O n Thursday, April 6th CSF hosted the 27th Annual Inner-City Scholarship Fund Dinner Gala. Staples, Inc. was honored with the Carolyn & Peter Lynch Award for their commitment to education in Greater Boston. The Catholic Schools Foundation was proud to honor their tremendous relationship with Staples, Inc. which began in 1991 with Founder, Tom Stemberg, grew under the leadership of Ron Sargent, former CEO, and will continue under the leadership of it’s current CEO Shira Goodman. “Staples is very proud of the long-standing partnership we have with the Inner-City Scholarship Fund,” said Goodman. “Our company greatly values education and supporting the ICSF is a priority, from fundraising to product donations and grants to volunteer efforts that make a difference in children’s lives.” This year's dinner, chaired by John Farina, Northeast Managing Partner of PricewaterhouseCoopers, LLP, raised over $3.3 million for the ICSF. “Because of your generosity, the lives of these kids will be changed forever through the education they receive,” said Farina. The dinner helps provide financial aid to thousands of low- income students across grades K-12 in Boston’s Catholic schools. CSF estimates it will award $8 million in scholarships and $1.5 million in program grants to schools in the 2018 fiscal year. At the event, guests heard from student speaker Januario Carreiro, a senior at Marian High School in Framingham, MA. “Thank you to the benefactors of the Inner-City Scholarship Fund. Thank you for believing in all of us and giving us the opportunity to receive a greater education,” said Carreiro. Carreiro emigrated from Brazil when he was five years old, not speaking a word of English. He has now been offered a full-ride scholarship to Duke University’s School of Engineering and was also accepted at Brown University, Swarthmore College, and Northeastern University. Guests also heard from CSF Scholar Alumnus, Jason Martinez from Central Catholic High School Class of 2012. “When Kevin Garnett won his first championship with the Celtics, he hysterically screamed into the mic: ‘Anything is Possible’. This was my reaction when I found out I received a scholarship to attend Central Catholic,” said Martinez. He went on to become the first in his family to graduate from college and now works at State Street Corporation and volunteers on the ICSF’s Young Leader Dinner Committee. Martinez challenged guests to use a new “text-to-give” program to pledge additional support to the ICSF. Guests raised an additional $117K including a $50K match from the Lynch Family and the Lynch Foundation live at the event. Next year's event will be chaired by Bill Achtmeyer, Founder and Senior Managing Director at Parthenon-EY and will take place on Thursday, April 12, 2018. ICSF Dinner Honoring Staples, Inc. Celebrating its 60th year, Marian High School opened in September 1956 when Cardinal Cushing asked the Sisters of St. Joseph to staff the building. Ever since, there has been a

presence and spirit of the Sisters of St. Joseph in the classrooms and hallways of Marian High. In 2004 a governing Board of Trustees established Marian High School, Inc. as a private, Catholic, co-educational high school independent of the Archdiocese of Boston.

The mission of Marian High School is to develop the whole person, academically, spiritually, socially, emotionally, and physically. Marian journeys with young boys and girls as they progress through their high school education and graduate as young men and women.

Since 2016, Marian High has partnered with Regis College on a Dual-Enrollment Program. It is unique in that the students take college courses as part of their schedule at Marian. These courses are taught by Marian faculty whose credentials and syllabi have been approved by the Regis College faculty committee. These credits are transferrable to any college or university. Thanks to this partnership Marian is creating opportunities for students to reduce

the cost of higher education.

Marian offers a total experience by which a student has the opportunities to advance their interests and skills, both inside and outside the classroom. With a tight-knit community, Marian faculty and staff offer an individualized experience for the students and their families.

Marian graduates matriculate to some of the best colleges and universities around the world, earning nearly $10 million in academic scholarships over the past two years. These achievements solidify Marian’s place as a premier Catholic high school in the Metro West.

STARNEWS 4 | SPRING 2017

I chose to attend Fontbonne Academy in hopes of reconnecting my relationship and spirituality with God. Due to my previous experiences with public schools, I found that being at

Fontbonne Academy was the best fit because of their core values of reverence, responsibility, reconciliation, and respect. I am thankful to receive a scholarship from the Catholic Schools Foundation (CSF) because it gave me an opportunity to attend a great school and it helped reduce the financial stress on my family so that I could focus on my academics.

I applied to the Hill Holliday internship opportunity through CSF because of my interest in marketing and graphic design. When I applied, I was still unsure of what I wanted to study in college. I saw Hill Holliday as an opportunity to explore the different aspects of marketing, so I was determined to be hired for the position. When I initially applied I did not get the position, but was the runner up. Although I was disappointed I knew that my ambition would not stop me there. When the opportunity was presented to me again, I applied. In January of 2017, I was hired as a digital strategist intern at Hill Holliday.

My experience at Hill Holliday has taught me how to balance the interests of the clients and the consumers. I did this by creating presentations that help to visualize the pros and cons

of the client’s company in comparison to their competitors. Hill Holliday exposed me to a professional work environment and allowed me to explore my personal interests in marketing and graphic design, which helped me gain professional confidence.

My goal for the future is to attend and graduate from Stonehill College and obtain my Master’s at one of the partnered graduate programs. I plan to reach my goals by applying myself in internships, working hard in school, constantly asking questions and taking notes in class. Most of all, my experience applying to, being hired, and interning for Hill Holliday has taught me what is possible when opportunity meets determination. I hope that applying this lesson to the rest of my life will result in a successful future. Thank you.
