Welcome to a summer edition of Ice Times. The next edition will be shortly before registration, which will be September 16th at the junior fair building.

Though hockey may be the farthest thing from your mind right now, your MYHA board has been busy “thinking hockey” all spring and summer long by reviewing last season and making plans for the next season. You will see a number of changes. There are major changes to our fundraising programs this upcoming year. You will be presented a smorgasbord of options (including a new Fantasy Hockey program) for fundraising. If you liked doing the Skate-a-thon, you will be able to participate. Also, all levels may participate in the Blades Card sales.

If you care not to fundraise at all, you will be given a buyout option.

Though required work hour numbers will not change, how you earn your work hours will change. Effective this year, only 1/3 of required work hours may be earned during your child’s games through scorekeeping, penalty box, announcing, etc. Another 1/3 of required hours must be earned in rink cleaning and/or preparing the rink for the upcoming season while the final 1/3 of required hours can be from working at the breakfast, dog show, concessions, tournaments, etc. Team assigned, certified coaches will be exempt from these requirements.

An exciting new voluntary program will allow those of you who choose to participate, an option to control your hockey costs. Many of you are familiar with the SCRIP program used by churches and school groups to earn funds. SCRIP programs are only available to not-for-profit agencies (thank our founding fathers for having the wisdom to establish MYHA as a not-for-profit!). With SCRIP, your normal everyday purchases earn money. The MYHA board has determined that 60% of the earnings of these

purchases may be applied toward things like registration (fall of 2003), hockey camps and hockey equipment. See the full information that follows in Ice Times and please do fill out the registration form for this program.

At last board meeting the possibility of scheduling early morning practices before school was discussed (but not yet approved). The teams that would be affected by this would be the U15, U19, Bantam, High School Blades and Tiger teams. The board feels that we must use our ice in the best possible way, which includes AM practices (as many other associations have done). This will allow all teams an opportunity for full ice practice, which will help in team development. If approved, these teams would rotate through some type of schedule that would allow time to shower at school or at home prior to the start of the school day. Lori Remeika, our Coaches Committee board liaison, will be convening a meeting of all the coaches to further discuss this possibility. The coach’s recommendation will be brought back to the August board meeting for further board consideration. Please feel free to share your opinion on this subject with any board member.

Through last year, MYHA continued to grow in spite of the decline of nearly 400 Kindergarten through 12th grade students (in the last five years) in Marshfield public and private schools. The feasibility group formed to study the possibility of a second sheet of ice has begun to meet. If you have an interest in joining this group, please submit your name to any board member or me.

Have a safe and enjoyable summer.

Summer Ice in Marshfield?

The MYHA board is exploring the possibility and interest level to offer summer hockey camps at our rink in 2003. Preliminary contact with

the Fair Association has been favorable toward the concept. Positive interest in running a camp has been received from Turcotte Stick handling www.turcottehockey.com and from Planet Hockey www.planethockey.com in running a camp(s) at our facility, but we need your input. Please fill out the “Summer Hockey Camp Survey” survey located in this edition of Ice Times. Please return the survey via mail to MYHA, PO Box 943, Marshfield, WI 54449. Additionally, MYHA members receiving Ice Times via Yahoo Groups or via e-mail may electronically fill out the document and return the survey to [email protected]. Please respond to this survey by August 18th, so we can begin to discuss the interest level at our August board meeting.

Fantasy Hockey Fundraising Program

The fantasy hockey fundraising program is the newest way for MYHA to earn money. Participating in this program will help keep our registration fees among the lowest in the area.

The program is based on the fantasy sports craze. Participants purchase roster cards for $10 that contains names of players from the NHL. The cards are sealed shut to conceal the roster until after purchase and all cards are different. Each card has four goalies, six forwards and four defensemen, all top players in the NHL from the previous year. The program runs the entire six months of the season (October through March/April).

Fifty- four cash prizes will be awarded over the course of the program. There are monthly winners for the roster card(s) that accumulate the highest totals in eight different statistical categories, and overall standing winners awarded for the entire rosters overall performance. There is no need to track your roster card, as prizes will be awarded every month to the winners.

It won’t be necessary to do any arm-twisting to get people to purchase these cards. This is a fun program that people like to be a part of.

Get started early. Pick up as many cards as you want at registration in September. Remember, sell them before the season begins, it gives you more chances to win. Let’s make this fundraiser a big success!

What Is SCRIP? SCRIP is a term that means “substitute money”. When you purchase SCRIP, you’re purchasing negotiable gift certificates and prepaid cards that are used just like cash. You can use SCRIP to purchase everyday expenses like food, clothing, and other essentials, and with every purchase, you earn revenue for our organization.

How SCRIP generates revenue for youThe Great Lakes SCRIP Center acts on behalf of many non-profit organizations to purchase large amounts of scrip from grocery stores, department stores, and other retailers. Because the SCRIP is purchased with cash up front, the participating retailers offer a substantial discount. Marshfield Youth Hockey Association (MYHA) buys the SCRIP from Great Lakes SCRIP Center and from individual retailers at a discount, and re-sells the certificates to families like yours for full face value. The discount - from two to fifteen percent or more – is our organization’s revenue. Also, MYHA is choosing to split this revenue with you to help you pay for registration fees (fall 2003), hockey equipment and hockey camps. See the accompanying sheets for more information.

I. SCRIP is "shopping cart fundraising”SCRIP is a popular fundraiser because families don’t have to sell anything. Organization members produce revenue by making regular household purchases they would make anyway. Groceries, clothing, toys, gifts, even gasoline can be purchased with SCRIP.

II. Make SCRIP a part of your routine. You do need to register for SCRIP. By registering now, you can begin MYHA‘s SCRIP program the week of regular MYHA registration. Drop your order in the SCRIP mailbox at the rink by 5PM Sunday, September 15 th and pick up your SCRIP in your secure mailbox (that will be installed on the second floor at the rink) after 5PM the following Friday, September 20th. You will be issued your key to the mailbox the night of regular MYHA registration (September 16th).

How much may I earn?See the accompanying order sheet to estimate what you could earn. Local businesses, not a part of Great Lakes SCRIP Center are still being contacted regarding their involvement in this program.

Summer 2002

Major Retailers Want To Help MYHA!

Dear MYHA Parent:

We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a new voluntary fundraising program for our organization. It’s called “SCRIP”, and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop.

SCRIP is simply a word that means, “substitute money” – in other words; SCRIP is gift certificates from national and local retailers. They’re the same gift certificates that you buy at the store. Many popular retailers participate in our SCRIP program including JCPenney, The Gap, Menard’s, Shopko, Pizza Hut, Red Lobster and many, many others.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple -- SCRIP participating retailers agree to sell gift certificates to MYHA at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certificates for full face value and redeem them for full face value. SCRIP is exciting, because everybody wins:

The retailers get the cash up front and repeat business…

You get a powerful fundraising alternative that involves no selling…

MYHA gets a regular source of revenue.

The beauty of SCRIP is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for MYHA without spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regular shopping dollars with SCRIP at the stores that participate in the SCRIP program! SCRIP can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, dining and entertainment, and even gasoline!

The MYHA board has determined that SCRIP earnings will be split with the member earning 60% and MYHA 40%. Member’s earnings will be placed in an account to be used by the member to pay for registration fees (beginning fall 2003), hockey developmental camps, or the purchase of hockey equipment. Future options may be added. Additionally the member may choose to donate their earnings to the building fund or to the MYHA scholarship fund, just mark the order form appropriately.

Page 9: IceTimes - files.leagueathletics.comfiles.leagueathletics.com/Text/Documents/1275/401.doc  · Web viewThrough last year, MYHA continued to grow in spite of the decline of nearly

Here’s how the program will work.

● Fill out an application to become registered to purchase MYHA SCRIP

● When registered, you will receive a key to a mailbox that you will share with another scrip family of MYHA. The mailboxes will be mounted on the second floor at the rink. Keys will be distributed at regular MYHA registration, September 16th.

● Fill out a SCRIP order form with an accompanying check payable to MYHA SCRIP and drop it in the SCRIP order box in the lobby by 5PM on Sundays.

● Filled SCRIP orders will be available for pickup in your mailbox the following Friday by 5PM.

● You may enlist the help of family and friends to purchase SCRIP on your behalf. Only your check may be used to purchase the actual SCRIP certificates. Have family and friends pay you!

When the time comes that you decide you wish to redeem your SCRIP credits, follow these simple procedures.

● SCRIP credits may only be redeemed by MYHA members in good standing and must be for a minimum of $50.00. Proof of purchase (for equipment) or proof of registration (for developmental camps) must accompany the SCRIP credit request form.

● Drop the SCRIP credit request form and proof of purchase in the SCRIP order box by 5PM Sundays.

● Your SCRIP credit check will be available for pickup in your mailbox the following Friday by 5PM.

We think that you’ll find SCRIP to be one of the easiest methods for you to assist MYHA (and for MYHA to assist you with the expense of hockey!)

Be sure to support (and thank) those retailers who help MYHA with SCRIP!
