Music at the Turn of Century A 19th-Century Music Reader JOSEPH KERMAN, Editor

The focus of this collection, essays originally published in the journal 19th- Century Music, is upon modernism in relation to its immediate heritage. Major composers whose reflections on the past come under consideration include Debussy, Mahler, Schoenberg, Stravinsky, Bartok, and Ives, while older composers such as Liszt and Wolf figure as precursors of modernist

harmony and sensibility. Some essays deal closely with the new musical

languages that evolved in that era; others deal with reception and perfor- mance issues. Many of them bring together insights from various subdisci-

plines to achieve a richer kind of composite scholarship than is available to traditional musical studies.

Studies in the Creative Process

I EWIaSr LOCKWODII

Beethoven's extensive sketchbooks (which total over 8,000 pages) and the

autograph manuscripts, covering several stages of development, reveal the

composer systematically exploring and evolving his musical ideas.

Through close investigation of individual works, Lewis Lockwood traces the

creative process as it emerges in Beethoven's sketches and manuscripts. Four

studies address the composition of the Eroica Symphony from various view-

points. The chamber works discussed include the Cello Sonata in A Major, Opus 69 (ofwhich the entire autograph manuscript of the first movement is published here in facsimile), the string quartet Opus 59 No. 1, and the Cavatina of the later

quartet Opus 130. Lockwood's lucid analysis enhances our understanding of

Beethoven's musical strategies and stylistic developments as well as the compo- sitional process itself. 27 halftones, 100 musical examples, 10 tables $39.95 cloth

Brahms and the

Principle of

Developing Variation WALTER FRISCH

"This helpful, erudite and fluent book is indeed on an important topic.... Frisch finds room in his analysis for imaginative biographical and documentary insights."

-Times Literary Supplement

"Only rarely does a book come along which has much to offer both to the academic specialist in music and to the musically literate readership at large. ... Walter Frisch's book is a work of the sort just described. ... It should stimulate and enrich thinking about Brahms, Schoenberg, and the motivic dimension of tonal music."-Journal of Music Theory

"The topic of this book needed to be aired. ... With scholastic and historical flair, the author provides documentation and a dash of conceptual support for an intriguing inquiry."

"Bound to have a profound effect upon the thinking of all musi- cians and all those who care about music."

-Richard Swift, University of California, Davis

"Kramer has evolved the freshest approach in years to the cursed question of musical meaning, and written the truest and most helpful interdisciplinary study of music to date.... His subtle and original reinterpretations of familiar texts.. . will serve, I hope, as object lessons, inhibit- ing the sort ofpresumptuous colonizing foray we've been seeing so often of late. "

-Richard Taruskin, University of California, Berkeley

California Studies in Nineteenth-Century Music

Cultural Practice,

1800-1900 LAWRENCE KRAMER

Kramer adapts the resources of contemporary liter- ary theory to forge a genuinely new discourse about music. Rethinking fundamental questions of meaning and expression, he demonstrates how European music of the nineteenth century collabo- rates on equal terms with textual and sociocultural practices in the constitution of self and society.
