Introduction

The PMT corn head features a interchangeable frame with all models of national and international combine harvesters through the use of a specific frame for the coupling of the straw elevator. This system allows that a single operator performs the job. It also levels the equipment during the harvest.

Light and resistant platforms provide high speed and demand less effort from the hydraulic system. The lateral chains are lubricated automatically, decreasing the abrasion caused by the corn straw and by the friction between the metallic parts. The lateral transmission is easy to access through the opening of the lateral lid.

The pulling rollers are formed by six fins made of high carbon steel, tempered, sharpened and welded for a greater safety. The tips of the pulling rollers are unaligned to avoid that when picking up bedridden crops, the cobs on the ground do not cause bushings, thus avoiding that any straw enters inside the equipment.

This instructions manual contains the necessary information for the best performance of this corn head. The operator must carefully read the entire manual before working with the equipment. Also, read and understand the safety recommendations.

For any further clarification or in the event of technical problems that may arise during the service, consult your dealer and the Technical Support department of the factory. They can ensure the fully functioning of your TATU corn head.

To couple the PMT on the combine harvester, approach the combine harvester head to the coupling to fit the upper part.

Lift the equipment from the soil until it reaches the necessary height to fix the lower part with the coupling locks (the locks may change according to the combine harvester model).

Then, assemble the cardan shaft.

To uncouple the PMT from the combine harvester, carry out the same procedures in reverse order.

Hitching the equipment to a combine harvester

Set-up instructions

Make the cardan assembly by connecting the equipment to the combine harvester. Observe on the illustrations below that the cardan shaft can be assembled on the upper or lower part, according to the combine harvester model.

If it is necessary to reduce the cardan shaft length, follow the instructions on the next page.

Set-up instructions

Reducing the cardan shaft length

If it is necessary, cut similar parts of the male and female shaft as well as the protection covers. But before cutting the shaft, verify all possibilities of usage without reducing its length.

The length adjustment will be done when the distance between the equipment and tractor do not allow coupling. Proceed as follows:

• First of all, disassemble the protection covers.

• Cut the hub and the solid bar (male and female) in the desired measures. In order to do so, couple half of the cardan in the tractor and half in the equipment, placing the semi-cardans in parallel and in several operating positions. Then, determine the correct length and mark the cutting area.

• It is important to give finish working in the cut parts. For this purpose, use a filer. Soon after, remove the filing and lubricate the 'male' with a fine layer of grease.

• Decrease the length of both protective covers, using the cut tubes as a measure and clean the cut residues.

• Then, assemble the cardan shaft, according to the instructions on the next page.

• When using another tractor to work with the spreader, verify the length of the cardan shaft again.

• The chains of the protection covers should be fastened in the equipment and in the tractor, so that they will not get loose during maneuvers.

19Marchesan Implementos e Máquinas Agrícolas “TATU” S.A. PMT

Set-up instructions

NOTE The contact surface between the tube and the bar shall never be smaller than 1/3 of its total length.

Cardan assembly

When assembling the cardan shaft, it is necessary to be careful and leave the terminals on both ends aligned. The discrepancy of the terminals in 90º will cause vibrations and a greater wear on the universal joints, reducing the lifetime of the set.

Procedures to change the spacing

Set-up instructions

Change the spacing in a clean, flat and firm place.

To change the spacing, use the adequate kit for the desired spacing (consult the manufacturer).

Having the kit (A, B, C, D and E) in hands, do the spacing between the chosen row units, according to the tables on pages 10 and 11.

Use the center of the equipment as a reference to displace the row units to the position that corresponds the desired spacing. The lateral nozzle carriers do not need to be changed because they are already in the right position.

To change the spacing, proceed as follows:

• Remove all the necessary parts, such as: fairings, transmission bolts, clamps and so on to replace them by the parts of the kit.

For every spacing, there is a kit of a different size. The allowed spacings between the row units according to frame width can be checked on pages 10 and 11.

Adjustments and operations

Lateral transmission

The transmission system uses a cardan shaft with friction discs and a fuse bolt (Clutch). The fuse bolt must be changed for another one when broke.

The clutch adjustment must be done according to the instructions on page 38.

A high speed of the chains on the row may break the stalk, therefore losing the corn cobs and accumulating straw. This rotation can be adjusted by changing the sprockets for

a perfect adjustment to your farm. The lateral transmission is used

to change the rotation of the crop rows of the equipment. The PMT leaves the factory with a Drive shaft (A) with 21 teeth and a Driven shaft (B) with 24

teeth. This adjustment may change according to the table on the next page.

To change the sprocket , remove the la te ra l cover by loosening the knobs (C).

Remove the bol t (D) that locks the sprocket to the axle and withdraw the sprocket, using the bolts (E) that can be found on the components box.

Place the chosen sprocket on its place and put the bolt (D) again.

After assembling the sprockets check the chain tension, which is adjusted by sliding the tightener (F) until the desired tension.

The chain must not work very loosely. We recommend a small clearance of about 1 cm on its center, as it will bring a greater durability and will avoid its heating.

Release the tightener (F) until the point that is possible to change the sprockets.

The lateral chains lubrication is automatically done by an exclusive system composed by a pump, flow rate adjustment tap, reservoir and hoses. This system reduces the heating, since it decreases the abrasion caused by friction, therefore increasing the lifetime of the chains (see page 35).

Sliding blades

The sliding blades (A) are positioned on the base of the gathering chains (B) and are responsible to remove the cobs from the culm as they are pulled downwards by the pulling rollers (see page 24) without damaging the corn grains. These blades can be adjusted anytime on the harvest so the opening can be adequate to the corn stalks and cobs.

The right blade (C) has a bolt (D) to adjust the tightening.

The adjustment of the left blade must be done by tightening or loosening the nut on the bolt (E), in a way that the blade can be moved using your hands, but it must not be too loose to the point of suffering vibrations.

Always let the blades with a wider opening (at least 5 mm) near the transmission box.

The blades must be as tighter as possible, with no restriction on its moviment.

Adjustments and operations

Assembly of the roller tip

When assembling the tip (A) of the roller, be sure that there is the minimum clearance possible between the tip and the roller (B). Then, check the tip tightening to see if the roller is locked. If that happens, use the adjustment shims.

The rollers must turn freely by using your hands.

The tip of the smaller roller has a left thread.NOTE

28 Marchesan Implementos e Máquinas Agrícolas “TATU” S.A.PMT

Adjustments and operations

The cleaning scrapers (D) are used to avoid that impurities get around the pulling rollers. These scrapers must be adjusted so that they are as close as possible from the rollers. To do so, loosen the bolts (E) and adjust it to a minimum distance of 1 mm from the fins through the whole extension of the rollers.

Pulling rollers

Cleaning scraper

The pulling rollers (A) were developed to remove the culms and a good amount of the straw from the cobs, therefore providing a smaller volume of straw on the combine harvester track system and giving a greater income to the equipment.

These pulling rollers have unaligned tips to avoid any bushing.

Loosen the bolts (B) and pull the rollers to remove them. During assembly, check the position of the fins, as they must be unaligned (check the detail on page 27).

The small roller has a rotor (C) with left thread on its tip, therefore it is necessary to turn it clockwise to disassemble it.

Gathering chains and tighteners

Adjustments and operations

The chains of the harvesting rows leave the factory adjusted, but it is necessary to verify them periodically due to the natural friction wear during the job.

To adjust the chain, the tips must be in transport position.

In order that the chains perform a great job until they are replaced, we recommend to carry out the tension adjustment.

The gathering chains (A) are used to transport the corn cobs to the augers.

The gathering chains (A) are adjusted through the adjustment spindle (B). Do not apply excessive pressure to the tighteners in order to not compromise the lifetime of the chains, springs and bearings. A practical way to adjust the chains is by tightening the adjustment spindle (B) until the spring starts to get pressure and then tighten for about 10 mm on its length.

The chain must not be too loose, as it may escape from the sprockets. If that happens, tighten the tightener a bit more.

After adjusting the pressure, tighten the counter nut (C).

Central and lateral fairings

Adjustments and operations

The central (A) and lateral (B) fairings are supplied in several sizes for the several spacings in a harvest.

When changing the spacing, place the fairings in a vertical position and detach them.

The lateral fairings (B) are projected to avoid loss of cobs or that any object get stuck and cause bushings.

The nozzles have the function to direct the corn stalks to the gathering rollers. The equipment leaves the factory with the same height adjustment of the central (A) and lateral (B) nozzles.

Adjust the height of the nozzles depending on the type of soil, the used combine harvester and the working necessity.

To adjust the height of the nozzles, lift or lower the bolt (C) to the best condition regarding the harvest.

The tip of the nozzles has rollers (D) to not let the corn plants fall on the lateral nozzles and if the planting is not proper aligned/not with the correct spacing.

For harvests where the corn is more fallen, we recommend using the fairing tips in the lowest position. Check if the rollers are properly aligned to the soil to avoid damaging or breaking the tips when they touch the ground.

Auger

Adjustments and operations

The auger (A) is deeper and works with less rotation to not throw the cobs outside the equipment and to not damage the cobs, as it would damage the corn grains.

The auger (A) must be adjusted in a vertical position and can be displaced according to the necessity and to the operational conditions of the havest.

Between the auger and the back plate there is a minimum clearance of 10 mm.

The auger height is adjusted through the bearings (B) on the sides of the frame.

The auger leaves the factory with a 51-teeth sprocket.

Auger adjustment

If a greater speed on the auger is needed, a 59-teeth sprocket can be found on the components box.

Adjustments and operations

Operations - Important points

• Retighten nuts and bolts after the first day of work. Check the conditions of pins and cotter pins. Then, retighten every 24 hours of service.

• Carefully observe the lubrication intervals.

• The tension of the transmission and gathering chains must be checked every 50 hours.

• The tension of the gathering chains is maintained by the tighteners with squared tubes. Check every 50 hours.

Safety clutches of the row units:

• The clutch is with the cardan shaft and has a fuse bolt that must be replaced if broken.

• The clutches are installed on the factory with maximum torque and must not be re-adjusted.

• The auger torque limiter is fixed.

• Cleaning plates of the pulling rollers.

• To avoid winding, the distance between the plate and the pulling roller must be the smallest possible. This distance must be adjusted by loosening the bolts on the plate. (See page 31).

• Maximum distance between the plate and the blades of the pulling rollers: 1 mm. Check every 100 hours.

• To avoid damages, be sure that no blade is touching a plate after the adjustments.

• To do so, turn the pulling roller manually.

• As previously stated, the PMT corn head has several adjustments, but only the local conditions can determine its best adjustment.

Maintenance

To reduce the wear caused by friction between the moving parts of the equipment, it is necessary to carry out a proper lubrication, as instructed below:

• Be sure about the lubricant quality, regarding its efficiency and purity and avoiding the use of products contaminated by water, earth and others.

• Clean the grease fittings with a cloth before inserting lubricant and replace the defected grease fittings.

• Lubricate the frontal bearings of the rollers every 10 hours; lubricate the other lubrication points every 50 hours.

Lubrication

Any maintenance must be done when the equipment is turned off; it is also recommended to unhitch the activating cardans of the equipment.

The lubrication of the transmission chains is automatic, therefore increasing its durability.

The equipment has an oil pump (A) that turns on/off with the equipment.

To increase or decrease the amount of oil on the chains (B), open or close the taps (C).

Use SAE 40 oil to fill the reservoir (D). If the reservoir runs out of oil, it may be necessary to deplete the oil row.

To do so, fill up the reservoir (D) with oil, release the oil row that comes from the reservoir on the entrance of the pump (A) to let the air leaves and then put the hose again on its place. By now, the oil must falls by gravity.

NOTE Lubricate the pump activation (E) with grease.

NOTE

Gearbox maintenance

• Follow stricly the lubrication intervals on the different points of the equipment.

• It is recommended to change the grease while the equipment is still hot, so it is easier to remove the old grease.

• We recommend using Mobil Mobilux EP 0 grease. (Amount of grease per gearbox: 2 kg).

• It is very important to not mix different types of grease in order to not cause damages and premature wear.

During the first days and every 200 hours of service, inspect the lubricant level inside the gear boxes (A), which must

reach a level from 3 to 4 cm of height for the perfect functioning of the system.

• Clean up around the plug (B) and then remove it, placing a stick on the hole to check

if the grease it at the recommended height.

• Change the grease every 3 years, every 1200 hours of service or every 2,500 harvested hectares, whatever happens first.

• To change the grease, remove the bolts (C) and the lower lid (D) of the box. Then, remove all the grease, put the lid back again and introduce the new grease through the plug (B).

NOTE

ATTENTION Lubr icate the po ints shown above and al l grease fittings as well.

Maintenance

The slip clutch is designed to slip, absorb operation loads and to protect the drive shaft. It is factory fitted with a specified torque, in order to protect the combine harvester and the equipment.

Before starting the assembly, be sure that the metering box shafts are clean, without any ink and dirt. To facilitate the assembly, apply some grease in the grooves of the shaft. Do not assemble the cardan shaft without its protection cover.

To adjust the slip clutch, tighten the bolts (A) from the compression spring, giving half turns at a time.

The slip clutch must be checked periodically and adjusted to compensate the friction of the set. The discs (B) have a thickness of 5 mm when they are new. Replace them as soon as they get to 1.5 mm. If the equipment stays inative for a long period or in a humid place, carry out the verification on the next page to be sure that the discs and flanges are not oxidized. Things that must be checked weekly in the slip clutch discs: the presence of oil or grease and wearing/humidity that may cause corrosion of the discs.

Add or remove links

Whenever it is necessary to increase or decrease the length of the chain, check that the link clip (A) must always have its opening turned to the opposite side (opposite turning direction of the chain).

Chains maintenance

The clearance between the activation chains of the equipment must be checked every 50 service hours or at least once a week.

When wear occurence in the chains is perceived, replace them. To remove them, release the tightener that stretches the chains, as shown on page 20.

After assembling a new chain, adjust the clearance and press it using your thumb on the central point of the distance between the sprockets to check if the clearance is excessive.

During offseason, remove all the activation chains of the equipment, wash them with kerosene or diesel oil and store them deeped on oil inside a container until the next crop.

The equipment must be turned off when carrying out any type of maintenance.
