IEEE SCC41 February 20th, 2009 (version 2.0) King’s College London was established by King George IV and the Duke of Wellington (then Prime Minister) in 1829. King’s College London is notable for the work of James Clerk Maxwell, who while a Professor at King’s introduced Maxwell’s Equations (later simplified and modified into vector form by Oliver Heaviside); without these equations the interactions among electric charge, electric current, electric fields and magnetic fields, would not be precisely understood. “[The work of Maxwell] ... the most profound and the most fruitful that physics has experienced since the time of Newton”—Albert Einstein. King’s is also notable for the work of Sir Charles Wheatstone (Acoustics, Electronics, etc.—Wheatstone Bridge), Maurice Wilkins and Rosalind Franklin (discovered the molecular structure of DNA), Charles Lyell (Geologist), Thomas Hodgkin (Hodgkin's Disease named in his honour), Frederick Maurice (Theology), Florence Nightingale (notable Nurse), Lord Lister (Surgeon), Sir James Black (Phamacology—invented Beta Blockers), The Most Reverend Desmond Tutu (Visiting Professor—Nobel Peace Laureate, South Africa Peace and Reconciliation Commission), and Sir Harrison Birtwistle (Composer). Some alumni of King’s include John Keats (Romantic Poet), Arthur C. Clarke (science fiction writer and inventor), Rory Bremner (impressionist and political satirist), William Gilbert (as in “Gilbert and Sullivan”), Michael Collins (Irish republican leader), George Carey (ex. Archbishop of Canterbury), Asma Akhras (first lady of Syria), and John Deacon (bassist for the rock band “Queen”).

TRANSPORTATION The London airports are London Heathrow, London Gatwick, London Stansted, London Luton, and London City. There is also a “Eurostar” train service between mainland Europe and London.

London Heathrow Airport Taxis in London are very expensive and not recommended for travel to/from airports. The cost of a taxi from Heathrow Airport to King’s College should be ~£60 (€72/US$90/¥8,700), with a journey time of somewhat over an hour. However, cost and duration might increase sharply dependent on circumstance (e.g., congestion). Recommended means to get to Central London are the Heathrow Express (cost £16.50/€20/US$25/¥2,400 one way, duration 15 minutes), Heathrow Connect (cost £6.90/€8.30/US$10.40/¥1,000 one way, duration 25 minutes), London Underground (i.e., Metro/Subway/Tube) Piccadilly Line (cost £4/€5/US$6/¥600 one way, duration ~1 hour), and various coach services (the largest being National Express). Note that most services leave from Heathrow Terminals 1, 2, 3, although there is a frequent free train transfer, using the Heathrow Express, between Terminal 4, Terminal 5, and Terminals 1, 2, 3.

The Heathrow Express/Connect and many coach services terminate at London Paddington Station. Some coach services terminate at London Victoria Station. To get to King’s College Strand Campus from London Paddington you may take the London Underground Bakerloo Line Southbound in the direction of Elephant and Castle, exit at Embankment Station and either walk from there or take the Circle/District Line East to Temple Station. If you are heading to Central London on the Piccadilly Line, one of many possible routes to King’s is to transfer at South Kensington Station on to the Circle/District Line Eastbound, then exit at Temple Station. You may alternatively leave the Piccadilly Line at Holborn Station and walk South-Southeast along Kingsway to King’s.

London Gatwick Airport The recommended means of transport from Gatwick to Central London are train and coach; taxi is not recommended. Train services are to London Victoria and are run by Gatwick Express (£16.90/€20/US$25/¥2,500 one way, duration 30-35 minutes) and Southern Trains (approximately £11/€13/US$16/¥1,600 one way, duration 35-40 minutes). Coaches are run by a range a companies, including National Express and easyBus prebook (prices from approx. £2 to £7, duration 1 to 1.5 hours). From London Victoria station it is a few minutes travel by London Underground to King’s College Strand Campus: Circle/District Line Eastbound to Temple Station.

London Stansted Airport You can get to Central London via the Stansted Express train service (cost £18/€20/US$25/¥2,300 one way, duration 45 minutes); there are also many bus services. Trains to Central London terminate at London Liverpool Street Station, which is well connected, located on the Northeast edge of the “City of London” financial district. From Liverpool Street Station, you may take the London Underground Central Line Westbound to Holborn, and exit there for King’s.

London Luton Airport Trains to London (King’s Cross/St. Pancras Station) take under 30 minutes via East Midlands Trains or First Capital Connect. There are also many coach services to London from Luton Airport.

London City Airport Travel to Central London is easy and cheap by Docklands Light Railway, Train, and bus services.

Eurostar Eurostar trains between Paris/Brussels and London terminate at London St. Pancras Station, which is less than 30 minutes travel from King’s Strand Campus. Bus routes 59 or 91, or London Underground to Holborn or Temple Station, may be used to get to King’s.

Page 6: IEEE SCC41 7th General Meeting Information Packagegrouper.ieee.org/groups/dyspan/meeting/files/SCC41...London City. There is also a “Eurostar” train service between mainland Europe

IEEE SCC41 February 20th, 2009 (version 2.0) Transport in London: The Curiously Named “Oyster Card” Most bus journeys in London cost ~£2, or only £1/€1.10/US$1.35/¥130 if you obtain and use a prepay “Oyster Card” (costs £3/€3.60/US$4.50/¥430, refundable deposit). Fares are also vastly cheaper if you use the Oyster Card on the London Underground, journeys in Central London costing £1.50. Hence it is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED that you obtain an Oyster Card at the first opportunity. Oyster Cards can be bought at any station and many small shops (“newsagents”).
