Mission StatementThe Idaho National Guard Child & Youth Programs’ mission is to provide resources to

military families and their communities while providing peer to peer experiences for the youth. We strive to educate the community in which these families live while advocating on

their behalf.

Program Goals1. Build community capacity for youth through community networking in each region of the state.2. Provide military youth the opportunity to partake in leadership roles and training.3. Maintain youth councils to ensure the voices of military youth have an outlet.4. Provide youth development opportunities on local, regional and state levels.5. Pursue Family Resiliency by training youth and their families and providing opporutnities for them to practice their resiliency skills.6. Educate the educators as to the needs of military children within their schools.

“I enjoyed serving as a CIT and JC the past 2 camps. It is hard work, but rewarding. I really enjoy helping the younger kids find

their cabins and be around for them to talk to.” ~ Brianna Blagburn, daughter,

Best PracticesMonth of the Military Child

For the first time, Idaho National Guard’s Child & Youth Programs celebrated Month of the Military Child with commu-nities across the state. The Lead Child & Youth Coordinator for IDNG and the OMK Military Liaison for Idaho were invited onto radio and local television stations to help spread the word. Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter signed a State Proclamation naming April 2012 Month of the Military Child in the State of Idaho. Schools, retirement homes, businesses, and many other community members honored April 13 as Purple UP! for Mili-tary Kids Day by wearing purple that day. Military youth participated in an art contest and the winning drawing was used to create a sticker that was handed out all month long. Military youth attended a huge kick off event at a local Boys & Girls Club where we partnered with the YMCA, 4H Robotics, Les Bois Credit Union and IDNG’s Counter Drug. Military Youth performed a live enactment of the story Giraffes Can’t Dance to the younger B&GC youth and recapped with a

discussion about accepting the differences among us.

Volunteer Roles

Teen Volunteers Spread Their Efforts:The year 2012 introduced many opportunities for the

teens to volunteer for their communities:Canned Food Drives for Local Food Banks - Packing

Boxes of Supplies for Needy Military Families - Outdoor Family Movie Night - Face Painting -

VFW Annual Easter Egg Hunt - Field of HeroesTeen volunteers have set the pace and are showing young-er youth how to volunteer and why it is so rewarding. Our leaders have joined forces with other Region 10 youth and shared at our first Region 10 Youth Symposium why

service projects are such a huge success in Idaho.

Adult Volunteers Get Connected:Adult volunteers are hard to gather regularly for training. So we now schedule conference calls to provide distance training. Chaperones at camp now have a better under-standing of what to expect and have provided some great input into making camps better. Camp is much more successful and runs smoothly because everyone is on the

same page!

“I love being in Youth Group and I love seeing the kids leaving happy.”
