Weather the weather…Can’t really believe this is the November issue, sitting in warm sunshine just a couple of miles outside Inverness. Weird. Doubtless by the time the postie shoves his frozen mitt through your letterbox with yours truly, normality will have returned and you’ll shout mam to put a log on the fi re and light an extra candle to read this by. #winterlove Anyway, never mind the cold – there’s heaps to do, not least the Inverness Film Festival. We could never accuse H-I-C-A of pandering to any kind of lowest common denominator, the gallery continuing to resolutely showcase art that demands some kind of thinking about. Their latest exhibition by ALAN JOHNSTON which runs from 08 NOV–13 DEC is no exception, the work of one of the country’s leading geometric abstract artists involving “a necessary reciprocity between the instinctual negotiations of momentary circumstance, through the production of small-scale and irregular pencil lines, and the formation, from these, of large-scale, planned and measured constructions.” Got that? Intriguing at the very least.

If you want your art a little more conventional, head along to IMAG from 21 NOV–02 JAN where they’re displaying four portraits by the country’s fi nest eighteenth century artists, three by JOSHUA REYNOLDS and one by THOMAS GAINSBOROUGH. The pictures come from a private Highland collection so this is a once in a lifetime chance to see them up close.

A word too for the always excellent STRATHPEFFER PAVILION ART FAIR, on from 26–29 NOV, which as well as being a major fundraiser for the Pavilion is also a spectacularly colourful event showcasing for sale over 300 original works by around 100 Highland artists. Entry is free.

FILMFilm Festival Fun.

DOCUMENTARYCOMEDY DRAMA FAMILY ROMANCE

12

Wow, where on earth to start with this year’s INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL?!Perhaps with the other fi lms released this month – such as HUNGER GAMES: MOCKINGJAY PT2 with J-Law or Danny Boyle’s Sorkin-penned STEVE JOBS or Spielberg’s BRIDGE OF SPIES with Tom Hanks. There’s also Maggie Smith on Alan Bennet’s drive in THE LADY IN THE VAN, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara in CAROL, Bradley Cooper in BURNT, Brit-pop meets American Psycho KILL YOUR FRIENDS, and BORUTO – ie the son of Naruto.

But back to the fi lm festival – can’t emphasize enough to you how good this event is - a really strong line-up of fl icks to see, many of them UK or Scottish premieres. Impossible to cover them all here (see invernessfi lmfestival.com) but we’ll try to outline our top tips: Opening fi lm is BROOKLYN [1], a 50s NY vs rural Ireland rom-dram featuring Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson, competing for your love with French rom-com QUANTUM LOVE [2] starring the awesome François Cluzet and Sophie Marceau. Closing the fi rst day is stunning feat – VICTORIA is fi lmed in ONE TAKE (!) from beginning to end, telling the story of a Spanish student starting in a Berlin dance club and ending up involved in a bank robbery. Part love story, part heist, part thriller, totally compelling. Get a ticket while you can. And there’s four more days of this! There’s two more fi lms involving bank robbing – NOW OR NEVER and CLOSER TO THE MOON – the former a French movie about a housewife comandeering a thief, the latter set in 1959 Romania and featuring the brilliant Vera Farmiga and Mark Strong; and another French contribution, the emotive VALLEY OF LOVE with the irresistable re-pairing of Isabelle Huppert and Gerard Depardieu. If you like viewing your screen thrills through your fi ngers then both BONE TOMAHAWK [3] (horror/western with Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, cannibals and much VIOLENCE) and THE WITCH [4] (pre-Salem New England with evil animals and spirits, child disappearances and possessions) are for you. Yikes. Really, yikes! If laughing’s more your thing then we can recommend either the multi award-winning GÜEROS – a Mexican road/coming-of-age movie with a difference, or GRANDMA [5] in featuring a not-to-be-missed tour-de-force performance from Lily Tomlin. Gentler fun can be had from SLEEPING WITH OTHER PEOPLE (“When Harry Met Sally for A**holes”) with Jason Sudeikis & Alison Brie and LEARNING TO DRIVE [6], a charming ‘clash of cultures’ fi lm with Ben Kingsely’s Sikh driving instructor teaching Patricia Clarkson’s frustrated Manhattan author. Weirdness should be in evidence at any self-respecting fi lm festival – so try out CARNIVAL OF SOULS, a fi lm with no pictures, a blindfold and headphones for all (!) or the Phillipines-based RUINED HEART: ANOTHER LOVE STORY BETWEEN

A CRIMINAL AND A WHORE [7] (“an orgy of sex, violence and crime with a banging soundtrack”) , or Tobey Maguire taking on the role of US chess prodigy-turned-political exile, Bobby Fisher, in PAWN SACRIFICE. The truth is stranger than fi ction. More of which in the stunning documentary STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN & LE MANS. Elsewhere, you shouldn’t miss Karen Gillan’s directorial debut short, COWARD, or Viggo Mortensen in FAR FROM MEN adapted from Camus’ The Guest and with a Nick Cave/Warren Ellis soundtrack. Bringing the whole thing to a close is the Scottish Premiere of Scott Cooper’s BLACK MASS [8] with Johnny Depp’s much-talked-about outing as crime boss Whitey Bulger – see it before yer pals. Wow.

SAT 14 NOV MAGIC SHO @ Eden Court, 4.30pm, ABRACADABRA! Magic Sho waves her magic wand and a small white rabbit suddenly appears. She saws the rabbit in half, she levitates him under a silk handkerchief, she puts him into a velvet bag and smashes him into a million pieces with a hammer before (magically) making him whole again* It’s all going really well - so why does the rabbit look so unhappy? A brand new show for ages 5-8 years featuring a rabbit who never misses a trick and a magician who sometimes forgets to say the magic word.*Please note: no rabbits (not even toy ones)

are harmed in this show .

FRI 20 NOV MINISTRY OF SCIENCE LIVE @ Eden Court, 1pm, 7pm, WARNING! WARNING! 100% Educational. 200% Anarchic. 300% Entertaining. 400% Explosive. This is a public safety announcement. Please keep your head firmly on your

shoulders, and your arms, legs and feet inside the ride at all times - Ministry of Science Live is about to explode onto the stage! Not your ordinary science show - it comes with a bang and a whoosh. But most of all is comes with a hovercraft built on stage. Oh, and a Human Cannon too! This new production takes an anarchic approach to science communication whilst looking at the inventors and engineers who have shaped and inspired the modern world that we live in. From Liquid Nitrogen frozen flowers to Hydrogen Bottle Rockets. From Buzz Aldrin to Virgin Galactic. From a cat food tin to the Hovercraft. From the discovery of Methane to the invention of the Battery. Join the super talented presenters and the voiceover from above (X Factor’s Peter Dickson) as they take you on a journey using brilliantly designed demonstrations with a few loud bangs to lead the way. Fingers in ears advised.

This is the time of year when kids technically begin the run-up to Xmas, a run-up that’s got longer and more temptation strewn with every passing year. So there’s the Halloween shenanigans on Ness Islands at the end of October, closely followed by the Inverness Bonfi re and Fireworks in Bught Park (P27) and then, before you know it the Christmas Lights are on – and everyone’s making their list for Santa. Giddy times.Distractions are therefore all but unnecessary, though it’s nice to see a few opportunities to make a brief diversion from the inevitable hurtle towards the festive season. First up is the slightly odd sounding MAGIC SHO (yep, that’s how it’s spelt) at EDEN COURT on 14 NOV at 4.30pm. It’s a brand new show for 5–8 yr olds featuring “a rabbit who never misses a trick and a magician who sometimes forgets to say the magic word”. A recipe for catastrophe or a neat twist on the art of illusion? We tend to suspect the latter, especially since we’re assured no animals are harmed. More wonder at the MINISTRY OF SCIENCE LIVE event at EDEN COURT on 20 NOV. From the creative team behind Brainiac Live and a whole load of other explosive science shows, this new production takes an anarchic approach to science communication whilst looking at the inventors and engineers who have shaped and inspired the modern world that we live in. Finally, a word for the always excellent SHAKESPEARE SCHOOLS FESTIVAL (EDEN COURT, 19 NOV) and a big thumbs up for the fact that the INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL (see programme details elsewhere in this issue) has lots of stuff for kids to enjoy…

MUSICCLUBBINGCLASSICAL FOLK JAZZ/WORLD ROCK

It’s not that often we get a bona fi de Living Legend playing up here, but that’s certainly the case with NILS LOFGREN [2] who comes to EDEN COURT on 16 NOV. After touring with Bruce Springsteen as a long-time member of the E Street Band, Lofgren is back on the road to perform his own legendary live show. Recently inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the E Street Band, Nils released Face the Music - a retrospective box set of his 45 years of recording - last year, so he obviously has quite a back catalogue to pluck from.

Not quite a living legend, but certainly infl uential for a certain generation, BILLY BRAGG [1] (EC 27 NOV/UNIVERSAL HALL 28 NOV) started off inspired in equal parts by Woody Guthrie and The Clash, his smart way with words making up for the fact that he’s never had the fi nest of voices. Strident, sentimental and rarely short of an opinion, his shows should be entertaining. And we’re fascinated as to how “Brave New England” will go down up here. Support comes from the equally entertaining DUKE SPECIAL, so get there early.

It’s a good month for those dabbling in the rock genre, with IDLEWILD [9] putting in an appearance at IRONWORKS on 25 NOV, the sadly Ian Dury-less BLOCKHEADS (IRONWORKS, 20 NOV), some confi dent new talent in the form of our very own

SCHNARFF SCHNARFF [8] (IRONWORKS, 21 NOV), highly tipped Edinburgh duo MAN OF MOON [4] (MAD HATTERS, 21 NOV), always impressive ADMIRAL FALLOW [7] at HOOTS on 17 NOV and talented singer-songwriter KARIMA FRANCIS at MAD HATTERS on 13 NOV. Plus, to delight those of us of a certain vintage, INVERNESS FILM FESTIVAL is showing the glorious BIG GOLD DREAM on 05 NOV, a documentary about Scotland’s Fast Product label and the peerless post-punk music scene.

There are some high profi le folk acts playing this month too, PEATBOG FAERIES [6] (UNIVERSAL HALL, 01 NOV) and the sublime TREACHEROUS ORCHESTRA [5] (EC, 20 NOV) being standouts, while TONY MCMANUS (EC, 11 NOV) is one of Celtic music’s greatest guitarists and Manran singer NORRIE “TAGO” MACIVER (EC, 15 NOV) is being hailed as “the Gaelic cross-over voice of his generation”. A heads up too for the irresistible gypsy jazz of the TIM KLIPHUIS TRIO @ BOAT OF GARTEN COMMUNITY HALL on 15 NOV.

An early mention of one DJ Julius O’Riordan, aka JUDGE JULES [3] who will be the ‘sound of Saturday night’ at GS NIGHTCLUB on SAT 05 DEC. Getting on

for three decades after starting out, he’s seen it all and done it all, and mixed the soundtrack – so you’re in for a good night, guaranteed…

EDEN COURT FILM 159.indd 4 13/10/2015 17:05

The yearly traditions have begun and thousands of spectators of all ages are expected to gather in BUGHT PARK on 05 NOV to enjoy one of the most popular events of the Inverness Winter Festival. Featuring the biggest bonfi re and fi reworks display staged in the north of Scotland; the spectacular annual INVERNESS BONFIRE AND FIREWORKS DISPLAY [1] is one of the most popular events in the Highland Capital. Sponsored by the Inverness Common Good Fund, this free event on the banks of the River Ness regularly attracts crowds of between 10,000 and 15,000 and has in the past been acclaimed as the best event of its kind in the land, with some justifi cation.Horne’s Funfair will be open 5–10pm and the Guy Competition will be judged before the Bonfi re is lit at 7.30pm after which Fireworx Scotland will provide a musical fi reworks display at 7.50pm. Because of roadworks in the area organisers are appealing for folk to park well away from the site and walk to the venue. And, as always, don’t take sparklers as the discarded wires can injure sports people using the park in future.

It might be parky in Inverness in November, but not nearly as perishing as the conditions encountered by ANDY KIRKPATRICK [2], a man who has been described as “the Ranulph Fiennes of British Climbing” after his expeditions to some of the most inhospitable places on earth, from Greenland to Alaska, Patagonia to Antarctica. He’s also a hugely entertaining comedian and raconteur as anyone who’s seen him live will testify. His new show COLD MOUNTAIN at EDEN COURT on 23 NOV will have you gripped. And delighted. Guaranteed.

SPORTBALLATHLETIC COMBAT EXTREME RACING

Bhoys are Back In TownBhoys are Back In TownHope that Scotland might qualify for Euro 2016 having been jettisoned in typically heartbreaking fashion, attention can turn again to the SPFL with this season shaping up to be one of the most intriguing for years. Several teams have gone on winning runs that rocketed them up the table, only to fall apart when least expected with our own clubs infl icting much of the damage such as ICT’s impressive thumping of Aberdeen. That Caley victory marked the beginning of a turnaround after a sluggish start to the season, meaning that both they and County are now proudly fl ying the Highland fl ag and, impressively challenging for European places. The hooped elephant in the room is of course CELTIC, who, like the rest of the table toppers have been dropping points all over the place. And they’re coming to the area twice this month, fi rstly to Dingwall to play ROSS COUNTY on 08 NOV, then returning for a game against ICT on 29 NOV. Two matches that could decide the destiny of the title? Just maybe.

THEATRELife, Laughs & Laments

DANCECOMEDYCABARET DRAMA MUSICAL

CABARET > COMEDY > DANCE > DRAMA > MUSICALS > MORE >

Another month of fine theatrical fare kicks off with a stage adaptation of IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE [1] at EDEN COURT on 01 NOV. The James Stewart film is nigh on sacred and even the very mention of it induces a lip tremble in the hardiest of folk so it’ll be interesting to see whether this production by Tony Palermo, directed by Guy Retallack, captures the magic as magnificently as Frank Capra did with the original.

Another genius who’s stood the test of time is PG Wodehouse, so the adaptation of a yarn featuring two of his most enduringly appealing characters should be a lot of fun. JEEVES AND WOOSTER IN PERFECT NONSENSE [2] @ EC from 06–08 NOV is a show that’s already been a huge hit down South and should prove just as enjoyable up here. There’s even an elegant savagery somewhere just beneath the chuckles.

Rather more contemporary comedy comes in the form of a trio of laugh merchants bearing down on us this month. First up on 05 NOV at EDEN COURT it’s FRANKIE BOYLE [3] who, since stepping back from TV has become sharper and funnier than ever, particularly in the wake of the referendum. ANDY HAMILTON (EC, 09 NOV) meanwhile is a TV ever-present, with plenty of panel show appearances as well as being one of the writers of the wonderful Outnumbered. His stand-up show promises to help us cope with life’s changes. And stuff. Last up, it’s DANIEL SLOSS [4], again at EDEN COURT, on 28 NOV. At the top of his game right now, with huge online success and even a pilot in the works for Warner Brothers Studios, this self-proclaimed “Half Man Half X Box” rarely disappoints.

Neither it seems does VAMPIRES ROCK [5], the show that first came to Inverness a few years back and proves ever more popular with each ensuing visit. The new show is called THE GHOST TRAIN and promises all those rock anthems set against a spectacular, camply spooky spectacle. It’s at EDEN COURT on 19 NOV.

Rather more poignant will be FAR, FAR FROM YPRES [6] (EC, 25 NOV). Songs about the Great War, both contemporary and traditional combine in this bringing together of theatre and music, telling the tale of an Everyman Tommy and his journey to the Somme and back to Scotland. A triumph at Celtic Connections it should be pretty special.

LIFE ON WHEELS [7] (EC, 26 NOV) is another melding of genres and memories, this time using the physical theatre skills of the Bella Kinetica company to examine two women revisiting the interweaving stories of their past lives and loves - from the post-war optimism of the late 1940s to the domestic realities of the 1950s and beyond.

And it’s panto time. Oh no it’s not. Well, actually it is, with LITTLE THEATRE NAIRN going a bit left field and putting on CALAMITY JANE from 26 NOV- 12 DEC. As original a start as you can imagine to the festive season, of which you’ll be reading much, much more next month.

How did we end up working longer hours? Where did all the sparrows go? If you’re feeling flustered because of flux, Andy will teach you how to cope with the changes we have seen and the changes yet to come.

This one-man play written and first performed at the Edinburgh Fringe by actor and mountaineer John Burns. The Ivy Bar & Kitchen25 Church Street, Inverness 01463 241 459

The site that’s now The Ivy Bar & Kitchen has been numerous dining incarnations over the years, most recently Joy Of Talk/Taste, but a while back it was something called Madison’s Casual Dining. That the food served there was average at best became something of an irrelevance as punters scratched their noggins and wondered what in tarnation “casual dining” was supposed to be, fi nally assuming it was something to do with loosened neckties before staying away in droves.

It turns out that the mysterious Madison empire might just have been way ahead of its time as “casual dining” is most defi nitely a thing these days, or at least the concept of eating out not being subject to the strict rules and expectations of yore. A clue comes in the “Bar & Kitchen” bit of The Ivy’s name, something that’s also been adopted by other places in town like the renamed Kool Runnings (“Caribbean Bar & Kitchen”) and Scotch & Rye (“Bar & Grill”). These aren’t places where you’re forced to go down the three course route, championing instead something more

informal and devil-may-care. Down South they’ve embraced this concept for years, but it’s only now that it’s really taking off here and in the case of The Ivy they’re doing it by branding what they serve as “Scottish Tapas”. Despite the fact that what they’re offering is in no way tapas of any ilk and would possibly have any visiting Spaniard getting the vapours at such an epithet, it’s a neat shorthand for what is basically a selection of smaller-portioned dishes that you can mix and match with gay abandon.

First things fi rst, the space itself. Despite being just a glorifi ed box, it works surprisingly well, its city centre location on Church St and fl oor to ceiling glass frontage meaning it’s one of the best places in town for watching the world go by. The refurb includes stylish, modern furniture, a more relaxed area with couches and plastic ivy in tribute to their name that actually looks pretty smart. It’s a welcoming place and has you thinking that those vile Sixties prefabs by the river on Bridge Street might benefi t from a similar overhaul.

One of the things pulling the punters in during the day is the offer of three tapas for £10, an alluring proposition, but one that isn’t quite the bargain it initially seems. Terms and conditions demand you select a plate from each of three sections on a special menu, one of them basically just chips and another a more conventional starter. It’s far better, if more expensive, to order à la carte – where you’ll see the scope and skills on offer. There’s a fi ne array divided into fi sh & seafood, meat and vegetarian, with burgers available for them that are frightened of the tapas concept.

And it’s there that the wonders of the Highland larder that we keep on banging on about are truly showcased, with scallops, venison, salmon, haggis and more all offered in a variety of interesting ways. With each dish costing somewhere between £5–£8, it’s already far from any authentic tapas concept and perhaps best just to think of it as a selection of starters. Whatever the case, it’s certainly hard to ignore the prospect of the likes of Venison Carpaccio, Haggis Meatballs, Black Pudding with 3939

Caramelised Apples, Cullen Skink Tortilla and Orkney Crab Timbale.

My companion however draws the short straw and in the line of duty orders from the aforementioned set menu, taking Bruschetta, Macaroni Cheese and Chips. I meanwhile plump for Isle Of Mull Souffl é and, from the daily specials board, Slow Braised Shin Of Beef Suet Pudding along with another portion of chips (as required by Scottish law).

Everything arrives at once as is the tapas way of things and the fi rst thing that strikes you is the lovely presentation, a selection of different pans, bowls and boards showing each dish off at its best. That said, my companion’s Bruschetta isn’t the raw tomato’n’garlic combo that you might expect, being rather closer to a French bread pizza and, though competent, hardly likely to set the senses alight. His macaroni cheese is much, much better though, arriving still bubbling from the oven and fulsomely declared to be magnifi cent.

A similar description could be made of my souffl é. Despite its reputation as a minefi eld for culinary reputations, when twice-baked as here, it can be prepared in advance then given a fi nal heating and still come out proudly risen. Which is exactly what happens. A fl uffy interior, light as a cloud and the glorious tang of Mull cheddar transforming it into something unforgettable. Possibly worth the visit for that alone.

Suet pudding is obviously about as far from any traditional notion of tapas as you can imagine, but perhaps there is some sort of common link in that it’s a dish using local ingredients and presented as simply as possible (in this case in an iron skillet) without any distracting bells and whistles. It’s a triumph, the slow-cooked meat unctuous and packed full of fl avour, tasty gravy soaking into the surprisingly light suet crust. And the chips are pretty good too, twice (thrice?) cooked to achieve that perfect texture. Our friendly waiter brings a dessert menu and despite being fuller than you might imagine from ostensibly just “grazing”, we decide to see how the tapas concept can be brought to bear

on puddings. And they’re perhaps the most impressive part of the whole meal, something in itself that sets The Ivy apart from almost every other joint in town.

My pal orders The Ivy’s White Chocolate Mousse and what arrives is an artistic delight as well as a culinary treat. It’s served in a fl owerpot with edible fl owers, hazelnut soil and well-made mousse beneath. Defi nitely a showstopper and something that wouldn’t look out of place on Bake Off, Great British Menu and the like. My choice is equally assured. Though served in a similar skillet to my suet pudding and coincidentally rather resembling that dish at fi rst glance, Espresso Panacotta is a thing of wonder, with just the right degree of wobble and an inspired Tia Maria syrup. The accompanying Toasted Carrot Cake is a step too far however, providing texture but a grittily unpleasant taste. That apart, it’s a fi ne end to a consistently impressive meal.

Tapas though? Not really and, as my companion noted, this selection seemed closer to a pub lunch than to little bowls of olives, patatas bravas, tortilla, wild boar, church-tower-killed goat and sangria that we all enjoy in Spain. And sharing some of the dishes would be diffi cult, though you offered plates should you wish to do so. That said, once you’ve bought into the concept and sidestepped the set menu, you could have yourself a fi ne time here, especially since the waiting and bar staff are all friendly without being intrusive. Casual dining? It might just catch on.

Not to mention numerous pieces for meda-winning gardens for Chelsea Show gardens.

Together with his wife Kim he runs Moore Designs - a venture which specialises in exciting contemporary outdoor furniture. Working exclusively in metal, they provide functional works of art for your garden with the added benefit being that they require no maintenance - you can just sit back and enjoy them. A piece that exemplifies Alex’s unique style is The Nest seat – which truly brings art to life in your garden. The swirls of metal which lovingly cocoon you in your own private escape from the world also frame little captions of your garden for you to enjoy. Best of all - it’s big enough for two, the perfect way to wile away a summer afternoon.

The HSPC Gerald Cooper Cup goes to the fastest highland based finisher of the Loch Ness Marathon, we caught up with winner JOHN NEWSOM.

Congratulations! Were you excited when you heard you’d won the Cup? I was delighted, I had read about it on the Loch Ness Marathon website and in the local press so thought I might be in with a chance of winning it. Next step is to try and retain it!

Were you pleased with your time? My personal best is 2:24 and I would have liked to run close to this at Loch Ness so I was a little disappointed. It is a difficult course and it took its toll on me towards the end where I lost a lot of time.

Why did you take up running? I have been running as long as I can remember! My first race was the Donkey Brae Run 2 mile fun run in Aberdour (Fife) where I grew up, I was probably about 6 years old and did it every year until I was old enough to do the 7 mile version

at 17 years old. I have always enjoyed it, it helped that I was quite good at it!

Is it harder to do the Loch Ness Marathon through a rural area than a city marathon? I have run marathons in Frankfurt and Manchester, these are flat courses designed for fast times. Loch Ness is entirely different! I live locally and do a lot of training out on my own in the countryside so I am quite accustomed to running in similar conditions to the Loch Ness marathon. I ran almost the whole race on my own which is very different from the city marathons.

What’s the hardest part? The last 8 miles! I have moved up from shorter distance races (5000m, 10K and Half Marathons) and have not quite mastered how to last the full 26.2 mile distance without the wheels falling off.

Any advice for someone who’s considering running their first marathon next year? Build up gradually, you’ll be surprised how quickly you improve. Try and stick to a programme and get out running as often as you can, it

helps if there is a group or local club you can run with. I have certainly enjoyed running with the Inverness Harriers this year and working hard together, we have all seen our performances improve.

When’s your next marathon? I intend to come back and try again at Loch Ness next year, I suspect that will be my next marathon although I may get my arm twisted into doing another one in the Spring.

Finally, who are you donating the prize money to? Highland Cycle Ability Centre.

Dawn Bain (pictured inset with John) commented:The Baxter’s Loch Ness Festival of Running is always a fantastic event and not one to be missed! There is such a buzz around the finish line; family members anxiously awaiting the return of loved ones then the delight when they are spotted, the euphoria of the runners, the enthusiasm of the many volunteers and the cheering of the crowds gathered along the route all combine to make a really special day. Of course being blessed with good weather does lift everyone’s spirits!
