Career Record: 94-116 overall Career Big Sky Record: 62-75One of the most successful coaches in Big Sky football history is now an Idaho State Bengal. Mike Kramer was hired to be the Bengal’s 25th head coach in program history on Nov. 22, 2010. Since being given the charge to rebuild the Bengal football program, ISU has made great strides on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Kramer led the Bengals to their first winning season since 2003 in 2014. Idaho State finished with an 8-4 record and a 6-2 mark in Big Sky Conference play. The of-fense rewrote the record books as it finished with 6,744 total yards and 64 touchdowns. ISU tallied 2,567 rushing yards, breaking a school record that stood since 1957. Senior quarterback Justin Arias was a finalist for the Walter Payton Award and he was a third-team All-Ameri-can and first-team all-conference. With the success of the 2014 season, Kramer finished seventh in the voting for the Eddie Robinson Award and he was awarded the Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year. Kramer is the second coach in Division I history to earn conference Coach of the Year honors at three different schools in the same league.

The football program recorded a perfect single-year APR score of 1,000 for the 2011-12 academic year and it reached an all-time high four-year score of 962 following the 2013-14 academic year. In the fall of 2012 and 2013 a record 20 players were named to the Big Sky All-Aca-demic team, breaking the record of 17 that was set by Kramer’s 2011 team. In five of the last six semesters the football program has boasted a 3.0 or higher.

In the fall of 2011, the team had a GPA of 3.04 and 51 out of the 80 student-athletes had a 3.0 or higher. Those numbers were topped in the spring when the football team had a team GPA of 3.16 and had 53 of 79 student-athletes earn a 3.0 or higher. Since Kramer took over as head coach he has had 58 players graduate as of December of 2013.

In Kramer’s first three seasons, the Bengal offense has set numerous Big Sky and Idaho State single-season record.

The Colton, Wash., native began his coaching career at his prep alma mater as a student teacher and assistant coach in 1976, helping the team to an undefeated season and the state B-11 Championship. The next year, Kramer became teacher and assistant football coach at Helena High under eventual University of Montana head coach Mick Dennehy. In 1980, upon his mentor’s departure to join the MSU staff, he was elevated to the head coaching position. His highly successful tenure - he led the Bengals to their first winning season since 1958 - was capped with a stint as the winning head coach in the East-West Shrine Game in ‘82.

Kramer’s education credentials include a bachelor of science degree from the University of Idaho, a master’s degree in physical education from Eastern Washington, and graduate studies in educational administration at Washington State University. He is an avid mountaineer with conquests of most of the tallest peaks in the Pacific Northwest including several different routes on Mt Rainier.

Spreading the Ball AroundNine different receivers caught passes against Simon Fraser and nobody had more than six receptions. Hagen Graves caught six balls for 61 yards. Josh Cook had five recep-tions for 57 yards and Williams had four receptions for 121 yards and two touchdowns. Jakori Ford, Pat Carter, Mitch Gueller, Ty Flanagan, Michael Dean and Austin Campbell all caught passes.

Williams Goes DeepKW Williams 63 yards touchdown reception was his second longest reception of his career. His longest was 72 vs. Simon Fraser in 2014.

Josh Hill, who currently plays for New Orleans in the NFL, finished his career in Pocatello with 143 receptions for 1,270 yards. Return of Manu and Jenkins After suffering preseason season ending injuries in 2015, Mario Jenkins and Taison Manu return to the field for the 2016 season. Manu enters his senior year and has been a three-year starter at strong safety. As a junior in 2014 Manu was third on the team in tackles with 110 while Jenkins led the defense with 120 tackles as a freshman. Jenkins was also named the Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year. In last weeks season opener Jen-kins had seven tackles, two for loss and Manu had three tackles. Gueller Starting Quarterback Tanner Gueller is the starting quarterback for the Bengals in 2016. As a redshirt fresh-man in 2015 he started three games and threw for 855 yards and five touchdowns. He was 92-172 with eight interceptions. Redshirt freshman Robert Kvinsland will back up Gueller. His 338 passing yards in the opener vs. Simon Fraser ranked as the 63rd best performance in ISU history. Ford takes over at RBDespite the loss of ISU’s all-time leading rusher, Xavier Finney, Jakori Ford is ready to take over as the starter in 2016. As a junior in 2015 he rushed for 450 yards on 84 carries and scored three touchdowns. He had a season-long run of 53 yards. He has three runs of 50 yards or more in his career. He had a 53-yard rush vs. Montana in 2015 and vs. Simon Fraser in 2014 he had touchdown runs of 72 and 69. Experience at inside receivers Senior KW Williams is the top returning receiver for the Bengals. The slot receiver caught 52 balls in 2015 for 684 yards and seven touchdowns. Tight end Josh Cook returns for his final season. As a junior he caught 31 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns. Williams has caught 128 passes for 1,803 yards for his career. He needs 18 receptions and 264 receiving yards to crack the Top 10 in the career record book. Cook has tallied 108 recep-tion for 1,259 yards and he needs 38 receptions to crack the Top 10 for career receptions.
