Cultural Heritage

The aim of the Master’s Degree is the advanced training of Architects according to the European Union requirements set by the EU Bologna Process. ICad key-words are: Design - Landscape and Environment - Sustainability - Cultural Heritage. The iCad educational programme emphasizes the role of the Architectural Design Lab in all semesters. The programme is implemented with a choice of elective courses and seminars, design workshops and professional internships.

The School of Architecture of the University of Florence welcomes students from both inside and outside the European Union to its International Master Programme (iCad, International Course on Architectural Design). All courses are held in English.

iCad is based on the following main assumptions:• strong relationship of

contemporary architecture, its techniques and methods, to the cultural values of the built environment

• sustainability as a general equilibrium between human needs, spaces, products, and nature

• team-work involving students from different training and cultural backgrounds adds an extra quality to the programme

Why in Florence Cross-cultural dialogue is a crucial feature of iCad courses, allowing students to compare and integrate their different backgrounds in a unique context. At the very heart of Italy, for centuries Florence has been one of Europe's leading cultural centres. Today, its architectural and artistic heritage makes it one of the most visited cities in the world, its large and preserved city centre, and its historic villas and gardens in the outskirts are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list).

The city can offer incredibly stimulating opportunities, as Florence is home to some of the world's most splendid museums and libraries, renowned international institutions, and more than 40 branches of foreign universities.
