RPG IV Ability to run concurrently in multiple threads
– Static (Âllthread) for fields– Serialize at the procedure level
Specify Main Procedure to be called– No RPG Cycle is used
Local File support– Defisne files in a procedure after the P Specification
Enhancements related to the use of files– QUalified formats– LIKEFILE Keyword– New Template keyword– Passing files as parameters– EXTDESC to specify file to be used at compile time– Allow Data structure in the result field for EXTFMT
Significantly higher limits for the size of variables– Size of variables to 16MB from 64K– Number of elements in an array 16MB (16 million) from 32 K– Length of string literals to 16mb from 32k
Relaxation of some UCS-2 rules (available starting in V5R3 through PTFs)
Miscellaneous enhancements– Reduce module size– Store parameter info in the program

i5/OS Program Conversion
Ensures unprecedented system integrity
Delivers improved performance
Enables exploitation of future system and processor capabilities
Program conversion will be required to run with next i5/OS release
– Program conversion automatically upgrades software to exploit latest system enhancements
– Not required for POWER6, which can run i5/OS V5R4
Conversion requires program's creation data (observability)
– Note that all programs created for V5R1 or later releases have had their creation data automatically saved during program creation
Tool available now to analyze program conversion for i5/OS V5R3 / V5R4
– Identifies potential issues, if any, and estimates conversion time
Program conversion is performed during install/restore of applications, at first use or at scheduled time

About Conversion
Replace existing program object, without compileo Most attributes retained; modification timestamp updatedo Works for all* created for V5R1 or later,
older programs unless creation data removed
One-time process, but required either direction o V5R4 or V5R3 V6R1o V5R4 or V5R3 V6R1
Integral to V6R1, so no options or added fees
Average per-program convert times, large sampleo Sub-second on fastest processors, < 4 seconds on slowesto Programs with many modules can take a lot longer

Program conversion method choices on V6R1
Choose combination of methods o You initiate by library
– STROBJCVN
o Restore/install– FRCOBJCVN(*YES *ALL) or set QFRCCVNRST >= 2
o First call (etc.)
Consider ANZOBJCVN estimates, Redpaper recommendations
Must regenerate applications that won’t converto Compile from source or acquire

V6R1
Note that it is IBM’s current practice to support an i5/OS release until the next two releases have been made available, plus twelve months. So, for example, it is projected that i5/OS V5R3 will be supported for twelve months after V6R1 is available. Exact dates vary according to a variety of factors, including development schedules and IBM’s broader software lifecycle support cycles. For example, to simplify customers’ software lifecycle management, IBM currently coordinates end of support dates for i5/OS and other IBM software products in April or September. This presentation contains information about IBM’s plans and directions. Such plans are subject to change without notice.
