exposed to

challenges that will test their skills in a wide range of branches of engineering. It gives

opportunities to explore their mind in an innovative and imaginative way. The industry benefits

from a talent pool of well-rounded engineers to meet its continuing resource requirements.

Cyberia has always aimed to provide a forum for the interaction between the industry and the academia, providing a valuable platform for zealous students from all disciplines to quench their technical thirst.

Inauguration

On March 14th, the stage was all set at 6:00 for the inaugural function of Cyberia’14. With banners and posters put up throughout the campus, there was festive environment in the college. Dr. M K Radhakrishnan, SRC Vice-Chair, IEEE-EDS Region 10 was the chief guest and Mr.Harish Mysore, Director, IEEE India Office was the Guest of Honor. Dr. Syed Shakeeb Ur Rahman, Principal, SJCE and Dr. C R Venugopal, Branch Counselor, IEEE-SJCE were the other dignitaries on dais. The 39th issue of INTERFACE was released by Mr. Harish Mysore. Aparna Nambiar, Vice Chair, IEEE-SJCE gave a brief report on the activities of IEEE-SJCE during the academic year 2013-14. At the same time, Sushma B, the Mysore Hub Lead was felicitated by dignitaries for receiving the Best Student Volunteer Award from IEEE Bangalore Section.

The discussion was highly elucidating which made students realize not to rely just on the curriculum but to work on something extra. Panelists explained their views taking an example of Python language. Python Language is not a part of curriculum in most of Engineering Colleges. Yet, students know Python language which is because of their own interest. And industry is looking at students with such interest. Dr. M K Radhakrishnan expressed his views taking an example of Application of Op-amp. He questioned students if they knew how to use an op-amp as Multiplier and Divider. Students had the application of op-amp as an adder and subtractor as a part of their curriculum but not Multiplier and Divider. He meant to say, Industry is looking at people who think outside box and students who don’t set boundaries or limitations for the knowledge they get within the classroom. Mr. Harish Mysore made remark on SJCE and its standard and made a point clear to all students of SJCE that we are lucky to be in institution like SJCE. Later, students were provided an opportunity to be a part of discussion by asking a question to any of the panelists on dais. A lot of questions were addressed to Mr.Harish Mysore which were answered in a way to get applause from the person who questioned.

Talk on Big Data Analytics by IBM

Big Data Analytics being one of the trending technologies of recent years, IBM has

taken the initiative to educate young professionals regarding the ongoing research in the field

of Big Data Analytics and its advantages over traditional data analytics. We were glad to have

Mr.Bhavani Kumar Eshwar, Senior Technical Staff Member, IBM to enlighten us with knowledge

pertaining to Big Data. The session started with the need for big data by taking a simple

example of size of image in few mega pixel cameras and was compared to an advanced

technology of Giga pixel cameras which is not available in market yet. The size of images which

will be so huge that normal data analysis cannot match up to the expectations. And there

comes the need for Big Data.

Students had numerous questions to put forth before Mr.Bhavani Jumar Eshwar. Few questions that were asked are,

The speed of data analysis depends on Bandwidth. So, does Big Data have something to

do with the internet speed and hence can we expect some revolution in

telecommunication industry because of this technology??

Papyrus’14 Papyrus is a National-level Student Technical Paper Presentation Competition which is

one of the highlights of CYBERIA. Ideas, imaging and intellect serve as the ingredients for

innovation, but remain locked in the convolution of mind. With the sole purpose of exploring

the dormant ideas, CYBERIA'14 brings an opportunity to present the research and share

innovative ideas to improve present technology.

The topics included in PAPRUS’14 were:

o Development and applications of algorithms, Networking and communication, o Advanced computing, cloud computing and applications, artificial intelligence.

o VLSI & Embedded Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Bio-medical Engineering.

o Smart grids, Smart Meters, Recent advancement in power Electronics, Energy Management, and Alternate Energy Sources.

o Intelligent Automobiles, Vehicle Safety, Hybrid Vehicles, Automotive Infotainment, Fuel Cells, Green Automobiles.

PAPYRUS’14 was held in three stages:

Total of 66 Abstracts were received from various colleges from different places. • Submission of complete paper - 10/2/2014

Total of 51 complete papers were received which were evaluated by our lecturers and Top Ten Finalists were selected and were invited to present their papers in our college.

• Final presentation – 16/3/2014:

Total of 10 teams presented their papers in the form of power-point presentation and were evaluated by the esteemed Judges:

“CONTRIBUTE TO OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE WITH

RED HAT”

Open-source software (OSS) has become a fundamental part of the online movement. It

allows technology to transcend conventional class boundaries, making applications available to

the “haves”, and the “have-nots”, all over the globe.

The session conducted by Mr. Mr.Vijay Kumar Koppad basically aimed at making

students realize the importance of open source software and how students can contribute to

open source and how to extract benefit out of it. Students were introduced to tools through

which the students can build, manage issues, review contributions regarding OS and use several

source code management systems such as Git, SVN, Hg.

It paved way for students to get involved in real world development, work on projects,

understanding and fixing bugs, submitting patches, performing code reviews and having your

code reviewed and get associated with the work and culture of foundations and large

companies which sponsor many open source projects.

Then we were introduced to the Gluster community and GlusterFS , an open source,

distributed, clustered, parallel, scale-out file system running on commodity hardware, which is

fully POSIX compliant and user friendly and steps for contributing to the GlusterFS project.

A small contest was held for the students, where students were distributed the

handouts regarding the ways to contribute to Open Source with Redhat and Stall was put up at

the venue to assist students. Students were provided with several small bugs to fix and

students who successfully accomplished the task were provided with attractive goodies!

Amaze

Amaze is basically a line following robot competition

which is conducted as part of cyberia-14. Line follower is a

machine that can follow a path. The path can be visible like a

black line on a white surface (or vice-versa). This event is

organized by IEEE EDS SJCE.

Sensing a line and maneuvering the robot to stay on

course, while constantly correcting wrong moves using

feedback mechanism forms a simple yet effective closed loop

system. As a programmer you get an opportunity to ‘teach’

the robot how to follow the line thus giving it a human-like

property of responding to stimuli.

The contest was won by Darshan and team of 2nd year.

As the track was lengthy the maximum distance the winning

bot could cover was 3/4th the total in 6min 15 sec.

Talk on Entrepreneurship by Varun Agarwal

The most awaited event of

Cyberia’14 was the Talk on Entrepreneurship

by Varun Agarwal. This event was organized

in order to lay emphasis on the importance

of Entrepreneurship in the present scenario.

The event started at 8 pm. There were more

than 500 students waiting for the person

whom they consider as their inspiration. The

talk centered on his life, and how he could

achieve a lot of fame and glory in his life.

The director, the entrepreneur and the novelist life was filled with adventure worth to

share. The talk was followed by question answer session, wherein students asked him

regarding the basic plan he had, the way he executed, the problem he had to face etc. He made

us realize Doing what we wish makes our life simple and worthy. The talk was around 40 min,

which created a lot of spirit among the youngsters. On whole the event had created an impact

on the students to follow their heart and to achieve their goals.

Eldorado

Eldorado is an online treasure hunt contest conducted annually as part of Cyberia

wherein the essence of the traditional treasure hunt game with one-clue leading to another

and finally to the treasure, is captured on the virtual space. Here participants are given clues in

the form of pictures, which they have to analyze to unwrap the hidden meaning and figure out

the answer. Typing the right answer would present them with the next clue and take them a

step closer to the goal.

Apart from being an entertaining event, Eldorado also tests the participants for their

thinking, reasoning and google-ing capabilities. Thus a healthy competitive environment is

setup along with the opportunity to learn and explore hidden talents and excel at extra-

curricular activities.

Eldorado-2014 lasted for 2 days and 3 nights. It started on (11/03/14) Tuesday night at

10pm and winded up on (13/03/14) Thursday night at 12 am. The event was hosted on

www.cyberia.ieeesjce.com/eldorado and was open for participation to all. There were 411

participants in total. A forum was created solely for the purpose of interacting with the users to

address any issues and give out timely hints. There were a total of 53 levels. Rakshith Kashyap

SEM, IS became the winner by being the first to reach level 52. The 52nd

and 53rd

levels remained unsolved by anyone even as the event closed.

C Night Out

C Night Out, a C-coding contest was organized as part of Cyberia’14 to provide an

opportunity for the participants to pit their coding skills against those of other programmers

from across the world. As name indicates, the event requires coding beginning at the night and

extending into the wee hours of the morning.

On 14/03/14 (Friday), the questions were made publicly available at 9.30 pm on the

Cyberia home page (www.cyberia.ieeesjce.com). There were 7 questions in total. The rules

instructed the participants to try and efficiently solve as many problems as they could before

7.30 am the next day (15/03/14). Neatness of the code and relevant explanations offered

additional points.

E-nnovation

“E-nnovation” was a technical event in Cyberia 2014 conducted by IEEE EDS SJCE. Here,

the participants were asked to give innovative and effective solutions for practical and real-life

problems based on electronics and instrumentation.

The first round of this event, which was the prelims, was conducted on March 10th

.

There were around 44 teams registered for the prelims and there were two persons in each team. The questions in the prelims were based on basic concepts of electronics and electrical

engineering with some aptitude questions being included.

For the next round, out of 44 teams, 8 teams were selected. The participants were given

three real-life problems and they were asked to give innovative and effective solutions for the

same, within one hour. Just after the second round, the participants were asked to discuss on a

topic for five minutes. The topic was “Why in India the hardware manufacturing industries are

not investing on research and development in manufacturing? What is your view regarding this problem?? Give any suitable solution.”. The judges were

invited for the seminar round. The judges were Ashwin Rao C.S, former IEEE-SJCE-EDS vice

chairman, currently working in Analog Devices, and Mohammad Safwan, former IEEE-SJCE vice

chairman.

Exquizzite

Exquizzite is a general knowledge quiz contest which tests the day to day information

gathering capacity of a person. Like every year this year too we had participants in large

number on the finale of Cyberia’14 on 16th

March at 2:30 PM. A total of 68 teams of 2 people

each participated in the presence of around 180 viewers. The change in the Quiz master in the

form of Mr. Vinay Mudaliar brought in participants from Bangalore and other Mysore colleges.

The 1st

round comprised of questions related to latest activities with the option of

pounce. The 2nd

round was a unique with 7 questions and each answer starting with the letters

of C-Y-B-E-R-I-A. The 3rd

round was the Guessing round where the clues were displayed and

music was played. The teams were asked to link the clues and guess the common factor.

Another unique feature of this quiz was the BUZZER. Akshay Kumar, a 2nd

year EC student

made a brilliant buzzer which showed the team names in the ascending order. With his skills in Arduino and programming he gained the attention of the crowed and the praise of the Quiz master. “Such buzzer are not found even in high level quiz competitions like TATA conspiracy, one of the best buzzers I have ever seen” were the words of Mr. Vinay Mudaliar.

Mock Placements

Placement is often a word arousing a feeling of fear among many engineering students.

In order to eliminate this fear and give the students a direct exposure to the placement

procedure, we requested people from T.I.M.E to conduct mock placements at our college as a

part of Cyberia. The mock placements, as the name suggests, follows the same procedure that

students undergo during their placements.

The event was divided into three rounds, aptitude round, group discussion and

interview, giving it the feeling of facing an actual interview itself. The best part of the event was

that T.I.M.E decided to give away cash prizes up to three lakh rupees.

The first round, aptitude test was held on the 5st of March. There was a huge turnout of

around 300 students. The questions tested students of their skills in aptitude, verbal and logical

reasoning and time management. Students had a tough challenge of answering 90 questions in

one hour. Out of these 300 hundred participants, only 96 were selected into the second round,

group discussion round.

Group discussion round was held on 9rd March. This round was very interesting as the

finalists were divided into groups and had to battle on for survival. The final interview round

was on 16th March. The 14 finalists were interviewed between 10 AM to 12 PM by people from

T.I.M.E. The participants were judged based on their personality, attitude and confidence.

Though the winner and runner ups were given cash prizes, all the finalists were given special

discounts on placement training and other courses at T.I.M.E.

Junkyard

Cyberia not only aims at promoting a good relationship between industry and

academics, but also aims at bringing out the creativity and marketing ability hidden within

students. Junkyard was one such event hosted by IEEE-SJCE Editorial board at the Auditorium

on 15th March at 03:30 PM. As the name suggests, in this event, participants were given some

scrap materials and the participants were asked to use their imagination and creativity to come

up with something useful, innovative and highly attractive.

Since it was a general event, students flocked from all branches to put their creativity to

test. We had 30 teams registered with 3 or 4 in a team. The event went on like this. Participants

were given some waste material like cardboard, bottle caps and paper. They were asked to

make boat shaped car that could move on land. The team to have completed this task

successfully was given a candle and a hay stick and was asked to convert the same boat such

that it could travel in both water and land. The competition continued in this manner. It proved

to be a great stage for imagination, creativity and team work.

Jugaad

Jugaad is one more of those events which try to bring out the awesomeness inside a

student, but this time, it’s in the form of a presentation in front of a large audience. This event

was again hosted by IEEE-SJCE Editorial Board at the open air Amphitheatre at MBA block on

12th March at 03:30PM. We had around 30 teams with 2 in a team as participants and around

100 spectators for this amusing event.

Contestants were given a hilarious and meaningless topic like “Why aliens never invade

India?”. Participants had to get ready to present their reasons and justify the topic in any way

they want. Most of the participants presented their unrestricted thoughts in the form of

stomach tickling hilarious conversations and some even enacted short plays. Some teams even

came up with videos.

This was just the first round. Six teams were selected into the second round. During

second round, again more random topics were given the teams had to get ready with their talk

or presentations on the spot. On the whole, the event was very special and unique.

Eureka

An idea presentation contest, “EUREKA” was

conducted as a part of Cyberia’14 with the aim of

letting students come up with innovative

solutions for problems and present them in front

of industrial experts. The mode of presentation

was left to the creativity of the participants.

The preliminary round was conducted on 13th

of March 2014. A total of 14 teams were

registered on the day and presented their ideas

in front of a Mr. A. Thyagaraja Murthy, Associate

Professor, Department of Electronics and

Communication.

The participants were judged mainly on the following criteria:

Innovativeness of the idea Business Feasibility Presentation Skills

Among these 14 teams, a total of six teams were shortlisted for the final round. The final round of “EUREKA” was held on the 15th of March 2014. A total of six shortlisted teams presented their ideas before the judges. Judges were, Mr.Srihari from IBM and other judge being the alumnus of IEEE-SJCE, Mr. Vinol Joy D’Souza, Ex-Chairman (2011-12), currently working as Business Analyst in Mu-Sigma.

Each team was given a total of 15 minutes to put forth their ideas. The time was divided as follows:

9mins +1 min for presentation 5 mins for Q&A

Valedictory The final showdown of Cyberia’14 was the valedictory function which officially

symbolized the closing ceremony of the three day long fest. The chief guest of the session was Mr.Srihari, alumnus of our college, who is currently working for IBM. The session was presided by Dr. C.R.Venugopal, Branch counselor, IEEE-SJCE and Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication. In his speech, Mr. Srihari stressed on the importance of organizing technical fests. Later the prizes were distributed to all the prize winners in various competitions. The valediction ended with the presidential address by Dr. C.R.Venugopal. It was a delightful Cyberia adding one more successful milestone to IEEE-SJCE’s achievements.

Overall, Cyberia ‘ 14 has seen a great response from students from all over the state. Its

diversity has made it reach a large number of participants this time. We will try taking it to

greater heights in the coming years creating awareness about IEEE among more and more

people.

An Overview

IEEE-SJCE has been working for the benefit of the students, not only from SJCE, but

also colleges from the entire Mysore Hub. The then Mysore Hub Leader, Sushma. B and

volunteers from IEEE-SJCE had taken it up as their mission to take Mysore Hub to a whole new

level and also maintain a very good relationship among the different colleges coming under

Mysore Hub. We had a number of events throughout the semester which attracted and

benefitted participants from most of the colleges under the Mysore Hub.

Here, at IEEE-SJCE, we aim to provide the juniors with the right exposure so that they

can make the best use of it and give their best towards growing technology. IEEE members

here are not only benefitted technically and practically, but they are also taken to new heights

in terms of communication skills and event management.

Our efforts are towards bridging the gap between academics and the industry and we

can proudly say that IEEE-SJCE is successful on this mission. We are supported by pioneer

experts like IBM, Red Hat, Free Software Movement Karnataka (FSMK), T.I.M.E, Talent Edge

and Gate Forum who are overwhelmed by the active participation of students in various

activities.

IEEE-SJCE has been doing the job of nourishing the budding seed of interest towards

technology among the first and second year students through its various programs in such a

way as to ensure that their spirits are always kept up. In this way, IEEE is playing a pivotal role

in shaping up the future of students.

Besides, newer approaches are constantly made to attract more and more students to

get their IEEE memberships. We keep the students updated with all the advantages and

privileges that one gets by becoming an IEEE member amid most of the events and hence put

in the best efforts to promote the cause of IEEE among all the participants and the delegates.

The two technical fests conducted by us, Tuxedo and Cyberia have been a striking hit

during the current academic year and has added to the glory of IEEE-SJCE. These fests have

seen participants from throughout the Bangalore Section who were contended by their

experience here. Every year, we try to improve ourselves and extend our reach. Through

properly planned Student Branch activities and by promoting and glorifying IEEE at all

engineering colleges under Mysore Hub, we aim at seeing the Mysore Hub as the best Hub

under the Bangalore Section.
