Through process of elimination and what we thought would be the best topic in terms of a documentary, we came to a decision of three possible subjects:

• Obsessions• Social media• Technology

Narrowing down

ObsessionsObsessions is a possible topic of ours. We chose obsessions as this is quite relatable to the target

audience we want to be aiming our documentary at (teenagers and middle aged adults). The ideas of

obsessions we had in mind to discuss were things such as celebrities, models, exercise, eating (disorders) and

technology for teenagers, and addictions such as smoking, alcohol and working for adults. This gives us a lot of things to talk about for our documentary, however it could be hard to get relevant footage as people might

not want to tell us or let us film them discussing their obsessions as it could be personal or embarrassing.

Social Media

Social media is also another possibility for what to do our documentary on. We also chose social media

as a possible subject because it can be applied to our target audience (teenagers being obsessed with it and adults complaining about the websites with it

such as their children being obsessed). Social media plays a big part in society now, it’s a current matter and it’s increasing rapidly worldwide, so it's a good topic to discuss as it’s happening as we speak. Also as it’s happening to this current date, people might be more interested in a current topic in comparison

to one that's not really occurring anymore.

Technology

Technology also plays a big part in society now, and it’s rapidly growing and advancing. This topic could be discussed positively and also

negatively. Our documentary could include the opportunities and advantages that technology

has given to us, but also the problems (bullying) and the issues it has raised, such as do we rely too much on technology? The topic technology also applies to our target audience

which makes it a good topic to discuss.

Final topic choice

We have decided to choose 'SOCIAL MEDIA' as the topic for our documentary opening.

We thought of some strengths and

weaknesses of the topic in order to come to this final decision…

Strengths• Social media is a current and ongoing theme involving a wide range of

people. This means that in our documentary, we can recognise both teenagers' and adults' opinions on the use of social media, and discuss the argument that social media has become too predominant in modern day society. This has created the controversy which will become the basis of our documentary. Our documentary will therefore focus on the wide range of opinions people have about social media.

• This topic also allows us to focus on many different areas of social media. For instance, we can discuss how it can have educational and social benefits. On the other hand, some people argue it can be dangerous due to serious factors including cyber-bullying and online grooming, as well as being addictive to many teens.

• As the topic of social media is so broad, we can use a psychologist for our expert interview, to investigate opinions about social media and the psychological implications of why we use it so often. We could also use college counsellors to find more detail about people's issues with social media- including sensitive topics like bullying.

• As well as this we can use a computer technician who will be familiar with the platforms of social media.

Weaknesses

• Within the college grounds especially, opinions may be quite biased as the majority of students are involved in social media, therefore we will have to widen our vox-pops in order to find an alternative opinion.

• Also the subject is so wide that we will have to find a way to narrow it down.
