    Sunday Lectionary

    Year B

  • 2

Scripture readings are taken from the Revised Common Lectionary,

    The New King James Version.

The responsorial psalms were constructed from the psalm of the day.

ICCEC feast days were included, and some other feast days

were placed into the addendum. Minor edits to the RCL

were occasionally allowed for formatting purposes, including:

length of readings, sequence, thematic coherence,

and for occasional deference to the Anglican or Roman lectionary,

when these alternative readings were more sensible.

    FIRST SUNDAY IN ADVENT

    The Collect

Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on

the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son

Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he

shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the

dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

    First Reading

    Isaiah 64:1-9

1Oh, that You would rend the heavens! That You would come down! That

the mountains might shake at Your presence- 2As fire burns brushwood, As

fire causes water to boil- To make Your name known to Your adversaries,

That the nations may tremble at Your presence! 3When You did awesome

things for which we did not look, You came down, The mountains shook at

Your presence. 4For since the beginning of the world men have not heard

nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who

acts for the one who waits for Him. 5You meet him who rejoices and does

righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for

we have sinned- In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved. 6But

    we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousness is like filthy rags;

We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away. 7And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take

hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us, And have consumed us

because of our iniquities. 8But now, O LORD, You are our Father; We are the

clay, and You our potter; And all we are the work of Your hand. 9Do not be

furious, O LORD, Nor remember iniquity forever; Indeed, please look-we all

    are Your people!

    Psalm 80

Response: Cause Your face to shine on us,

    And we shall be saved!

1Give ear, O Shepherd of Israel,

    You who lead Joseph like a flock;

You who dwell between the cherubim, shine forth! 2Before Ephraim, Benjamin, and Manasseh,

    Stir up Your strength,

    And come and save us!

Response: Cause Your face to shine on us,

    And we shall be saved!

    4O LORD God of hosts,

How long will You be angry

Against the prayer of Your people? 6You have made us a strife to our neighbors,

And our enemies laugh among themselves.

Response: Cause Your face to shine on us,

    And we shall be saved!

    8You have brought a vine out of Egypt;

You have cast out the nations, and planted it. 9You prepared room for it,

And caused it to take deep root,

    And it filled the land.

Response: Cause Your face to shine on us,

    And we shall be saved!

    1 Corinthians 1:1-9

1Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will of God, and

Sosthenes our brother, 2To the church of God which is at Corinth, to those

who are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all who in every

place call on the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours: 3Grace

to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 4I thank

my God always concerning you for the grace of God which was given to you

by Christ Jesus, 5that you were enriched in everything by Him in all

utterance and all knowledge, 6even as the testimony of Christ was

confirmed in you, 7so that you come short in no gift, eagerly waiting for the

revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8who will also confirm you to the end,

that you may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9God is

faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of His Son, Jesus

    Christ our Lord.

    Gospel Reading

    Mark 13:33-37

33Take heed, watch and pray; for you do not know when the time is. 34It is

like a man going to a far country, who left his house and gave authority to

his servants, and to each his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to

watch. 35Watch therefore, for you do not know when the master of the

house is coming-in the evening, at midnight, at the crowing of the rooster,

or in the morning- 36lest, coming suddenly, he find you sleeping. 37And what

I say to you, I say to all: Watch!"

    SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT

    The Collect

Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance

and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings

and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ

our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God,

    now and forever. Amen

    First Reading

    Isaiah 40:1-11

1"Comfort, yes, comfort My people!" Says your God. 2" Speak comfort to

Jerusalem, and cry out to her, That her warfare is ended, That her iniquity is

pardoned; For she has received from the LORD's hand Double for all her

sins." 3The voice of one crying in the wilderness: " Prepare the way of the

LORD; Make straight in the desert A highway for our God. 4Every valley

shall be exalted And every mountain and hill brought low; The crooked

places shall be made straight And the rough places smooth; 5The glory of

the LORD shall be revealed, And all flesh shall see it together; For the

mouth of the LORD has spoken." 6The voice said, "Cry out!" And he said,

"What shall I cry?" " All flesh is grass, And all its loveliness is like the flower

of the field. 7The grass withers, the flower fades, Because the breath of the

LORD blows upon it; Surely the people are grass. 8The grass withers, the

flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever." 9O Zion, You who

bring good tidings, Get up into the high mountain; O Jerusalem, You who

    bring good tidings, Lift up your voice with strength, Lift it up, be not afraid;

Say to the cities of Judah, "Behold your God!" 10Behold, the Lord GOD shall

come with a strong hand, And His arm shall rule for Him; Behold, His

reward is with Him, And His work before Him. 11He will feed His flock like a

shepherd; He will gather the lambs with His arm, And carry them in His

bosom, And gently lead those who are with young.

    Psalm 85

Response: When Your kingdom comes down from heaven,

Your glory will dwell in the land.

    1LORD, You have been favorable to Your land;

    You have brought back the captivity of Jacob. 2You have forgiven the iniquity of Your people;

You have covered all their sin.

Response: When Your kingdom comes down from heaven,

Your glory will dwell in the land.

6Will You not revive us again,

That Your people may rejoice in You? 7Show us Your mercy, LORD,

    And grant us Your salvation.

Response: When Your kingdom comes down from heaven,

Your glory will dwell in the land.

8I will hear what God the LORD will speak,

    For He will speak peace to His people and to His saints;

But let them not turn back to folly. 9Surely His salvation is near to those who fear Him,

That glory may dwell in our land.

Response: When Your kingdom comes down from heaven,

Your glory will dwell in the land.

    Second Reading

    2 Peter 3:8-15

8But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as

a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. 9The Lord is not slack

concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering

toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to

repentance. 10But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night, in

which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will

melt with fervent heat; both the earth and the works that are in it will be

burned up. 11Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what

manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, 12looking

for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the

heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with

fervent heat? 13Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new

heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells. 14Therefore,

beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in

peace, without spot and blameless; 15and consider that the longsuffering of

our Lord is salvation-as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the

wisdom given to him, has written to you.

    Gospel Reading

    Mark 1:1-8

1The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2As it is

written in the Prophets: " Behold, I send My messenger before Your face,

Who will prepare Your way before You." 3" The voice of one crying in the

wilderness: ' Prepare the way of the LORD; Make His paths straight.'" 4John

came baptizing in the wilderness and preaching a baptism of repentance for

the remission of sins. 5Then all the land of Judea, and those from Jerusalem,

went out to him and were all baptized by him in the Jordan River,

confessing their sins. 6Now John was clothed with camel's hair and with a

leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7And he

preached, saying, "There comes One after me who is mightier than I, whose

sandal strap I am not worthy to stoop down and loose. 8I indeed baptized

you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

    THIRD SUNDAY IN ADVENT

    The Collect

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and,

because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and

mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom,

with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen

    First Reading

    Isaiah 61:1-4,10-11

1"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me

To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the

brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the

prison to those who are bound; 2To proclaim the acceptable year of the

LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, 3To

console those who mourn in Zion, To give them beauty for ashes, The oil of

joy for mourning, The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; That

they may be called trees of righteousness, The planting of the LORD, that

He may be glorified." 4And they shall rebuild the old ruins, They shall raise

up the former desolations, And they shall repair the ruined cities, The

    desolations of many generations.

10I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, My soul shall be joyful in my God; For

He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with

the robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,

And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11For as the earth brings forth

its bud, As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth,

So the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before

    all the nations.

    Psalm 126

Response: The LORD has done great things for us,

And we are glad with expectation.

1When the LORD brought back the captivity of Zion,

We were like those who dream. 2Then our mouth was filled with laughter,

    And our tongue with singing.

Response: The LORD has done great things for us,

And we are glad with expectation.

4Bring back our captivity, O LORD,

As the streams in the South. 5Those who sow in tears

    Shall reap in joy.

Response: The LORD has done great things for us,

And we are glad with expectation.

6He who continually goes forth weeping,

    Bearing seed for sowing,

Shall doubtless come again with rejoicing,

    Bringing his sheaves with him.

Response: The LORD has done great things for us,

And we are glad with expectation.

    1 Thessalonians 5:16-24

16Rejoice always, 17pray without ceasing, 18in everything give thanks; for

this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. 19Do not quench the Spirit. 20Do not despise prophecies. 21Test all things; hold fast what is good. 22Abstain from every form of evil. 23Now may the God of peace Himself

sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be

    John 1:6-8,19-28

6There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7This man came

for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might

believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light.

19Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites

from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20He confessed, and did not

deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." 21And they asked him, "What

then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he

answered, "No." 22Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give

an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 23He

said: "I am ' The voice of one crying in the wilderness: " Make straight the

way of the LORD,"' as the prophet Isaiah said." 24Now those who were sent

were from the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you

baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 26John

answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among

you whom you do not know. 27It is He who, coming after me, is preferred

before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose." 28These things

were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.

    FOURTH SUNDAY IN ADVENT

    The Collect

Purify our conscience, Almighty God, by your daily visitation, that your Son

    Jesus Christ, at his coming, may find in us a mansion prepared for himself;

who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now

    First Reading

    2 Samuel 7:1-11,16

1Now it came to pass when the king was dwelling in his house, and the

LORD had given him rest from all his enemies all around, 2that the king said

to Nathan the prophet, "See now, I dwell in a house of cedar, but the ark of

God dwells inside tent curtains." 3Then Nathan said to the king, "Go, do all

that is in your heart, for the LORD is with you." 4But it happened that night

that the word of the LORD came to Nathan, saying, 5"Go and tell My servant

David, 'Thus says the LORD: "Would you build a house for Me to dwell in? 6For I have not dwelt in a house since the time that I brought the children of

Israel up from Egypt, even to this day, but have moved about in a tent and

in a tabernacle. 7Wherever I have moved about with all the children of

Israel, have I ever spoken a word to anyone from the tribes of Israel, whom

I commanded to shepherd My people Israel, saying, 'Why have you not built

Me a house of cedar?'"' 8Now therefore, thus shall you say to My servant

David, 'Thus says the LORD of hosts: "I took you from the sheepfold, from

following the sheep, to be ruler over My people, over Israel. 9And I have

been with you wherever you have gone, and have cut off all your enemies

from before you, and have made you a great name, like the name of the

great men who are on the earth. 10Moreover I will appoint a place for My

people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their

own and move no more; nor shall the sons of wickedness oppress them

anymore, as previously, 11since the time that I commanded judges to be

over My people Israel, and have caused you to rest from all your enemies.

Also the LORD tells you that He will make you a house. 16And your house

and your kingdom shall be established forever before you. Your throne shall

    Psalm 89

Response: Your throne is established for all generations.

    1I will sing of the mercies of the LORD forever;

    With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations. 2For I have said, "Mercy shall be built up forever;

Response: Your throne is established for all generations.

3"I have made a covenant with My chosen,

I have sworn to My servant David: 4'Your seed I will establish forever,

And build up your throne to all generations.'

Response: Your throne is established for all generations.

19Then You spoke in a vision to Your holy one,

    And said: "I have given help to one who is mighty;

    I have exalted one chosen from the people. 20I have found My servant David;

With My holy oil I have anointed him.

Response: Your throne is established for all generations.

25Also I will set his hand over the sea,

And his right hand over the rivers. 26He shall cry to Me, 'You are my Father,

    Luke 1:26-38

26Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of

Galilee named Nazareth, 27to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was

Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28And having

come in, the angel said to her, "Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with

you; blessed are you among women!" 29But when she saw him, she was

troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found

favor with God. 31And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring

forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32He will be great, and will be

called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of

His father David. 33And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of

His kingdom there will be no end." 34Then Mary said to the angel, "How can

this be, since I do not know a man?" 35And the angel answered and said to

her, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will

overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be

called the Son of God. 36Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also

conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who

was called barren. 37For with God nothing will be impossible." 38Then Mary

said, "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your

word." And the angel departed from her.

God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the

person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by

Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance

1And it came to pass in those days that a decree went out from Caesar

Augustus that all the world should be registered. 2This census first took

place while Quirinius was governing Syria. 3So all went to be registered,

everyone to his own city. 4Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city

of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem,

because he was of the house and lineage of David, 5to be registered with

Mary, his betrothed wife, who was with child. 6So it was, that while they

were there, the days were completed for her to be delivered. 7And she

brought forth her firstborn Son, and wrapped Him in swaddling cloths, and

laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. 8Now

there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping

watch over their flock by night. 9And behold, an angel of the Lord stood

before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were

greatly afraid. 10Then the angel said to them, "Do not be afraid, for behold,

I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11For there

is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling

cloths, lying in a manger." 13And suddenly there was with the angel a

the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!"

warrior's sandal from the noisy battle, and garments rolled in blood, will be

used for burning and fuel of fire. 6For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son

is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will

be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of

Peace. 7Of the increase of His government and peace There will be no end,

    John 1:1-14

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word

was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made

through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him

was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the

darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 6 There was a man sent

from God, whose name was John. 7 This man came for a witness, to bear

witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. 8 He was not that

Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9 That was the true Light

which gives light to every man coming into the world.10 He was in the world,

and the world was made through Him, and the world did not know Him. 11

He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12 But as many as

received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to

those who believe in His name: 13 who were born, not of blood, nor of the

will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the Word became

flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only

begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

    Isaiah 61:10 - 62:3

10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD,

    My soul shall be joyful in my God;

For He has clothed me with the garments of salvation,

He has covered me with the robe of righteousness,

As a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments,

And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels. 11 For as the earth brings forth its bud,

As the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth,

So the Lord GOD will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before

    all the nations.

1 For Zion’s sake I will not hold My peace,

And for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest,

Until her righteousness goes forth as brightness,

And her salvation as a lamp that burns. 2 The Gentiles shall see your righteousness,

    And all kings your glory.

You shall be called by a new name,

Which the mouth of the LORD will name. 3 You shall also be a crown of glory

41 Jesus' parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem according

returned, the Boy Jesus lingered behind in Jerusalem. And Joseph and His

mother did not know it; 44 but supposing Him to have been in the company,

they went a day’s journey, and sought Him among their relatives and

acquaintances. 45 So when they did not find Him, they returned to

Jerusalem, seeking Him. 46 Now so it was that after three days they found

Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to

them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were astonished

at His understanding and answers. 48 So when they saw Him, they were

amazed; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You done this to us?

Look, Your father and I have sought You anxiously.” 49 And He said to them,

“Why did you seek Me? Did you not know that I must be about My Father’s

business?” 50 But they did not understand the statement which He spoke to

them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was

    Matthew 2:1-12

1 Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the

king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where

is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the

East and have come to worship Him.” 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with

him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the

people together, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. 5 So they said to him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it is written by the

prophet: 6 ‘ But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,

    Are not the least among the rulers of Judah;

For out of you shall come a Ruler

Who will shepherd My people Israel.’”

7 Then Herod, when he had secretly called the wise men, determined from

them what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and

said, “Go and search carefully for the young Child, and when you have

found Him, bring back word to me, that I may come and worship Him also.”

9 When they heard the king, they departed; and behold, the star which they

had seen in the East went before them, till it came and stood over where

the young Child was. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced with

exceedingly great joy. 11 And when they had come into the house, they saw

the young Child with Mary His mother, and fell down and worshiped Him.

And when they had opened their treasures, they presented gifts to Him:

    gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

12 Then, being divinely warned in a dream that they should not return to

Herod, they departed for their own country another way.

Feast of our Lord the Giver of Life: Third Sunday in January

Oh Great King of Kings, let your kingdom come on earth as it is in heaven

for the sanctity of all human life. You have said that your Kingdom is

unrighteousness let righteousness come to bear; where there is hostility,

And ransomed him from the hand of one stronger than he. 12 Therefore they shall come and sing in the height of Zion,

Streaming to the goodness of the LORD—

For wheat and new wine and oil,

    For the young of the flock and the herd;

Their souls shall be like a well-watered garden,

And they shall sorrow no more at all. 13“ Then shall the virgin rejoice in the dance,

    And the young men and the old, together;

For I will turn their mourning to joy,

    Will comfort them,

And make them rejoice rather than sorrow. 14 I will satiate the soul of the priests with abundance,

And My people shall be satisfied with My goodness, says the LORD.” 15 Thus says the LORD: “ A voice was heard in Ramah,

    Lamentation and bitter weeping,

    Rachel weeping for her children,

    Because they are no more.”

19 If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men the most

pitiable. 20 But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the

firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep. 21 For since by man came death,

by Man also came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all die,

even so in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But each one in his own order:

Christ the firstfruits, afterward those who are Christ’s at His coming. 24 Then

comes the end, when He delivers the kingdom to God the Father, when He

puts an end to all rule and all authority and power. 25 For He must reign till

He has put all enemies under His feet. 26 The last enemy that will be

    destroyed is death.

Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world:

Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine

with the radiance of Christ's glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and

    1 Samuel 3:1-10, 19

1Now the boy Samuel ministered to the LORD before Eli. And the word of

the LORD was rare in those days; there was no widespread revelation. 2And

it came to pass at that time, while Eli was lying down in his place, and when

his eyes had begun to grow so dim that he could not see, 3and before the

lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the LORD where the ark of God

was, and while Samuel was lying down, 4that the LORD called Samuel. And

he answered, "Here I am!" 5So he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am, for you

called me." And he said, "I did not call; lie down again." And he went and

lay down. 6Then the LORD called yet again, "Samuel!" So Samuel arose and

went to Eli, and said, "Here I am, for you called me." He answered, "I did

not call, my son; lie down again." 7(Now Samuel did not yet know the

LORD, nor was the word of the LORD yet revealed to him.) 8And the LORD

called Samuel again the third time. So he arose and went to Eli, and said,

"Here I am, for you did call me." Then Eli perceived that the LORD had

called the boy. 9Therefore Eli said to Samuel, "Go, lie down; and it shall be,

if He calls you, that you must say, 'Speak, LORD, for Your servant hears.'"

So Samuel went and lay down in his place. 10Now the LORD came and stood

and called as at other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" And Samuel answered,

"Speak, for Your servant hears." .

19So Samuel grew, and the LORD was with him and let none of his words

fall to the ground. 20And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew that Samuel

had been established as a prophet of the LORD.

Now the body is not for sexual immorality but for the Lord, and the Lord for

power. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ? Shall I

then take the members of Christ and make them members of a harlot?

Certainly not! 16Or do you not know that he who is joined to a harlot is one

body with her? For "the two," He says, "shall become one flesh." 17But he

who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him. 18Flee sexual immorality.

Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual

immorality sins against his own body. 19Or do you not know that your body

is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God,

1Now concerning things offered to idols: We know that we all have

he knows anything, he knows nothing yet as he ought to know. 3But if

anyone loves God, this one is known by Him.

10For if anyone sees you who have knowledge eating in an idol's temple, will

not the conscience of him who is weak be emboldened to eat those things

offered to idols? 11And because of your knowledge shall the weak brother

perish, for whom Christ died? 12But when you thus sin against the brethren,

declare My praise. 22" But you have not called upon Me, O Jacob; And you

have been weary of Me, O Israel. 23You have not brought Me the sheep for

your burnt offerings, Nor have you honored Me with your sacrifices. I have

not caused you to serve with grain offerings, Nor wearied you with incense. 24You have bought Me no sweet cane with money, Nor have you satisfied Me

with the fat of your sacrifices; But you have burdened Me with your sins,

You have wearied Me with your iniquities. 25" I, even I, am He who blots out

your transgressions for My own sake; And I will not remember your sins.

    Psalm 41

Response: The LORD, our God, will surely save us.

    1Blessed is he who considers the poor;

The LORD will deliver him in time of trouble. 2The LORD will preserve him and keep him alive,

    And he will be blessed on the earth;

You will not deliver him to the will of his enemies.

Response: The LORD, our God, will surely save us.

    3The LORD will strengthen him on his bed of illness;

    You will sustain him on his sickbed. 4I said, "LORD, be merciful to me;

Heal my soul, for I have sinned against You."

Response: The LORD, our God, will surely save us.

11 By this I know that You are well pleased with me,

Because my enemy does not triumph over me. 12 As for me, You uphold me in my integrity,

And set me before Your face forever.

Response: The LORD, our God, will surely save us.

    2 Corinthians 1:18-22

18But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No. 19For the Son

of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us-by me, Silvanus,

and Timothy-was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. 20For all the promises

of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us. 21Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, 22who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a

    guarantee.

    Mark 2:1-12

1And again He entered Capernaum after some days, and it was heard that

He was in the house. 2Immediately many gathered together, so that there

was no longer room to receive them, not even near the door. And He

preached the word to them. 3Then they came to Him, bringing a paralytic

who was carried by four men. 4And when they could not come near Him

because of the crowd, they uncovered the roof where He was. So when they

had broken through, they let down the bed on which the paralytic was lying. 5When Jesus saw their faith, He said to the paralytic, "Son, your sins are

forgiven you." 6And some of the scribes were sitting there and reasoning in

their hearts, 7"Why does this Man speak blasphemies like this? Who can

forgive sins but God alone?" 8But immediately, when Jesus perceived in His

spirit that they reasoned thus within themselves, He said to them, "Why do

you reason about these things in your hearts? 9Which is easier, to say to the

paralytic, 'Your sins are forgiven you,' or to say, 'Arise, take up your bed

and walk'? 10But that you may know that the Son of Man has power on

earth to forgive sins"-He said to the paralytic, 11"I say to you, arise, take up

your bed, and go to your house." 12Immediately he arose, took up the bed,

and went out in the presence of them all, so that all were amazed and

glorified God, saying, "We never saw anything like this!"

    EIGHTH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY

    The Collect

Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to

fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for

us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of

this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal,

    and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, on God, now

    and forever. Amen

    First Reading

    Hosea 2:19-23

19“ I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me

In righteousness and justice, In loving-kindness and mercy; 20 I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness,

And you shall know the LORD. 21“ It shall come to pass in that day

    That I will answer,” says the LORD;

“ I will answer the heavens,

And they shall answer the earth. 22 The earth shall answer

    With grain,

    With new wine,

    And with oil;

They shall answer Jezreel. 23 Then I will sow her for Myself in the earth,

    And I will have mercy on her who had not obtained mercy;

Then I will say to those who were not My people,

    ‘ You are My people!’

And they shall say, ‘You are my God!’”

    Psalm 103

Response: The LORD our God is merciful and gracious.

8 The LORD is merciful and gracious,

Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy. 9 He will not always strive with us,

Nor will He keep His anger forever.

Response: The LORD our God is merciful and gracious.

10 He has not dealt with us according to our sins,

Nor punished us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heavens are high above the earth,

So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him

Response: The LORD our God is merciful and gracious.

12 As far as the east is from the west,

So far has He removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father pities his children,

So the LORD pities those who fear Him.

Response: The LORD our God is merciful and gracious.

    2 Corinthians 3:17-4:2

17 Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is

liberty. 18 But we all, with unveiled face, beholding as in a mirror the glory

of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory,

just as by the Spirit of the Lord.

1 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do

not lose heart. 2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not

walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by

manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience

    in the sight of God.
