PRE-CONFERENCE PROGRAMME THURSDAY APRIL 18

1. Adhesive dentistry 2k11 FULL-DAY LECTUREDr John Kanca III 9.30am–5.00pm INIS MORThis course is a must for those seeking to place the finest restorations possible with the fewest difficulties. Among the

topics covered are the principles of adhesion, including an overview of all available resin bonding systems, specific

recommendations, the best and easiest method for creating a properly wet etched dentin surface and precise

instructions. Other topics include the sealing of crown preparations, evaluation of and treatment of tooth pain and

post-operative sensitivity, placement techniques for all classes of restorations, the best use of flowable resin

composites and the truth about deep posterior restorations. Attendees will learn about current ceramics and how

best to bond to ceramic and to the tooth. They will also receive recommendations about where to use which kinds

of materials. There will be discussion of the best activation lights, whitening and things one might want to have in

one’s dental armamentarium.

2. Endodontics FULL-DAY PRACTICAL/LECTUREDr Hal Duncan 9.30am–5.00pm VERANDA LOUNGEFrom instrumentation to obturation: a trip through new innovations in endodonticsRecent developments in instrumentation techniques have advocated the use of fewer files and promisedshortened, simpler treatments. However, do these developments present a safe and predictable approachto canal shaping in general practice? The reciprocating WaveOne™ and rotary ProTaper™ file systems willbe discussed, demonstrated and used by course participants in plastic and natural teeth in order topractically assess the relative advantages of both systems. In addition, the use of novel ultrasonic aids andnew filling methods will also be discussed and practiced during the day.

This practical course is aimed at general dental practitioners and those with a particular interest inendodontics, and will introduce new innovations in endodontics and allow participants to evaluate arange of new endodontic instruments and magnification aids.

3. Componeers: an alternative to porcelain? HALF-DAY PRACTICAL/LECTUREDr Garry Heavey 9.30am–1.00pm or 2.00pm–5.30pm MORRIS SUITEThis course will demonstrate the technique for placing componeers. This is a new and versatile way to restore

anterior teeth. Cases can be completed in one visit saving on laboratory costs and surgery time. The resulting

finish is superior to free hand composite and comparable to porcelain.

Learning objectives:

The IDA’s Quality and Patient Safety Committee will once againhold clinical audit workshops, adding to the existing range of audittools available on the members’ section of the website.

Hand hygieneIn the battleagainst infection, hand hygiene isproven to be thesingle mostimportant factor. Itis internationallyrecognised as amost importantpreventive measurein infectionprevention andcontrol (HIQA,2007). Handhygiene is aprimary diseasepreventionmeasure for healthcare workers (Dental Council, 2006). Handhygiene is the responsibility of all individuals involved in theprovision of dental care in order to minimise the risk ofinfection. Raising awareness among staff and patients is a vitalfactor in ensuring compliance.

Waste management Dental surgeries inIreland are nowsubject to inspectionby the Health andSafety Authority (HSA)to check for correctsegregation, packaging anddisposal of clinicalwaste, such as sharps, swabs and othercontaminated items, liquid x-ray solutions ifin use, and properstorage anddisposal/recovery of waste amalgam. Dental practices must haverobust waste management processes in place to ensurecompliance, best practice and quality systems for the correctsegregation, packaging, transport and disposal/recovery of dentalclinical waste streams.Clinical audit workshops to promote awareness and ensurecompliance in hand hygiene and waste management will takeplace on Friday and Saturday. Current concepts in snoring and sleep apnoeaThe role of the dental profession in themanagement of snoring and sleep apnoeais well established.
