Ideal&Co – Living Heritage* is a 100% Portuguese brand created in 2012 by designers

Rute Vieira and Jose Lima, whose aim is to reinterpret, preserve and share the beauty of

what is genuine and Made in Portugal.

The project is the second life of tannery “Curtumes Ideal” found in the 60’s by Rute’s

grandfather and follows a family tradition.

One of the �rst tan clusters were settled in Alcanena.

The royal charter granted the right for the manufactures to use royal arms symbol at their

gates.

With ecological and social concerns, and passion for the

materials and portuguese expertise, Rute e José started

the Ideal & Co presenting a collection of handbags and

acessories produced by artisans from Natural Park of Serras de Aires e Candeeiros.

With a passion for bicycles, José Lima with only 16 years, started working in a bike shop were he made is �rst design

work for a bicycle’s company. This job also granted him �nancial independence.

He worked there until �nish the university degree in Fashion

Design and Marketing

In 1935, with only 14 years, Antonio started selling leather

riding his only bicycle. Two years later, in order to keep up with

demand, he bought a Citroën van. Because he was only 16 years old

and didn’t had a license, his brother-in-law became his �rst employee to drive him around

buying and selling.

Our artisans descend from a line of experienced men that hand craft leather pieces to be used

by horse troops and hunters.

Working only with the best leather, the artisans craft manually each and every piece resulting in

unique works that they sign individually.

Vegetal tanning is the most ancient method of tanning and nowadays still the one that is more

environmentally friendly because it uses only vegetable products.

With the arise of chromium tanning, increasingly

fewer tanneries remain loyal to the process because it takes comparatively more time, increases the leather prices and limits the

production.

Believing that quality and environmental awareness play an important part in our future,

we trust the ability of the men that for more than 60 years master the vegetal tan.

LEATHER ORIGIN

All our leathers are a sub product of the food chain. This means we do not kill the cow to take

advantage of the leather only.

The leather is purchased on the best slaughter houses on the north of the country, known to produce the best meat due to the selective feeding and perfect conditions for breeding.

We do believe the skin is the ID of the animal´s way of life, making sure that all the cows are

healthy and well treated.

VEGETABLE TANNING

Vegetal tanning is a natural process so it does not use resins or synthetic inks.

Due to its low capacity of hiding imperfections, the leather needs to be the most clean and

smooth as possible.

If some kind of scar shows, is guaranteed to be from rubbing on a tree or an insect’s bite.

Traditionally, the shoulder area is considered the premium one for bags production.

Is the softest and cleanest area of the hide, presents beautiful veins and has less scars than remaining parts.

The dyeing process consist in staining the leather throughout the middle. In case of scratches the

leather won’t loose colour.

The painting process consist in staining the leather

exclusive in the surface. In case of scratches, it will

evidence the colour contrast with the undyed leather

interior.

Is the top layer of the hide, stronger and long lasting, exhibiting all the beautiful and natural imperfections. Breathable, will absorb the

oils and dust throughout time developing a beautiful patina that will tell the bag’s story. It’s the more noble and best layer for bags

manufacturing. Naturally, it’s also the more expensive.
