IDIOMS ABOUT WEATHER
CALM BEFORE THE STORM
• A calm time immediately before period of violent activity or argument is the calm before the storm.
Example: Early November is usually the calm before the storm when it comes to
Christmas shopping. By November 15 the stores are pretty busy.
STORM IN A TEACUP
• If someone exaggerates a problem or makes a small problem seem far greater than it really is, then they are making a storm in a teacup
Example: The fight that Sumatra and Rosie had wasn't anything serious,
just a storm in a teacup
HEAD IS IN THE CLOUDS
• a person who has his/her head in the clouds, they have unrealistic, impractical ideas
Example: John's head is in the clouds again. He's talking about winning the
lottery.
IT'S RAINING CATS AND DOGS
• You can say "it's raining cats and dogs" if it's raining very hard.
Example: We can't go now because it's raining cats and dogs
QUICK AS A FLASH / QUICK AS A WINK / QUICK AS LIGHTNING
• If you're as quick as a flash, or quick as a wink, or quick as lightning, you're very quick.
Example: Dougie knew the answer and, quick as a flash, he put up his
hand
IT NEVER RAINS BUT IT POURS
• this means that when one bad thing happens, other bad things will inevitably happen at the same time.
Example: Sometimes we have no customers for two or three hours,
then suddenly we get 20 people all at once." Reply: "It never rains, but
it pours
