SAN Health Report GenerationHow the Process Works

1) Switch Data Collection• SAN Health logs in to the fabric and

collects switch diagnostics and performance data from the telnet interface

2) Report Generation• Analyze the captured data, graph the

performance data and generate a detailed SAN report and topology diagram

• The report generation is a centralized, automated backend process

Report Use Example: Suspicious Port Errors

• Port errors are a normal part of a healthy SAN. However, if any of the following counters: crc, too short, too long, enc_in and bad eof are greater than 5% of the TX and RX count then the port should be investigated.

• Frame errors are an indicator for a marginal component (GBIC/SFP, cable) in the path.

High Host to Disk ratios implies that the disk port may be oversubscribed

–Check the traffic pattern on the disk ports–Use Fabric Watch to monitor the buffer credits alerts on that port–Check the disk vendors recommended fan-out-ratio

High Device to ISL ratios may be indicative of a poor design or a higher potential for congestion
