Tric

Tric is undoubtedly one of the most iconic products generated by the prolific and innovative creative genius of Castiglioni brothers, great masters and fathers of the Italian design.

“Good design is not driven by the ambition to make a mark, the mark of the designer, but by the will to establish a connection with the unknown someone who will use the object designed by us, even a small connection. <...> An authentic genuine industrial designer is a team-worker who designs and creates real objects for real needs. His job is to realize mass-production objects for the community.”(Achille Castiglioni)

The purpose of Castiglioni’s objects is to serve the everyone’s everyday life. Real objects for real needs to be used in the most direct and simple way. In this spirit, early in the 60s, started the collaboration between Castiglioni and BBB, a company that since the beginning has been a protagonist for innovation and research within the industry. Interpreter of tendencies and trends of the new social scene emerging from economic boom and mass production, BBB promptly partnered with recognized exponents of the culture that promoted good design for all in response to new needs.

The folding chair Tric is inspired by a Thonet chair from the 30s, out of production at that time. Launched at ‘Inhabited Home’, a temporary exhibition that took place in Florence in 1965, with special finishing and dimensions to make it suitable to the project. The ironic name vaguely onomatopoeic, Tric, evokes the closing click of the chair and is playfully combined with the name of the table, Trac, together a folding furniture family.

Manufactured by BBB since 1975, from 2015 in the collection Icon Chairs, as an everlasting icon of Italian design.

La Tric è senz’altro uno tra i prodotti iconici generati dal prolifico e innovativo universo creativo dei fratelli Castiglioni, grandi maestri e padri del design italiano.

“Un buon progetto non nasce dall’ambizione di lasciare un segno, il segno del designer, ma dalla volontà di instaurare uno scambio anche piccolo con l’ignoto personaggio che userà l’oggetto da noi progettato. <…> Un vero industrial designer è colui che, lavorando in gruppo, progetta e realizza oggetti veri per dei bisogni reali. Il suo lavoro è produrre oggetti di grande serie per la comunità.” (Achille Castiglioni)

Gli oggetti dei Castiglioni vengono concepiti per essere destinati alla quotidianità di tutti. Oggetti veri per bisogni reali e per essere utilizzati nel modo più immediato. In questo spirito nasce, sin dagli anni ’60, la collaborazione con BBB, un’azienda che sin dalle origini si fa protagonista del ruolo chiave dell’industria nell’innovazione e nella ricerca. Interprete delle dinamiche e del gusto della nuova società, emersa dal boom economico e dalla produzione di massa, BBB affianca da subito nomi rappresentativi della cultura che promuoveva il buon design per tutti in risposta ai nuovi bisogni.

La sedia pieghevole Tric si inspira ad una sedia Thonet degli anni ‘30 uscita di produzione e di cui riprende modificando le dimensioni e finiture per renderla adatta alle esigenze di uno specifico progetto, l’allestimento della Casa Abitata a Firenze del 1965. Il simpatico nome vagamente onomatopeico, Tric, richiama lo scatto di chiusura di una sedia pieghevole e viene ironicamente ripreso dal nome del tavolo, Trac pure pieghevole, a cui verrà abbinata.

The armchair Ginevra was born from the creative genius of one of the most celebrated masters of Italian design, Achille Castiglioni. The design has been inspired by the already famous folding chair Tric, designed fourteen years before by Achilles together and his brother Pier Giacomo.

“I feel very much the relation of mutual empathy between the designer and the user. This relation is very important and I think it’s one of the guide lines of my way of working in the field of design and architecture.” (Achille Castiglioni)

Ginevra is a practical, functional, simple, basic, comfortable, easy to handle, folding armchair provided with reclining armrests. Result of an invention reinterpreting classical and elemental forms in the true spirit of the objects of Castiglioni, designed to serve the everyday life of everyone. Real objects for real needs to be used in the most direct and simple way.

In the 70s continues the prolific collaboration between Castiglioni and BBB, which consolidates its leading role in the ‘inclusive design’, as Castiglioni defined the creative process of innovation.

La poltroncina Ginevra nasce dal genio creativo di uno tra i più celebri maestri del design italiano, Achille Castiglioni. Il disegno si spira alla già celebre sedia pieghevole Tric disegnata quattordici anni prima sempre da Achille insieme e al fratello Pier Giacomo.

La Ginevra è la poltroncina pieghevole pratica, funzionale, semplice, essenziale, comoda, maneggevole, con braccioli reclinabili. Frutto di un’invenzione che interpreta forme classiche ed elementari nell’autentico spirito degli oggetti di Castiglioni concepiti per essere destinati alla quotidianità di tutti. Oggetti veri per bisogni reali e per essere utilizzati nel modo più immediato.

Negli anni ’70 prosegue la collaborazione tra Castiglioni e BBB, che consolida il suo ruolo di protagonista nella ‘progettazione integralè come Castiglioni definiva il processo creativo d’innovazione.

The 969 by Gio’ Ponti, is a re-design of the original chair already launched at the VI Triennale of Milan in 1936, as designed by the same author, one of the greatest exponent of the Italian culture of the XX century. Architect, industrial designer, artist and founder of famous magazines, played a key role to establish the international reputation of Italy in the scene of modern design and architecture. The architect who loved classicism while looking towards the future, the promoter of industrial design of the XX century who was an estimator of the artisanship.

“The architect of today <...> should learn from every artisan: learn from stonemason (shiny, polished, hammered, chiselled, flaked surfaces), learn from the carpenter, from the blacksmith, from the plasterer, from all the workers and artisans (is beautiful!). Learn how to do things with the hands. Nothing first that is not in the hands. The architect should learn also from the artisan how to love his own work, how beautiful is to make for the pleasure of making.” (Gio’ Ponti from ‘Amate l’architettura’, ‘Love architecture’-, page 111-112).

The 969 is a superb example of the classical aspiration of Ponti’s style where few singular elements compound in a unique combination: the volute of the backrest is a tribute to decoration that becomes a structural element, the lower cross underneath that unbalances the symmetry creating a tension between rule and unexpected, the triangular flared legs decreasing down and upwards. A style steeped in elegance and uniqueness.

La 969 è la rivisitazione della sedia a volute presentata nel 1936 alla VI Triennale di Milano dallo stesso Gio’ Ponti, uno dei massimi rappresentanti della cultura italiana del XX secolo. Architetto, designer industriale, artista e fondatore di famosissime riviste di settore, ha contribuito ad affermare la fama internazionale dell’Italia nella scena moderna del design e dell’architettura. L’architetto che amava la classicità guardando al futuro, il promotore dell’industrial design del XX secolo che fu estimatore dell’artigianato.

“L’architetto d’oggi <…> impari da tutti gli artigiani: impari dal marmista (le superfici lucide, levigate, a martellina, a bocciarda, a scaglia), impari dal falegname, dallo stuccatore, dal fabbro, da tutti gli operai e gli artigiani (è bellissimo). Impari le cose fatte con le mani. Nulla che non sia prima nelle mani. Impari anche, l’architetto, dall’artigiano come si ama il mestiere, com’è bello farlo per farlo.” (Gio Ponti da ”Amate l’architettura”, pag. 111-112).

La Ponti 969 esalta l’aspirazione classica del segno di Ponti in una somma di gesti unici e irripetibili: lo schienale a voluta un omaggio alla decorazione che diventa elemento strutturale, l’intreccio dei traversi inferiori che sbilancia la simmetria creando una tensione tra regola e inaspettato, le gambe a prisma triangolare svasate a ridursi verso terra e verso l’alto. Una cifra stilistica intrisa di eleganza e unicità.

The chair 940 is a design of one of the most influential architect of the XX century, Gio’ Ponti. His career spanned throughout diverse disciplines, from architecture to industrial design, art and publishing as founder of famous magazines, and helped to establish the international reputation of Italy as a hub of creativity and genius. In any of his works, Giò Ponti expressed the tension of the synthesis between classic and modern, as result of the principle that the present (the project) represents the past and anticipate the future.

“The past doesn’t exist, everything is simultaneous; there is only the present in our culture, where create the representation of the past and predict the future.”(Gio’ Ponti)

In the 30s, his work is still deeply influenced by classicism but already expressing elements and tensions of modernism. Ponti 940 chair, last version of a model already launched in 1933, is exemplary: the flared legs and the bended and curved backrest and seat recall classical harmonies retained by clean lines without allowing anything to decoration.

The sofisticated detail of the rear groove of the wood that makes unique the ending of the legs downwards as well as the sign of the taper upwards up to the minimum necessary left for the joint of the backrest. Classic elegance and modern simplicity.

La sedia 940 è stata disegnata da uno dei più influenti architetti del XX secolo, Gio’ Ponti. La sua attività si è sviluppata in molteplici discipline: architetto, designer industriale, artista e fondatore di famosissime riviste di settore, ha contribuito ad affermare la fama internazionale dell’Italia quale fulcro di creatività e genio. Fedele al principio che nel presente si rappresenti il passato e si intuisca il futuro Giò Ponti cerca ed esprime in ogni opera la sintesi tra classico e moderno.

Negli anni ‘30 lo spirito delle sue opere è ancora fortemente classicista ma già consensibili tensioni moderniste. La Ponti 940 ne è un esempio, ultima version di un modello gia’ presentato nel 1933: la svasatura delle gambe e gli stondi dello schienale e della seduta richiamano armonie classiche trattenute da linee pulite ed essenziali che non concedono nulla al decoro. Sapiente il dettaglio della scanalatura posteriore della struttura che rende unico l’appoggio a terra delle gambe e il segno del rastremarsi verso l’alto fino al minimo necessario per l’innesto dello schienale nel punto terminale. Eleganza classica ed essenzialità moderna.

Recognized exponent of Italian contemporary industrial design from the 50s until today, Toffoloni designed a prolific repertoire of chairs and seating. All along his career, he developed a way of work where knowledge of materials and of production processes is combined with culture of design and creativity.

“The designer isn’t just a technician, even not just a poet or an artist. Must understand the mood of the market and relate to the manufacturing context by applying his knowledge and his creativity.”(Werther Toffoloni)

Since the beginning of his career, he put his creativity at the service of the chair industry establishing himself as the protagonist for the success of the Friuli industrial district (Chair Triangle) and master in industrializing bending wood.

“The design of a chair is the most challenging and exciting trial for architects and designers since the modern movement. The designer has to deal with the lightness of the structure and the strength required to a furniture exposed to a constant use; two limits that transform the synthesis form/function/creativity into a problem solvable only through a proper industrial planning and close cooperation between designer and manufacturer.”(Werther Toffoloni)

Bauhaus and organic functionalism, that have remarkably affected his education, find expression in the Otto chair, a tribute to the great master of the Wien Secession. Listed for the Compasso d’Oro award in 1981, the design is inspired by the Otto Wagner armchair designed for the Wien Postsparkasse building and produced by Thonet. Otto is a balanced and essential combination of elements in solid wood and plywood that can be completely disassembled.

Nome storico italiano del design contemporaneo, dagli anni ’50 fino ad oggi, Toffoloni ha sviluppato un prolifico repertorio di progetti specialmente di sedute. Il suo lavoro è una testimonianza esemplare di eccellenza in cui la conoscenza dei materiali e dei processi di produzione si unisce alla cultura del progetto e alla creatività.

“Il designer non deve essere solo un tecnico, ma neanche solo un poeta o un artista. Deve capire gli umori del mercato e rapportarsi al contesto produttivo applicando le sue conoscenze e la sua creatività.” (Werther Toffoloni)

Fin dall’inizio della sua carriera ha messo la propria creatività al servizio dell’industria della sedia affermandosi come protagonista del successo del distretto industriale friulano e maestro dell’industrializzazione della curvatura del legno.

“La sedia costituisce il banco di prova più impegnativo e avvincente per architetti e designer del movimento moderno: chi la progetta deve fare i conti con la leggerezza della struttura e la robustezza necessaria a un mobile sottoposto a usura costante, due limiti che trasformano la sintesi forma/funzione/creatività in un problema risolvibile solo attraverso la corretta progettazione industriale e la stretta collaborazione tra designer e produttore.” (Werther Toffoloni)

Bauhaus e funzionalismo organico che hanno tanto influito sulla sua formazione trovano una eccellente esempio nella poltroncina Otto, un omaggio al grande maestro della Secessione viennese. Segnalata al Compasso d’Oro 1981 si ispira alla seduta disegnata da Otto Wagner per la Wien Postsparkasse e prodotta da Thonet. Paso Doble was recognized as the best product launched at the Milan Salone del Mobile in 2001. Included in the selection I.DoT-italian, Design on Tour, a traveling museum of the best Italian design, was in show at the Chelsea Art Meuseum in New York during ICFF and in Chicago during NeoCon. Enrico Davide Bona, architect and designer with office in Milan, Genoa, and Paris, combined lecturing at the university, architect and designer career and editorial experience as chief editor of the magazine Casabella. Forty years professional experience dedicated to the design spanning through very different scales of projects from architecture of schools, hospitals, libraries and homes to industrial products of furniture and lighting.

Paso Doble’s singular and outstanding silhouette evokes fleeting steps of dance, movement, rhythm, weightless, spring. A figurative object that captivates the imagination resembling zoomorphic figures and fantastic tales. A distinctive and unique mark for a practical and easy foldable chair. La Paso Doble è stata segnalata come il miglior prodotto presentato al Salone del Mobile di Milano 2001. Inclusa nella selezione I.Dot-italian, Design on Tour, museo itinerante del miglior design italiano, è stato presentato a New York al Chelsea Art Museum durante ICFF e a Chicago in concomitanza con NeoCon. Enrico Davide Bona, architetto e designer con studio a Milano, Genova, and Parigi, ha integrato insegnamento universitario, professione di architetto e designer, esperienza editoriale come capo redattore della rivista Casabella. Una carriera di quarant’anni dedicata alla progettazione affrontando diverse scale e ambiti disciplinari dall’architettura di scuole, ospedali, biblioteche e abitazioni ai prodotti di design industriale, mobili e illuminazione.
