ICT is one of our most powerful tools to contrast climate change and its effect

“We all know that information and communications technologies (ICTs) have revolutionised our world... ICTs are also very vital to confronting the problems we face as a planet: the threat of climate change... Indeed ICTs are part of the solution.” - Ban Ki-moon, former UN Secretary General

Green ICT – what is it ?

REMOO 10-12 May - Venice - Italy 6 Laura Baracchi, Trust-IT Services May 12th, 2017

How green is IT?

"The global information and communications technology (ICT) industry accounts for approximately 2 percent of global CO2 emissions, a figure equivalent to aviation" - Gartner 2007

Manufacturing one PC requires 1.7 tonnes of raw materials and water and consumes over 10 times its own weight in fossil fuels [3]

What is Green ICT about? • How materials in ICT equipment are

mined/produced • Conditions in which they are

manufactured and energy in this process

• Transport to consumers • Energy required in their usage • Disposal of ICT equipment at EoL

With a decrease of emissions of just 15%, it can generate savings of €600 billion by 2020 [2]

Why ICTFootprint.eu? • H2020 EU funded Coordination &

Support Action (CSA) for 36 months start Feb 1st 2016

• Estimate of 10 million ICT-intensive SMEs in Europe

• Extensive work on carbon footprint calculation methodologies for the ICT sector by SDOs and private sector enterprises

• Lack of time & resources to tackle the problem

• Missing knowledge of methodologies • No “ready-to-use” algorithm • Unclear tangible benefits • Insufficient incentives

ICTFootprint.eu: to raise awareness and provide practical tools in ICT carbon footprint optimisation

Carbon footprint methodologies in ICT

Some methodologies are standards, others developed by voluntary initiatives as consortia of public/private stakeholders Life Cycle Thinking Three areas: Product & Services, Organisations, Cities Methodologies specific to the ICT sector focus on HW, SW, building, network, transportation… Focus on carbon footprint & energy footprint

If the same practitioner conducts an LCA for the same product or system using the same data, and the same assumptions, the choice of methodology used does not have a big impact on the results. If two different practitioners are using the same standard, the results will vary more since they may use different data and assumptions [4]

The founding model of SAT-S User interface

Simple guided questionnaire with examples If you are interested: “behind the scenes” insight about calculation is provided

The Engine Automatic calculation of carbon footprint and energy footprint Simplified Life Cycle Assessment loosely based on standard methodologies (GHG and ETSI)

Report on ICT service footprint climate change and primary energy values and graphs organised in life cycle steps and in building blocks Intuitive equivalents are presented (e.g. emissions of an average car travelling for 1 Km) to trigger more interest and take action

Conclusions

ICT needs Energy Efficiency interventions

Methodologies to calculate carbon footprint in ICT are already out there

ICTfootprint.eu is the European Initiative to raise awareness and develop a community with all relevant stakeholders

SAT-S is a first attempt to provide ICT-intensive organisations with a practical tool to position their ICT services footprint

From SAT-S to SAT-O (self-assessment for Organisations): making the tool more useful and including more complex calculations, while keeping the interface, questions and results simple
