EVENT REPORT 2017 ICEF celebrates 10 years of the Australia New Zealand Agent (ANZA) Workshop Join us next year • SKYCITY Auckland Convention Centre • New Zealand www.icef.com The Australia New Zealand Agent (ANZA) Workshop celebrated a 10-year milestone. Over the years, ANZA has become the largest agent networking event in Oceania, bringing together international student recruitment professionals from all over the world. On April 5 - 7, 2017, ANZA welcomed 482 participants to the Cairns Convention Centre in Australia, a 15% growth over the previous year, making it the largest ANZA Workshop ever to take place. Organisations from 49 countries came together to network, conducting 4 274 face-to-face business meetings throughout the course of the two-day workshop. 29% of participants were attending their first-ever ICEF event. During the 2017 ANZA Workshop, Study Cairns also celebrated an important milestone – its 20-year anniversary. Study Cairns represents organisations, institutions and businesses dedicated to providing support to students in the region. Australia’s international student enrolment hit a new high in 2016, growing by 10.9%. This is a new record for foreign enrolment in Australia compared to the average annual growth of 6.5% over the past ten years. Besides an impressive growth, a recent study conducted by the Government of Australia reports that nine out of ten students say they are “satisfied” or “very satisfied” with their experience of living and studying in the country. In addition, Education New Zealand reported that in the past few years international student numbers have grown by double-digits, a 13% increase in both 2014 and 2015. Reports show that spending by international students in New Zealand has increased over 50% in the last two years. Overall, such rapid growth in both Australia and New Zealand make Oceania an important region for international student recruitment agents, local educators, and service providers. During the workshop, 124 educators from Australia and New Zealand participated in the event, a 16% increase from last year. “This was a fantastic event. I came out with really good information and feedback per country. I like that the agents have been screened to ensure quality partnerships,” said Justine Barker, Client Relations and International Projects, University of Sydney, Centre for English Teaching, Australia. In 2017, 178 agents from 42 countries including China, Colombia, India, Vietnam, and Brazil attended the event, of which 25% were fi rst-timers. “Fantastic and well organised event. I have made so many new quality contacts. This has been a much better organised networking event than any other event I have attended. There were no awkward ice-breaking games or standing around trying to introduce yourself to strangers, the meetings were fantastic!” said Daniel Wilkinson, Business Development Manager, New Oriental Global Study Tour Promotion & Management Center, China.

The 2017 ANZA Workshop also hosted 109 service providers, a 22% increase from last year, and 38 work & travel representatives, with 76% being fi rst-timers.
The workshop started with 12 seminars featuring topics on new ways to reach students, recruitment in Australia, changes in English language profi ciency testing for work visas, agent training and much more. The workshop also included evening receptions featuring various local entertainers and performers. A wide range of familiarisation tours and activities were organised, allowing agents to learn more about participating campuses and organisations.
