Non linear Assets Linear Assets

Mobile (fleet, vehicles)

Fixed Physical Assets (facilities)

Component-based Assets (aircraft, ship)

Roads (municipalities, state DOTs)

Railway (track, signals, structures)

Pipeline & Wire (utilities, oil & gas)

A non Linear Asset occupies a defined space and can be tracked by its location or modeled as part of a parent child hierarchy

Linear Assets have linear properties and often connect with each other by their relationship with the linear infrastructure itself

Installed, maintained, replaced as a whole

Preserved and restored in place, and in segments

MAXIMO addressed Non Linear Assets in a Hierarchy but realized it had to formally address Linear Assets

Linear Use Case – Roads

Value Proposition

– DOTs: $92B / year to maintain state

highways

– Municipalities: declining funding, aging

infrastructure

Challenge

– Need to manage as a continuous asset

with dynamic segmentation

– Mile or km markers, lane, direction, offset,

bridges, tunnels, signs…

Operations Process

– DOTs: Problems or conditions are called

into a service center

– Muni: Inspectors assess roads periodically,

identify conditions – cracking, patching

– Crews make repairs or perform

construction projects

Partner: Envista – Pavement Management

Linear Use Case – Railway

Value Proposition

– Railway maintenance is 20-30% of

operating costs of a railroad

– 5-15% annual revenue lost due to

track occupancy for maintenance

Challenge

– Need to manage as a continuous

asset with dynamic segmentation

– Mile or chain markers, track #, offset,

switch, frog/crossing, signals…

Operations Process

– Inspectors walk track weekly, identify

conditions

– Crews make repairs or perform

construction projects

Partners:

– Bentley Systems – Optram

– Mermec – Ramsys

Linear Use Case – Pipeline, Wire

Value Proposition

– Address Service interruptions

immediately

Challenge

– Need to manage as a continuous asset

with dynamic segmentation

– GIS Locations for access points or

towers

Operations Process

– Systems monitor for leaks/breaks and

alert Maximo

– Citizens call in service disruptions

– Crews make repairs or perform

construction projects

– Some preventive maintenance

performed

So what was added to MAXIMO?

1. Linear Asset Management

2. GIS Enablement – Spatial Referencing

Page 10: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Linear assets cannot be defined in Maximo

Solution: Extend the definition of an asset

Page 11: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

IBM Proprietary 11

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Linear asset attributes apply to an entire linear asset –

forcing creation of numerous assets

Solution: Extend the definition of an asset specification

Page 12: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

IBM Proprietary 12

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: While some clients use absolute measures to locate work,

most use features, such as mile posts

Solution: Create a new object called features

Page 13: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

IBM Software Group | Tivoli software

IBM Proprietary 13

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Linear assets are not related hierarchically, and the

relationships vary by industry and client.

Solution: Allow users to create their own relationships

Page 14: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

IBM Proprietary 14

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: While some clients use absolute measures and features to

locate work, some use relationships (intersections)

Solution: Allow relationships to be identified as ‘reference points’

Page 15: IBM - Spacial and Linear Assets

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Customers want to see a snapshot of a linear asset at any

point in its history.

Solution: Add spec, feature, and relationship history

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Customers want to work on a segment of a linear asset.

Solution: Add linear details to work order tracking

New Features of Maximo Linear Asset Manager

Problem: Users need a way to locate/group linear work orders.

Solution: Create a linear filter

So What Was Missing in MAXIMO?

1. Linear Asset Management

2. GIS Enablement – Spatial Referencing

What are we doing with GIS

Spatially enabling Maximo

Embedding ArcGIS Server 9.2 technology stack in Maximo UI

Powerful Java ArcObjects provide capabilities formerly found on only the

desktop

Dynamic – not static

Visualization of data – a map as a report

Geocoding, tracing networks, routing, simple editing

Elimination of data duplication

Take advantage of Maximo security, sites, orgs, etc

IBM Maximo Spatial allows users to visualize all assets

and work in their geospatial context to optimize

resources and decisions
