ASK US SOMETHING ON TUMBLR

Is suicide a real problem? Will it ever even affect me? The answer is yes. One suicide occurs every 40 seconds.Almost one million suicides occur every year.

Sirens For Silhouettes is an effort by the Interact Club of SMK (P) Sri Aman to raise awareness among the community about the escalating suicide rates worldwide.

We chose “Sirens For Silhouettes” to send out our message because sirens, normally associated with ambulances and firetrucks are loud, and they send out a clear, urgent, honest message: I’m here. Let me help you. Silhouettes on the other hand, mean the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible against a lighter background, especially in dim light. This can represent many things, but we want our message to be loud and clear: We are here to help.

A walk will be held on the 7th of April, where participants will walk along a 3km route with their wrists tied to a trusted friend’s wrist, to show that no matter what obstacle may be in your way, there is always someone who can and will help you get through it. With prizes such as tickets to Sum 41’s concert on April 14th up for grabs during lucky draw, performances by Altimet, Reza Salleh and Ariff AB, along with Rina Omar as emcee, not to mention countless food and games stalls, the event is sure to be unforgettable. Don’t miss it, get your tickets from any Sri Aman interactor today!

ICCPJ HAPPENINGSProbationer’s Seminar

A Probationer’s Seminar to educate new probationers on Interact was help on the 18th of February, 2012, at SMK (P) Sri Aman.

What Probationers Had To Say:

18TH FEBRUARY 2012

I had lots of fun, and I learnt a lot of new things. I also made lots of new friends from other schools! My favourite part of the seminar was the ice breaking session. We played a few games, such as 'Blow Wind Blow' and 'Hot Seat'. My favourite game was Blow Wind Blow. We got to know each other during the ice breaking session. I also enjoyed creating an event with my teammates. I had a really good time brainstorming with my teammates. The most exciting part was presenting our event to the other Interact probationers. I also learnt more about Interact Club. Overall, the seminar was a success, thanks to all the BODs who organized it. I had a lot of fun and it is an experience that I will never forget. -Dania Kamilia Natasha

It was a fun experience as got to re-connect with old friends and make new ones as well. The seminar started at 8, when everyone had to register and be brought to the hall for the briefing of house rules and role calls for each respective school. After that we got into our groups according to colours and separated into different classes. From there, we learned about what BODs do and what it takes to be a part of the BODs. We also played "blow wind blow" which was really fun. After blow wind blow, we were separated into groups again for event planning. Each group was given a specific avenue. Mine was community service. That was fun as well as I got to know how it feels like to plan events. After event planning, we went to the hall for each groups presentation. After that the rotarian gave a speech, and I helped clean up the hall. And that was it. All in all, the seminar was really fun and I got to expand my circle of friends. I hope to attend more ICCPJ events after this :-D -Aliyyah Ausrin

Before leaving for school,I felt nervous and agitated but somehow excited for the seminar. As I reached school,I saw a lot of students from different schools talking and walking in their groups and hence made me feel like a stranger there.I joined my friends, who were also probationers in the hall waiting for the seminar to start. We sang the Friendship song as soon as the seminar starts. We were then be given a brief talk about the seminar's agenda.Later,we were divided into groups and around 9.30am,we went to our classes to start our first session, which was the ice breaking session.I made new friends who were absolutely nice and friendly. It was nice to hear their different opinions and perspective about the Interact Club.I am not to be known as a shrinking violet anymore. We were taught about the four avenues of the Interact Club and we were then separated into small groups of six.We were given a task to complete a presentation about the International Understanding.Eventhough our presentation was not selected to be presented on stage,we were happy to share our ideas and proud of our work. The seminar ended with the Interact Club anthem and we were given refreshments.Overall,I find this Interact Club probationers' seminar very educational and its worth going.-Afiqah Dharwisyah

Kony 2012 is a short film created by Invisible Children, Inc. and released on March 5, 2012. The film's purpose is to promote the charity's "Stop Kony" movement to make indicted Ugandan war criminal and International Criminal Court fugitive Joseph Kony globally known in order to have him arrested by December 2012, the time when the campaign expires.

In my opinion, social media is a fantastic tool for mobilizing the grass roots. President Obama showed the promise of this medium during his campaign, and the technology has come a long way since 2008. The Arab Spring showed us what the grass roots could do with it. In both cases, the audience had a stake in the conversation. American citizens built up a presidential candidate. The Arab Spring was a groundswell of the marginalized who wanted to participate in their own liberation. In both cases, the participants were exercising their own voice and determined the agenda.

“When activists want to help people, we shouldn't assume we know what's best for them”. The "Kony 2012" campaign is a different kind of beast. Here, the voice of the marginalized is minimized, and their agency to determine the course of their future is stripped. They become bit players in their own story with an occasional appearance. In this case, one organization set the goals and put a huge effort behind simplifying the message for mass adoption -- and that audience bit into it hook, line and sinker.

The scary part of this campaign is that it raises expectations too high. "If you care enough to send $30 and wear this here bracelet, we will go and get rid of this evil for you. Trust us," it says. The world isn't that simple or easy to fix. The campaign missed a huge opportunity to instill agency in Uganda's civil society, to encourage citizens to act on their own behalf. That would have been hugely transformative. But instead, Ugandans are left wondering, "What is this?"

The takeaway for me is that social media is a powerful tool for flattening the conversational landscape. It is imperative that we don't hijack the voice and agency of the actors we are trying to help. Instead we should use our social clout to help them realize they have a voice, and we shouldn't dare assume we know what's best for them.

So, watch the video. Do your own research and tell me what you think.

FIVE places to visit IN MALAYSIAIf your dreams are to travel the world, why not start with our very own country?

Cameron Highlands, with it’s cool, fresh, air is a welcome change from the humid weather and bustling city that makes up most of the rest of our country. Among the things you can enjoy there are: Climb up Gunung Brinchang to indulge in breathtaking views of the surrounding mountain range. It’s advised to walk up in the early mornings for a better experience and less traffic!Visit the tea plantation and the strawberry farms. The popular farms are located in and around Brinchang. Enjoy tea and scones, one of the few British traditions still alive in our country, while enjoying the cool highland air- where else in the country could you enjoy this privilege? For those who prefer outdoor activities, put on your hiking shoes and head off into the rainforest to experience something different. Don’t forget to get the services of a guide if you’re planning to go off the beaten track- it’s a whole different world out here. To top it all off, there’s a weekend night market, which is open during the weekends and

Cameron Highlands

The Portuguese, Dutch, and Chinese who came and attempted to conquer the land have all left their marks, making Malacca one of the most historical and diverse places in all of Malaysia. Experience Baba and Nyonya culture, enjoy traditional delicacies and crafts in Jonker Street, visit the Portuguese’s famous A’Famosa fort, or the Stadthuys, which is believed to be the oldest surviving Dutch building in the East, or sail along the Strait of Malacca (Selat Melaka), which was once dubbed the ‘Venice of the East’ by European seafarers. What better way to understand our national history than to be where it all happened?

Malacca

Mount Kinabalu is South East Asia's highest peak at 4,095 m- and it’s located conveniently in our own country. Within its boundaries, in Borneo, Sabah, you can find lowland rainforest of the tropical zone at its lower level, the montane oaks and fig trees, the rhododendron shrubs and wild berries of the temperate zone at its medium level, and the conifers an other alpine-like associations of the summit zone at its upper level. Where else in the world can you find a complete ecological system such as this, compacted in one small area? The best time to visit the park, especially for climbers, is during the March and April dry season.

Mount Kinabalu

The Cultural Village is located at Pantai Damai, Santubong, just 32km from the state capital, Kuching. It is the perfect place to get introduced to local culture and lifestyle. There are about 150 people living in the village, demonstrating traditional daily activities like the processing of sago and the making of handicrafts. They wear traditional costumes and also put on dances for visitors. There are replicas of buildings that represent every major ethnic group in Sarawak; longhouses of the Iban, Bidayuh and Orang Ulu, a Melanau tall-house and a Chinese farm house- and let’s face it, most of us don’t even know what these houses look like, let alone how to tell the difference, despite it being part of our country’s culture. The village also has a theatre, where you can enjoy a multicultural dance performance You can even get married at the Sarawak Cultural Village, in traditional Iban, Malay, Bidayuh or Orang Ulu style.

TEN PLACES TO VISIT AROUND THE WORLD

The Grand Canyon

The Great Barrier Reef

Angkor Wat

The Taj Mahal

The Great Pyramid

Petra

Venice

The Louvre

The Great Wall of China

New York City

The 6,000-foot-deep, 277-mile-long and 18-mile-wide canyon looks almost like an ocean, when masked by the dark. But just as you can't grasp the size of the swells without swimming, you can't comprehend the depth of the rust-colored canyon until you venture down into it—and hike rim to rim.

The Grand Canyon (Arizona, The United States)

Being the first structure ever constructed by man to be visible from space, this is certainly a must see. When you stand on the Great Wall, looking down towards the horizon, it can be hard to imagine that this was built by human hands, especially when the wall is over 5000 miles long. Construction of the wall began in 7th century BC- anything that has managed to stand the test of that much time definitely deserves to be admired.

It is a forest of skyscrapers, endless life, activity, and opportunity from Broadway and Times Square to Central Park. Admire Manhattan and the rest of the city that never sleeps from atop the Empire State Building- this city will remind you, like no other, that you only live once.

The museum contains some of the greatest masterpieces by the best artists who ever lived. While we know what the paintings look like, the feeling of seeing them housed inside this magnificent example of architecture is incomparable. Also, the museum is located in the heart of Paris, and everyone knows that Paris is the city of love- even if you’re not looking for it, you’ll definitely fall in love with the city itself.

The canal streets of Venice are truly unique in the world, and to see firsthand just how people go about their daily lives is an interesting experience. The city was built on over 100 small islands, which made travel by boat a necessity. With such easy access to sea trade routes, it is easy to see how this great city became known as an industrial center.

This huge mausoleum was built in the 1600′s at a time when most people would not have thought it possible to create such a magnificent place. While many people might think that this is one huge building, it is actually made up of many smaller structures, which all add up to make the place truly beautiful when viewed by the naked eye.

The name of this place means “city temple” and this exactly what it is. Located in Cambodia, Angkor Wat is an example of what truly marvelous structures can be created without the aid of technology. The large statues carved inside the structure itself is what most people think of when hearing the name, but seeing the great temple from afar truly is impressive.

The Great Wall of China

New York City (The United States)

The Louvre (Paris, France)

Venice (Italy)

The Taj Mahal (Agra, India)

Angkor Wat (Cambodia)

The largest living coral reef in the world is actually made up of many smaller reefs which span for over 1600 miles. The large abundance of colorful sea life make this a real hotspot for divers worldwide. If you are lucky enough to view this spectacle from the air you will see just how large this reef really is. A refreshing reminder of how beautiful the world is, this reef is definitely a must-visit.

The Great Barrier Reef (Australia)

No one really knows just who built this great city in the mountain walls. The very large entry ways which can be over 14 feet tall have inspired many tales of a city inhabited by giants. It is estimated that the city itself is well over 3,000 years old, and served many purposes over it’s ancient history. Just to stand here and see the the structures is surreal- and who doesn’t want to be in the place where they filmed Indiana Jones?

Petra (Jordan)

While all of the other pyramids have a recorded history, and are proven to serve as a tomb, the Great Pyramid’s reason for being built is largely unknown. The top of the pyramid is missing though many believe from ancient writings that it was a huge piece of gold that would shine from the horizon. The outer walls were made of highly polished stone, which make some scientists believe that it would shine bright enough at parts of the day to have been visible from orbit around the Earth itself- combine all this, and you’re left with a sight you just have to see.

EASY WAYS TO BE ANENVIRONMENTAL SUPERHERO!1. turn off your computer AT NIGHT

By turning off your computer instead of leaving it in sleep mode, you can save 40 watt-hours per day. If you don't want to wait for your computer to start up, set it to turn on automatically a few minutes before you wake up, or boot up while you're having your breakfast.

2. unplug plugs from sockets

Did you know that your electrical appliances still consume electricity even though they are already switched off? So, make a habit of unplugging electrical appliances and not just turning them off.

Before you throw something away, think about if someone else might need it. As they say, your trash might be someone else’s treasure. Either donate it to a charitable organization or post it on a web site designed to connect people and things. Another alternative is turning your old things into new things! A good example can be found here: http://bit.ly/oldthingsintonewthings where they turned a cheese grater into an earring stand. Search the internet for ideas, or simple tune in to your creative side- plus, you don’t only save the environment, you save money!

3. ONE MAN’S TRASH IS ANOTHER man’s treasure

Each day, your local mall or market uses thousands of plastic bags a day. They are not biodegradable, and are making their way into our oceans, and subsequently, the food chain. Innocent turtles (which by the way, are endangered) eat the plastic bags and choke or suffocate. Plastic bags also don’t decompose, therefore taking up landfill space. Stronger, reusable bags are inexpensive and environmentally friendly. Many supermarkets and such are taking the initiative to even sell these bags at their stores so they don’t use so much plastic- buy one. The turtles will thank you. Every time you use a plastic bag, think of this:

4. STOP USING PLASTIC BAGS

5. USE REUSABLE BOTTLES

Nearly 90% of plastic water bottles are not recyclable, instead taking thousands of years to decompose. Buy a reusable container instead. They not just help reduce the use of plastic, they are also available in countless pretty designs and colours.

There are several tales of how Zeus obtained his rule in the heavens- one being that he obtained it by luck of the draw, drawing the heavens while his brother Hades became god of the underworld and Poseidon, god of the seas.

Another is that he conquered his father Cronus, who was greedy and would eat his own children birthed by Rhea (Zeus’s mother). Finally, she decided to trick Cronus and swap the young baby for a rock in a blanket when Zeus was born. He later returned to defeat his father to save his siblings, who were still living within his father’s stomach.

Ancient Greeks believed that Zeus was the creator of weather; creating droughts, heavy rain, and storms.

Some of Zeus’s children are: Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Hermes, Persephone, Dionysus, Perseus, Helen, Minos, Ares and Hercules.

Zeus was the 6th child and youngest child of Cronus and Rhea.

Zeus is also known by such aliases as "the Rain God" and "the Cloud Gatherer".

GREEK MYTHOLOGYGreek mythology, Is an interesting anthology. Of the greek gods and goddess,Who they say were so modest.

There was Zeus the god of the sky, Ruler of the Olympian gods and Mount Olympus. He was said to control weather and rain,Bring mercy, justice and pain.

Poseidon was the god of the sea, Who married Amphitrite. His greatest weapon was his trident,With a shake can make people frightened.

Hades was known as the god of the dead,He was also god of wealth so they said. Those who entered the underworld down below, Would never be released or let go.

Athena was the goddess of wisdom, Who used her knowledge to rule the kingdom. She was known as Athena the great, And in battle she was fierce and brave.

There was Aprohedite the goddess of love, Who looked like an angel sent from above . She was married to Hephaestus the jeweler, But she had always wanted someone cooler.

There were many other greek gods and goddess, Too many of them to name. I would tell you of their myths and adventures, But I would need another poem to explain.

“The Fault in Our Stars” follows Hazel, who has terminal cancer and is currently a living “miracle” as the newly invented drug that slows the progress of the cancer is actually working. Her mom, who is (quite reasonably) very protective, forces her to go to a Cancer Kid Support Group meeting each week, where she meets Augustus Waters. Two teenagers living with cancer and falling in love makes the perfect tragic romance, but John Green keeps the reader guessing throughout.

John Green is known for his quirky characters and the cast of “The Fault in Our Stars” is no exception. From the senile author that Augustus and Hazel fly to Europe to meet to Augustus’ friend with eye cancer, there is no lack of unique characters who are guaranteed to make you laugh. Each character offers a heartbreaking yet real look into the lives of those affected by cancer and, in some cases, the lives of teenagers in love.

The Fault In OurStars by John Green

After his friend commits suicide, smart misfit Charlie is trying to learn to "participate" in life. He befriends a group of interesting older kids who introduce him to partying, but also respect his sensitivity. In letters that Charlie writes to an anonymous stranger, he talks about his family, his friends, and his complicated, often overwhelming, feelings about growing up. Eventually, his longtime crush tells him that he "can't just sit there and put everybody's life ahead of yours and think that counts as love" and he slowly learns to be present in his life.

DOs AND DON’Ts OF SHOPPINGby Int. Aqilah Azlan

Do go shopping with a plan in mind of where you want to go and what you need to buy. You don’t want to wander around the shops aimlessly that you get tired and fed up and come away with nothing but a headache and tired feet. Try and stick to your mission.

Always buy in shops that do refunds. New clothes need to be tried on at home to check that they work with the rest of your wardrobe.

Buy the best quality you can afford. If it's a fashionable item you only intend to wear for a month or so then going cheap is fine. But if you want more classic pieces to last more than one season try to double the amount you'd normally spend, particularly on items such as coats, skirts and trousers.

When you find a shop whose sizing suits you, stick with it.

Do choose special accessories and bags. A well made leather bag or signature piece of jewelry will lift an inexpensive outfit to new heights.

Do be prepared to keep an open mind when you're shopping. Often times it's the clothes with little hanger appeal that look fabulous on, so take a few items into the changing room that you might not normally consider - a new colour perhaps, or a different skirt length for a change. There's only you in the cubicle so take a risk!

Don’t ask the opinion of shop assistants.Unlike a friend, an assistant wants to make a sale so their advice may not be impartial. Go with a friend or trust your own instinct- you know what you’ll feel most comfortable wearing.

Don’t go shopping if you’re lacking in funds. If you’re desperate for new clothes but don’t have the money to pay for them, switch some clothes with your friends- you’ll have a whole new outfit minus the cost!

Don’t buy something you already have. Before buying something, think about it- do I have something that looks similar? If you do, do you really need another item that looks the same?

Don’t go shopping when you’re already loaded down WITH LOts of bags.Shopping is tiring work when you’re traipsing up and down so make it easier with comfortable shoes, a small bag, and a lightweight coat if necessary. Also, make sure you don’t wear many layers or clothes that require a lot of bother to get in and out of.

Don’t clothes shop when you’re menstruating. You’ll feel grim enough without having to look at yourself all bloated in the mirror!

Step 1:Gather materials, and start by wrapping the hoop. You will need enough leather to completely cover the hoop starting it by going over and under (keep a strip about an inch or so long that later you will tie so it will hang). Keep wrapping the leather until you have come back to your original starting point.

Step 2:The next part is making the web. A Dream Catcher is like a spider's web. And if you are using sinew you will feel the sticky part of it.

Start by going over the hoop, then a few inches apart bring the sinew over and then under for the next loop. You do this continuously until you have a hole in the center of your web. This is when you will tie it off.

returning to work which is, well, sensible. There are several things you need to know about chalking your hair. Below are some tips + tricks along with some very

important advice for before and after…

*Tip : if you have dark coloured hair (which I’m sure most of us do) you can use white chalk first, wait for it to dry, then proceed to using any colour of your liking!

• Always brush the excess powder out after chalking each piece.• Twist the hair as you chalk. The texture from twisting makes the chalk release more pigment.• If your hair color is anything darker than blonde, you’ll NEED water. Doubling the pigment is what will help the

colors to show up on darker hair. Mist a little water on the strand with a spray bottle, then chalk it up! It won’t stain darker hair the same way it will on lighter hair.

• Soft chalk pastels can be found at any major art store. Just don’t get “soft chalk” pastels confused for oil pastels. If you’re confused, ask a sales person. Removing oil pastels would be a nightmare, not to mention, they’d feel very sticky.

• Try doing 2 colors on one strand! Really fun and looks tie-dyed!• Always wear a robe or cape and lay something down on the floor to catch the chalk dust that falls off. This stuff gets

EVERYWHERE!• It will get on your clothes during the day, so try and wear something close to the color you’re sporting.• Doing updos with chalked hair is ideal because you won’t get as much on your outfit.• Before you shower, brush with a soft, natural hair brush get out as much pigment as you possibly

can! It should come off almost all the way with brushing.• Don’t chalk your hair too often. At the end of the day, you’re using powder pigment on the ends of your hair and

that can suck up a lot of natural moisture that you need in the ends of your hair.

The best part about chalking your hair is styling it!
