ICAR-IIFSR organizes Swacch Bharat Abhiyan campaign in Big Lapathy village in Carnicobar (Nicobar district) of Andaman and Nicobar Islands

As a part of monitoring and feedback meet on Tribal Sub Plan (TSP) activities undertaken in Carnicobar Island of Nicobar district in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, farmers meet at Biglapathy village in Carnicobar Island was organized on 19 February 2017 in which Mr Sudhakar Gupta, Assistant Commissioner (HQ), Nicobar district was Chief Guest. On the occasion, Swacch Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) campaign was also launched in the village under TSP programme of AICRP on Integrated Farming Systems. Dr AS Panwar, Director, ICAR-IIFSR, Modipuram gave brief account on importance of clean environment and its associated advantages in health. Dr N. Ravisankar, PI (OFR) and Nodal officer (TSP) informed that feedback meetings of TSP activities are organized for refining the programme during the next Mid-term outlay period (2017-2020). Twenty five number of cleaning kits having brooms and dust bins were distributed to the villagers by Mr Sudhakar Gupta, Assistant Commissioner (HQ), Carnicobar. Chief guest in his remarks appreciated the efforts of ICAR-IIFSR for working in remote areas and helping the really under privileged people in terms of getting real time practical demonstration of vegetable cultivation and also improved practices of agriculture. He also mentioned that clean environment with peoples participation would have a long term impact. Cleaning of public areas was also undertaken. Assistant Commissioner (HQ) also assured that he will open a weekly vegetable bazar in the Carnicobar and also provide transport facility for bringing vegetables to market. Further, he also assured that community water harvesting facility will be added in the next plan. Dr AS Panwar, Director, ICAR-IIFSR informed that Biglapthy village is adoped under AICRP-IFS for creation of awareness on Swacch Bharat Abhiyan and activities will be continued by field unit comprising of AICRP on IFS centre staff from ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair and also ICAR-KVK, Nicobar district. He also informed that community compost unit will be proposed in the next MTO for this village in order to demonstrate the composting of coconut wastes and to maintain clean surroundings in habitations. Big Lapathy village captain also graced the occasion.
