Original Next Generation Use Cases

Alan Robiette’s Sparta definition:

– Internal (intra-institutional) applications (mostly through SSO system)

– Management of access to third-party digital library-type resources (as now)

– Inter-institutional use – stable, long-term resource sharing between defined groups (e.g. shared e-learning scenarios)

– Inter-institutional use – ad hoc collaborations, potentially dynamic in nature (virtual organisations or VOs)

UK Status

Institutions joining the UK federation

– Realisation is dawning that this is not just about licensed resources.

– Realisation is dawning that identity management systems are a mess.

– Use of complete IdM systems not typical at present although growing.

– Realisation is dawning that strategy drivers need good identity management.

Use of collaborative tools.

– Very established use of VLEs – now need to open these.

– Virtual Organisation – as yet to gain traction.

– Web 2.0 mania.

Rumblings of user-centric approach to identity management.

– Idea that institution is broker not owner of identity is emerging.

– Support for taking identity provision out of service providers.

– OpenID and Cardspace getting people excited.
