Bringing Data Into the Classroom• Easy-to-use features of ICPSR’s Website in classes

– Social Science Variables Database (SSVD)– Bibliography of Data-Related Literature– SDA/xmlsda– Crosstab Assignment Builder

• Additionally, in partnership with teaching faculty, ICPSR has developed:– Short Exercises – the DDLGs– Online teaching modules– TeachingwithData.org– Other resources for students and instructors

Social Science Variables Database• Not just for researchers looking for data!• Can be used as a teaching tool, too

SDA/sdaxml• SDA: Survey Documentation and Analysis• Developed at UC-Berkeley• “Online data analysis" refers to the ability to perform statistical

analysis using special Web-based software as an alternative to downloading data into a stand-alone statistical package on your computer.

• Advantages:SDA is free – no site license requiredOnly requires a computer with an internet connectionEasy to learn – you can teach your students how to use it

in 30 minutes or less.

Data-Driven Learning Guides• DDLGs are standardized, “classroom-ready,” self-

contained teaching modules• ICPSR now offers 52 DDLGs covering a broad

range of social science topics.• DDLGs are created with 2 goals in mind:

1. To teach students about a specific course-related concept (e.g., social mobility) using real-world data

2. To teach quantitative literacy and build quantitative reasoning abilities.

DDLGs (cont.)

• DDLGs use SDA• DDLGs all follow

the same structure

TeachingwithData.org

• TwD is a portal where faculty can find resources and ideas to reduce the challenges of bringing real data into post-secondary classes.

• Readily available, user-friendly, data-driven teaching materials.

• “Data in the News”

ICPSR Summer Program in Quantitative Methods

• Instruction on the tools and practices needed to analyze data• For those with math phobia and those with advanced analysis

skills• 3-5 day workshops and 4-8 week courses• Primarily held in Ann Arbor, MI, on the campus of The University of Michigan, but some courses on other campuses also• http://www.icpsr.umich.edu/sumprog/

Summer Undergraduate Internship Program• Paid internship• Introduces students to multiple

aspects of social science research;• Includes:

supported exploration of a research query from start to finish;

"hands on" data management; focused methodological training

in quantitative research.
