The new standard, called OpenCAPI provides an open, high-speed pathway for different types of technology – advanced memory, accelerators, networking and storage – to more tightly integrate their functions within servers.

This data-centric approach to server design, which puts the compute power closer to the data, removes inefficiencies in traditional system architectures to help eliminate system bottlenecks and significantly improve server performance.

Two major technology trends will heavily impact the industry

• Hardware acceleration will become commonplace as microprocessor technology and design continues to deliver far less than the historical rate of cost/performance improvement per generation

• New advanced memory technologies will change the economics of computing

• IBM plans to add the new memory and I/O features announced on the Power E850C (8408-44E) to the existing Power E850 server (8408-E8E) in a future firmware Service Pack in 1H 2017. Features planned for support include 16GB, 32GB and 64GB DDR4 CDIMMs, EXP12SX and EXP24SX SAS Expansion Units, 100GbE adapter, 100Gb EDR InfiniBand adapter and PCIe Cryptographic Adapter.

• IBM plans to provide SAS cables longer than 3 meters for the new EXP12SX and EXP24SX SAS Storage Enclosures in 1H 2017. This will allow clients with data center constraints to more conveniently locate the enclosures in their data center similar to the existing EXP24S enclosure cabling options.
