Ideal Indian School Doha – Qatar NEWSLETTER The 73 rd anniversary of the United Nations was celebrated on 24th October 2018. The programme titled ‘Stand with Refugees’ was organized by the Department of Social Science. A mock session of UNSC was conducted where Libyan crisis was discussed. The event also included a presentation on refugee crisis and a documentary on human rights. During the programme the students explained about some of the agencies including WHO, UNICEF, FAO and IMF run by the United Nations Organizations. This helped in enhancing awareness about the UN organizations. The 73rd anniversary of the United Nations was celebrated on 24th October 2018. The programme titled ‘Stand with Refugees’ was organized by the Department of Social Science. A team comprising of 38 students along with five faculty members of IIS visited Malaysia from 16th January to 21st January 2019 to provide holistic education and opportunities to students t o deve lop t he i r interpersonal skills. They visited various places including Royal Selangor Pewter Factory, Harrison

Chocolate Boutique, K L Bird Sanctuary, Kuala Gandah Elephant Conservation Centre, Firefly Resort Park, Jadi Batik Gallery, Petronas Towers, National Monument, Putra Jaya and Independence Square. Students from the Girls Section participated prominently in the programme.

Students of Ideal visited INS TARANGINI, an Indian Training Ship, at Hamad Port on 10th December 2018. It was part of an initiative aimed at instilling the spirit of adventure among students. The students explored the various functions of the ship as facilitated by the Indian Navy officials. The visit was organized by the Embassy of India in Qatar.

VISHWA HINDI DIVAS

Students from Girls’ Section participated in the competitions held on the occasion of Vishwa Hindi Divas, on 10th January 2019 at Birla Public School. This programme was promoted by the Government of India in order to popularize Hindi language. Aisha Siddiqua of class X F won the 3rd position in the Essay Writing Competition.

Constitution Day

The school observed the Constitution Day of India with fervour and zeal on 26th November 2018. A special morning assembly was organized to commemorate the day. Principal Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali spoke on the occasion. Speeches were delivered to highlight the efforts of Dr B R Ambedkar whose initiative went a long way in framing the Constitution. The preamble of the constitution was read out in all the classes. Various competitions including essay writing and quiz were conducted. A documentary on Dr. Ambedkar, the architect of Indian Constitution, was also shown.

EMPOWERMENT OF WOMEN: INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

As part of the International Women’s Day celebration, IIS organised a workshop for the students of class X and XII. Resource persons from Turner and Townsend, Mr Willam Augustt (Associate Director) and Ms. Rajini Rajendran (Senior Quantity Surveyor) enlightened the students on various career opportunities for women in the construction field. The workshop provided an insight into the dimensions of empowerment of women.

PUBLIC CLEANING AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Municipal Control Department organized a painting competition from 17th February to 14th March 2019.

The purpose of the event was to create awareness about the importance of protecting our environment. Students from Girls’ Section participated actively in the event.

Distribution Of Hall Tickets

IIS distributed hall tickets to the students of class X and XII during a function held at the school. Speaking on the occasion, the Principal Mr. S y e d S h o u k a t h A l i encouraged the students to believe in hard work and face examinations with self-c o n f i d en c e . H e a l s o explained the latest changes in the examination procedures as highlighted by the CBSE.

Right to Education

The Right to Education campaign by the Ministry of Education, Govt. of Qatar was inaugurated on 25 October 2018, at Hamad Bin Jassim Hall, Doha. Teachers including Mr. Shamim Sheikh, Asst. Headmaster of the Junior Section, Mr. Pushparajan and Ms. Binu Jacob participated along with the students including Varsha Kalyani, Maria Liz James, Alwin and Ashwin. The agenda of the programme was to create awareness in the society and in the school about the key human rights of the students that has power to transform lives, potentially around the world. Students can also join the campaign by following Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram until April 2019 using the hash tag # Right 2 Education_qa, # Right to Education campaign, # Why Qatar Educates.

Discussion Forum 2018 Ms Khatija T.C, Ms Sandhya Sekar, Ms Glory Thomas, Mr Anwar Sadath, Mr Sajid and Mr Masood represented IIS at the Inter-school Teachers’ Discussion held at Shantiniketan Indian School, Doha, on 13th October 2018. Ms Sandhya Sekar was one of the Panel Speakers. The topic discussed was ‘Our Children Deserve More’.

SPORTS DAY

The 34th Annual Sports Meet, held on 3 December 2018, was attended by about 1200 students. Mr. Hemanth Kumar Dwivedi, First Secretary at the Embassy of India was the chief guest at the event. The guests of honour included Mr. Hassen Murteda Al Sharshani, Sports specialist at Sports Affair Department of Qatar Olympic Committee and Mr. Azim Abbas, Cha i rman of I nd ian Spor t s Committee. The event in c luded var ious programmes including aerobics by the students of Girls’ Section. Shivani Thakur, Head girl and Adeeba Fathima, Assistant Head Girl led the girls’ march past. Twayyiba Naseem, Sports Secretary of girls welcomed the gathering. The Chief coordinators of the programme were Mr. Azam Khan, Vice Principal of Boys’ Section, Ms. Sherley De Sales, Headmistress of KG Section and Mr. Durairajan, Head of Physical Department. The Girls’ Section systematically organized the prelims to identify the best sports students to participate in the finals. Champion House from Girls’ Section was Blue house, headed by housemistress Ms. Biji Mathai. The first prize for March past was bagged by the Red house headed by housemistress Ms. Masrat Jehan. Future Education and its Impacts

The first Intra School Discussion Forum of IIS was inaugurated on 27 October 2018. The discussion highlighted the importance of technology in teaching and learning process and the role of technology in student learning abilities. The participant speakers shared their views on how classrooms can be better equipped with learning devices and software-based teaching programmes. Mr. Shamim Sheikh, Assistant Headmaster of Junior Section moderated the discussion and conducted the forum. Ms. Sandhya Sekar facilitated the programme by coordinating with the participants.

National Integration Day / Unity Day

IIS Observed National Unity Day on 31st October to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel, the first Home Minister of independent India who was instrumental in keeping India united.

The main objective of the programme was to encourage all the people to come together for developing a better nation and to promote national integration.

A special assembly was conducted in the morning and a pledge was taken by the students led by Shivani Thakur, Head Girl. The Department of Physical Education organized a run for unity which was flagged off by the Principal, Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali. The teachers and students took part enthusiastically. Essay Writing and Poster Designing Competitions were held for students of class VIII to X and prizes were given to the best 2 posters and 3 essays.

Children’s Day

IIS celebrated Children’s Day on 14th November 2018 commemorating the birth anniversary of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister of India. A special assembly was organized in the Girls’ Section. Teachers spoke about the life and contribution of Jawaharlal Nehru. A fun filled programme was organized in the Girls’ Section by the teachers. Various competitions for different classes were held including Drawing and Colouring, Origami, Face Painting, 3D out of Waste, Henna Design on paper, and Rangoli Design on paper. Prizes were given to the winners of various competitions.

Youth Forum Contest

Students of Ideal Indian School excelled in the Youth Forum contest organized by Youth Forum, a Socio-Cultural Organization in Qatar on 30 November 2018. Our students participated in various competitions and won prizes in Quran memorization, Quran Recitation, Quiz, Debate and Collage. IIS emerged the overall runner up.

Qatar National Sport Day

Ideal Indian School celebrated Qatar National Sport Day with a wide range of sports and fitness activities on 12 February 2019. Friendly matches of football and volleyball for classes VII and VIII were held in the main playground.

VOICE OUT: LITERARY CLUB

As part of literary activities, Poem Recitation Competition was conducted for the students of class VI by Ms. Ryhanath on 20 December 2018. The judges were Ms. Premlatta Selwyn, Ms. Rejula Sadath and Ms. Masrat Jehan.

Humorous Speech Competition was held for the students of class IX on 30th January 2019, by Ms. Ronnie Elizabeth. The Judges were Ms. Zemina Sulfikkar, Ms. Deanne and Ms. Suseela.

Spell bee was conducted by Ms. Rejula Sadath for the students of class VII on 18 February 2019.

PICNIC: A DAY OF FUN AND FROLIC

Ideal Indian School organized picnic for students of various classes during the academic year 2018 to 2019. Students from classes V to VIII visited Angry Bird World Amusement Park. Students of IX and XI visited Aspire Park in January 2019. The teachers too were taken for a merry trip to Aspire on 25th March 2019.

QATAR NATIONAL DAY

Ideal Indian School celebrated Qatar National Day on 18th December 2018 with colourful programmes including Cultural activities. Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali, Principal congratulated H.H the Amir Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al- Thani and all the citizens of Qatar on the occasion and praised the vision of His Highness and the Qatar government for the development, progress and prosperity achieved by the

country. Students from the Girls’ Section participated in the performance featuring the rich cultural heritage of Qatar. Ms. Padma Ramaswamy, Vice Principal of Girls’ Section proposed a vote of thanks. About 550 students of the school participated enthusiastically in the National Day celebrations organized by the Ministry of Interior at Lusail Sports Arena. Students from the Girls’ Section participated in the activities including the thematic parade, song about Qatar and dance performances on the occasion. The school bagged the second position among 18 schools.

THREADS OF YARN

The 34th Annual Day of the school was held on 9 November 2018 with a thematic focus entitled ‘Threads of Yarn’. The Chief coordinators of the Annual Day were Ms. Shobana Menon, Vice Principal of Junior Section and Dr. Nazima Bi, Headmistress of Girls’ Section.

The event featured cultural performances including international, folk, western, fusion and contemporary dances, songs, musical and multilingual dramas by the students. The event was attended by distinguished personalities including Mr. Abdullah Muhammad Mahmoud Abdul Raheem Al Mulla, Head of Cultural Department at FANAR, Mr. Parvez Khan, EGM Investment and Strategy at Commercial Bank and Ms. Shruthi Purushotham, Third Secretary of Education and Culture at the Embassy of India. Dr. Hassan Kunhi M P, President of IIS along with Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali, Principal of IIS and Heads of Sections graced the occasion.

Principal presented the annual report of the school. Meritorious students were felicitated for their outstanding performance in CBSE examinations. Long and dedicated services of the staff were honoured on the occasion.

Farewell

IIS organized a grand farewell to the outgoing batch of class XII. Students of class XI gave a warm welcome. Principal, Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali and Vice Principal, Ms. Padma Ramaswamy spoke on the occasion. Students of class XII presented their reflections on their life and experiences at IIS. The students of outgoing batches were presented with mementos as a token of love and appreciation. Cultural programmes and games were organized by the students of class XI. Students were honoured with coveted titles on the occasion. LEAD THE WAY: A conclave for educators

A special programme sponsored by Aditya Birla Educational Trust India was attended by teachers from IIS at Birla Public School. The aim of the programme was to bring together the educators from the various Indian Schools of Doha and to focus on the topic ‘Technology and the Teacher’. The key note address was delivered by HE P Kumaran, Indian Ambassador to Qatar. The special address was given by Ms. Neeraja Birla, Founder and Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Education Trust. The Panel Discussion was moderated by Mr. A P. Sharma, Principal, Birla Public School, in the group discussion entitled ‘SKILL or CONCEPT - What is more important in a child’s educational journey?’, was attended by Mr. Azam Khan , Vice Principal, Boys’ Section, Dr. Nazima Bi, Headmistress of Girls’ Section, Ms. Khatija, Assistant Headmistress of the Boys’ Section, Mr. Shamim Shaikh, Assistant Headmaster, Junior Section and Mr. Balasubramanian from the department of Social Science.

Parent Teacher Association

As an initiative of the Principal, Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali, Ideal Indian School introduced PTA for the first time. Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Shoukath Ali highlighted the working patterns of the PTA. An executive committee of the association was elected during the occasion. The office bearers include Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali, Chairman, Mr. Yasir Abdulla, President, Mr. Aliyar Mohammed,

Secretary, Ms. Zemina Sulfikkar Secretary, Mr. Nuamen Ismail, Treasurer, Mr. Noufal, Treasurer, Mr. Shabeer Abduty and Mr. Shakeel Ahmed, Cultural Affairs.

A sixteen-member management committee was also formed. The PTA aims to work towards the growth and progress of the school with the students and education as the prime focus.

REPUBLIC DAY OF INDIA

Ideal Indian School celebrated the 70th Republic Day of India with enthusiasm, Mr. Syed Shoukath Ali, Principal, hoisted the national flag. The school marching band was inaugurated on the occasion. Subject toppers of CBSE were honoured. Guides were felicitated for their outstanding service. Students from Girls’ Section gave speeches highlighting the importance of the context. The Embassy of India organized special reception to mark the day. Dignitaries in-cluding, HE Jassim Saif Ahmed Al Sulaiti, Minister of Transport and Communication, HE Yousuf Mohammad Al-Othman. Mr. Fakhroo, Minister of Administrative Develop-ment Labour and Social Affairs and Mr. Ahmed bin Twar Al Kuwari, Vice Chairman of Qatar Chamber attended the programme. The programme hosted by Indian Ambassador, HE. P. Kumaran, was also attended by Chief of Protocol, HE. Ibrahim Fakhroo, Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, HE Ali Ib-rahim Ahmed, members of diplomatic corps, representatives of different Socio Cul-tural Organizations and prominent Indian personalities. Students from various sections of Ideal Indian School participated actively in the programmes reflecting the cultural diversity of India.

PATRIOTIC SONG CONTEST BY QMASS

Qatar Mahe Souhrida Sangamam (QMASS), a Socio Cultural Organization of the Indian State expatriates from Mahe and regions of Malabar in Kerala organized an Inter School Patriotic Song Competition for the students of the Indian Schools in Doha on 15th February 2019. Students from Girls Section of IIS bagged the first position in the competition.

Ek Bharat- Shreshta Bharat Bhasha Sangam Following the directives of CBSE, ‘Ek Bharat-Shreshta Bharat Bhasha Sangam’ was conducted where the lingual diversity of India was highlighted. Girls in typical costumes introduced the states with a few lines in the local language. This enabled the students to understand the uniqueness of each state and the language spoken there.
