The activity that I enjoy the most
And how it contributes in my personal and professional life
That activity is Basketball• Basketball is a
team sport that helps develop incredible skills which I have found essential during my life.
• I started playing when I was 11 years old.• When I moved to Granada I started playing for
the CB Granada (1st National Division) Sub-14 team. I played there for 5 years total.
• With the CB Granada I won several Regionals and played 4 National Championships.
These are the skills I learned
How to be a Team Player
To be Disciplined
Leadership
Time Management
How to deal with defeat
How to be a Team Player• Every player wanted to make it to
the first team but in order to improve personally we had to improve as a team.
• We were 12 different players with different personalities but we learned how to push in one direction and how that would take us to our personal goals as well.
• Now, some of those teammates are my best friends.
To be Disciplined• Just like in anything else, you have your ups and downs
during a season. You may play less or get injured or you may not see eye to eye with your coach.
• I thought of quitting several times during 12 years but I was taught not to give up and I think this is the most important lesson I learned from basketball: Keep working and goals will be achieved.
• I ended up playing in a professional league and finding in basketball a great way to disconnect whenever I need it.
Leadership• Connected to being a team
player, leadership in a group is essential.
• I learned so much from my coaches and from my captains that now I have my own experiences that I bring to other groups when needed.
Time Management• I used to practice 4 days a week and I had a game per week at
least.• Nationals & Regionals were a week long always in a different city
which led to missing several classes per semester.• I had to develop this skill at an early age and I had to sacrifice
my weekends in order to keep doing what I loved at the same time I studied to do well at school.
• Nowadays, I believe a manage my time really well and that, for example, gave me the opportunity to work part-time while studying at law school in the US in order to pay for the latest.
How to deal with Defeat• I became really competitive
but we did not always win like in any other aspect of life.
• This was particularly hard for me but I managed to use it to keep improving.
• I end up learning more from the big losses than from the big wins.
Conclusion• I do not play at that level
anymore but I believe basketball really made me the person I am today.
• I keep playing in a minor league with other experience players for fun !
